12. Ḥajj and ʿUmrah
A man from the Companions of the Prophet ﷺ came to Umar ibn al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him). He bore witness before him that when he (the Prophet) was suffering from a disease of which he died he heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ prohibiting performing of umrah before hajj. (Using translation from Abū Dāʾūd 1793)
[Machine] To some of the companions of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ , the Messenger of Allah ﷺ forbade the arrangement of the dominoes. They said, "O Allah, yes." He said, "And I bear witness." He said, "Do you know that the Prophet ﷺ forbade the arrangement of the dominoes?" They said, "O Allah, yes." He said, "And I bear witness." He said, "Do you know that the Prophet ﷺ forbade wearing gold except as a cut piece?" They said, "O Allah, yes." He said, "And I bear witness." He said, "Do you know that the Prophet ﷺ forbade combining Hajj and Umrah?" They said, "O Allah, no." He said, "By Allah, it is so."
[Machine] We enjoyed being with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ during the revelation of the Quran, so a man should say his opinion freely according to what he wishes.
[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ sent me to my people's land. When it was time for Hajj, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ performed Hajj, and I also performed Hajj. I went to him while he was descending from Al-Abtah and he asked me, "With what did you intend to perform Ihram, O Abdullah bin Qais?" I replied, "I intended to say Labbayk with a Hajj like the Hajj of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ ." He said, "You have done well." Then he asked me, "Did you bring a Hadi (sacrificial animal)?" I replied, "No." He said, "Then go and perform Tawaf around the Kaaba and go between Safa and Marwa, then release your Ihram." So, I went and did as he instructed. I approached a woman from my people, and she washed my head with sidr and released my hair. Then I entered the state of Ihram on the day of Tarwiyah (8th of Dhul-Hijjah) and continued to give fatwas to the people in accordance with what the Messenger of Allah ﷺ had instructed me, until he passed away and Abu Bakr became the Caliph. During the time of Umar's caliphate, as I was standing near the Black Stone and the Maqam, giving fatwas to the people in accordance with what the Messenger of Allah ﷺ had instructed me, a man came to me and interrupted me. He said, "Do not rush with your fatwas, for the Commander of the Believers has introduced changes in the rituals." So, I addressed the people and said, "Whoever we used to give fatwas based on a certain ruling, let him wait for it until the Commander of the Believers comes, and then complete the rites according to his instructions." When Umar arrived, I went to him and said, "O Commander of the Believers, have changes been made in the rituals?" He replied, "Yes, we should follow the Sunnah of our Prophet ﷺ . He did not release the Ihram until after sacrificing the Hadi, and we should also follow the Book of our Lord, as it commands us to complete the rites."
[Machine] There is a man who told you about some of your youth, for you do not know what the commander of the faithful did in the rituals after you until he met him later and asked him, and Umar said to him: "I know that the Prophet ﷺ did it and his companions, but I disliked for them to be seen wearing them under the swords, and then they return with their heads dripping." And Abu Abdullah al-Hafiz informed us that Abu al-Fadl ibn Ibrahim informed us that Ahmad ibn Salamah informed us that Muhammad ibn Bashshar and Muhammad ibn al-Muthanna said: Muhammad ibn Jafar mentioned it similarly, except that he said: "Then they go for their pilgrimage and their heads drip", and he did not mention his saying: "And his companions."
[Machine] Aisha, the wife of the Prophet ﷺ, informed him about the Prophet ﷺ performing Umrah and the people performing it along with him, just as Salim bin Abdullah had informed me, who had heard it from Abdullah bin Umar, who had heard it from the Prophet ﷺ. So, I said to Salim bin Abdullah, "Why did you prohibit me from performing Umrah, while the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and the people have performed it?" Salim replied, "Abdullah bin Umar narrated to me that Umar bin Al-Khattab said, 'The best Umrah is the one done separately from the months of Hajj, and the months of Hajj are well-known: Shawwal, Dhul-Qa'dah, and Dhul-Hijjah. So, you should perform Hajj during these months exclusively, making it sincere for Allah's sake. And perform Umrah in other months, accompanying it with Hajj in order to complete Umrah. This is according to the saying of Allah ﷻ, 'And complete the Hajj and Umrah for Allah' (Quran 2:196).' That is, the Umrah is completed when a person performs it along with his Hajj, and it is not completed unless the person sacrifices an animal or fasts if he cannot find an animal to sacrifice, for three days during Hajj and seven days when he returns to his family. And Umrah in other months can be completed without sacrificing or fasting." Umar bin Al-Khattab intended to do that in the best manner, following the command of Allah to leave off Umrah until Hajj is performed, in order to complete the Umrah that Allah has ordered, and he also intended to visit the House of Allah twice every year. He disliked that people perform Umrah before Hajj, and if that was enforced on people, they would not be allowed to visit the House of Allah more than once a year. The Imams (scholars) became extremely strict on prohibiting Umrah until people began to consider it forbidden. By my life! The Imams did not consider it forbidden, but they only followed what Umar bin Al-Khattab had commanded in that matter, seeking goodness.
