I said, 'O Messenger of Allah, tell us about our religion as if we are looking at it. With what the pens have written and the decrees have been established?' He said, 'No, rather it is with what the pens have written and the decrees have been established.' I said, 'So what about actions, O Messenger of Allah?' He said, 'Engage in actions, for everyone will find it easy to do what they have been created for.'"

[Machine] We went out with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ wearing our Ihram garments until women and children met us. When we arrived in Mecca, we circumambulated the Kaaba, Safa, and Marwa, the Prophet ﷺ said to us, "Whoever doesn't have a sacrificial animal should go into a state of Ihram." We asked, "What type of Ihram?" He replied, "All types of Ihram." So we approached the women, wore our clothes, and applied fragrance. On the day of Tarwiyah, we entered the state of Ihram for Hajj, and the first tawaf between Safa and Marwa was sufficient for us. The Prophet ﷺ instructed us to share the camels and cattle, with seven of us sharing each mount. Then Suraqah bin Malik came and asked, "O Messenger of Allah, explain our religion as if we were just created now. Is this Umrah for this year only, or forever?" He said, "No, it is forever."

[Machine] "We accompanied the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and performed the rituals of Hajj starting from Dhu al-Hulayfah. We performed the rites of Hajj on behalf of our children and did the Tawaf (circumambulation) for them. We also did the Sa'y (walking) between Safa and Marwa on their behalf. Then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ instructed us to declare ourselves in a state of Ihram (ritual consecration) for performing all the prohibited actions. When it was the evening of the day of Tarwiya (8th of Dhul-Hijjah), we declared ourselves in a state of Ihram for Hajj from Al-Bathaa." (The narration does not mention the story of Suraaqah ibn Malik.)

[Machine] "O Messenger of Allah, tell us about our religion as if we were created solely for it. In what do we exert our efforts? Is it in something predetermined and decreed, or in something we initiate? He ﷺ replied, 'Rather, it is in that which is predetermined and decreed.' Suraaqah said, 'Then what is the point of our actions, O Messenger of Allah?' The Messenger of Allah ﷺ replied, 'Work, for every worker will be facilitated for that which he was created for.' The Messenger of Allah ﷺ recited this verse, 'So as for he who gives and fears Allah, and believes in the best [reward], We will ease him toward ease. But as for he who withholds and considers himself free of need and denies the best [reward], We will ease him toward difficulty.' He said, 'There is no deity except Allah.' He said, 'We will ease him toward difficulty.'"

[Machine] Surahqa bin Malik bin Ju'shum came to the Prophet ﷺ and said, "O Messenger of Allah, tell us about our deeds. Are they only for this year or for eternity?" He replied, "No, they are for eternity." Surahqa then asked, "O Messenger of Allah, tell us about our works as if we were created only for a fixed time, and our fates were predetermined, or as if we had some control over them?" The Prophet ﷺ said, "No, it is something for which the book (of deeds) is fixed, and the fate is determined." Surahqa then asked, "O Messenger of Allah, then what is the use of actions?" He replied, "Engage in them, for everyone is facilitated for what he has been created."

[Machine] We went out with the Messenger of Allah, may ﷺ , to perform the Hajj, so we arrived at Mecca and performed Tawaf around the Kaaba and between Safa and Marwa. Then, the Messenger of Allah, may ﷺ , addressed us and said, "Whoever has not brought a sacrificial animal, let him perform Umrah instead." We asked, "What is Umrah, O Messenger of Allah?" He replied, "Umrah is every type of performance." So, we prepared ourselves, wore the clothes of Ihram, and applied perfume. Some people said that we should perform Umrah after reaching Arafah for four days. When the Messenger of Allah, may ﷺ , heard about this, he became angry and said, "By Allah, you know that I am the most God-conscious among you. If I had known that you would say this, I would not have brought the sacrificial animal. Obey what you are commanded to do." Then, Suraqah bin Malik stood up and asked, "O Messenger of Allah, is this Umrah a one-time act or is it for every year?" The Messenger of Allah, may ﷺ , replied, "No, it is for every year." Suraqah then asked, "O Messenger of Allah, tell us about our religion. Is it as if we were created today? Is there anything that was ceased to be written and decided?" The Messenger of Allah, may ﷺ , said, "No, it is in what has been already written and decided." Suraqah then asked, "So, what should we do, O Messenger of Allah?" He replied, "You should act upon it, for every doer will find ease." Then, he recited the verse, "But as for he who gives and fears Allah, and believes in the best [reward], We will ease him toward ease. But as for he who withholds and considers himself free of need and denies the best [reward], We will ease him toward difficulty."

