[Machine] The first instance in which women used a waistband was by the mother of Ishmael. She used a waistband to cover her tracks from Sarah. Then, Abraham, ﷺ , brought her and her son, Ishmael, who was still nursing, to a location near the Sacred House (Kaaba) where there was no one and no water in Mecca at that time. He left them there with a bag containing some dates and a water skin. Then Abraham, ﷺ , started to leave. Ishmael's mother followed him and asked, "O Abraham, where are you going, leaving us in this valley where there is no companionship and nothing?" She asked him this three times, but he did not turn to her. She then asked, "Did Allah command you to do this?" He replied, "Yes." She said, "Then He will not neglect us." So she returned, and Abraham continued on his way. When he reached a location where they could not see him, he faced the direction of the Sacred House and raised his hands, praying, "O Allah, I have settled some of my descendants in a barren valley near Your forbidden House," until he reached "so that they may be thankful" (Ibrahim 14:37).

Ishmael's mother continued to nurse him and drink from the water until the water in the skin ran out. She became thirsty, and so did her son, who began to wail from hunger. She looked at him twisting in agony and couldn't bear to watch, so she set off. She found the hill of Safa nearby and climbed it, looking into the valley to see if she could see anyone, but she saw no one. She descended from Safa and, when she reached the valley, she lifted the hem of her garment and ran like an exhausted person until she crossed it. She reached the hill of Marwa and climbed it, looking to see if she could see anyone, but she saw no one. She repeated this seven times. The Prophet ﷺ said, "That is why the people make the Sa'i (ritual walking) between them."

When she reached Marwa on the seventh round, she heard a voice. She said to herself, "Hush!" Then she listened again and heard it. She said, "I have heard you; if you have any aid, help us." She found the angel at the location of Zamzam, who dug with his heel or perhaps with his wing until the water appeared. She began to make a basin around it and filled her water skin while the water was still bubbling up. Ibn Abbas said the Prophet ﷺ said, "May Allah have mercy on Ishmael's mother; if she had left Zamzam or not scooped from it, Zamzam would have been a flowing stream." She drank and nursed her child. The angel said to her, "Do not fear neglect, for this is the House of Allah which will be built by this boy and his father. Allah does not neglect His people." And he mentioned the story at length.  

