We were in the company of Messenger of Allah ﷺ and we assumed the state of Ihram of Hajj and arrived at Mecca on the fourth of Dhul-Hijja. The Prophet ﷺ ordered us to perform the Tawaf around the Kaʿba and (Saʿi) between As-Safa and Al-Marwa and use our lhram just for ʿUmra, and finish the state of Ihram unless we had our Hadi with us. None of us had the Hadi with him except the Prophet ﷺ and Talha. ʿAli came from Yemen and brought the Hadi with him. ʿAli said, 'I had assumed the state of Ihram with the same intention as that with which Messenger of Allah ﷺ had assumed it. The people said, "How can we proceed to Mina and our male organs are dribbling?" Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "If I had formerly known what I came to know latterly, I would not have brought the Hadi, and had there been no Hadi with me, I would have finished my Ihram." Suraqa (bin Malik) met the Prophet ﷺ while he was throwing pebbles at the Jamrat-Al-ʿAqaba, and asked, "O Messenger of Allah ﷺ! Is this (permitted) for us only?" The Prophet ﷺ replied. "No, it is forever" ʿAisha had arrived at Mecca while she was menstruating, therefore the Prophet ﷺ ordered her to perform all the ceremonies of Hajj except the Tawaf around the Kaʿba, and not to perform her prayers unless and until she became clean . When they encamped at Al-Batha, ʿAisha said, "O Messenger of Allah ﷺ! You are proceeding after performing both Hajj and ʿUmra while I am proceeding with Hajj only?" So the Prophet ﷺ ordered ʿAbdur-Rahman bin Abu Bakr As-Siddiq to go with her to at-Tanʿim, and so she performed the ʿUmra in Dhul-Hijja after the days of the Hajj. The Prophet ﷺ ordered his companions to perform the ʿUmra with the lhram which they had assumed, and after finishing Tawaf (of Kaʿba, Safa and Marwa) to cut short their hair, and to finish their lhram except those who had Hadi with them. They (the people) said, "How can we proceed to Mina (for Hajj) after having sexual relations with our wives?" When that news reached the Prophet ﷺ he said, "If I had formerly known what I came to know lately, I would not have brought the Hadi with me. Had there been no Hadi with me, I would have finished the state of lhram." ʿAisha got her menses, so she performed all the ceremonies of Hajj except Tawaf of the Kaʿba, and when she got clean (from her menses), she performed Tawaf of the Kaʿba. She said, "O Messenger of Allah ﷺ! (All of you) are returning with the Hajj and ʿUmra, but I am returning after performing Hajj only." So the Prophet ﷺ ordered ʿAbdur-Rahman bin Abu Bakr to accompany her to Tanʿim and thus she performed the ʿUmra after the Hajj.

Suraqa bin Malik bin Ju'sham met the Prophet ﷺ at Al-ʿAqaba (Jamrat-ul 'Aqaba) while the latter was stoning it and said, "O Messenger of Allah ﷺ! Is this permissible only for you?" The Prophet replied, "No, it is for ever (i.e. it is permissible for all Muslims to perform ʿUmra before Hajj."

The Prophet (along with his companions) reached Mecca in the morning of the fourth of Dhul-Hijja assuming Ihram for Hajj only. So when we arrived at Mecca, the Prophet ﷺ ordered us to change our intentions of the Ihram for ʿUmra and that we could finish our Ihram after performing the ʿUmra and could go to our wives (for sexual intercourse). The people began talking about that. Jabir said surprisingly, "Shall we go to Mina while semen is dribbling from our male organs?" Jabir moved his hand while saying so. When this news reached the Prophet ﷺ he delivered a sermon and said, "I have been informed that some peoples were saying so and so; By Allah I fear Allah more than you do, and am more obedient to Him than you. If I had known what I know now, I would not have brought the Hadi (sacrifice) with me and had the Hadi not been with me, I would have finished the Ihram." At that Suraqa bin Malik stood up and asked "O Messenger of Allah ﷺ! Is this permission for us only or is it forever?" The Prophet ﷺ replied, "It is forever." In the meantime ʿAli bin Abu Talib came from Yemen and was saying Labbaik for what the Prophet ﷺ has intended. (According to another man, ʿAli was saying Labbaik for Hajj similar to Messenger of Allah ﷺ's). The Prophet ﷺ told him to keep on the Ihram and let him share the Hadi with him.

I heard Jabir bin ʿAbdullah in a gathering saying, "We, the companions of Messenger of Allah ﷺ assumed the state of Ihram to perform only Hajj without ʿUmra." Jabir added, "The Prophet ﷺ arrived (at Mecca) on the fourth of Dhul-Hijja. And when we arrived (in Mecca) the Prophet ﷺ ordered us to finish the state of Ihram, saying, "Finish your lhram and go to your wives (for sexual relation)." Jabir added, "The Prophet did not oblige us (to go to our wives) but he only made that legal for us. Then he heard that we were saying, "When there remains only five days between us and the Day of ʿArafat he orders us to finish our Ihram by sleeping with our wives in which case we will proceed to ʿArafat with our male organs dribbling with semen?' (Jabir pointed out with his hand illustrating what he was saying). Messenger of Allah ﷺ stood up and said, 'You (People) know that I am the most Allah-fearing, the most truthful and the best doer of good deeds (pious) from among you. If I had not brought the Hadi with me, I would have finished my Ihram as you will do, so finish your Ihram. If I had formerly known what I came to know lately, I would not have brought the Hadi with me.' So we finished our Ihram and listened to the Prophet ﷺ and obeyed him." (See Hadith No. 713, Vol. 2)

We went with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ with no other aim but that of Hajj till we came (to the place known as) Sarif; and there I entered in the state of menses. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ came to me while I was weeping. He said: What makes you weep? I said: Would that I had not come (for Pilgrimage) this year. He (the Holy Prophet) said: What has happened to you? You have perhaps entered the period of menses. I said: Yes. He said: This is what has been ordained for the daughters of Adam. Do what a pilgrim does except that you should not circumambulate the House, till you are purified (of the menses). She ('A'isha) said: When I came to Mecca, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to his companions: Make this (Ihram) the Ihram for 'Umra. So the people put off Ihram except those who had sacrificial animals with them. She ('A'isha) said: The Apostle of Allah ﷺ had the sacrificial animal with him, and so had Abu Bakr, 'Umar and other persons of means. They (those who had put off Ihram again) put on Ihram (for Hajj) when they marched (towards Mina), and it was the 8th of Dhu'l-Hijja. She ('A'isha) said: When it was the day of sacrifice (10th of Dhu'l-Hijja), I was purified, and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ commanded me and I did the circumambulation of Ifada. She said that the flesh of cow was sent to us. I said: What is it? They said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ has offered a cow as sacrifice on behalf of his wives. When it was the night at Hasba, I said: Messenger of Allah, people are coming back from Hajj and Umra, where as I am coming back from Hajj (alone). She (A'isha) reported: He (the Holy Prophet) commanded" Abd al-Rahman b. Abu Bakr to mount me upon his camel behind him. She ('A'isha) said: I was very young and I well remember that I dozed off and my face touched the hind part of the haudaj (camel litter) till we came to Tan'im, and entered into the state of Ihram in lieu of Umra (which I for the time being abandoned) and which the people had performed.

خَرَجْنَا مَعَ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ لاَ نَذْكُرُ إِلاَّ الْحَجَّ حَتَّى جِئْنَا سَرِفَ فَطَمِثْتُ فَدَخَلَ عَلَىَّ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ وَأَنَا أَبْكِي فَقَالَ مَا يُبْكِيكِ فَقُلْتُ وَاللَّهِ لَوَدِدْتُ أَنِّي لَمْ أَكُنْ خَرَجْتُ الْعَامَ قَالَ مَا لَكِ لَعَلَّكِ نَفِسْتِ قُلْتُ نَعَمْ قَالَ هَذَا شَىْءٌ كَتَبَهُ اللَّهُ عَلَى بَنَاتِ آدَمَ افْعَلِي مَا يَفْعَلُ الْحَاجُّ غَيْرَ أَنْ لاَ تَطُوفِي بِالْبَيْتِ حَتَّى تَطْهُرِي قَالَتْ فَلَمَّا قَدِمْتُ مَكَّةَ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ لأَصْحَابِهِ اجْعَلُوهَا عُمْرَةً فَأَحَلَّ النَّاسُ إِلاَّ مَنْ كَانَ مَعَهُ الْهَدْىُ قَالَتْ فَكَانَ الْهَدْىُ مَعَ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ وَأَبِي بَكْرٍ وَعُمَرَ وَذَوِي الْيَسَارَةِ ثُمَّ أَهَلُّوا حِينَ رَاحُوا قَالَتْ فَلَمَّا كَانَ يَوْمُ النَّحْرِ طَهَرْتُ فَأَمَرَنِي رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ فَأَفَضْتُ قَالَتْ فَأُتِينَا بِلَحْمِ بَقَرٍ فَقُلْتُ مَا هَذَا فَقَالُوا أَهْدَى رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ عَنْ نِسَائِهِ الْبَقَرَ فَلَمَّا كَانَتْ لَيْلَةُ الْحَصْبَةِ قُلْتُ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ يَرْجِعُ النَّاسُ بِحَجَّةٍ وَعُمْرَةٍ وَأَرْجِعُ بِحَجَّةٍ قَالَتْ فَأَمَرَ عَبْدَ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنَ أَبِي بَكْرٍ فَأَرْدَفَنِي عَلَى جَمَلِهِ قَالَتْ فَإِنِّي لأَذْكُرُ وَأَنَا جَارِيَةٌ حَدِيثَةُ السِّنِّ أَنْعُسُ فَتُصِيبُ وَجْهِي مُؤْخِرَةُ الرَّحْلِ حَتَّى جِئْنَا إِلَى التَّنْعِيمِ فَأَهْلَلْتُ مِنْهَا بِعُمْرَةٍ جَزَاءً بِعُمْرَةِ النَّاسِ الَّتِي اعْتَمَرُوا