[Machine] We went out with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ as pilgrims, desiring only the Hajj and intending nothing else. But when it reached the days of Sarif, Aisha menstruated and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ entered upon her while she was crying. He asked, "What makes you cry?" She said, "I have been afflicted with menstrual bleeding." He said, "You are from the daughters of Adam, and this is what afflicts them." We arrived in Mecca for four nights, free from the days of Hajj, so we performed Tawaf around the Ka'bah and Sa'i between Safa and Marwa, as the Messenger of Allah ﷺ commanded us to do. We were conversing among ourselves, saying, "We have gone out as pilgrims, desiring only the Hajj and intending nothing else, until there is only four nights between us and Arafat." Our impurities were dripping from the women, then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ was informed about that. He stood up to deliver a sermon, saying, "Indeed, Umrah is included in Hajj. If I had not brought the sacrificial animal, I would have dismounted. So whoever does not have a sacrificial animal with him should deconsecrate his Ihram." Surqah bin Malik bin Ju'shum Al-Mudlaji said, "O Messenger of Allah, tell us about a people who were born today. Is this Umrah of ours for this year only or forever?" He said, "Forever." So we came to Arafat, and when it was time to leave, Aisha said, "O Messenger of Allah, you all performed Tawaf around the Ka'bah and Sa'i between Safa and Marwa, but I did not perform Sa'i." He said, "You will have the same ruling as the people." She asked, "What do you think about me?" [Machine] We arrived with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ on the morning of the fourth day of Dhul-Hijjah, performing the rites of Hajj together. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ ordered us to perform Tawaf (circumambulation) around the Kaaba, pray, and then perform Sa'i (walking) between Safa and Marwa. He then ordered us to shorten our hair, and said, "You may now enter into a state of Ihram for whatever is permissible of women and perfume." The women then covered their faces, and the scent of their perfumes filled the air. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ heard someone asking, "Where should we go to release ourselves to Minah?" and he mentioned that semen may drip. He addressed them, praised and thanked Allah, and then said, "If it were not for my intention, I would not have performed the Hady (sacrifice)." Even if I did not perform the Hady, I would still have performed the Halq (shaving the head). So fulfill your rituals accordingly." The entire group stood still until it was the day of Tarwiyah (8th of Dhul-Hijjah), and they intended to head towards Minah. The people of Hajj were allowed, and the Hady (sacrifice) was to be performed by those who found the animal. The fasting was for those who did not find an animal. The dividing line between their sacrificed animals was the Jazur (a type of sheep) for seven people, and a cow for seven people. Their Tawaf (circumambulation) around the Kaaba and Sa'i (walking) between Safa and Marwa were to be performed together as one, whether it was for Hajj or Umrah. The story of Suraaqah ibn Malik was not mentioned.

[Machine] I arrived in Mecca while enjoying the Umrah. We arrived three days before Tarwiyah, and the people of Mecca told me that my Hajj will now be categorized as a Makki Hajj. I visited Ata ibn Abi Rabah to seek his advice, and he said that Jabir ibn Abdullah told him that he performed Hajj with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ on the day of Saaq Al-Budan, and they had entered Mecca for Hajj separately. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ told them to start their Ihram by performing Tawaf around the Kaaba and between Safa and Marwa, and to continue their rituals until the day of Tarwiyah when they should enter into the state of Hajj. They should also consider the acts they have already performed as part of their Umrah. They asked how they could consider it an Umrah when they have already called it Hajj. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Do as I have commanded you. Had it not been for the fact that I have already slaughtered my animal, I would have done what I commanded you. But it is not permissible for me to perform a prohibited act until the place of sacrifice is reached." So they did as instructed, and the story of Suraqah ibn Malik is not mentioned.

Jabir said The Apostle of Allaah ﷺ and his companions came to Makkah on the fourth of Dhu Al Hijjah. When they circumambulated the Ka’bah and ran between al Safa’ and al Marwah the Apostle of Allaah ﷺ said Change this (Hajj) into ‘Umrah, except those who have brought the sacrificial animals with them. When the eighth of Dhul Al Hijjah came, they raised their voices in talbiyah for Hall. When the tenth of Dhul Al Hijjah came, they circumambulated the Ka’bah, but did not run between al Safa’ and Al Marwah. (Using translation from Abū Dāʾūd 1788)

The Prophet (along with his companions) reached Mecca in the morning of the fourth of Dhul-Hijja assuming Ihram for Hajj only. So when we arrived at Mecca, the Prophet ﷺ ordered us to change our intentions of the Ihram for ʿUmra and that we could finish our Ihram after performing the ʿUmra and could go to our wives (for sexual intercourse). The people began talking about that. Jabir said surprisingly, "Shall we go to Mina while semen is dribbling from our male organs?" Jabir moved his hand while saying so. When this news reached the Prophet ﷺ he delivered a sermon and said, "I have been informed that some peoples were saying so and so; By Allah I fear Allah more than you do, and am more obedient to Him than you. If I had known what I know now, I would not have brought the Hadi (sacrifice) with me and had the Hadi not been with me, I would have finished the Ihram." At that Suraqa bin Malik stood up and asked "O Messenger of Allah ﷺ! Is this permission for us only or is it forever?" The Prophet ﷺ replied, "It is forever." In the meantime ʿAli bin Abu Talib came from Yemen and was saying Labbaik for what the Prophet ﷺ has intended. (According to another man, ʿAli was saying Labbaik for Hajj similar to Messenger of Allah ﷺ's). The Prophet ﷺ told him to keep on the Ihram and let him share the Hadi with him. (Using translation from Bukhārī 2505)

