12. Ḥajj and ʿUmrah (15/34)
We were in the company of Messenger of Allah ﷺ and we assumed the state of Ihram of Hajj and arrived at Mecca on the fourth of Dhul-Hijja. The Prophet ﷺ ordered us to perform the Tawaf around the Kaʿba and (Saʿi) between As-Safa and Al-Marwa and use our lhram just for ʿUmra, and finish the state of Ihram unless we had our Hadi with us. None of us had the Hadi with him except the Prophet ﷺ and Talha. ʿAli came from Yemen and brought the Hadi with him. ʿAli said, 'I had assumed the state of Ihram with the same intention as that with which Messenger of Allah ﷺ had assumed it. The people said, "How can we proceed to Mina and our male organs are dribbling?" Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "If I had formerly known what I came to know latterly, I would not have brought the Hadi, and had there been no Hadi with me, I would have finished my Ihram." Suraqa (bin Malik) met the Prophet ﷺ while he was throwing pebbles at the Jamrat-Al-ʿAqaba, and asked, "O Messenger of Allah ﷺ! Is this (permitted) for us only?" The Prophet ﷺ replied. "No, it is forever" ʿAisha had arrived at Mecca while she was menstruating, therefore the Prophet ﷺ ordered her to perform all the ceremonies of Hajj except the Tawaf around the Kaʿba, and not to perform her prayers unless and until she became clean . When they encamped at Al-Batha, ʿAisha said, "O Messenger of Allah ﷺ! You are proceeding after performing both Hajj and ʿUmra while I am proceeding with Hajj only?" So the Prophet ﷺ ordered ʿAbdur-Rahman bin Abu Bakr As-Siddiq to go with her to at-Tanʿim, and so she performed the ʿUmra in Dhul-Hijja after the days of the Hajj. The aforesaid tradition has also been transmitted by Jabir through a different chain of narrators. This version has The Prophet ﷺ said “Raise your voice in talbiyah for Hajj and then perform Hajj, and do so all the pilgrims do, except that you should not circumambulate the Hose(the Ka’bah) and should not pray. (Using translation from Abū Dāʾūd 1786)
[Machine] Regarding the scholars of the people of Madinah, they used to say that if a woman went around the Kaaba and then intended to go around Safa and Marwah but she started menstruating, she should continue to go around Safa and Marwah even if she is menstruating. Similarly, if one has sexual intercourse after circling the Kaaba and before performing Sa'i, they should also perform Sa'i.

‘Urwa bin Al Zubair said I said to A’ishah, wife of the Prophet ﷺ while I was a boy. What do you think about the pronouncement of Allaah, the Exalted “Lo! (The Mountains) Al Safa’ and Al Marwah are among the indications of Allaah. “I think there is no harm for anyone if he does not run between them. A’ishah(may Allah be pleased with her) said Nay, had it been so as you said, it would have been thus. It is no sin on him not to go around them. This verse was revealed about the Ansaar, they used to perform hajj for Manat. Manat was erected in front of Qudaid. Hence they used to avoid going around Al Safa and Al Marwah. When Islam came, they asked the Apostle of Allaah ﷺ about it. Allaah, the Exalted therefore revealed the verse “Lo! (The Mountains) Al Safa’ and Al Marwah are among the indications of Allaah. (Using translation from Abū Dāʾūd 1901)
[Machine] And why? I said, "Indeed, Allah says: 'Indeed, Safa and Marwa are among the symbols of Allah. So whoever makes Hajj to the House or performs 'umrah - there is no blame upon him for walking between them.' " [Al-Baqarah 158] She said, "O nephew of mine, if it were as you say, then there would be no blame upon him for not walking between them. Allah perfected the Hajj of a man and his 'umrah when he does not walk between Safa and Marwa. Do you know the reason for that? The Ansar used to circumambulate around an idol on the shore of the sea during the time of Jahiliyyah (pre-Islamic era), then they would come and perform the Sa'i between Safa and Marwa, and then shave their heads. When Islam came, they disliked to perform the Sa'i between them, because of what they used to do between them during the time of Jahiliyyah. So Allah revealed: 'Indeed, Safa and Marwa are among the symbols of Allah. So whoever makes Hajj to the House or performs 'umrah - there is no blame upon him for walking between them. And whoever does good voluntarily - then indeed, Allah is appreciative and Knowing.' " [Al-Baqarah 158] So the people returned and performed the Sa'i.