[Machine] About the matter of the pilgrimage, he ordered it and it was said to him, "You are contradicting your father." He said, "Indeed, my father did not say what you are saying. Rather, he said: Perform 'Umrah by itself from the pilgrimage." Meaning, 'Umrah is not completed in the months of Hajj except with a sacrifice, and he wanted to visit the Ka'bah in other months besides the months of Hajj. So, you made it forbidden and punished people for it, while Allah made it lawful, and the Messenger of Allah acted upon it. He said, "If they increase in arguing with him, he would say: Is the Book of Allah not worthier to be followed than Umar?"
[Machine] Abdullah ibn Umar used to give fatwas based on what Allah revealed regarding the permissibility of enjoying oneself during the tawaf and where the Messenger of Allah went silent. People would ask Abdullah ibn Umar, "How can you go against your father when he prohibited that?" Abdullah ibn Umar would respond to them, "Woe to you! Don't you fear Allah? Do you not see that if Umar had forbidden it, he would be seeking good and completion of the Umrah? So why do you make it prohibited when Allah has made it permissible and the Messenger of Allah has acted upon it? Is the Messenger of Allah more deserving to be followed or Umar? Umar did not say to you that doing Umrah during the months of Hajj is forbidden, but rather he said that completing the Umrah is to be done separately from the months of Hajj."
[Machine] Ali, whoever performs the pilgrimage with devotion is good, and whoever delights in worldly pleasures has followed the Quran and the Sunnah of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ .
[Machine] Jabir, on my hands, we enjoyed ourselves during the time of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ . When Umar delivered a sermon, he said, "Indeed, Allah permitted His Messenger ﷺ whatever He willed, and the Quran has been revealed in stages. So separate your Hajj from your Umrah, and abstain from marrying these women. I will not punish a man who has married a woman except with stoning."
I asked Ibn Abbas (Allah be pleased with them) about Tamattu' in Hajj and he permitted it, whereas Ibn Zubair had forbidden it. He (Ibn 'Abbas) said: This is the mother of Ibn Zubair who states that Messenger of Allah ﷺ had permitted it, so you better go to her and ask her about it. He (Muslim al-Qurri said): So we went to her and she was a bulky blind lady and she said: Verily Messenger of Allah ﷺ permitted it. (Using translation from Muslim 1238a)
[Machine] They both came together, and when Ali saw that, he welcomed both of them and said, "Here I am, answering the call for Umrah and Hajj together." Uthman then said, "Do you see me prohibiting people from doing something while you do it?" Ali responded, "I would never abandon the Sunnah of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ because of what someone among the people says."
[Machine] Ali has whatever you want of a matter that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ did and you forbid? He said: Leave us from you. He said: Indeed, I cannot leave you. So when Ali saw that, he embraced them all.
[Machine] "Ali, you have known that we have enjoyed with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ." He said, "Yes, but we were fearful."
[Machine] "He passed by Abi Dharr with a robe, so he mentioned it to him, and he said: 'It was only for us, not for you.'"
[Machine] The enjoyment of the pilgrimage for the companions of Muhammad ﷺ was especially in the narration of the hadith of Abu Muawiya and in the narration of Abu Bakr, he said: "Indeed, the enjoyment of the pilgrimage was specifically for us."
Abu Dharr used to say about a person who makes the intention of Hajj but he repeal it for the ‘Umrah (that will not be valid). This cancellation of hajj for ‘Umrah was specially meant for the people who accompanied the Apostle of Allaah ﷺ. (Using translation from Abū Dāʾūd 1807)
[Machine] Abdullah said, "He is the son of Masood, Hajj is a well-known obligation in which Umrah is not included."
[Machine] That each of them should have disheveled hair and be dusty, according to the established Sunnah from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ , it is permissible to combine the acts of enjoyment, reciting the Quran, and performing them separately. It is proven through the Prophet's ﷺ individual pilgrimage, and through the difference of opinion amongst scholars regarding the dislike of combining the acts of enjoyment and reciting the Quran without performing them separately, as it is considered better to separate the acts of the Hajj from the acts of the Umrah. And Allah knows best.