أَوَّلُ مَا اتَّخَذَ النِّسَاءُ الْمِنْطَقَ مِنْ قِبَلِ أُمِّ إِسْمَاعِيلَ اتَّخَذَتْ مِنْطَقًا؛ لَتُعَفِّيَ أَثَرَهَا عَلَى سَارَةَ ثُمَّ جَاءَ بِهَا إِبْرَاهِيمُ عَلَيْهِ السَّلَامُ وَبِابْنِهَا إِسْمَاعِيلَ عَلَيْهِ السَّلَامُ وَهِيَ تُرْضِعُهُ حَتَّى وَضَعَهُمَا عِنْدَ الْبَيْتِ وَلَيْسَ بِمَكَّةَ يَوْمَئِذٍ أَحَدٌ وَلَيْسَ بِهَا مَاءٌ فَوَضَعَهُمَا هُنَالِكَ وَوَضَعَ عِنْدَهُمَا جِرَابًا فِيهِ تَمْرٌ وَسِقَاءً فِيهِ مَاءٌ ثُمَّ قَفَّى إِبْرَاهِيمُ مُنْطَلِقًا فَتَبِعَتْهُ أُمُّ إِسْمَاعِيلَ وَقَالَتْ يَا إِبْرَاهِيمُ أَيْنَ تَذْهَبُ وَتَتْرُكُنَا بِهَذَا الْوَادِي الَّذِي لَيْسَ فِيهِ أَنِيسٌ وَلَا شَيْءٌ؟ قَالَتْ ذَلِكَ ثَلَاثَ مَرَّاتٍ وَجَعَلَ لَا يَلْتَفِتُ فَقَالَتْ لَهُ آللَّهُ أَمَرَكَ بِهَذَا؟ قَالَ نَعَمْ قَالَتْ إِذًا لَا يُضَيِّعُنَا ثُمَّ رَجَعَتْ وَانْطَلَقَ إِبْرَاهِيمُ حَتَّى إِذَا كَانَ عِنْدَ الْبَيْتِ حَيْثُ لَا يَرَوْنَهُ اسْتَقْبَلَ بِوَجْهِهِ الْبَيْتَ ثُمَّ دَعَا بِهَذِهِ الدَّعَوَاتِ وَرَفَعَ يَدَيْهِ وَقَالَ {رَبِّ إِنِّي أَسَكَنْتُ مِنْ ذُرِّيَّتِي بِوَادٍ غَيْرِ ذِي زَرْعٍ عِنْدَ بَيْتِكَ الْمُحَرَّمِ} حَتَّى بَلَغَ {لَعَلَّهُمْ يَشْكُرُونَ} [إبراهيم 37] فَجَعَلَتْ أُمُّ إِسْمَاعِيلَ تُرْضِعُ إِسْمَاعِيلَ وَتَشْرَبُ مِنْ ذَلِكَ الْمَاءِ حَتَّى إِذَا نَفِدَ مَا فِي السِّقَاءِ عَطِشَتْ وَعَطِشَ ابْنُهَا وَجَاعَ وَجَعَلَتْ تَنْظُرُ إِلَيْهِ يَتَلَوَّى أَوْ قَالَ يَتَلَبَّطُ فَانْطَلَقَتْ كَرَاهِيَةَ أَنْ تَنْظُرَ إِلَيْهِ فَوَجَدَتِ الصَّفَا أَقْرَبَ جَبَلٍ فِي الْأَرْضِ يَلِيهَا فَقَامَتْ عَلَيْهِ ثُمَّ اسْتَقْبَلَتِ الْوَادِيَ تَنْظُرُ هَلْ تَرَى أَحَدًا فَلَمْ تَرَ أَحَدًا فَهَبَطَتْ مِنَ الصَّفَا حَتَّى إِذَا بَلَغَتِ الْوَادِيَ رَفَعَتْ طَرَفَ دِرْعِهَا ثُمَّ سَعَتْ سَعْيَ الْإِنْسَانِ الْمَجْهُودِ حَتَّى جَاوَزَتِ الْوَادِيَ ثُمَّ أَتَتِ الْمَرْوَةَ فَقَامَتْ عَلَيْهَا فَنَظَرَتْ هَلْ تَرَى أَحَدًا فَلَمْ تَرَ أَحَدًا فَفَعَلَتْ ذَلِكَ سَبْعَ مَرَّاتٍ قَالَ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ فَلِذَلِكَ سَعَى النَّاسُ بَيْنَهُمَا فَلَمَّا أَشْرَفَتْ عَلَى الْمَرْوَةِ سَمِعَتْ صَوْتًا فَقَالَتْ صَهٍ تُرِيدُ نَفْسَهَا ثُمَّ تَسَمَّعَتْ أَيْضًا فَسَمِعَتْ فَقَالَتْ قَدْ أُسْمِعْتُ إنْ كَانَ عِنْدَكَ غِوَاثٌ فَإِذَا هِيَ بِالْمَلَكِ عِنْدَ مَوْضِعِ زَمْزَمَ فَبَحَثَ بِعَقِبِهِ أَوْ قَالَ بِجَنَاحِهِ حَتَّى ظَهَرَ الْمَاءُ فَجَعَلَتْ تُحَوِّضُهُ وَجَعَلَتْ تَغْرِفُ مِنَ الْمَاءِ فِي سِقَائِهَا وَهِيَ تَفُورُ بِقَدْرِ مَا تَغْرِفُ قَالَ قَالَ ابْنُ عَبَّاسٍ فَقَالَ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ يَرْحَمُ اللهُ أُمَّ إِسْمَاعِيلَ لَوْ تَرَكَتْ زَمْزَمَ أَوْ قَالَ لَوْ لَمْ تَغْرِفْ مِنَ الْمَاءِ لَكَانَتْ زَمْزَمُ عَيْنًا مَعِينًا قَالَ فَشَرِبَتْ وَأَرْضَعَتْ وَلَدَهَا وَقَالَ لَهَا الْمَلَكُ لَا تَخَافِي مِنَ الضَّيْعَةِ فَإِنَّ هَا هُنَا بَيْتَ اللهِ يَبْنِيهِ هَذَا الْغُلَامُ وَأَبُوهُ فَإِنَّ اللهَ لَا يُضَيِّعُ أَهْلَهُ وَذَكَرَ الْحَدِيثَ بِطُولِهِ