[Machine] The saying of Allah, "Indeed, Safa and Marwa are among the symbols of Allah. So whoever makes Hajj to the House or performs 'umrah - there is no blame upon him for walking between them." [Surah Al-Baqarah 2:158]. So I said to 'Aisha, "By Allah, no one is obliged not to walk between Safa and Marwa." 'Aisha said, "What a bad thing you have said, O nephew of my sister! If this verse was as you said it was, indeed it would be no blame on anyone that they do not walk between them. However, it was actually revealed about how the Ansar (people of Medina) used to perform tawaf around the idol Manat that they used to worship at Masahal. It was considered undesirable for anyone to perform tawaf between Safa and Marwa. When they asked the Messenger of Allah ﷺ about it, Allah revealed this verse: "Indeed, Safa and Marwa are among the symbols of Allah." [Surah Al-Baqarah 2:158]. 'Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) said, "And indeed the Messenger of Allah ﷺ performed tawaf between them.” So there is no blame upon anyone to leave tawaf around Safa and Marwa. 9360 Abu 'Abdullah Al-Hafiz informed us Abu 'Amr bin Abi Ja'far informed us Abdullah bin Muhammad informed us Muhammad bin Rafi' informed us Hujayn bin Al-Muthanna informed us Laith from 'Uqail from Ibn Shihab who mentioned the hadith in the same manner, and he added, "So I informed Abu Bakr bin 'Abdur-Rahman bin Al-Harith bin Hisham about what 'Urwah narrated to me from 'Aisha." Abu Bakr bin 'Abdur-Rahman said, "This knowledge and this order was not something I heard of. I have certainly heard men of knowledge saying that except for those who 'Aisha mentioned, those who used to perform tawaf around Safa and Marwa out of reverence for Masahal. Allah mentioned tawaf around the House, but He did not mention tawaf around Safa and Marwa. So O Messenger of Allah, do we need permission from you to perform tawaf around Safa and Marwa?" Then Allah revealed the Ayah: "Indeed, Safa and Marwa are among the symbols of Allah. So whoever makes Hajj to the House or performs 'umrah - there is no blame upon him for walking between them." [Surah Al-Baqarah 2:158]. Abu Bakr said, "Now I understand that this Ayah was revealed about both groups: those who were considered to be doing something undesirable during the time of Jahiliyyah by performing tawaf around Safa and Marwa, and those who used to perform tawaf around Safa and Marwa along with tawaf around the House, when it was mentioned."

[Machine] As for the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, he circled the Kaaba, then performed two units of prayer, then circled between Safa and Marwah, then recited "Indeed in the Messenger of Allah you have a good example" [Al-Ahzab 21]. They narrated it from the narration of Ibn Jurayj.

Does he have to bring his wife with him? He said, 'No.' And they also asked Ibn ‘Umar, and Ibn ‘Umar said: This is what the Messenger of Allah ﷺ did. He performed Tawaf around the Ka‘bah seven times and prayed two Rak‘ahs behind the Maqam and performed Sa‘i between Safa and Marwah seven times. And indeed in the Messenger of Allah, you have an excellent example (to follow)." [Surah Al-Ahzab, verse 21]
Abu Amr informed us, and Abu Bakr narrated to me, and Abu Ya‘la narrated to us, and Abu Khaythamah reported from Sufyan, from ‘Amr who said: We asked Ibn ‘Umar about a man who came for ‘Umrah and performed Tawaf around the Ka‘bah but did not perform Sa‘i between Safa and Marwah. Does he have to bring his wife with him? Ibn ‘Umar said: He mentioned a narration similar to theirs from Sufyan.

[Machine] "He used to say that no one performs Hajj, whether they are near or far, except by circumambulating between Safa and Marwa. And indeed, women do not break their Ihram until they have completed the Sa'i between Safa and Marwa."