We, in the state of lhram, came with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ for Hajj Mufrad (with the aim of Hajj only), and 'A'isha set out for Umra, and when we reached Sarif, she (Hadrat A'isha) entered in the state of monthly period; we proceeded on till we reached (Mecca) and circumambulated the Ka'ba and ran between (al-Safa) and al-Marwa; and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ commanded that one who amongst us had no sacrificial animal with him should put off Ihram. We said: What does this "putting off" imply? He said: Getting out completely from the state of lhram, (so we put off Ihram), and we turned to our wives and applied perfume and put on our clothes. and we were at a four night's distance from 'Arafa. And we again put on Ihram on the day of Tarwiya (8th of Dhu'l-Hijja). The Messenger of Allah ﷺ came to 'A'isha (Allah be pleased with her) and found her weeping, and said: What is the matter with you? She said: The matter is that I have entered in the monthly period, and the people had put off lhram, but I did not and I did not circumambulate the House, and the people are going for Hajj now (but I can't go), whereupon he said: It is the matter which Allah has ordained for the daughters of Adam, so now take a bath and put on Ihram for Hajj. She ('A'isha) did accordingly, and stayed at the places of staying till the monthly period was over. She then circumambulated the House, and (ran between) al-Safa and al-Marwa. He (the Holy Prophet) then said: Now both your Hajj and 'Umra are complete, whereupon she said: I feel in my mind that I did not circumambulate the House till I performed Hajj (I missed the circumambulation of 'Umra). Thereupon he (Allah's Apostle) said: 'Abd al-Rahman, take her to Tan'im (so as to enable her) to perform Umra (separately), and it was the night at Hasba.

مسلم:١٢١٣أحَدَّثَنَا قُتَيْبَةُ بْنُ سَعِيدٍ وَمُحَمَّدُ بْنُ رُمْحٍ جَمِيعًا عَنِ اللَّيْثِ بْنِ سَعْدٍ قَالَ قُتَيْبَةُ حَدَّثَنَا لَيْثٌ عَنْ أَبِي الزُّبَيْرِ عَنْ جَابِرٍ ؓ

أَنَّهُ قَالَ أَقْبَلْنَا مُهِلِّينَ مَعَ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ بِحَجٍّ مُفْرَدٍ وَأَقْبَلَتْ عَائِشَةُ ؓ بِعُمْرَةٍ حَتَّى إِذَا كُنَّا بِسَرِفَ عَرَكَتْ حَتَّى إِذَا قَدِمْنَا طُفْنَا بِالْكَعْبَةِ وَالصَّفَا وَالْمَرْوَةِ فَأَمَرَنَا رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ أَنْ يَحِلَّ مِنَّا مَنْ لَمْ يَكُنْ مَعَهُ هَدْىٌ قَالَ فَقُلْنَا حِلُّ مَاذَا قَالَ الْحِلُّ كُلُّهُ فَوَاقَعْنَا النِّسَاءَ وَتَطَيَّبْنَا بِالطِّيبِ وَلَبِسْنَا ثِيَابَنَا وَلَيْسَ بَيْنَنَا وَبَيْنَ عَرَفَةَ إِلاَّ أَرْبَعُ لَيَالٍ ثُمَّ أَهْلَلْنَا يَوْمَ التَّرْوِيَةِ ثُمَّ دَخَلَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ عَلَى عَائِشَةَ ؓ فَوَجَدَهَا تَبْكِي فَقَالَ مَا شَانُكِ قَالَتْ شَانِي أَنِّي قَدْ حِضْتُ وَقَدْ حَلَّ النَّاسُ وَلَمْ أَحْلِلْ وَلَمْ أَطُفْ بِالْبَيْتِ وَالنَّاسُ يَذْهَبُونَ إِلَى الْحَجِّ الآنَ فَقَالَ إِنَّ هَذَا أَمْرٌ كَتَبَهُ اللَّهُ عَلَى بَنَاتِ آدَمَ فَاغْتَسِلِي ثُمَّ أَهِلِّي بِالْحَجِّ فَفَعَلَتْ وَوَقَفَتِ الْمَوَاقِفَ حَتَّى إِذَا طَهَرَتْ طَافَتْ بِالْكَعْبَةِ وَالصَّفَا وَالْمَرْوَةِ ثُمَّ قَالَ قَدْ حَلَلْتِ مِنْ حَجِّكِ وَعُمْرَتِكِ جَمِيعًا فَقَالَتْ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ إِنِّي أَجِدُ فِي نَفْسِي أَنِّي لَمْ أَطُفْ بِالْبَيْتِ حَتَّى حَجَجْتُ قَالَ فَاذْهَبْ بِهَا يَا عَبْدَ الرَّحْمَنِ فَأَعْمِرْهَا مِنَ التَّنْعِيمِ وَذَلِكَ لَيْلَةَ الْحَصْبَةِ

I, along with some people, heard Jabir b. 'Abdullah saying: We the Companions of Muhammad ﷺ put on Ihram for Hajj only. Ata' further said that Jabir stated: Allah's Apostle ﷺ came on the 4th of Dhu'l-Hijja and he commanded us to put off Ihram. 'Ata'said that he (Allah's Apostle) commanded them to put off Ihram and to go to their wives (for intercourse). 'Ata' said: It was not obligatory for them, but (intercourse) with them had become permissible. We said: When only five days had been left to reach 'Arafa, he (the Holy Prophet) commanded us to have intercourse with our wives. And we reached 'Arafa in a state as if we had just had intercourse (with them). He ('Ata') said: Jabir pointed with his hand and I (perceive) as if I am seeing his hand as it moved. In the (meantime) the Messenger of Allah ﷺ stood amongst us and said: You are well aware that I am the most God-fearing, most truthful and most pious amongst you. And if there were not sacrificial animals with me, I would also have put off Ihram as you have put off. And if I were to know this matter of mine what I have come to know later on, I would not have brought sacrificial animals with me. So they (the Companions) put off Ihram and we also put it off and listened to (the Holy Prophet) and obeyed (his command). Jabir said: 'Ali came with the revenue of the taxes (from Yemen). He (the Holy Prophet) said: For what (purpose) have you entered into the state of Ihram (whether you entered into the state purely for Hajj and, Umra jointly or Hajj and Umra separately)? He said: For the purpose for which the Messenger of Allah ﷺ had entered. (The Prophet had entered as a Qiran, i.e. Ihram covering both Umra and Hajj simultaneously.) Thereupon Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: Offer a sacrifice of animal, and retain Ihram. And 'Ali brought a sacrificial animal for him (for the Holy Prophet). Suraqa b. Malik b. Ju'shum said: Messenger of Allah, is it (this concession putting off Ihram of Hajj or Umra) meant for this year or is it forever? He said: It is forever.

أَهْلَلْنَا أَصْحَابَ مُحَمَّدٍ ﷺ بِالْحَجِّ خَالِصًا وَحْدَهُ قَالَ عَطَاءٌ قَالَ جَابِرٌ فَقَدِمَ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ صُبْحَ رَابِعَةٍ مَضَتْ مِنْ ذِي الْحِجَّةِ فَأَمَرَنَا أَنْ نَحِلَّ قَالَ عَطَاءٌ قَالَ حِلُّوا وَأَصِيبُوا النِّسَاءَ قَالَ عَطَاءٌ وَلَمْ يَعْزِمْ عَلَيْهِمْ وَلَكِنْ أَحَلَّهُنَّ لَهُمْ فَقُلْنَا لَمَّا لَمْ يَكُنْ بَيْنَنَا وَبَيْنَ عَرَفَةَ إِلاَّ خَمْسٌ أَمَرَنَا أَنْ نُفْضِيَ إِلَى نِسَائِنَا فَنَأْتِيَ عَرَفَةَ تَقْطُرُ مَذَاكِيرُنَا الْمَنِيَّ قَالَ يَقُولُ جَابِرٌ بِيَدِهِ كَأَنِّي أَنْظُرُ إِلَى قَوْلِهِ بِيَدِهِ يُحَرِّكُهَا قَالَ فَقَامَ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ فِينَا فَقَالَ قَدْ عَلِمْتُمْ أَنِّي أَتْقَاكُمْ لِلَّهِ وَأَصْدَقُكُمْ وَأَبَرُّكُمْ وَلَوْلاَ هَدْيِي لَحَلَلْتُ كَمَا تَحِلُّونَ وَلَوِ اسْتَقْبَلْتُ مِنْ أَمْرِي مَا اسْتَدْبَرْتُ لَمْ أَسُقِ الْهَدْىَ فَحِلُّوا فَحَلَلْنَا وَسَمِعْنَا وَأَطَعْنَا قَالَ عَطَاءٌ قَالَ جَابِرٌ فَقَدِمَ عَلِيٌّ مِنْ سِعَايَتِهِ فَقَالَ بِمَ أَهْلَلْتَ قَالَ بِمَا أَهَلَّ بِهِ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ فَقَالَ لَهُ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ فَأَهْدِ وَامْكُثْ حَرَامًا قَالَ وَأَهْدَى لَهُ عَلِيٌّ هَدْيًا فَقَالَ سُرَاقَةُ بْنُ مَالِكِ بْنِ جُعْشُمٍ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ أَلِعَامِنَا هَذَا أَمْ لأَبَدٍ فَقَالَ لأَبَدٍ

