12. Ḥajj and ʿUmrah (13/34)
[Machine] Then he enters Makkah at dawn and comes to the Kaaba. He takes hold of the black stone and says, "In the name of Allah, Allah is the greatest."
[Machine] He used to, whenever passing by the Black Stone and seeing a crowd gathered around it, face it and say "O Allah, as a declaration of belief in Your book and the tradition of Your Prophet Muhammad ﷺ ."
[Machine] He used to say, "When the stone is received, O Allah, with faith in You, affirmation of Your book, and following the tradition of Your Prophet ﷺ ." Abu Nasr ibn Qatada informed us that Abu al-Hasan Muhammad ibn al-Hasan al-Sarraj narrated to him that Mutayyan reported to him from Abu Bilal al-Ash'ari who reported from Shariq, from Abi Ishaq, who said, "And Mutayyan narrated to us from Ibrahim ibn Muhammad al-Shafi'i who narrated from Hafs ibn Ghayath, from Abi al-Umais, from Ali." With that, he narrated.
12.145 [Machine] Fingerprints for Tawaf
The Messenger of Allah ﷺ went round the House (the Ka'bah) wearing a green Yamani mantle under his right armpit with the end over his left shoulder. (Using translation from Abū Dāʾūd 1883)
[Machine] I saw the Prophet ﷺ circumambulating the Kaaba while wearing shoes. Abu Isa said, "I asked him, 'Does this include Al-Bukhari, the son of Abd al-Hameed?' He replied, 'No, it refers to Ibn Jubayr bin Shaybah and Ibn Ya'la bin Umayyah.'"
[Machine] The Messenger of Allah and his companions mounted (their camels) and traveled for three stages and then walked for four stages.
[Machine] The Messenger of Allah and his companions performed Umrah from Ji'ranah. They halted at the Bayt (i.e. Ka'bah) and pinched and placed their garments beneath their armpits and on their left shoulders. The wording of the hadith of Sulaiman is 9257, and Abu Ali Al-Rudhbary informed us that Abu Bakr ibn Dasa narrated to us that Abu Dawud narrated to us that Abu Salamah Musa ibn Ismail narrated to us from Hammad, who mentioned it in a similar manner, except that he said: They halted at the Bayt and placed their garments beneath their armpits, then they threw them on their left shoulders.
I heard ʿUmar bin al-Khattab say: Why are we running now and uncovering our shoulders (in tawaf) when Allah has caused Islam to prevail and has eliminated kufr and its people? Whatever the case, we will never give up something that we did at the time of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. (Using translation from Aḥmad 317)
12.146 [Machine] The recommendation of performing the act in every cycle, if not, then in every odd numbered cycle
[Machine] It was reported that the Prophet ﷺ would not miss these two corners in every circumambulation around the Kaaba, the Black Corner and the Yemeni Corner. He would touch them with his hands, but would not touch the corners near the Black Stone.
[Machine] I said to Ibn Umar, "Why do I see you jostling for these two corners and I have not seen anyone from the companions of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ competing for them except you?" He said, "I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ saying, 'Wiping them removes sins.'"
12.147 [Machine] Receiving in the crowd
[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "O Umar, you are a strong man, do not harm the weak when you intend to take the stone. If it moves away from you, then take it, otherwise, face it and say 'Allahu Akbar'."
[Machine] Indeed, Umar was a strong man and he used to contend for a place at the corner. So, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to him, "O Umar, do not contend for a place at the corner, for you harm the weak. If you see an empty space, take it, otherwise face the corner and make Takbeer and walk."
[Machine] The Prophet of Allah ﷺ asked Abdur Rahman ibn Awf during the Farewell Pilgrimage, "How did you treat Abu Muhammad?" He replied, "I served and gave him precedence." The Prophet ﷺ said, "You have indeed achieved the correct way."
[Machine] If you find a crowd at the corner, leave and do not stand.
[Machine] To make a circuit; if it becomes easy for you, then surrender.
[Machine] If you meet him, magnify and praise and send blessings upon Muhammad, the prophet, ﷺ .
[Machine] I have never seen him push on the rock, but I have seen him once push until his nose was crushed and blood started flowing from his nostrils.
[Machine] Aisha, the wife of the Prophet ﷺ, the mother of the believers, had a servant enter upon her. She said to her, "O mother of the believers, I have circumambulated the Ka'bah seven times and performed the Sa'y (running between Safa and Marwah) two or three times." Aisha said to her, "May Allah not reward you! May Allah not reward you! Do you repel men? Have you not performed the Tawaf (circumambulation) and the Sa'y?" It was narrated from Sa'd bin Abi Waqqas that he used to say to them, "When you find a gap from the people, perform the Sa'y. Otherwise, raise your voices and move on."