12.171 [Machine] Beginning the Sa'i between Safa and Marwa
[Machine] She said, "O Ibrahim, where are you going and leaving us in this valley where there is no one and nothing?" She said that three times and he did not even turn around. Then she said to him, "Did Allah command you to do this?" He said, "Yes." She said, "Then He will not let us be lost." Then she turned and Ibrahim set off until he reached the place where they could not see him. He faced the house and made these supplications, raising his hands and saying, "My Lord, indeed I have settled some of my descendants in an uncultivated valley near Your sacred House, our Lord, that they may establish prayer. So make hearts among the people incline toward them and provide for them from the fruits that they might be grateful." [Ibrahim: 37] So the mother of Ismail nursed Ismail and drank from that water until the water in the water-skin ran out and she and her baby became thirsty and hungry. She looked at him as he writhed in pain or as the Prophet, ﷺ , said, as he turned one way and then another. She could not bear to look at him, so she went and found that Safa was the closest mountain to her. She climbed it and stood on it, looking to see if she could see anyone. When she did not see anyone, she descended from Safa and when she reached the valley, she lifted up the edge of her garment and hastened as much as she could until she crossed the valley and reached Marwah. She climbed it and stood on it, looking to see if she could see anyone. When she did not see anyone, she did that seven times. The Prophet, ﷺ , said, "That is why people run between them." When she had reached Marwah for the last time, she heard a voice, so she said, "Be quiet, for you are disturbing yourself." Then she listened again and heard it, so she said, "I have heard you, so if you have any assistance to offer, then help us." She began to look towards the direction of Al-Makam and she saw an angel digging the earth with his heel or his wing, until water appeared. She scooped it up and started to bring it with her in her water-skin, while the water flowed as much as she scooped up. The Prophet, ﷺ , said, "May Allah have mercy on the mother of Ismail. If she had not let the water flow and had not taken from it, then it would have been a flowing stream." She drank from it and gave some to her child, and the angel said to her, "Do not be afraid of being lost, for this is the House of Allah that this boy and his father will build, and Allah will never abandon them." And he mentioned the Hadith in full.

12.172 [Machine] Who left the intensity of effort behind in the valley and walked
“If I go quickly between Safa and Marwah, that is because I saw the Messenger of Allah ﷺ going quickly, and if I walk that is because I saw the Messenger of Allah ﷺ walking, even though I am an old man.” (Using translation from Ibn Mājah 2988)
12.173 [Machine] Circumambulating on horseback
[Machine] That the Messenger of Allah ﷺ circled the Kaaba during the Farewell Pilgrimage on a camel, taking hold of the corner with a staff, and their narrations were equal in their wording.
[Machine] That the Messenger of Allah, ﷺ , circled the Kaaba while he was on a camel. Every time he passed by the corner, he pointed to it with something in his hand and raised his voice in takbeer.
[Machine] The Messenger of Allah, ﷺ , arrived in Makkah while he was complaining. He circumambulated the Kaaba on his mount, and every time he reached the corner, he touched it with a polished staff that he had with him. When he finished his circumambulation, he rested and performed two units of prayer. Ali ibn Ahmad ibn Abdan informed us, Ahmad ibn Ubaid informed us, Abu Imran informed us, Abbas al-Narsi and Abdullah ibn A'laa said, Khaled narrated to us, from Yazid ibn Abi Ziyad, from Ikrimah, and he mentioned him.
[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ circumambulated the Kaaba during the Farewell Hajj on his mount, holding the corner (of the Kaaba) with his staff so that people could see him and he could supervise and be asked questions, for the people had crowded around him after the words of Abu Bakr's hadith.
