12. Ḥajj and ʿUmrah (4/34)
[Machine] From Ibn Sirin, it is reported as Marfu' (narration) and the authentic (hadith) is considered as Mawquf (stopping).
[Machine] I heard from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ something about it, so I said, "Umrah is obligatory just like Hajj."
[Machine] Abdullah said, "You have been commanded to establish four [things]: establish the prayer, give the zakat, perform the Hajj, and perform the Umrah to the House. And Hajj is the greater Hajj, and Umrah is the lesser Hajj."
[Machine] Umrah is obligatory just like Hajj, and it is known as the lesser pilgrimage.
[Machine] The greater pilgrimage is the day of sacrifice, and the lesser pilgrimage is Umrah. It has been narrated in this regard from the Prophet ﷺ.
[Machine] The Prophet of Allah ﷺ wrote a letter to the people of Yemen containing information about religious obligations, practices, and charity. He sent the letter with Amr ibn Hazm and in it, he mentioned that performing Umrah is the lesser pilgrimage compared to Hajj.
[Machine] I saw the Messenger of Allah, ﷺ , standing in the valley giving a sermon and he said, "Umrah has entered into Hajj until the Day of Resurrection."

I saw ʿAli and ʿUthman ؓ between Makkah and Madinah. ʿUthman was telling people not to do tamattuʿ or join them together (Hajj and ‘Umrah, i.e., qiran). When ʿAli ؓ saw that, he entered ihram for both of them together and said: Here I am for ʿUmrah and Hajj together ‘Uthman ؓ said: You see me telling the people not to do that and you do it? He said: I will not give up a Sunnah of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ for the opinion of anyone among the people. (Using translation from Aḥmad 1139)
[Machine] "And the other (person) said: Both of them? So I went out as if carrying them on my back until I reached Umar. So I mentioned to him what they said. He said: Indeed, they do not say anything. You have been guided by the tradition of your Prophet ﷺ , the wording of the hadith of Abu Mu'awiyah."

[Machine] "We set out with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ during the farewell pilgrimage and performed Umrah. Then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, 'Whoever has brought a sacrificial animal should perform the rituals of Hajj along with the Umrah, but should not assume the state of Ihram until he has done so for both. And he mentioned the rest of the Hadith that Malik narrated in the authentic narration."
[Machine] We (I) accompanied the Prophet ﷺ for the Farewell Hajj, and I performed Umrah but did not offer the sacrifice. So the Prophet ﷺ said, "Whoever has the sacrificial animal with them, should perform the Hajj with their Umrah, and they should not remove the Ihram until they have completed both of them." So I got my menses, and when I reached the night of Arafah, I said, "O Messenger of Allah, I performed Umrah, so what should I do with my Hajj?" He replied, "Undo your hair, comb it, and release yourself from the Umrah, and perform the Hajj." So when I completed my Hajj, Abdur Rahman ibn Abi Bakr was ordered to perform for me the Tan‘im. (Tan‘im was the place where I had discontinued the Umrah).
[Machine] The Messenger of Allah, ﷺ , mentioned his wives regarding the cow in the hadith reported by Ibn Uyaynah. Some of them said in the hadith that he slaughtered it. Abdul Aziz al-Majishun narrated from Abdul Rahman bin Al-Qasim about this hadith that he gave the cow as a gift on behalf of his wives. Umrah narrated from Aisha, may Allah be pleased with her, that the Messenger of Allah, ﷺ , slaughtered the cow on behalf of his wives.
[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ sacrificed one cow for the family of Muhammad ﷺ during the Farewell Pilgrimage. This incident was narrated by Yahya ibn Sa'id, through the narration of 'Amrah, who said: "The Messenger of Allah ﷺ sacrificed cows for his wives." This statement indicates, if Allah wills, that it happened.