Jabir said “We went out along with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ raising our voices in talbiyah for Hakk alone(Ifrad) while A’ishah raised her voice in talbiyah for an ‘Umrah. When she reached Sarif, she menstruated. When we came to (Makkah) we circumambulated the Ka’bah and ran between al Safa’ and al Marwah. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ then commanded us that those who had not brought sacrificial animals withthem should put off their ihram (after ‘Umrah). We asked “Which acts are lawful(and which not)? He replied All acts are lawful (that are permissible usually). We had therefore intercourse with our wives, used perfumes, put on our clothes. There remained only four days to perform Hajj at ‘Arafah. We then raised our voice in talbiyah (wearing Ihram for Hajj) on the eighth of Dhu al Hijjah. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ entered upon A’ishah and found her weeping. He said What is the matter with you? My problem is that I have menstruated, while the people have put on their ihram but I have not done so, nor did I go round the House(the Ka’bah). Now the people are proceeding for Hajj. He said This is a thing destined by Allah to the daughters of Adam. Take a bath, then raise your voice in talbiyah for Hajj(i.e, wear ihram for Hajj). She took a abtah and performed all the rites of the Hajj(lit. she stayed at all those places where the pilgrims stay). When she was purified, she circumambulated the House (the Ka’bah), and ran between al Safa’ and al Marwah. He (the Prophet) said “Now you have performed both your Hajj and your ‘Umrah. She said Messenger of Allah, I have some misgiving in my mind that I did not go round the Ka’bah when I performed Hajj (in the beginning). He said ‘Abd al Rahman (her brother), take her and have her perform ‘Umrah from Al Tan’im. This happened on the night of Al Hasbah(i.e., the fourteenth of Dhu Al Hijjah).

أَقْبَلْنَا مُهِلِّينَ مَعَ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ بِالْحَجِّ مُفْرَدًا وَأَقْبَلَتْ عَائِشَةُ مُهِلَّةً بِعُمْرَةٍ حَتَّى إِذَا كَانَتْ بِسَرِفَ عَرَكَتْ حَتَّى إِذَا قَدِمْنَا طُفْنَا بِالْكَعْبَةِ وَبِالصَّفَا وَالْمَرْوَةِ فَأَمَرَنَا رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ أَنْ يُحِلَّ مِنَّا مَنْ لَمْ يَكُنْ مَعَهُ هَدْىٌ قَالَ فَقُلْنَا حِلُّ مَاذَا فَقَالَ الْحِلُّ كُلُّهُ فَوَاقَعْنَا النِّسَاءَ وَتَطَيَّبْنَا بِالطِّيبِ وَلَبِسْنَا ثِيَابَنَا وَلَيْسَ بَيْنَنَا وَبَيْنَ عَرَفَةَ إِلاَّ أَرْبَعُ لَيَالٍ ثُمَّ أَهْلَلْنَا يَوْمَ التَّرْوِيَةِ ثُمَّ دَخَلَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ عَلَى عَائِشَةَ فَوَجَدَهَا تَبْكِي فَقَالَ مَا شَأْنُكِ قَالَتْ شَأْنِي أَنِّي قَدْ حِضْتُ وَقَدْ حَلَّ النَّاسُ وَلَمْ أَحْلِلْ وَلَمْ أَطُفْ بِالْبَيْتِ وَالنَّاسُ يَذْهَبُونَ إِلَى الْحَجِّ الآنَ فَقَالَ إِنَّ هَذَا أَمْرٌ كَتَبَهُ اللَّهُ عَلَى بَنَاتِ آدَمَ فَاغْتَسِلِي ثُمَّ أَهِلِّي بِالْحَجِّ فَفَعَلَتْ وَوَقَفَتِ الْمَوَاقِفَ حَتَّى إِذَا طَهُرَتْ طَافَتْ بِالْبَيْتِ وَبِالصَّفَا وَالْمَرْوَةِ ثُمَّ قَالَ قَدْ حَلَلْتِ مِنْ حَجِّكِ وَعُمْرَتِكِ جَمِيعًا قَالَتْ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ إِنِّي أَجِدُ فِي نَفْسِي أَنِّي لَمْ أَطُفْ بِالْبَيْتِ حِينَ حَجَجْتُ قَالَ فَاذْهَبْ بِهَا يَا عَبْدَ الرَّحْمَنِ فَأَعْمِرْهَا مِنَ التَّنْعِيمِ وَذَلِكَ لَيْلَةَ الْحَصْبَةِ

Jabir bin Abdullah said The Apostle of Allaah ﷺ and his companions raised their voices in talbiyah for Hajj. No one of them had brought the sacrificial animals with them except the Prophet ﷺ and Talhah. Ali (may Allaah be pleased with him) had returned from Yemen and had brought sacrificial animals with him. He said I raised my voice in talbiyah for which the Apostle of Allaah ﷺ raised his voice. The Prophet ﷺ commanded his companions to change it into ‘Umrah and clip their hair after running (between Al Safa’ and Al Marwah), and then take off their ihram except those who brought the sacrificial animals with them. They remarked should we go to Mina with our penises dripping with prostatic fluid? These remarks reached the Apostle of Allaah ﷺ. Thereupon he said “had I known before hand about my affair what I have come to know later, I would not have brought sacrificial animals. Had I not brought sacrificial animals with me, I would have put off my ihram. “

"We came in Ihram with the Messenger of Allah for Hajj alone (Mufrad), and 'Aishah came in Ihram for 'Umrah. Then, whe we were in Sarif her menses started. When we came, we circumambulated the Ka'bah and (performed Sa'i) between As-safa and Al-Marwah. Then, the Messenger of Allah commanded those of us who did not have a Hadi to exit Ihram. We said: 'Exit Ihram to what degree?' He said" 'Completely.' So we had intercourse with out, wives put on perfume, and wore only four nights away from 'Arafat. The, we entered Ihram on the day of At-Tarwiyah. The Messenger of Allah entered upon 'Aishah and found here weeping. He said: 'What is the matter with you?' She said: 'I have got my menses and the people exited Ihram, but I did not exit Ihram or did I circumambulate the House, and the people are going for Hajj now.' He said: 'This is something that Allah ahs decreed for the daughters of Adam. Perform Ghusl, then begin the Talbiyah for Hajj.' So she did that and did all the rituals. Then, when she became pure, she circumambulated the House and (Performed Sa'i) between As-Safa and Al-Marwah. Then, he said: 'You have exited Ihram from your Hajj and your 'Umrah at the same time." She said: 'O Messenger of Allah, I feel upset because I only circumambulated the House during my Hajj.' He said: 'Take here, O 'Abdullah, to perform 'Umrah from At-Tan'im.' And that was on the night of Al-Hasbah (the twelfth night of Dhul-Hijjah)."

"We, the Companions of the Prophet, entered Ihram for Hajj only, and nothing else. We came to Makkah on the morning of the fourth of Dhul-Hajjah, and the Prophet commanded us: "Exit Ihram and make it Umrah. He heard that we were saying: 'when there are only five days between us and 'Arafat he commands us to exit Ihram and we will go out to Mina with our male members dripping with semen (because of recent intimacy with our wives)?' the Prophet stood up and addressed us, saying: 'I have heard what you said. I am the most righteous and the most pious of you, and were it not for the Hadi I would have exited Ihram. If I had known what I know now, I would not have from Yemen and he said: 'for what did you enter Ihram?' He said: 'For that for which the Messenger of Allah entered Ihram.' Suraq bin Malik bin Jushum said: 'O Messenger of Allah, do you think that this Umrah of ours is for this year only or for all time?' He said: 'It is for all time."

“We began our Talbiyah for Hajj only with Allah’s Messenger ﷺ, and we did not mix it with ‘Umrah. We arrived in Makkah when four nights of Dhul-Hijjah had passed, and when we had performed Tawaf around the Ka’bah and Sa’y between Safa and Marwah, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ commanded us to make it ‘Umrah, and to come out of Ihram and have relations with our wives. We said: ‘There are only five (days) until ‘Arafah. Will we g out to it with our male organs dripping with semen?’ The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: ‘I am the most righteous and truthful among you, and were it not for the sacrificial animal, I would have exited Ihram.’ Suraqah bin Malik said: ‘Is this Tamattu’ for this year only or forever?’ He said: ‘No, it is forever and ever.’”

