13.35 [Machine] The statement translates to: "Rifa'ah ibn Sahl al-Juhani narrated from Sahl ibn Hunayf.

tabarani:5597Muḥammad b. Rāshid al-Aṣbahānī > Ibrāhīm b. ʿAbdullāh b. Khālid al-Miṣṣīṣī > Ḥajjāj b. Muḥammad > Muḥammad b. Muṭarrif Abū Ghassān al-Madīnī > Abū al-Ḥūwayrith > Muʿāwiyah b. ʿAbdullāh b. Yazīd > Rifāʿah b. Sahl al-Juhanī > Sahl b. Ḥunayf

[Machine] I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ while he was coming out of one of his houses, dragging his garment, and saying, "People will acquire goods and then a time will come upon the city when travel will pass through some parts of it, and they will say, 'This was once a flourishing city in the past for a long time.'"

tabarani:5598ʿAlī b. ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz > Abū Ḥudhayfah > Sufyān al-Thawrī > al-Aʿmash > Abū Wāʾil

[Machine] Sahl ibn Hunaif on the day of Siffin said, "O people, accuse your opinion over your religion. For indeed, I have seen us while we were with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ , and if we were able to refute him, we would have done so. And we have not placed our swords on our shoulders in a matter except it was easy for us to go to a matter that we know other than our own matter. And I have seen us on the day of Abi Jandal, and if we were able to refute the command of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ , we would have done so."

tabarani:5599Abū Muslim al-Kashhī > Yaḥyá b. Ḥammād > Abū ʿAwānah > Sulaymān al-Aʿmash > Abū Wāʾil

[Machine] Sahl ibn Hunayf said, "Do not criticize personal opinions regarding religion, for I have seen us when we were with the Messenger of Allah." And he mentioned the Hadith.

tabarani:5600Abū Muslim al-Kashhī > Ibrāhīm b. Bashhār al-Ramādī > Sufyān b. ʿUyaynah > al-Aʿmash > Abū Wāʾil

[Machine] About Sahl bin Hunaif, he said, "O people, do not judge religion based on personal opinions. Verily, I have seen us while we were with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ." Then, he mentioned the Hadith.

tabarani:5601ʿUbayd b. Ghannām > Abū Bakr b. Abū Shaybah > Abū Muʿāwiyah > al-Aʿmash > Shaqīq > Sahl b. Ḥunayf Biṣiffīn

I heard Sahl b. Hunaif say at Siffin: O ye people, find fault with your (own) discretion. By Allah, on the Day of Abu Jandal (i. e. the day of Hudaibiya), I thought to myself that, if I could, I would reverse the order of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ (the terms of the truce being unpalatable). By Allah, we have never hung our swords on our shoulders in any situation whatsoever except when they made easy for us to realise the goal envisaged by us, but this battle of yours (seems to be an exception). Ibn Numair (in his version) did not mention the words:" In any situation whatsoever" (Using translation from Muslim 1785b)

tabarani:5602Muʿādh b. al-Muthanná > ʿAmr b. Marzūq > Mālik b. Mighwal > Abū Ḥuṣayn > Abū Wāʾil

[Machine] "They accused reasoning over religion, and indeed I saw myself on the day of Abi Jandal, and if we could respond to the command of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ , we would have responded." And Allah and His Messenger know best.

tabarani:5603ʿAlī b. Saʿīd al-Rāzī > Isḥāq b. Shāhīn > Khālid > Abū Saʿd al-Baqqāl > Abū Ḥuṣayn > Shaqīq b. Salamah > Sahl b. Ḥunayf

[Machine] "Once, I wanted to respond to the messenger of Allah ﷺ about his matter, but he returned it to me and he was better and more honorable than me. He said, «Abu Jandal came to the messenger of Allah ﷺ as a Muslim, while his father was a disbeliever. The messenger of Allah ﷺ returned him to his father, who then tied him up, and Abu Jandal came back and he was returned again.»"

tabarani:5604ʿUbayd b. Ghannām > Abū Bakr b. Abū Shaybah > ʿAbdullāh b. Numayr > ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz b. Siyāh > Ḥabīb b. Abū Thābit > Abū Wāʾil > Sahl b. Ḥunayf

Sahal b. Hunaif stood up on the Day of Siffin and said: O ye people, blame yourselves (for want of discretion) ; we were with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ on the Day of Hudaibiya. If we had thought it fit to fight, we could fight. This was in the truce between the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and the polytheists. Umar b. Khattab came, approached the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and said: Messenger of Allah, aren't we fighting for truth and they for falsehood? He replied: By all means. He asked: Are not those killed from our side in Paradise and those killed. from their side in the Fire? He replied: Yes. He said: Then why should we put a blot upon our religion and return, while Allah has not decided the issue between them and ourselves? He said: Son of Khattab, I am the Messenger of Allah. Allah will never ruin me. (The narrator said): Umar went away, but he could not contain himself with rage. So he approached Abu Bakr and said: 'Abu Bakr, aren't we fighting for truth and they for falsehood? He replied: Yes. He asked: Aren't those killed from our side in Paradise and those killed from their side in the Fire? He replied: Why not? He (then) said: Why should we then disgrace our religion and return while God has not yet decided the issue between them and ourselves? Abu Bakr said: Son of Khattab, verily, he is the Messenger of Allah, and Allah will never ruin him. (The narrator continued): At this (a Sura of) the Qur'an (giving glad tidings of the victory) was revealed to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. He sent for Umar and made him read it. He asked: Is (this truce) a victory? He (the Messenger of Allah) replied: Yes. At this Umar was pleased, and returned. (Using translation from Muslim 1785a)