12.148 [Machine] Sand in Tawaf during Hajj and Umrah
[Machine] I said to Nafi', "Did he used to walk between the two corners?" He replied, "He used to only walk because it was easier for him to reach."
[Machine] The Prophet ﷺ performed three Circuits (Tawaf) and Surayj said three laps, then he walked four (times) in Hajj and Umrah.
12.149 [Machine] How was the sand dune?
[Machine] The Messenger of Allah, ﷺ , threw pebbles and said that it is a sunnah (practice). I said, "Did they believe and disbelieve?" He said, "Indeed, the Messenger of Allah, ﷺ , had arrived and the polytheists were on the verge of attacking. The people of Mecca were a jealous people, so they started talking among themselves that the companions of the Messenger of Allah, ﷺ , are weak. So the Messenger of Allah said, 'Should I show them something that they dislike?' So he threw pebbles in order to show the polytheists his strength and the strength of his companions. But it is not a sunnah." I said, "Indeed, your people claim that the Messenger of Allah, ﷺ , rode between Safa and Marwa and that it is a sunnah." He said, "They believed and disbelieved." I said, "Did the Messenger of Allah, ﷺ , arrive in Mecca?" He said, "Yes, he arrived in Mecca and the people of Mecca were a jealous people, so they came out until the blind man looked at the Messenger of Allah, ﷺ , and the Messenger of Allah, ﷺ , did not stop him. He said, 'They are increasing in favor of him' meaning that they were not being pushed away from him. So he rode and walking was more beloved to him; that is the narration of Abu Abdullah."
[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ and his companions arrived, weakened by fever due to the heat of Yathrib. The polytheists said, "A group is advancing towards you, weakened by fever." So they sat down for them beside the stones. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ ordered them to stone the three (pillars) and to walk between the two corners. He did not prevent them from stoning the entire rounds except that he instructed them to retain one (round). Abu Muslim did not mention the fever of Yathrib.
Messenger of Allah ﷺ and his Companions came to Mecca and the fever in Medina had weakened them. Thereupon the polytheists (of Mecca) said: There would come to you a people whom the fever has made weak and they have suffered severely from it. They sat in Hatim. Thereupon Allah's Apostle ﷺ commanded them to walk quickly ift three circuits and walk (in four) between the two corners. so that the polytheists should. see their endurance. The polytheists then said (to one anothery You were under the impression that fever had emaciated them. whereas they are stronger than so and so. Ibn Abbas said: He (the Holy Prophet) did not command them (the Muslims) to walk quickly in all the circuits out of kindness to them. (Using translation from Muslim 1266a)
[Machine] The Messenger of Allah, may ﷺ , made efforts between the Safa and Marwa hills to show the strength to the disbelievers.
The Prophet ﷺ hastened in going around the Kaʿba and between the Safa and Marwa in order to show the pagans his strength. Ibn ʿAbbas added, "When the Prophet ﷺ arrived (at Mecca) in the year of peace (following that of Al-Hudaibiya treaty with the pagans of Mecca), he (ordered his companions) to do Ramal in order to show their strength to the pagans and the pagans were watching (the Muslims) from (the hill of) Quaiqan. (Using translation from Bukhārī 4257)
12.150 [Machine] The Evidence that it remains a valid ritual in Tawaf.
[Machine] As for Allah, I know that you are a stone that does not harm or benefit. But I saw the Messenger of Allah ﷺ take hold of you, and I also took hold of you. So he took possession of you and said, "What do we have with the sand? We have only seen the polytheists using it, and Allah has destroyed them." Then he said, "There is something that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ did, and we do not want to leave it." Then he threw the sand.

[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ threw stones from the Black Stone to the Black Stone three times and then walked four rounds.
[Machine] He said, "I saw the Messenger of Allah ﷺ touch the Black Stone and make three circuits around it."
[Machine] He turned to his right and completed three rounds, then walked four steps, and reached the station where he prayed two units behind it.
12.152 [Machine] The Sand in the First Tawaf, and the Sa'i that is performed when arriving in Mecca for Hajj or Umrah.