The Prophet ﷺ and his companions assumed Ihram for Hajj and none except the Prophet ﷺ and Talha had the Hadi with them. ʿAli had come from Yemen and he had the Hadi with him. He (ʿAli) said, "I have assumed Ihram with an intention like that of Messenger of Allah ﷺ has assumed it." The Prophet ﷺ ordered his companions to intend the Ihram with which they had come for ʿUmra, to perform the Tawaf of the Kaʿba (and between Safa and Marwa), to get their hair cut short and then to finish their Ihram with the exception of those who had the Hadi with them. They asked, "Shall we go to Mina and the private organs of some of us are dribbling (if we finish Ihram and have sexual relations with our wives)?" The Prophet heard that and said, "Had I known what I know now, I would not have brought the Hadi. If I did not have the Hadi with me I would have finished my Ihram." ʿAisha got her menses and performed all the ceremonies (of Hajj) except the Tawaf . So when she became clean from her menses, and she had performed the Tawaf of the Kaʿba, she said, "O Messenger of Allah ﷺ! You (people) are returning with both Hajj and ʿUmra and I am returning only with Hajj!" So, he ordered ʿAbdur Rahman bin Abu Bakr to go with her to at-Tanʿim. Thus she performed ʿUmra after the Hajj in the month of Dhi-l-Hijja. Suraqa bin Malik bin Ju'sham met the Prophet ﷺ at Al-ʿAqaba (Jamrat-ul 'Aqaba) while the latter was stoning it and said, "O Messenger of Allah ﷺ! Is this permissible only for you?" The Prophet replied, "No, it is for ever (i.e. it is permissible for all Muslims to perform ʿUmra before Hajj." (Using translation from Bukhārī 1785)

[AI] We went out with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ as pilgrims, with no intention except for Hajj. When we reached Sarif, Aisha menstruated. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ entered upon her while she was crying and asked, "Why are you crying?" She said, "O Messenger of Allah, I have been harmed!" He said, "Indeed, you are one of the daughters of Adam, and what afflicts them may afflict you." He added, "We have already arrived at the Kaaba in four days or nights of Dhul-Hijjah, then we performed Tawaf around the Kaaba and Sa'i between Safa and Marwa. Then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ commanded us and we performed all the rituals of Hajj except for the prohibited actions. So we discussed among ourselves and said, "We went out as pilgrims with no intention except for Hajj, and we don't intend anything else. Until there was no more than four days or nights between us and Arafat, so we went out to Arafat. Our women were experiencing discharge like that of men. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ was informed of this and he stood up to deliver a sermon, saying, "Indeed, the Umrah is included in the Hajj. If I had known beforehand what I came to know later, I would not have brought the Hadi (sacrificial animal) with me, and if there was no Hadi, I would have assumed Ihram for Umrah." Therefore, whoever does not have a Hadi with him should perform Tahlil (which refers to assuming Ihram for Hajj only by starting the Talbiyah at Meeqat and then remaining in Ihram till the end of Hajj). Suraqa bin Malik bin Ju'shum stood up and asked, "O Messenger of Allah, inform us about those who seem to have been born today, are they considered as if they were born today or forever?" He replied, "No, they are considered as if they were born forever." He then said, "We went to Arafat and then left it. Aisha said to the Messenger of Allah, "I find that I have assumed Ihram without my intention." He said, "You have what they have." She then said, "O Messenger of Allah, I feel something in myself." So he stopped at the highest point of Makkah and commanded her brother Abdullah bin Abu Bakr to cover her until she reached the place of Tan'im. Then she performed the rituals of Umrah and returned to the Prophet ﷺ .

Jabir said “We went out along with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ raising our voices in talbiyah for Hakk alone(Ifrad) while A’ishah raised her voice in talbiyah for an ‘Umrah. When she reached Sarif, she menstruated. When we came to (Makkah) we circumambulated the Ka’bah and ran between al Safa’ and al Marwah. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ then commanded us that those who had not brought sacrificial animals withthem should put off their ihram (after ‘Umrah). We asked “Which acts are lawful(and which not)? He replied All acts are lawful (that are permissible usually). We had therefore intercourse with our wives, used perfumes, put on our clothes. There remained only four days to perform Hajj at ‘Arafah. We then raised our voice in talbiyah (wearing Ihram for Hajj) on the eighth of Dhu al Hijjah. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ entered upon A’ishah and found her weeping. He said What is the matter with you? My problem is that I have menstruated, while the people have put on their ihram but I have not done so, nor did I go round the House(the Ka’bah). Now the people are proceeding for Hajj. He said This is a thing destined by Allah to the daughters of Adam. Take a bath, then raise your voice in talbiyah for Hajj(i.e, wear ihram for Hajj). She took a abtah and performed all the rites of the Hajj(lit. she stayed at all those places where the pilgrims stay). When she was purified, she circumambulated the House (the Ka’bah), and ran between al Safa’ and al Marwah. He (the Prophet) said “Now you have performed both your Hajj and your ‘Umrah. She said Messenger of Allah, I have some misgiving in my mind that I did not go round the Ka’bah when I performed Hajj (in the beginning). He said ‘Abd al Rahman (her brother), take her and have her perform ‘Umrah from Al Tan’im. This happened on the night of Al Hasbah(i.e., the fourteenth of Dhu Al Hijjah). She began looking at my companion's cloak, finding it better than mine, and looking at me, finding me more attractive than him. She said, 'A cloak in exchange for a cloak, and she chose me, so I married her with one cloak. I spent the night with her, then when morning came, I went to the mosque. I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ delivering a sermon from the pulpit, in which he said, 'Whoever among you marries a woman for a specific time, let him give her what he has promised her, and he should not take anything back from what he has given her, and let him part ways with her. For indeed, Allah, the Most High, has made it forbidden upon you until the Day of Resurrection."

خَرَجْنَا مَعَ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ مِنَ الْمَدِينَةِ فِي حَجَّةِ الْوَدَاعِ حَتَّى إِذَا كُنَّا بِعُسْفَانَ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ إِنَّ الْعُمْرَةَ قَدْ دَخَلَتْ فِي الْحَجِّ فَقَالَ لَهُ سُرَاقَةُ بْنُ مَالِكٍ أَوْ مَالِكُ بْنُ سُرَاقَةَ شَكَّ عَبْدُ الْعَزِيزِ أَيْ رَسُولَ اللهِ عَلِّمْنَا تَعْلِيمَ قَوْمٍ كَأَنَّمَا وُلِدُوا الْيَوْمَ عُمْرَتُنَا هَذِهِ لِعَامِنَا هَذَا أَمْ لِأَبَدِ؟ قَالَ بَلْ لِأَبَدِ فَلَمَّا قَدِمْنَا مَكَّةَ طُفْنَا بِالْبَيْتِ وَبَيْنَ الصَّفَا وَالْمَرْوَةِ ثُمَّ أَمَرَنَا بِمُتْعَةِ النِّسَاءِ فَرَجَعْنَا إِلَيْهِ فَقُلْنَا يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ إِنَّهُنَّ قَدْ أَبَيْنَ إِلَّا إِلَى أَجَلٍ مُسَمًّى قَالَ فَافْعَلُوا قَالَ فَخَرَجْتُ أَنَا وَصَاحِبٌ لِي عَلَيَّ بُرْدٌ وَعَلَيْهِ بُرْدٌ فَدَخَلْنَا عَلَى امْرَأَةٍ فَعَرَضْنَا عَلَيْهَا أَنْفُسَنَا فَجَعَلَتْ تَنْظُرُ إِلَى بُرْدِ صَاحِبِي فَتَرَاهُ أَجْوَدَ مِنْ بُرْدِي وَتَنْظُرُ إِلَيَّ فَتَرَانِي أَشَبَّ مِنْهُ فَقَالَتْ بُرْدٌ مَكَانَ بُرْدٍ وَاخْتَارَتْنِي فَتَزَوَّجْتُهَا عَشْرًا بِبُرْدِي فَبِتُّ مَعَهَا تِلْكَ اللَّيْلَةَ فَلَمَّا أَصْبَحْتُ غَدَوْتُ إِلَى الْمَسْجِدِ فَسَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ وَهُوَ عَلَى الْمِنْبَرِ يَخْطُبُ يَقُولُ مَنْ كَانَ مِنْكُمْ تَزَوَّجَ امْرَأَةً إِلَى أَجَلٍ فَلْيُعْطِهَا مَا سَمَّى لَهَا وَلَا يَسْتَرْجِعْ مِمَّا أَعْطَاهَا شَيْئًا وَلْيُفَارِقْهَا فَإِنَّ اللهَ تَعَالَى قَدْ حَرَّمَهَا عَلَيْكُمْ إِلَى يَوْمِ الْقِيَامَةِ

Those who did not have sacrificial animals with them completed their rituals, and Safiyyah menstruated, so we completed our rites of Hajj. When it was the night of Hasba, the night of departing from Muzdalifah, Safiyyah said, "O Messenger of Allah, will your companions return with both Hajj and Umrah, and shall I also perform Hajj?" The Messenger of Allah ﷺ replied, "Have you not completed the Tawaf of the nights we arrived?" She said, "No." He said, "Then proceed with your brother to Tan'eem and perform Umrah, and then your appointed place will be so and so." She said, "And I was menstruating." He said, "Either use a pad or shave your head, as you are holding us back. Didn't you perform Tawaf around the Ka'bah on the day of Sacrifice?" She said, "Yes." He said, "Then it's okay, so proceed." She said, "So I met the Messenger of Allah ﷺ while he was wearing a thin garment, ascending towards the people of Makkah, while I was descending upon them, or he was descending upon them while I was ascending."

They said, "This is a cow that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ had sacrificed on behalf of his wives." When it was the night of Hasbah, I said, "O Messenger of Allah, people are returning with the Hajj and 'Umrah, and I am returning with the Hajj only." So the Messenger of Allah ﷺ commanded Abdur-Rahman bin Abu Bakr to accompany me on his camel. She said, "I remember, while I was a young girl, that I would fall asleep and my face would hit the back of the saddle until he brought me to Tan'im. Then I performed 'Umrah as compensation for the previous 'Umrah."