[Machine] He heard Jabir saying that the Prophet ﷺ sacrificed a cow on behalf of his wives during his pilgrimage.
[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ sacrificed a cow for those of his wives who had completed their Hajj. Al-Walid ibn Muslim performed the sacrifice and did not mention hearing it from Al-Awza'i and Muhammad ibn Isma'il al-Bukhari. He was afraid that Yusuf ibn As-Saffar had taught it to him, and Allah knows best. 8781 Abu Abdullah Al-Hafiz informed us, and Abu Ali Al-Husayn ibn Ali Al-Hafiz informed me, and Abu Abdullah Al-Rahman Ahmad ibn Shuayb Al-Faqih in Misr narrated to us, and Muhammad ibn Abdullah ibn Maymun Al-Iskandarani narrated to us, and Al-Walid ibn Muslim narrated to us, and Al-Awza'i narrated to me, and Yahya ibn Abi Kathir mentioned it and said in the Farewell Pilgrimage: If his statement "Al-Awza'i informed us" is preserved, then the Hadith is authentic.

Ibn ʿUmar intended to perform Hajj in the year when Al-Hajjaj attacked Ibn Az-Zubair. Somebody said to Ibn ʿUmar, "There is a danger of an impending war between them." Ibn ʿUmar said, "Verily, in Messenger of Allah ﷺ you have a good example. (And if it happened as you say) then I would do the same as Messenger of Allah ﷺ had done. I make you witness that I have decided to perform ʿUmra." Then he set out and when he reached Al-Baida', he said, "The ceremonies of both Hajj and ʿUmra are similar. I make you witness that I have made Hajj compulsory for me along with ʿUmra." He drove (to Mecca) a Hadi which he had bought from (a place called) Qudaid and did not do more than that. He did not slaughter the Hadi or finish his Ihram, or shave or cut short his hair till the day of slaughtering the sacrifices (10th Dhul-Hijja). Then he slaughtered his Hadi and shaved his head and considered the first Tawaf (of Safa and Marwa) as sufficient for Hajj and ʿUmra. Ibn ʿUmar said, "Messenger of Allah ﷺ did the same." (Using translation from Bukhārī 1640)

[Machine] Ibn Umar performed Umrah before the Prophet ﷺ performed Hajj.
[Machine] Whoever among you desires to perform Umrah, let them perform Umrah for indeed, if I had not given an Umrah as a gift, I would have performed Umrah. There were some individuals who performed Umrah, while others performed Hajj. I was among those who performed Umrah and arrived in Makkah while I was in a state of menstruation. Then, I met the Prophet ﷺ on the day of Arafah and informed him of my situation. He said, "Perform Tawaf, cut your hair, and leave the state of menstruation. Then, perform Hajj with your family until you complete it. When you finish, Allah will count it as your Umrah, and there will be no animal sacrifice, fasting, or charity required." His statement, "Allah has counted her Umrah" was regarding the statement of 'Urwa, and the reason why no animal sacrifice was required is because the Prophet ﷺ had already performed it on her behalf, as well as for his wives who performed Umrah with him. This hadith is mentioned in Sahihain from various chains, from Hisham ibn 'Urwa. Bukhari also narrated it from Muhammad ibn Ibrahim, who narrated it from Ahmad ibn Salama, who narrated it from Ishaq ibn Ibrahim, who narrated it from Abu Mu'awiya, who narrated it from Hisham ibn 'Urwa, who narrated it from his father, who narrated it from 'Aisha. She said: "We went out with the Prophet ﷺ for the sighting of the crescent of Dhu al-Hijjah, and the Prophet ﷺ said to us: 'Whoever among you desires to perform Hajj, let them perform Hajj, and whoever desires to perform Umrah, let them perform Umrah.' Then, he mentioned the meaning of the first statement and added the words of 'Urwa to clarify it."

[Machine] With my lord, I entered upon Umm Salamah and said, "I want to perform Umrah before Hajj." She replied, "If you wish, perform Umrah before Hajj, and if you wish, after Hajj." So I said, "They say that whoever performs a Surrah (a form of minor pilgrimage) should not perform Umrah before Hajj." So I asked the Mothers of the believers and they said what she had said. I went back to her and informed her, so she said, "Yes, and may Allah heal you. I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say, 'O family of Muhammad, perform Umrah within Hajj.'"

