12. Ḥajj and ʿUmrah (8/34)
That the Messenger of Allah began the Talbiyah following the prayer. (Using translation from Nasāʾī 2754)
Sa'id ibn Jubayr said: I said to Abdullah ibn Abbas: AbulAbbas, I am surprised to see the difference of opinion amongst the companions of the Apostle ﷺ about the wearing of ihram by the Messenger of Allah ﷺ when he made it obligatory. He replied: I am aware of it more than the people. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ performed only one hajj. Hence the people differed among themselves. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ came out (from Medina) with the intention of performing hajj. When he offered two rak'ahs of prayer in the mosque at Dhul-Hulayfah, he made it obligatory by wearing it. At the same meeting, he raised his voice in the talbiyah for hajj, when he finished his two rak'ahs. Some people heard it and I retained it from him. He then rode (on the she-camel), and when it (the she-camel) stood up, with him on its back, he raised his voice in the talbiyah and some people heard it at that moment. This is because the people were coming in groups, so they heard him raising his voice calling the talbiyah when his she-camel stood up with him on its back, and they thought that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ had raised his voice in the talbiyah when his she-camel stood up with him on its back. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ proceeded further; when he ascended the height of al-Bayda' he raised his voice in the talbiyah. Some people heard it at that moment. They thought that he had raised his voice in the talbiyah when he ascended the height of al-Bayda'. I swear by Allah, he raised his voice in the talbiyah at the place where he prayed, and he raised his voice in the talbiyah when his she-camel stood up with him on its back, and he raised his voice in the talbiyah when he ascended the height of al-Bayda'. Sa'id (ibn Jubayr) said; He who follows the view of Ibn Abbas raises his voice in talbiyah (and ihram) at the place of is prayer after he finishes two rak'ahs of his prayer. (Using translation from Abū Dāʾūd 1770)

AbuAbdurRahman, I saw you doing things which I did not see being done by your companions. He asked: What are they, Ibn Jurayj? He replied: I saw you touching only the two Yamani corners; and I saw you wearing shoes having no hair; I saw you dyeing in yellow colour; and I saw you wearing ihram on the eighth of Dhul-Hijjah, whereas the people had worn ihram when they sighted the moon. Abdullah ibn Umar replied: As regards the corners, I have not seen the Messenger of Allah ﷺ touching anything (in the Ka'bah) but the two Yamani corners. As for the tanned leather shoes, I have seen the Messenger of Allah ﷺ wearing tanned leather shoes, and he would wear them after ablution. Therefore I like to wear them. As regards wearing yellow, I have seen the Messenger of Allah ﷺ wearing yellow, so I like to wear with it. As regards shouting the talbiyah, I have seen the Messenger of Allah ﷺ raising his voice in talbiyah when his she-camel stood up with him on its back. (Using translation from Abū Dāʾūd 1772)

[Machine] He said, "By your life, which you lie upon the Messenger of Allah ﷺ! The Messenger of Allah ﷺ did not go to any mosque except the Masjid Dhi al-Hulayfah, 8985." And Abu Abdullah al-Hafiz informed us that Abu al-Hasan Ali ibn Muhammad ibn Sakhawah informed us that Muhammad ibn Abd al-Salam informed us that Yahya ibn Yahya said, "I read about Malik and he mentioned it."

[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ prayed four units of Dhuhr prayer in Madinah and then prayed two units of Asr prayer in Dhul-Hulayfah. Then, he stayed there overnight, and when morning came and his riding animal was ready, he set off.
[Machine] Sa'd said, "The Messenger of Allah ﷺ, when he would take the path of Fur', he would say farewell to his family as he mounted his camel. And when he would take the other path, he would say farewell to his family as he ascended the highland of the desert. Another person said, 'This is the path to Uhud.'"