كَانَتْ عَائِشَةُ تَقُولُ خَرَجْنَا مَعَ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ وَلَا نَذْكُرُ إِلَّا الْحَجَّ فَلَمَّا قَدِمْنَا سَرِفَ طَمِثْتُ فَدَخَلَ عَلَيَّ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ وَأَنَا أَبْكِي فَقَالَ مَا يُبْكِيكِ؟ قُلْتُ وَدِدْتُ أَنِّي لَمْ أَخْرُجِ الْعَامَ قَالَ لَعَلَّكِ نَفِسْتِ يَعْنِي حِضْتِ قَالَتْ قُلْتُ نَعَمْ قَالَ إِنَّ هَذَا شَيْءٌ كَتَبَهُ اللهُ عَلَى بَنَاتِ آدَمَ فَافْعَلِي مَا يَفْعَلُ الْحَاجُّ غَيْرَ أَنْ لَا تَطُوفِي بِالْبَيْتِ حَتَّى تَطْهُرِي فَلَمَّا قَدِمْنَا مَكَّةَ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ لِأَصْحَابِهِ اجْعَلُوهَا عُمْرَةً فَحَلَّ النَّاسُ إِلَّا مَنْ كَانَ مَعَهُ هَدْيٌ وَكَانَ الْهَدْيُ مَعَ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ وَأَبِي بَكْرٍ وَعُمَرَ وَذَوِي الْيَسَارَةِ قَالَتْ ثُمَّ رَاحُوا مُهِلِّينَ بِالْحَجِّ فَلَمَّا كَانَ يَوْمُ النَّحْرِ طَهُرْتُ فَأَرْسَلَنِي رَسُولُ اللهِ فَأَفَضْتُ يَعْنِي طُفْتُ قَالَتْ فَأُتِينَا بِلَحْمِ بَقَرٍ فَقُلْتُ مَا هَذَا؟ قَالُوا هَذَا رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ ذَبَحَ عَنْ نِسَائِهِ الْبَقَرَ قَالَتْ فَلَمَّا كَانَتْ لَيْلَةُ الْحَصْبَةِ قُلْتُ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ يَرْجِعُ النَّاسُ بِحَجَّةٍ وَعُمْرَةٍ وَأَرْجِعُ بِحَجَّةٍ فَأَمَرَ عَبْدَ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنَ أَبِي بَكْرٍ فَأَرْدَفَنِي عَلَى جَمَلِهِ قَالَتْ فَإِنِّي لَأَذْكُرُ وَأَنَا جَارِيَةٌ حَدِيثَةُ السِّنِّ أَنِّي أَنْعَسُ فَتَضْرِبُ وَجْهِي مُؤَخِّرَةُ الرَّحْلِ حَتَّى جَاءَ بِيَ إِلَى التَّنْعِيمِ فَأَهْلَلْتُ بِعُمْرَةٍ جَزَاءً بِعُمْرَةِ

[AI] Narrated by Aisha, the wife of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ , she said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ went for Hajj for five nights in the remaining days of Dhul-Qa'dah. People were only talking about Hajj until he ﷺ took along with him the sacrificial animal and a group of people. He commanded the people to perform Umrah except for those who had brought the sacrificial animal. I was menstruating on that day, so he ﷺ came to me while I was crying and he asked, "What's wrong, Aisha? Are you upset?" I replied, "Yes, by Allah! I wish I had not gone out with you in this year's journey." He said, "Don't say that. Verily, you perform all the rituals that a pilgrim does, except for the Tawaf (circumambulation) around the Kaaba." I said, "Well, I still performed my Hajj rites." The Messenger of Allah ﷺ entered Makkah, and everyone who didn't have the sacrificial animal with them performed Umrah. His wives also performed Umrah. On the Day of Sacrifice, I was brought a lot of beef, which was put in my house. I asked, "What is this?" They said, "The Messenger of Allah ﷺ has sacrificed the cow on behalf of his wives." When the night of Maghrib (the evening prayer) came during the Day of At-Tashriq, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ sent me with my brother, Abdur-Rahman bin Abu Bakr, to Mecca, and he instructed me to assume the Ihram (ritual state of pilgrimage) for my Umrah, in the place where I had missed my Umrah previously. Ya'qub also reported this from another place regarding the time of Hajj. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ commanded his wives to perform Umrah, and he commanded the people who didn't have a sacrificial animal to perform Umrah, and he commanded those who had brought a sacrificial animal from among the nobles to remain in their sanctity.

[AI] While we were with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ during the Battle of Tabuk, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ was inside a dome made of adhami (a type of stone). As I passed by, he heard my voice and said, "O Awf bin Malik, come in." So I said, "O Messenger of Allah, shall I bring all of it (food) or just a portion?" He said, "No, bring all of it." So I entered and he said, "O Awf, prepare six (people) before the Hour (Day of Judgment)." So I asked, "What are they, O Messenger of Allah?" He said, "The death of the Messenger of Allah." Awf started to cry and then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Say one by one." I said, "One." Then he said, "The conquest of Bayt al-Maqdis (Jerusalem)." I said, "Two." He said, "A death will occur among my Ummah (followers) like a sheep being slaughtered." I said, "Three." He said, "They will be given the world (wealth) until a man becomes angry with it." I said, "Four." He said, "And a trial in which no one from the Muslims will be spared except that it enters his home." I said, "Five." He said, "And a truce between you and the Banu Asfar (Romans), where they come to you at 80 destinations, every destination being 12,000 (soldiers), but they will deceive you until a woman carries her child and she is asked (about Islam) but she denies it." Then when the Year of Amwas came, they claimed that Awf bin Malik said to Muadh bin Jabal, "The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to me, 'Prepare six people before the Hour.'" So three of them have already occurred and three remain. Muadh said, "This will happen but five of them are sufficient for you. Whoever experiences anything from them and is able to die, then let him die, so that the curse appears on the pulpits and the wealth of Allah is given based on lies and deception, blood is shed unjustly, family ties are severed, and a person wakes up not knowing whether he is rightly guided or astray."

هَذَا حَدِيثٌ صَحِيحٌ عَلَى شَرْطِ الشَّيْخَيْنِ وَلَمْ يُخْرِجَاهُ بِهَذِهِ السِّيَاقَةِعلى شرط البخاري ومسلم

"We, the Companions of the Prophet, entered Ihram for Hajj only, and nothing else. We came to Makkah on the morning of the fourth of Dhul-Hajjah, and the Prophet commanded us: "Exit Ihram and make it Umrah. He heard that we were saying: 'when there are only five days between us and 'Arafat he commands us to exit Ihram and we will go out to Mina with our male members dripping with semen (because of recent intimacy with our wives)?' the Prophet stood up and addressed us, saying: 'I have heard what you said. I am the most righteous and the most pious of you, and were it not for the Hadi I would have exited Ihram. If I had known what I know now, I would not have from Yemen and he said: 'for what did you enter Ihram?' He said: 'For that for which the Messenger of Allah entered Ihram.' Suraq bin Malik bin Jushum said: 'O Messenger of Allah, do you think that this Umrah of ours is for this year only or for all time?' He said: 'It is for all time." أَهْلَلْنَا أَصْحَابَ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ بِالْحَجِّ خَالِصًا لَيْسَ مَعَهُ شَيْءٌ غَيْرُهُ فَقَدِمْنَا مَكَّةَ صُبْحَ رَابِعَةٍ مَضَتْ مِنْ ذِي الْحِجَّةِ فَأَمَرَنَا النَّبِيُّ ﷺ أَنْ نَحِلَّ قَالَ «أَحِلُّوا وَاجْعَلُوهَا عَمْرَةً» فَبَلَغَهُ عَنَّا أَنَا نَقُولُ لَمَّا لَمْ يَكُنْ بَيْنَنَا وَبَيْنَ عَرَفَةَ إِلَّا خَمْسًا أَمَرَنَا أَنْ نَحِلَّ نَرُوحُ إِلَى مِنًى وَمَذَاكِيرُنَا تَقْطُرُ مِنَ الْمَنِيِّ فَقَامَ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ خَطِيبًا فَقَالَ «قَدْ بَلَغَنِي الَّذِي قُلْتُمْ وَإِنِّي لَأَبَرُّكُمْ وَأَتْقَاكُمْ وَلَوْلَا الْهَدْيُ لَحَلَلْتُ وَلَوِ اسْتَقْبَلْتُ مِنْ أَمْرِي مَا اسْتَدْبَرْتُ مَا أَهْدَيْتُ» قَالَ وَقَدِمَ عَلِيٌّ مِنَ الْيَمَنِ فَقَالَ «بِمَ أَهْلَلْتَ؟ قَالَ بِمَا أَهَلَ بِهِ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ قَالَ » فَاهْدِ وَامْكُثْ حَرَامًا كَمَا أَنْتَ « قَالَ وَقَالَ لَهُ سُرَاقَةُ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ عُمْرَتُنَا هَذِهِ لِعَامِنَا أَمْ لِلْأَبَدِ قَالَ فَقَالَ » بَلْ لِلْأَبَدِ «

“We began our Talbiyah for Hajj only with Allah’s Messenger ﷺ, and we did not mix it with ‘Umrah. We arrived in Makkah when four nights of Dhul-Hijjah had passed, and when we had performed Tawaf around the Ka’bah and Sa’y between Safa and Marwah, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ commanded us to make it ‘Umrah, and to come out of Ihram and have relations with our wives. We said: ‘There are only five (days) until ‘Arafah. Will we g out to it with our male organs dripping with semen?’ The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: ‘I am the most righteous and truthful among you, and were it not for the sacrificial animal, I would have exited Ihram.’ Suraqah bin Malik said: ‘Is this Tamattu’ for this year only or forever?’ He said: ‘No, it is forever and ever.’” (Using translation from Ibn Mājah 2980)