[Machine] About the Hajj of the Prophet ﷺ , he said: The Prophet ﷺ commanded us after completing the Tawaf to release our Ihram. The Prophet ﷺ said: "When you intend to depart to Mina, release your Ihram." So we released our Ihram from Al-Bat'hah.
I left for Mecca for Hajj-at-Tamattuʿ assuming Ihram for ʿUmra. I reached Mecca three days before the day of Tarwiya (8th Dhul-Hijja). Some people of Mecca said to me, "Your Hajj will be like the Hajj performed by the people of Mecca (i.e. you will lose the superiority of assuming Ihram from the Miqat). So I went to ʿAta' asking him his view about it. He said, "Jabir bin ʿAbdullah narrated to me, 'I performed Hajj with Messenger of Allah ﷺ on the day when he drove camels with him. The people had assumed Ihram for Hajj-al-Ifrad. The Prophet ﷺ ordered them to finish their Ihram after Tawaf round the Kaʿba, and between Safa and Marwa and to cut short their hair and then to stay there (in Mecca) as non-Muhrims till the day of Tarwiya (i.e. 8th of Dhul-Hijja) when they would assume Ihram for Hajj and they were ordered to make the Ihram with which they had come as for ʿUmra only. They asked, 'How can we make it ʿUmra (Tamattuʿ) as we have intended to perform Hajj?' The Prophet ﷺ said, 'Do what I have ordered you. Had I not brought the Hadi with me, I would have done the same, but I cannot finish my Ihram till the Hadi reaches its destination (i.e. is slaughtered).' So, they did (what he ordered them to do)." "We came with the Messenger of Allah on the fourth day of Dhul-Hijjah. The prophet said: 'Exit Ihram and make it Umrah.' We were distressed and upset by that. News of that reached the Messenger of Allah and he said: 'O people, exit Ihram. Were if not for the Hadi that I brought with me, I would have done what you are doing.' So we exited Ihram, and had intercourse with our wives, ad we did everything that the non-Muhrim does until the day of At-Tarwiyah, when we put Makkah behind us (When we headed for Mina) and entered Ihram for Hajj." ' Aisha said, "We set out with Messenger of Allah ﷺs in the months of Hajj, and (in) the nights of Hajj, and at the time and places of Hajj and in a state of Hajj. We dismounted at Sarif (a village six miles from Mecca). The Prophet ﷺ then addressed his companions and said, "Anyone who has not got the Hadi and likes to do Umra instead of Hajj may do so (i.e. Hajj-al-Tamattuʿ) and anyone who has got the Hadi should not finish the Ihram after performing ' ʿUmra). (i.e. Hajj-al-Qiran). Aisha added, "The companions of the Prophet ﷺ obeyed the above (order) and some of them (i.e. who did not have Hadi) finished their Ihram after Umra." Messenger of Allah ﷺ and some of his companions were resourceful and had the Hadi with them, they could not perform Umra (alone) (but had to perform both Hajj and Umra with one Ihram). Aisha added, "Messenger of Allah ﷺ came to me and saw me weeping and said, "What makes you weep, O Hantah?" I replied, "I have heard your conversation with your companions and I cannot perform the Umra." He asked, "What is wrong with you?' I replied, ' I do not offer the prayers (i.e. I have my menses).' He said, ' It will not harm you for you are one of the daughters of Adam, and Allah has written for you (this state) as He has written it for them. Keep on with your intentions for Hajj and Allah may reward you that." Aisha further added, "Then we proceeded for Hajj till we reached Mina and I became clean from my menses. Then I went out from Mina and performed Tawaf round the Kaʿba." Aisha added, "I went along with the Prophet ﷺ in his final departure (from Hajj) till he dismounted at Al-Muhassab (a valley outside Mecca), and we too, dismounted with him." He called ' ʿAbdur-Rahman bin Abu Bakr and said to him, ' Take your sister outside the sanctuary of Mecca and let her assume Ihram for ' ʿUmra, and when you had finished ' ʿUmra, return to this place and I will wait for you both till you both return to me.' " ' Aisha