12. Ḥajj and ʿUmrah
‘Urwa bin Al Zubair said I said to A’ishah, wife of the Prophet ﷺ while I was a boy. What do you think about the pronouncement of Allaah, the Exalted “Lo! (The Mountains) Al Safa’ and Al Marwah are among the indications of Allaah. “I think there is no harm for anyone if he does not run between them. A’ishah(may Allah be pleased with her) said Nay, had it been so as you said, it would have been thus. It is no sin on him not to go around them. This verse was revealed about the Ansaar, they used to perform hajj for Manat. Manat was erected in front of Qudaid. Hence they used to avoid going around Al Safa and Al Marwah. When Islam came, they asked the Apostle of Allaah ﷺ about it. Allaah, the Exalted therefore revealed the verse “Lo! (The Mountains) Al Safa’ and Al Marwah are among the indications of Allaah. (Using translation from Abū Dāʾūd 1901)
[Machine] And why? I said, "Indeed, Allah says: 'Indeed, Safa and Marwa are among the symbols of Allah. So whoever makes Hajj to the House or performs 'umrah - there is no blame upon him for walking between them.' " [Al-Baqarah 158] She said, "O nephew of mine, if it were as you say, then there would be no blame upon him for not walking between them. Allah perfected the Hajj of a man and his 'umrah when he does not walk between Safa and Marwa. Do you know the reason for that? The Ansar used to circumambulate around an idol on the shore of the sea during the time of Jahiliyyah (pre-Islamic era), then they would come and perform the Sa'i between Safa and Marwa, and then shave their heads. When Islam came, they disliked to perform the Sa'i between them, because of what they used to do between them during the time of Jahiliyyah. So Allah revealed: 'Indeed, Safa and Marwa are among the symbols of Allah. So whoever makes Hajj to the House or performs 'umrah - there is no blame upon him for walking between them. And whoever does good voluntarily - then indeed, Allah is appreciative and Knowing.' " [Al-Baqarah 158] So the people returned and performed the Sa'i.
[Machine] The saying of Allah, "Indeed, Safa and Marwa are among the symbols of Allah. So whoever makes Hajj to the House or performs 'umrah - there is no blame upon him for walking between them." [Surah Al-Baqarah 2:158]. So I said to 'Aisha, "By Allah, no one is obliged not to walk between Safa and Marwa." 'Aisha said, "What a bad thing you have said, O nephew of my sister! If this verse was as you said it was, indeed it would be no blame on anyone that they do not walk between them. However, it was actually revealed about how the Ansar (people of Medina) used to perform tawaf around the idol Manat that they used to worship at Masahal. It was considered undesirable for anyone to perform tawaf between Safa and Marwa. When they asked the Messenger of Allah ﷺ about it, Allah revealed this verse: "Indeed, Safa and Marwa are among the symbols of Allah." [Surah Al-Baqarah 2:158]. 'Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) said, "And indeed the Messenger of Allah ﷺ performed tawaf between them.” So there is no blame upon anyone to leave tawaf around Safa and Marwa. 9360 Abu 'Abdullah Al-Hafiz informed us Abu 'Amr bin Abi Ja'far informed us Abdullah bin Muhammad informed us Muhammad bin Rafi' informed us Hujayn bin Al-Muthanna informed us Laith from 'Uqail from Ibn Shihab who mentioned the hadith in the same manner, and he added, "So I informed Abu Bakr bin 'Abdur-Rahman bin Al-Harith bin Hisham about what 'Urwah narrated to me from 'Aisha." Abu Bakr bin 'Abdur-Rahman said, "This knowledge and this order was not something I heard of. I have certainly heard men of knowledge saying that except for those who 'Aisha mentioned, those who used to perform tawaf around Safa and Marwa out of reverence for Masahal. Allah mentioned tawaf around the House, but He did not mention tawaf around Safa and Marwa. So O Messenger of Allah, do we need permission from you to perform tawaf around Safa and Marwa?" Then Allah revealed the Ayah: "Indeed, Safa and Marwa are among the symbols of Allah. So whoever makes Hajj to the House or performs 'umrah - there is no blame upon him for walking between them." [Surah Al-Baqarah 2:158]. Abu Bakr said, "Now I understand that this Ayah was revealed about both groups: those who were considered to be doing something undesirable during the time of Jahiliyyah by performing tawaf around Safa and Marwa, and those who used to perform tawaf around Safa and Marwa along with tawaf around the House, when it was mentioned."
[Machine] "Indeed, Safa and Marwa were among the rites of Jahiliyyah (pre-Islamic era), but when Islam came, we abandoned them. Then Allah revealed, 'Indeed, Safa and Marwa are among the symbols of Allah.' [Surah Al-Baqarah 2:158]"
[Machine] As for the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, he circled the Kaaba, then performed two units of prayer, then circled between Safa and Marwah, then recited "Indeed in the Messenger of Allah you have a good example" [Al-Ahzab 21]. They narrated it from the narration of Ibn Jurayj.
[Machine] "And Abu Amr Al-Adīb informed us that Abu Bakr Al-Isma‘īlī narrated to us that Abu Al-Qāsim Al-Baghawī reported from Surayj and ‘Amr the Critic and Ibn ‘Abbād and Ibn Al-Muqri’ and Ziyād ibn Ayyūb who all said: Sufyān narrated to us from ‘Amr from Jabir that we asked him about a man who performed Tawaf around the Ka‘bah but did not perform Sa‘i between Safa and Marwah during ‘Umrah. Does he have to bring his wife with him? He said, 'No.' And they also asked Ibn ‘Umar, and Ibn ‘Umar said: This is what the Messenger of Allah ﷺ did. He performed Tawaf around the Ka‘bah seven times and prayed two Rak‘ahs behind the Maqam and performed Sa‘i between Safa and Marwah seven times. And indeed in the Messenger of Allah, you have an excellent example (to follow)." [Surah Al-Ahzab, verse 21]
Abu Amr informed us, and Abu Bakr narrated to me, and Abu Ya‘la narrated to us, and Abu Khaythamah reported from Sufyan, from ‘Amr who said: We asked Ibn ‘Umar about a man who came for ‘Umrah and performed Tawaf around the Ka‘bah but did not perform Sa‘i between Safa and Marwah. Does he have to bring his wife with him? Ibn ‘Umar said: He mentioned a narration similar to theirs from Sufyan.

[Machine] About a group of women from the Bani Abdul Dar tribe who met the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and said: "We entered the house of Ibn Abi Hussein and looked out of a broken door. We saw the Messenger of Allah ﷺ exerting himself in his ritual walk (during Hajj) until he reached a certain spot in the Masaa where he stopped and faced the people. He said, 'O people! Make haste, for the Sa'y (going back and forth) has been prescribed for you.'"

[Machine] I entered with some women from the Quraysh into the house of the family of Abu Husayn, to see the Messenger of Allah ﷺ while he was walking between Safa and Marwa. I saw him walking, and his lower garment was spinning due to the intensity of his walking. I even said: "I could see his knees." And I heard him saying: "Hasten, for Allah has prescribed walking between Safa and Marwa for you."

[Machine] I looked at the Prophet ﷺ while I was in a room between Safa and Marwa, and he said, "O people, Allah has ordained upon you the Sa'y, so perform it." Mahran ibn Abi 'Umar narrated from Thawri.

[Machine] "He used to say that no one performs Hajj, whether they are near or far, except by circumambulating between Safa and Marwa. And indeed, women do not break their Ihram until they have completed the Sa'i between Safa and Marwa."