أَهْلَلْنَا مَعَ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ بِالْحَجِّ خَالِصًا لَا نَخْلِطُ بِغَيْرِهِ فَقَدِمْنَا مَكَّةَ لِأَرْبَعِ لَيَالٍ خَلَوْنَ مِنْ ذِي الْحِجَّةِ فَلَمَّا طُفْنَا بِالْبَيْتِ وَسَعَيْنَا بَيْنَ الصَّفَا وَالْمَرْوَةِ وَأَمَرَنَا رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ أَنْ نَجْعَلَهَا عَمْرَةً وَأَنْ نَحِلَّ إِلَى النِّسَاءِ فَقُلْنَا بَيْنَنَا لَيْسَ بَيْنَنَا وَبَيْنَ عَرَفَةَ إِلَّا خَمْسٌ فَنَخْرُجُ إِلَيْهَا وَمَذَاكِيرُنَا تَقْطُرُ مَنِيًّا فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ «إِنِّي لَأَبَرُّكُمْ وَأَصْدَقُكُمْ وَلَوْلَا الْهَدْيُ لَأَحْلَلْتُ» فَقَامَ سُرَاقَةُ بْنُ مَالِكٍ فَقَالَ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ أَمْتِعَتُنَا هَذِهِ لِعَامِنَا هَذَا أَمْ لِلْأَبَدِ؟ فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ «بَلْ لِلْأَبَدِ»

[AI] We went out with the Prophet ﷺ, hastening for Hajj. We arrived at Makkah and performed Tawaf around the Kaaba, between Safa and Marwa. Then the Prophet ﷺ addressed us, saying, "Whoever did not bring a sacrificial animal should perform Umrah instead." We asked, "What is the ruling, O Messenger of Allah?" He replied, "The ruling is for everyone." So we removed our garments and put on Ihram, and we perfumed ourselves with perfume. Some people said, "What is this? We are going to 'Arafat and our garments are dripping with semen!" This was then reported to the Prophet ﷺ, who stood among us in a state of anger and said, "I swear by Allah, you all knew that I was the most pious among you. If I had known that you were saying this, I would not have offered the sacrificial animal. So forgive what you have been ordered." Surahqa ibn Malik ibn Ju'shum stood up and said, "O Messenger of Allah, is this Umrah of ours a one-time thing or is it for every year?" The Prophet ﷺ replied, "No, it is for every year."

خَرَجْنَا مَعَ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ مُهِلِّينَ بِالْحَجِّ فَقَدِمْنَا مَكَّةَ فَطُفْنَا بِالْبَيْتِ وَبَيْنَ الصَّفَا وَالْمَرْوَةِ ثُمَّ قَامَ فِينَا النَّبِيُّ ﷺ فَقَالَ «مَنْ لَمْ يَكُنْ مِنْكُمْ سَاقَ هَدْيًا فَلْيَحْلِلْ وَلْيَجْعَلْهَا عَمْرَةً» فَقُلْنَا حِلٌّ مِنْ ذَا يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ؟ قَالَ «الْحِلُّ كُلُّهُ» فَوَاقَعْنَا النِّسَاءَ وَلَبِسْنَا وَتَطَيَّبْنَا بِالطِّيبِ فَقَالَ أُنَاسٌ مَا هَذَا الْأَمْرُ نَأْتِي عَرَفَةَ وَأُيُورُنَا تَقْطُرُ مَنِيًّا؟ فَبَلَغَ ذَلِكَ النَّبِيَّ ﷺ فَقَامَ فِينَا كَالْمُغْضَبِ فَقَالَ «وَاللَّهِ لَقَدْ عَلِمْتُمْ أَنِّي أَتْقَاكُمْ وَلَوْ عَلِمْتُ أَنَّكُمْ تَقُولُونَ هَذَا مَا سُقْتُ الْهَدْيَ فَاسْمَحُوا بِمَا تُؤْمَرُونَ بِهِ» فَقَامَ سُرَاقَةُ بْنُ مَالِكِ بْنِ جُعْشُمٍ فَقَالَ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ عُمْرَتُنَا هَذِهِ الَّتِي أَمَرْتَنَا بِهَا أَلِعَامِنَا هَذَا أَمْ لِلْأَبَدِ؟ فَقَالَ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ «بَلْ لِلْأَبَدِ»

The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Indeed, 'Umrah has entered into the Hajj until the Day of Resurrection." So Suraqah bin Malik said, "O Messenger of Allah, teach us a teaching for a people as if they were born today. Is this 'Umrah of ours for this year only or for all time?" He said, "No, rather for all time." So when we arrived in Mecca, we made Tawaf around the Ka'bah and between Safa and Marwa. Then he ordered us to engage in the pleasure of women, so we returned to him and said, "Indeed, they have unveiled except for a specified term." He said, "So do it." So I and my companion, both wearing cloaks, entered upon a woman and presented ourselves to her. She looked at my companion's cloak and found it better than mine, and she looked at me and found me more handsome than him. She said, "A cloak belongs in its place." And she chose me, so I married her with my cloak. I stayed with her that night, and when morning came, I went to the mosque. And behold, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ was on the pulpit delivering a sermon, and I heard him saying, "Whoever marries a woman for a specified term, let him give her what he named her and not take back anything from what he gave her. And let him separate from her, for indeed Allah has made it forbidden for you until the Day of Resurrection."

When the Messenger of Allah, may ﷺ , heard about this, he became angry and said, "By Allah, you know that I am the most God-conscious among you. If I had known that you would say this, I would not have brought the sacrificial animal. Obey what you are commanded to do." Then, Suraqah bin Malik stood up and asked, "O Messenger of Allah, is this Umrah a one-time act or is it for every year?" The Messenger of Allah, may ﷺ , replied, "No, it is for every year." Suraqah then asked, "O Messenger of Allah, tell us about our religion. Is it as if we were created today? Is there anything that was ceased to be written and decided?" The Messenger of Allah, may ﷺ , said, "No, it is in what has been already written and decided." Suraqah then asked, "So, what should we do, O Messenger of Allah?" He replied, "You should act upon it, for every doer will find ease." Then, he recited the verse, "But as for he who gives and fears Allah, and believes in the best [reward], We will ease him toward ease. But as for he who withholds and considers himself free of need and denies the best [reward], We will ease him toward difficulty."

Our impurities were dripping from the women, then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ was informed about that. He stood up to deliver a sermon, saying, "Indeed, Umrah is included in Hajj. If I had not brought the sacrificial animal, I would have dismounted. So whoever does not have a sacrificial animal with him should deconsecrate his Ihram." Surqah bin Malik bin Ju'shum Al-Mudlaji said, "O Messenger of Allah, tell us about a people who were born today. Is this Umrah of ours for this year only or forever?" He said, "Forever." So we came to Arafat, and when it was time to leave, Aisha said, "O Messenger of Allah, you all performed Tawaf around the Ka'bah and Sa'i between Safa and Marwa, but I did not perform Sa'i." He said, "You will have the same ruling as the people." She asked, "What do you think about me?" He halted in the highest part of Makkah's valley and 'Abdullah bin Abi Bakr assisted her until she reached Tan'im.

The Prophet (along with his companions) reached Mecca in the morning of the fourth of Dhul-Hijja assuming Ihram for Hajj only. So when we arrived at Mecca, the Prophet ﷺ ordered us to change our intentions of the Ihram for ʿUmra and that we could finish our Ihram after performing the ʿUmra and could go to our wives (for sexual intercourse). The people began talking about that. Jabir said surprisingly, "Shall we go to Mina while semen is dribbling from our male organs?" Jabir moved his hand while saying so. When this news reached the Prophet ﷺ he delivered a sermon and said, "I have been informed that some peoples were saying so and so; By Allah I fear Allah more than you do, and am more obedient to Him than you. If I had known what I know now, I would not have brought the Hadi (sacrifice) with me and had the Hadi not been with me, I would have finished the Ihram." At that Suraqa bin Malik stood up and asked "O Messenger of Allah ﷺ! Is this permission for us only or is it forever?" The Prophet ﷺ replied, "It is forever." In the meantime ʿAli bin Abu Talib came from Yemen and was saying Labbaik for what the Prophet ﷺ has intended. (According to another man, ʿAli was saying Labbaik for Hajj similar to Messenger of Allah ﷺ's). The Prophet ﷺ told him to keep on the Ihram and let him share the Hadi with him. Jabir (may Allah be pleased with him) continued, "So, we realized the command of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and he stood up to address the people. He praised and thanked Allah and then mentioned what he had heard from the people. He said, 'You know that I am the most righteous among you, the most truthful, and the most sincere to Allah. If I had not sacrificed the sacrificial animal, I would have taken off ihram even if there was a matter that I wanted to proceed with and not completed it.' Jabir bin Abdullah said, 'We heard and obeyed, so we took off ihram.' Al-Layth said, 'He meant to enjoy the rights of marriage.' And Al-Layth did not mention the story of Suraqah bin Malik."