added, " So we went out of the sanctuary of Mecca and after finishing from the ' ʿUmra and the Tawaf we returned to the Prophet ﷺ at dawn. He said, 'Have you performed the ' ʿUmra?' We replied in the affirmative. So he announced the departure amongst his companions and the people set out for the journey, and the Prophet: too left for Medina.'' Messenger of Allah ﷺ performed four ʿUmras, all in the month of Dhul-Qa'da, except the one which he performed with his Hajj (i.e. in Dhul-Hijja). He performed one ʿUmra from Al-Hudaibiya in Dhul- Qa'da, another ʿUmra in the following year in Dhul Qa'da a third from Al-Jirana where he distributed the war booty of Hunain, in Dhul Qa'da, and the fourth ʿUmra he performed was with his Hajj. Ibn Jurayj, who was severely criticized, said: 'The son of Muzahim told us.'
We went with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ with no other aim but that of Hajj till we came (to the place known as) Sarif; and there I entered in the state of menses. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ came to me while I was weeping. He said: What makes you weep? I said: Would that I had not come (for Pilgrimage) this year. He (the Holy Prophet) said: What has happened to you? You have perhaps entered the period of menses. I said: Yes. He said: This is what has been ordained for the daughters of Adam. Do what a pilgrim does except that you should not circumambulate the House, till you are purified (of the menses). She ('A'isha) said: When I came to Mecca, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to his companions: Make this (Ihram) the Ihram for 'Umra. So the people put off Ihram except those who had sacrificial animals with them. She ('A'isha) said: The Apostle of Allah ﷺ had the sacrificial animal with him, and so had Abu Bakr, 'Umar and other persons of means. They (those who had put off Ihram again) put on Ihram (for Hajj) when they marched (towards Mina), and it was the 8th of Dhu'l-Hijja. She ('A'isha) said: When it was the day of sacrifice (10th of Dhu'l-Hijja), I was purified, and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ commanded me and I did the circumambulation of Ifada. She said that the flesh of cow was sent to us. I said: What is it? They said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ has offered a cow as sacrifice on behalf of his wives. When it was the night at Hasba, I said: Messenger of Allah, people are coming back from Hajj and Umra, where as I am coming back from Hajj (alone). She (A'isha) reported: He (the Holy Prophet) commanded" Abd al-Rahman b. Abu Bakr to mount me upon his camel behind him. She ('A'isha) said: I was very young and I well remember that I dozed off and my face touched the hind part of the haudaj (camel litter) till we came to Tan'im, and entered into the state of Ihram in lieu of Umra (which I for the time being abandoned) and which the people had performed.
Jabir bin Abdullah said The Apostle of Allaah ﷺ and his companions raised their voices in talbiyah for Hajj. No one of them had brought the sacrificial animals with them except the Prophet ﷺ and Talhah. Ali (may Allaah be pleased with him) had returned from Yemen and had brought sacrificial animals with him. He said I raised my voice in talbiyah for which the Apostle of Allaah ﷺ raised his voice. The Prophet ﷺ commanded his companions to change it into ‘Umrah and clip their hair after running (between Al Safa’ and Al Marwah), and then take off their ihram except those who brought the sacrificial animals with them. They remarked should we go to Mina with our penises dripping with prostatic fluid? These remarks reached the Apostle of Allaah ﷺ. Thereupon he said “had I known before hand about my affair what I have come to know later, I would not have brought sacrificial animals. Had I not brought sacrificial animals with me, I would have put off my ihram. “ (Using translation from Abū Dāʾūd 1789)

He replied, "Indeed, it is for eternity."