Jabir bin ‘Abd Allah said The Prophet ﷺ performed the circumambulation of the House(the Ka’bah) on his Camel at the Farewell Pilgrimage and ran between Al Safa’ and Al Marwah, so that the people could see him, remain well informed about him and ask him questions(about Hajj) for the people surrounded him. (Using translation from Abū Dāʾūd 1880)
I said to Ibn ʿAbbas (Allah be pleased with them): Do you think that walking swiftly round the House in three circuits, and just walking in four circuits is the Sunnah (of the Holy Prophet), for your people say that it is Sunnah? Thereupon he (Ibn ʿAbbas) said: They have told the truth and the lie (too). I said: What do your words "They have told the truth and the lie (too)" imply? Thereupon he said: Messenger of Allah ﷺ came to Mecca and the polytheists said that Muhammad and his Companions had emaciated and would, therefore, be unable to circumambulate the House; and they felt jealous of him (the Holy Prophet). (It was due to this) that Messenger of Allah ﷺ commanded them to walk swiftly in three (circuits) and walk (normally) in four. I said to him: Inform me if it is Sunnah to observe Tawaf between al-Safa and al-Marwa while riding, for your people look upon it as Sunnah. He (Ibn ʿAbbas) said: They have told the truth and the lie too. I said: What do your words "They have told the truth and the lie too" imply? He said: When Messenger of Allah ﷺ had come to Mecca, there was such a large gathering of people around him that even the virgins had come out of their houses (to catch a glimpse of his face). And they were saying: He is Muhammad; He is Muhammad. Messenger of Allah ﷺ (was so gentle and kind) that the people were not beaten back (to make way) in front of him. When there was a throng (of people) around him, he rode (the she-camel). However, walking and trotting are better. (Using translation from Muslim 1264a)
[Machine] That the Messenger of Allah, ﷺ , performed tawaf (circumambulation) around Safa and Marwa on his camel, and that this is a sunnah (recommendation). I asked, "What is your saying that they both told the truth and lied?" He replied, "They both told the truth, as he performed tawaf on his camel, and they lied, as it is not a sunnah, for indeed people would not be kept away from him nor would they be diverted from him, so he performed tawaf on his camel in order for them to hear his words and see his place, and so that their hands may touch him."
[Machine] The Prophet ﷺ circled around the Kaaba on a camel during the Farewell Pilgrimage, touching the corners, disliking that people would be diverted from him.
[Machine] I saw the Prophet ﷺ circumambulating around the Ka'bah on a camel, taking hold of the Black Stone with his right hand, then kissing it. Then he went out to Safa and Marwa and completed seven rounds on his mount. Abu Ali Al-Rudhbary informed us by narrating from Muhammad bin Bakr, narrated by Abu Dawood, narrated by Muhammad bin Rafi, narrated by Abu Asim, who mentioned it.
[Machine] I heard Abu Tufail say, "I saw the Prophet ﷺ during the Farewell Pilgrimage, circumambulating the Kaaba on his mount, touching the corner with his stick. Abu Sa'eed ibn Abi Amr informed us, and Abu al-Abbas al-Asamm narrated from Ya'ya ibn Abi Talib, who narrated from Yazid ibn Abi Hakeem, who narrated from his grandfather Yazid ibn Mulayk, who mentioned it.
Al-Shafi'i (may Allah have mercy on him) said, "As for Shu'bah who circumambulated according to his precursor, he did so on foot because Jabir al-Muhkalee narrated from him that he walked three steps and then took four. Therefore, it is not permissible that Jabir is narrated about performing the Tawaf both walking and riding in one seven. It has been confirmed that the seven in which he rode during his Tawaf on the day of sacrifice."
[Machine] The messenger of Allah ﷺ commanded his companions to perform and fulfill the migration, and he spent the night with his wives on his riding camel, taking turns to hold the reins. I think he said he kissed the corner of the cloak. The Sheikh narrated that he rode between Safa and Marwa during Sa'y (the ritual of running between the two hills), and Allah knows best what he intended with his Sa'y after completing the first Tawaf (circumambulation around the Kaaba). As for after completing the Sa'y of I'tifadah (another type of Sa'y during Hajj), it is not preserved that he performed Sa'y between the two hills, and Allah knows best.
[Machine] I saw the Messenger of Allah ﷺ walking between Safa and Marwa on a camel, neither hitting nor urging it on, and he kept saying "There is no deity but Allah, alone. He has no partner. To Him belongs the kingdom and to Him is the praise. He is able to do all things." A group of people narrated this from Aiman, and they added in the narration: "He used to throw the pebbles at the Jamrah during the Day of Sacrifice." It is possible that both narrations are authentic.
“When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ saw that things had settled down, in the year of the Conquest (of Makkah), he performed Tawaf on his camel, touching the corner with a staff in his hand. Then he entered the House and found a dove made of aloeswood. He broke it, then he stood at the door of the Ka’bah and threw it out, and I was watching him.” (Using translation from Ibn Mājah 2947)
Umm Salamah said I complained to the Apostle of Allaah ﷺ that I was ill. He said “Perform the circumambulation riding behind the people”. She said “I performed circumambulation and the Apostle of Allaah ﷺ was praying towards the side of the House(the Ka’bah) and reciting “by al Tur and a Book inscribed”.” (Using translation from Abū Dāʾūd 1882)
12.174 [Machine] What does the pilgrim do after Safa and Marwa?