أَهَلَّ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ وَأَهْلَلْنَا مَعَهُ بِالْحَجِّ خَالِصًا حَتَّى قَدِمْنَا مَكَّةَ صُبْحَ رَابِعَةٍ مِنْ ذِي الْحِجَّةِ فَطُفْنَا بِالْبَيْتِ وَبِالصَّفَا وَالْمَرْوَةِ ثُمَّ أَمَرَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ مَنْ لَمْ يَكُنْ مِنَّا سَاقَ هَدْيًا أَنْ يَحِلَّ قَالَ وَلَمْ يَعْزِمْ فِي أَمْرِ النِّسَاءِ قَالَ جَابِرٌ فَقُلْنَا تَرَكَنَا حَتَّى إِذَا لَمْ يَكُنْ بَيْنَنَا وَبَيْنَ عَرَفَةَ إِلَّا خَمْسُ لَيَالٍ أَمَرَنَا أَنْ نَحِلَّ فَنَأْتِيَ عَرَفَاتٍ وَالْمَذْيُ يَقْطُرُ مِنْ مَذَاكِيرِنَا وَلَمْ يَحْلِلَ هُوَ؟ وَكَانَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ قَدْ سَاقَ الْهَدْيَ قَالَ فَبَلَغَ قَوْلُنَا رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ فَقَامَ يَخْطُبُ النَّاسَ فَحَمِدَ اللهَ وَأَثْنَى عَلَيْهِ ثُمَّ ذَكَرَ الَّذِي بَلَغَهُ مِنْ قَوْلِهِمْ فَقَالَ «لَقَدْ عَلِمْتُمْ أَنِّي أَتْقَاكُمْ لِلَّهِ ﷻ وَأَصْدَقُكُمْ وَأَبَرُّكُمْ وَلَوْلَا أَنِّي سُقْتُ الْهَدْيَ لَحَلَلْتُ وَلَوِ اسْتَقْبَلْتُ مِنْ أَمْرِي مَا اسْتَدْبَرْتُ مَا أَهْدَيْتُ» قَالَ جَابِرُ بْنُ عَبْدِ اللهِ فَسَمِعْنَا وَأَطَعْنَا فَحَلَلْنَا قَالَ اللَّيْثُ يُرِيدُ الْمُتْعَةَ وَلَمْ يَذْكُرِ اللَّيْثُ قِصَّةَ سُرَاقَةَ بْنِ مَالِكٍ

[AI] We accompanied the Prophet ﷺ and arrived in Mecca in the month of Dhul-Hijjah. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ ordered us to perform Umrah, so we performed the entire rites of Umrah. We circumambulated the Kaaba and walked between Safa and Marwa. Then, on the Day of Tarwiyah, he ordered us to change our intention to perform Hajj. Some of us said to each other, "We left our homes and traveled until there were only four of us left when we reached Mina. And yet, our testicles are still dripping semen?" When the Prophet ﷺ heard about this, he said, "Do you accuse me, while I am the trustworthy person of the heavens and the earth? If I had initiated something, it would have been done." He did not mention the story of Suraqah.

"We, the Companions of the Prophet, entered Ihram for Hajj only, and nothing else. We came to Makkah on the morning of the fourth of Dhul-Hajjah, and the Prophet commanded us: "Exit Ihram and make it Umrah. He heard that we were saying: 'when there are only five days between us and 'Arafat he commands us to exit Ihram and we will go out to Mina with our male members dripping with semen (because of recent intimacy with our wives)?' the Prophet stood up and addressed us, saying: 'I have heard what you said. I am the most righteous and the most pious of you, and were it not for the Hadi I would have exited Ihram. If I had known what I know now, I would not have from Yemen and he said: 'for what did you enter Ihram?' He said: 'For that for which the Messenger of Allah entered Ihram.' Suraq bin Malik bin Jushum said: 'O Messenger of Allah, do you think that this Umrah of ours is for this year only or for all time?' He said: 'It is for all time." I, along with some people, heard Jabir b. 'Abdullah saying: We the Companions of Muhammad ﷺ put on Ihram for Hajj only. Ata' further said that Jabir stated: Allah's Apostle ﷺ came on the 4th of Dhu'l-Hijja and he commanded us to put off Ihram. 'Ata'said that he (Allah's Apostle) commanded them to put off Ihram and to go to their wives (for intercourse). 'Ata' said: It was not obligatory for them, but (intercourse) with them had become permissible. We said: When only five days had been left to reach 'Arafa, he (the Holy Prophet) commanded us to have intercourse with our wives. And we reached 'Arafa in a state as if we had just had intercourse (with them). He ('Ata') said: Jabir pointed with his hand and I (perceive) as if I am seeing his hand as it moved. In the (meantime) the Messenger of Allah ﷺ stood amongst us and said: You are well aware that I am the most God-fearing, most truthful and most pious amongst you. And if there were not sacrificial animals with me, I would also have put off Ihram as you have put off. And if I were to know this matter of mine what I have come to know later on, I would not have brought sacrificial animals with me. So they (the Companions) put off Ihram and we also put it off and listened to (the Holy Prophet) and obeyed (his command). Jabir said: 'Ali came with the revenue of the taxes (from Yemen). He (the Holy Prophet) said: For what (purpose) have you entered into the state of Ihram (whether you entered into the state purely for Hajj and, Umra jointly or Hajj and Umra separately)? He said: For the purpose for which the Messenger of Allah ﷺ had entered. (The Prophet had entered as a Qiran, i.e. Ihram covering both Umra and Hajj simultaneously.) Thereupon Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: Offer a sacrifice of animal, and retain Ihram. And 'Ali brought a sacrificial animal for him (for the Holy Prophet). Suraqa b. Malik b. Ju'shum said: Messenger of Allah, is it (this concession putting off Ihram of Hajj or Umra) meant for this year or is it forever? He said: It is forever. (Using translation from Muslim 1216a)

Jabir said “We went out along with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ raising our voices in talbiyah for Hakk alone(Ifrad) while A’ishah raised her voice in talbiyah for an ‘Umrah. When she reached Sarif, she menstruated. When we came to (Makkah) we circumambulated the Ka’bah and ran between al Safa’ and al Marwah. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ then commanded us that those who had not brought sacrificial animals withthem should put off their ihram (after ‘Umrah). We asked “Which acts are lawful(and which not)? He replied All acts are lawful (that are permissible usually). We had therefore intercourse with our wives, used perfumes, put on our clothes. There remained only four days to perform Hajj at ‘Arafah. We then raised our voice in talbiyah (wearing Ihram for Hajj) on the eighth of Dhu al Hijjah. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ entered upon A’ishah and found her weeping. He said What is the matter with you? My problem is that I have menstruated, while the people have put on their ihram but I have not done so, nor did I go round the House(the Ka’bah). Now the people are proceeding for Hajj. He said This is a thing destined by Allah to the daughters of Adam. Take a bath, then raise your voice in talbiyah for Hajj(i.e, wear ihram for Hajj). She took a abtah and performed all the rites of the Hajj(lit. she stayed at all those places where the pilgrims stay). When she was purified, she circumambulated the House (the Ka’bah), and ran between al Safa’ and al Marwah. He (the Prophet) said “Now you have performed both your Hajj and your ‘Umrah. She said Messenger of Allah, I have some misgiving in my mind that I did not go round the Ka’bah when I performed Hajj (in the beginning). He said ‘Abd al Rahman (her brother), take her and have her perform ‘Umrah from Al Tan’im. This happened on the night of Al Hasbah(i.e., the fourteenth of Dhu Al Hijjah). [AI] We (I) accompanied the Prophet ﷺ for the Farewell Hajj, and I performed Umrah but did not offer the sacrifice. So the Prophet ﷺ said, "Whoever has the sacrificial animal with them, should perform the Hajj with their Umrah, and they should not remove the Ihram until they have completed both of them." So I got my menses, and when I reached the night of Arafah, I said, "O Messenger of Allah, I performed Umrah, so what should I do with my Hajj?" He replied, "Undo your hair, comb it, and release yourself from the Umrah, and perform the Hajj." So when I completed my Hajj, Abdur Rahman ibn Abi Bakr was ordered to perform for me the Tan‘im. (Tan‘im was the place where I had discontinued the Umrah).

خَرَجْنَا مَعَ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ عَامَ حَجَّةِ الْوَدَاعِ فَأَهْلَلْتُ بِعُمْرَةٍ وَلَمْ أَكُنْ سُقْتُ الْهَدْيَ فَقَالَ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ مَنْ كَانَ مَعَهُ هَدْيٌ فَلْيُهِلَّ بِالْحَجِّ مَعَ عُمْرَتِهِ ثُمَّ لَا يَحِلُّ حَتَّى يَحِلَّ مِنْهُمَا جَمِيعًا قَالَتْ فَحِضْتُ فَلَمَّا دَخَلْتُ لَيْلَةَ عَرَفَةَ قُلْتُ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ إِنِّي كُنْتُ أَهْلَلْتُ بِعُمْرَةٍ فَكَيْفَ أَصْنَعُ بِحَجَّتِي؟ فَقَالَ انْقُضِي رَأْسَكِ وَامْشِطِي وَأَمْسِكِي عَنِ الْعُمْرَةِ وَأَهِلِّي بِالْحَجِّ فَلَمَّا قَضَيْتُ حَجَّتِي أَمَرَ عَبْدَ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنَ أَبِي بَكْرٍ فَأَعْمَرَنِي مِنَ التَّنْعِيمِ مَكَانَ عُمْرَتِي الَّتِي أَمْسَكْتُ عَنْهَا