[Machine] That the Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to perform the first tawaf around the Kaaba by jogging three times and walking four times, and Ibn Umar used to do it as well. And he used to walk briskly between Safa and Marwa (during Sa'i) and I said to Nafi': "Did Abdullah (Ibn Umar) walk when he reached the Yamani corner?" He said: "No, unless he was in a crowd near the corner, because he would not leave it until he surrendered it."
[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to perform three tawafs around the Kaaba first when performing Hajj or Umrah. Then, he would walk four rounds between Safa and Marwa, and then pray two prostrations. This is narrated by Ibn 'Abbad, and in another narration by Shuja'. It did not mention what comes after that.
It was narrated from ‘Abdullah bin ‘Abbas that the Prophet ﷺ did not walk quickly (Ramal) during the seven circuits of Tawaful-Ifadah (done on 10th day of Dhul-Hijjah). (Using translation from Ibn Mājah 3060)
[Machine] Al-Shafi'i in the past in his saying "does not seek" means does not neglect. He said, "And whoever prohibits themselves from entering Mecca or performs Tawaf before Mina, then performs Tawaf on the Day of Sacrifice, they have not neglected. Neglect is only for those who begin their Tawaf."
12.153 [Machine] No throwing of sand on women
[Machine] Abu Al-Abbas Al-Asamm reported that Ar-Rabi' said that Ash-Shafi'i said that Sa'id narrated from Ibn Jurayj from 'Ubaydullah ibn 'Umar from Nafi' from Ibn 'Umar that he said: "There is no obligation for women to perform the Sa'y (ritual walk) between Safa and Marwa." Al-Shafi'i also narrated this from Aisha and 'Ata.
[Machine] O women, you do not have to sweep the house, but you are our example.
12.154 [Machine] The saying about tawaf
[Machine] "And he should say in his Tawaf: 'O Allah, make it a accepted pilgrimage, a forgiven sin, and a blessed effort.' And he should say in the four rounds around the Kaaba: 'O Allah, forgive, have mercy, and pardon what You know best. You are the Most Honorable, the Most Generous.' 'O Allah, grant us goodness in this world and goodness in the Hereafter, and protect us from the punishment of the Fire.'"
[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ circled around on his camel, and whenever he reached the corner, he pointed towards it and raised his voice in Takbeer.
I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say between the two corners: O Allah, bring us a blessing in this world and a blessing in the next and guard us from punishment of Hell. (Using translation from Abū Dāʾūd 1892)
[Machine] He saw Umar circling the Kaaba and saying, "Our Lord, give us good in this world and good in the Hereafter and protect us from the punishment of the Fire." [Al-Baqarah 201] His (Umar's) tears were flowing down other than that.
12.155 [Machine] Minimizing speech without mentioning Allah during Tawaf.
[Machine] ''On the authority of the Prophet ﷺ , he said that circumambulating the Kaaba is a form of prayer, except that permission has been given to speak during it. So whoever is able to speak only good, let him do so. And likewise''
"Speak little when you are perfoming Tawaf for you are in a state of Salah". (Sahih Mawquf) (Using translation from Nasāʾī 2923)
[Machine] Whoever circles this house seven times is not to speak in it except with takbeer (saying "Allahu Akbar") or tahleel (saying "La ilaha illallah"). They will be rewarded as if they have freed a slave.
12.156 [Machine] Drinking during Tawaf (circumambulation) Imam Shafi'i said in dictation: It was narrated from Ibn Abbas that he drank while performing Tawaf and sat on the wall of the Stone (Black Stone). It was also narrated from another face that it is not confirmed that the Prophet ﷺ drank while performing Tawaf. The Sheikh said: And perhaps he meant what:
[Machine] That the Prophet ﷺ drank water during Tawaf, this is peculiar with this wording, and the well-known narration from Aasim al-Ahwal is not like this.
[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ passed by Zamzam and requested water, so I brought him a bucket of Zamzam water and he drank it while standing.
[Machine] I gave the Messenger of Allah ﷺ water from Zamzam, he drank while standing and performed Istisqaa (asking Allah for rain) while he was near the Kaaba. Abu Abdullah Al-Haafiz informed us that Abu Bakr bin Abdullah narrated to him from Al-Hasan bin Sufyan, who narrated to him from Ubaidullah bin Muadh, who narrated to him from his father, who narrated from Shu'bah, and mentioned it.
12.157 [Machine] The Tawaf of Purification.
[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ performed Hajj and Aisha informed me that the first thing he did when he arrived in Mecca was to perform ablution, then he circumambulated the Kaaba and mentioned the teachings.