[Machine] We entered upon Jabir ibn Abdullah, and he mentioned the hadith regarding the Hajj of the Prophet ﷺ . He said, "When I reached the final circumambulation at al-Marwah, I wished that I had deferred some of my affairs so that I could have slaughtered the sacrificial animal and performed 'Umrah (the lesser pilgrimage). So whoever among you does not have a sacrificial animal with him, let him enter into the state of ritual consecration for 'Umrah and complete it." All the people entered into the state of ritual consecration for 'Umrah and completed it, except the Prophet ﷺ and those who had sacrificial animals with them.
[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ set off and reached Makkah. He mentioned the hadith and ordered his companions to perform tawaf around the Kaaba, as well as between Safa and Marwa. Then they were to shave their heads and end the state of ihram, except for those who did not have a sacrificial animal with them. And whoever had his wife with him, she was permissible for him, along with perfume and clothing.
[Machine] He said in its text that the Prophet ﷺ came to Mecca and ordered his companions to perform Tawaf around the Kaaba and between Safa and Marwa, then they should perform Ihram and shave their heads or trim their hair.
[Machine] We were with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ when he performed Umrah. We performed Tawaf with him, prayed with him, and walked between Safa and Marwa with him. We used to protect him from the people of Mecca, ensuring that nothing would harm him.
[Machine] I heard Abdullah bin abi Awfa say, "We performed Umrah with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, so he walked around the Kaaba seven times and prayed two units of prayer near the Station of Ibrahim. Then he came to Safa and Marwa and performed Saa'i (walking between Safa and Marwa) seven times. Then he shaved his head."
[Machine] About the Messenger of Allah ﷺ , they narrated, using a pinch on al-Marwah, as being mentioned in Sahih from the hadith of Ibn Jurayj, about this meaning, there is no mention of Umrah.
[Machine] About the Messenger of Allah ﷺ during his Umrah, he said on Marwah with a clasp, and likewise said Muhammad ibn Saad al-Awfyy from Rauh ibn Ubada.
[Machine] That Ibn Umar used to sacrifice in Makkah at Al-Mawrah and sacrifice in Mina at Al-Manharr.
12.175 [Machine] Choosing the solution for the reduction
[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "O Allah, have mercy on those who have their heads shaved." They said, "And also on those who have their hair shortened, O Messenger of Allah?" He said, "And also on those who have their hair shortened."
[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ shaved his head and some of his companions also shaved their heads, while others trimmed their hair. Ibn Umar reported that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "May Allah have mercy on those who shave once or twice, and may He have mercy on those who trim their hair."
[Machine] That the Messenger of Allah ﷺ supplicated for those who shave their heads three times, and for those who trim their hair once.
[Machine] I heard Ibn Umar saying to the barber, "Reach the bone."
12.176 [Machine] The beginning with the right side
Anas b. Malik (Allah be pleased wish him) reported that Messenger of Allah ﷺ came to Mina; he went to the Jamra and threw pebbles at it, after which he went to his lodging in Mina, and sacrificed the animal. He then called for a barber and, turning his right side to him, let him shave him; after which he tiimed his left side. He then gave (these hair) to the people. (Using translation from Muslim 1305a)
[Machine] Abu al-Abbas al-Asamm reported that al-Rabi' informed al-Shafi'i, who informed Sulayman, who reported from 'Amr ibn Dinar, who said: A barber told me that he trimmed the hair of Ibn 'Abbas, so he said: Start with the right side.

[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "There is no shaving for women, rather what is prescribed for women is shortening." 9405 Abu Ali al-Rawdhbari informed us that Abu Bakr Muhammad ibn Bakr informed us that Abu Dawud informed us that Muhammad ibn al-Husayn ibn al-Hasan al-'Ataki informed us that Muhammad ibn Bakr informed us that Ibn Jurayj said, "I was informed by Safiyyah bint Shaybah ibn Uthman, and she mentioned him."