Then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ commanded those who did not bring a sacrificial animal to perform hajj to do so. He did not give any specific instructions concerning women. Jabir (may Allah be pleased with him) said, "We waited until there were only five nights left between us and Arafah. Then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ commanded us to enter ihram (sacral state) and go to Arafah, while the sweat was dripping from our foreheads, and he himself had already performed the sa'i." Jabir (may Allah be pleased with him) continued, "So, we realized the command of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and he stood up to address the people. He praised and thanked Allah and then mentioned what he had heard from the people. He said, 'You know that I am the most righteous among you, the most truthful, and the most sincere to Allah. If I had not sacrificed the sacrificial animal, I would have taken off ihram even if there was a matter that I wanted to proceed with and not completed it.' Jabir bin Abdullah said, 'We heard and obeyed, so we took off ihram.' Al-Layth said, 'He meant to enjoy the rights of marriage.' And Al-Layth did not mention the story of Suraqah bin Malik."

[Machine] The Prophet ﷺ gave us permission to perform Hajj, so we set out. When we reached the mosque near the tree, we stopped and rested. Then we mounted and stood, waiting for the Prophet to mount his conveyance. When we arrived in Mecca, he performed Tawaf (circumambulation) and Sa'i (running between Safa and Marwa) and prayed two Rak'ahs (units of prayer) in which he recited Surah Al-Kafirun (Chapter of the Disbelievers) and Surah Al-Ikhlas (Chapter of Monotheism). Then we performed Sa'i between Safa and Marwa. When we reached Marwa, he said, "Whoever has not brought the sacrificial animal, should remove the Ihram." We said, "O Messenger of Allah! We intended to perform Hajj." He replied, “Hajj is included in the 'Umrah." We encountered difficulties with our wives and our perfumes. When we were between Mina and Muzdalifah and had four days left, our memories began to wander and our wives’ menses started, causing us to have dripping. So Suraqah bin Malik came and said, "Inform us, O Messenger of Allah, like people who were born today. Did Hajj become an obligation for us or will it remain so forever?" He replied, "No, it is not an obligation for us, but it will remain so forever."

[Machine] When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ arrived in Mecca during the Farewell Hajj, he asked his companions, "With what intention have you performed Ihram?" Some of them said, "For Hajj," while others said, "For Umrah." And among them were those who said, "For whatever intention you have performed Ihram with, O Messenger of Allah." He replied, "Thus, all of you have made the intention except for the one who has brought the sacrificial animal. For if I had known about it beforehand, I would not have brought the sacrificial animal until I joined you in performing the rituals of Hajj." Then he ordered someone to bring him a hundred camels so that he could follow his example. Muhammad ibn Salamah did not mention the story of Surāqah.

[Machine] When I came with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ during his Hajj, he asked the people, "With what did you enter Ihram?" Some people said, "We entered Ihram for Hajj." Others said, "We entered as mu'tamirs (umrah pilgrims)." And others said, "We entered Ihram due to your Ihmal (indicating the beginning of the lunar month) O Messenger of Allah." The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Whoever entered (Makkah) and has not brought a sacrificial animal, then he should make tahallul (come out of Ihram) as I would have made the sacrificial animal haraam (not permissible) for me if I received any matter (revelation or command) before my tahallul (coming out of Ihram)." Suraqah bin Malik said, "O Messenger of Allah! Is this 'Umrah for this year or forever?" He said, "No, rather forever."

[Machine] We accompanied the Messenger of Allah ﷺ with the intention of performing Hajj. So the Messenger of Allah ﷺ ordered those who did not have a sacrificial animal with them to make it an Umrah. This greatly affected the people. Talhah ibn Ubaydullah had a sacrificial animal with him, and Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) came from Yemen. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ asked him, "By what did you perform the Ihram?" He replied, "By what you performed the Ihram with." The Messenger of Allah ﷺ had a sacrificial animal with him, along with a hundred sacrificial animals. Suraqah asked the Messenger of Allah ﷺ , "O Messenger of Allah, is this Hajj for this year or for every year?" He said, "No, but it is for every year."

[Machine] We accompanied the Prophet ﷺ and arrived in Mecca in the month of Dhul-Hijjah. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ ordered us to perform Umrah, so we performed the entire rites of Umrah. We circumambulated the Kaaba and walked between Safa and Marwa. Then, on the Day of Tarwiyah, he ordered us to change our intention to perform Hajj. Some of us said to each other, "We left our homes and traveled until there were only four of us left when we reached Mina. And yet, our testicles are still dripping semen?" When the Prophet ﷺ heard about this, he said, "Do you accuse me, while I am the trustworthy person of the heavens and the earth? If I had initiated something, it would have been done." He did not mention the story of Suraqah.