رَوَاهُ مُسْلِمٌ فِي الصَّحِيحِ عَنْ عَبْدِ بْنِ حُمَيْدٍ عَنْ عَبْدِ الرَّزَّاقِ وَفِيهِ دَلِيلٌ عَلَى أَنَّ النَّبِيَّ ﷺ إِنَّمَا أَمَرَ أَنْ يُهِلَّ بِالْحَجِّ مَعَ الْعُمْرَةِ مَنْ كَانَ مَعَهُ هَدْيٌ وَإِنَّمَا أَمَرَ عَائِشَةَ ؓ بِذَلِكَ وَإِنْ لَمْ يَكُنْ مَعَهَا هَدْيٌ خَوْفًا مِنْ فَوَاتِ حَجَّتِهَا ثُمَّ إِنَّهُ ﷺ ذَبَحَ عَنْ أَزْوَاجِهِ الْبَقَرَ وَحَدِيثُ أَبِي الزُّبَيْرِ عَنْ جَابِرٍ يَقْطَعُ بِكَوْنِهَا قَارِنَةً وَقَدْ مَضَى ذِكْرُهُ

We went with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ with no other aim but that of Hajj till we came (to the place known as) Sarif; and there I entered in the state of menses. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ came to me while I was weeping. He said: What makes you weep? I said: Would that I had not come (for Pilgrimage) this year. He (the Holy Prophet) said: What has happened to you? You have perhaps entered the period of menses. I said: Yes. He said: This is what has been ordained for the daughters of Adam. Do what a pilgrim does except that you should not circumambulate the House, till you are purified (of the menses). She ('A'isha) said: When I came to Mecca, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to his companions: Make this (Ihram) the Ihram for 'Umra. So the people put off Ihram except those who had sacrificial animals with them. She ('A'isha) said: The Apostle of Allah ﷺ had the sacrificial animal with him, and so had Abu Bakr, 'Umar and other persons of means. They (those who had put off Ihram again) put on Ihram (for Hajj) when they marched (towards Mina), and it was the 8th of Dhu'l-Hijja. She ('A'isha) said: When it was the day of sacrifice (10th of Dhu'l-Hijja), I was purified, and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ commanded me and I did the circumambulation of Ifada. She said that the flesh of cow was sent to us. I said: What is it? They said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ has offered a cow as sacrifice on behalf of his wives. When it was the night at Hasba, I said: Messenger of Allah, people are coming back from Hajj and Umra, where as I am coming back from Hajj (alone). She (A'isha) reported: He (the Holy Prophet) commanded" Abd al-Rahman b. Abu Bakr to mount me upon his camel behind him. She ('A'isha) said: I was very young and I well remember that I dozed off and my face touched the hind part of the haudaj (camel litter) till we came to Tan'im, and entered into the state of Ihram in lieu of Umra (which I for the time being abandoned) and which the people had performed. Jabir bin Abdullah said The Apostle of Allaah ﷺ and his companions raised their voices in talbiyah for Hajj. No one of them had brought the sacrificial animals with them except the Prophet ﷺ and Talhah. Ali (may Allaah be pleased with him) had returned from Yemen and had brought sacrificial animals with him. He said I raised my voice in talbiyah for which the Apostle of Allaah ﷺ raised his voice. The Prophet ﷺ commanded his companions to change it into ‘Umrah and clip their hair after running (between Al Safa’ and Al Marwah), and then take off their ihram except those who brought the sacrificial animals with them. They remarked should we go to Mina with our penises dripping with prostatic fluid? These remarks reached the Apostle of Allaah ﷺ. Thereupon he said “had I known before hand about my affair what I have come to know later, I would not have brought sacrificial animals. Had I not brought sacrificial animals with me, I would have put off my ihram. “ (Using translation from Abū Dāʾūd 1789)

I, along with some people, heard Jabir b. 'Abdullah saying: We the Companions of Muhammad ﷺ put on Ihram for Hajj only. Ata' further said that Jabir stated: Allah's Apostle ﷺ came on the 4th of Dhu'l-Hijja and he commanded us to put off Ihram. 'Ata'said that he (Allah's Apostle) commanded them to put off Ihram and to go to their wives (for intercourse). 'Ata' said: It was not obligatory for them, but (intercourse) with them had become permissible. We said: When only five days had been left to reach 'Arafa, he (the Holy Prophet) commanded us to have intercourse with our wives. And we reached 'Arafa in a state as if we had just had intercourse (with them). He ('Ata') said: Jabir pointed with his hand and I (perceive) as if I am seeing his hand as it moved. In the (meantime) the Messenger of Allah ﷺ stood amongst us and said: You are well aware that I am the most God-fearing, most truthful and most pious amongst you. And if there were not sacrificial animals with me, I would also have put off Ihram as you have put off. And if I were to know this matter of mine what I have come to know later on, I would not have brought sacrificial animals with me. So they (the Companions) put off Ihram and we also put it off and listened to (the Holy Prophet) and obeyed (his command). Jabir said: 'Ali came with the revenue of the taxes (from Yemen). He (the Holy Prophet) said: For what (purpose) have you entered into the state of Ihram (whether you entered into the state purely for Hajj and, Umra jointly or Hajj and Umra separately)? He said: For the purpose for which the Messenger of Allah ﷺ had entered. (The Prophet had entered as a Qiran, i.e. Ihram covering both Umra and Hajj simultaneously.) Thereupon Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: Offer a sacrifice of animal, and retain Ihram. And 'Ali brought a sacrificial animal for him (for the Holy Prophet). Suraqa b. Malik b. Ju'shum said: Messenger of Allah, is it (this concession putting off Ihram of Hajj or Umra) meant for this year or is it forever? He said: It is forever. (Using translation from Muslim 1216a)

The Prophet (along with his companions) reached Mecca in the morning of the fourth of Dhul-Hijja assuming Ihram for Hajj only. So when we arrived at Mecca, the Prophet ﷺ ordered us to change our intentions of the Ihram for ʿUmra and that we could finish our Ihram after performing the ʿUmra and could go to our wives (for sexual intercourse). The people began talking about that. Jabir said surprisingly, "Shall we go to Mina while semen is dribbling from our male organs?" Jabir moved his hand while saying so. When this news reached the Prophet ﷺ he delivered a sermon and said, "I have been informed that some peoples were saying so and so; By Allah I fear Allah more than you do, and am more obedient to Him than you. If I had known what I know now, I would not have brought the Hadi (sacrifice) with me and had the Hadi not been with me, I would have finished the Ihram." At that Suraqa bin Malik stood up and asked "O Messenger of Allah ﷺ! Is this permission for us only or is it forever?" The Prophet ﷺ replied, "It is forever." In the meantime ʿAli bin Abu Talib came from Yemen and was saying Labbaik for what the Prophet ﷺ has intended. (According to another man, ʿAli was saying Labbaik for Hajj similar to Messenger of Allah ﷺ's). The Prophet ﷺ told him to keep on the Ihram and let him share the Hadi with him. "عَنْ سَبْرَةَ قَالَ: خَرَجْنَا مَعَ رَسُولِ الله ﷺ مِنَ الْمَدِينَة فِى حَجَّةِ الْوَدَاعِ حَتَّى إِذَا كُنَّا بِعسفَانَ، قَالَ رَسُولُ الله ﷺ : إِنَّ الْعُمْرَةَ قَدْ دَخَلَتْ فِى الْحَجِّ. فَقالَ لَهُ سُرَاقَةُ بْنُ مَالِكٍ: يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ! عَلِّمْنَا تَعْلِيمَ قَوْمٍ كَأَنَّمَا وُلِدُوا اليَوْمَ، عُمْرَتُنَا هَذِهِ لِعَامِنَا هَذَا أَمْ لِلأَبْدِ؟ قَالَ: بَلْ لِلأَبَدِ، فَلَمَّا قَدِمْنَا مَكَّةَ طُفْنَا بِالْبَيْتِ وَبَيْنَ الصَّفا وَالْمَرْوَةِ، ثُّمَّ أَمَرَنا بِمُتْعَةِ النِّسَاءِ فَرَجَعْنَا إِلَيْهِ، فَقُلْنَا: إِنَّهُنَّ قَدْ أَبَيْنَ إِلَّا إِلَى أَجَلٍ مُسَمَّى. قَالَ: فَافْعَلُوا. فَخَرَجْتُ أَنَا وَصاحِبٌ لِى عَلَىَّ بُرْدٌ وَعَلَيْهِ بُرْدٌ، فَدَخَلْنَا عَلَى امْرَأَةٍ فَعَرَضْنَا عَلَيْهَا أَنْفُسَنَا، فَجَعَلَتْ تَنْظُرُ إِلَى بُرْدِ صَاحِبِى فَتَرَاهُ أَجْوَدَ مِنْ بُرْدِى، وَتَنْظُرُ إِلَىَّ فَتَرَانِى أَشَبَّ مِنْهُ، فَقَالَتْ: بُرْدٌ مَكَانَ بُرْدٍ، وَاخْتَارَتْنِى فَتَزَوَّجْتُها بِبُرْدِى، فَبِتُّ مَعَها تِلْكَ اللَّيْلَة، فَلَمَّا أَصْبَحْتُ غَدَوْتُ إِلَى الْمَسْجِدِ فَإِذَا رَسُولُ الله ﷺ عَلَى الْمِنْبَرَ يَخْطُبُ فَسَمِعْتُهُ يَقُولُ: مَنْ كَانَ تَزَوَّج امْرَأةً إِلَى أَجَلٍ فَلْيُعْطِهَا مَا سَمَّى لَها وَلَا يَسْتَرْجِع مِمَّا أَعْطَاهَا شَيْئًا، فَإِنَّ اللهَ قَدْ حَرَّمَها عَلَيْكُمْ إِلَى يَوْمِ الْقِيَامَةِ".