12.68 [Machine] The intention in ihram.
I heard Messenger of Allah ﷺ saying, "The (reward of) deeds, depend upon the intentions and every person will get the reward according to what he has intended. So whoever emigrated for the sake of Allah and His Apostle, then his emigration will be considered to be for Allah and His Apostle, and whoever emigrated for the sake of worldly gain or for a woman to marry, then his emigration will be considered to be for what he emigrated for." (Using translation from Bukhārī 6689)

[Machine] We went out with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, not mentioning Hajj or Umrah, and he mentioned the hadith.
[Machine] Jabir ibn Abdullah narrated about the story of the Prophet's Hajj, saying: "So he (the Prophet) performed the Tawhid, and the people followed him in what they were accustomed to. But he did not respond to them at all. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ adhered to his own way and said, 'We intend only Hajj. We do not know how to perform Umrah.'"
[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ never named his Hajj or Umrah.

[Machine] Jabir and Abu Sa'id Al-Khudri said, "We came with the Prophet ﷺ while we were loudly shouting during Hajj."
[Machine] We arrived with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ while saying "Labbaik Allahumma bi al-Hajj" (Here I am, O Allah, for Hajj). So the Messenger of Allah ﷺ commanded us and we performed it as an Umrah.
[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ prayed four units (rakaats) of Dhuhr (midday) prayer in Al-Madinah, and two units (rakaats) of Asr (afternoon) prayer in Dhi al-Hulayfah. Anas said, "I heard them (the companions) all shouting in unison, 'Hajj' and 'Umrah'."
[Machine] That the Messenger of Allah ﷺ performed Hajj and Umrah, so he said: "Labbaik, Allahumma labbaik. (Here I am, O Allah, here I am) for Umrah and Hajj."
I heard Allah's Apostle (way peace be upon him) pronouncing Talbiya for both Hajj and Umra. Bakr (one of the narrators) said: I narrated it to Ibn 'Umar, whereupon he said: He (the Holy Prophet) pronounced the Talbiya for Hajj alone. I met Anas and narrated to him the words of Ibn 'Umar, whereupon he said: You treat us not but only as children. I heard Messenger of Allah ﷺ pronouncing Talbiya both for 'Umra and Hajj. (Using translation from Muslim 1232a)
12.71 [Machine] Whoever performs the welcome tawaf without intending to enter the state of ihram, he does not become a muhrim. Imam Al-Shafi`i, may Allah have mercy on him, said: It has been narrated that Ibn Mas'ud met a group of people entering Makkah in the state of ihram, so he performed the welcome tawaf, while he himself was inside the Ka'bah. It had been a long time since the Prophet, ﷺ , said: "Verily, actions are judged by intentions.

[Machine] He said, "O Messenger of Allah, is the cancellation of the pilgrimage specific to us or to whoever came?" He said, "No, it is specific to us."

[Machine] Darrin, a companion of the Prophet ﷺ, said: "There was a permission for us that no one else had, meaning the option to combine Hajj and Umrah in the same trip." Yahya confirmed that this was true among us, as Abu Bakr, Umar, and Uthman did not break their Hajj with an Umrah and did not grant permission to anyone else to do so. They were the most knowledgeable about the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and what he did during his Hajj, more so than those who witnessed only a part of it.

[Machine] We announced the permission of Hajj to the companions of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ sincerely. He then mentioned the Hadith in which he said, "Ali ibn Abi Talib came to me from his journey, so the Prophet ﷺ said to him, 'Why did you permission, O Ali?' He said, 'I permissioned with what the Prophet ﷺ permissioned with.' He said, 'So sacrifice and stay in Haram as you are.'"

[Machine] I heard Abu Musa Al-Ash'ari saying: "I came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ while he was in Mina and he asked me, 'With what have you come to perform the ritual of Ihram?' I said, 'Labbaik (at your service), I have come to perform the ritual of Ihram as the Prophet ﷺ did.' He said, 'You have done well.' Then he ordered me to perform the Tawaf around the Ka'bah and to visit Safa and Marwa, and I did so, and it is mentioned in Sahih (authentic) narration."

This is Abdullah bin Abi Bakr bin Abdurrahman bin Al-Harith bin Hisham 9009. Abu Bakr Ahmad bin Al-Hasan Al-Qadi narrated it to us, Abu Al-Abbas Al-Asamm narrated it to him, Al-Rabi'i narrated it to him, Al-Shafi'i narrated it to him, Malik mentioned it, except that he said: "From 'An'An' and he said: "He commanded me to command my companions or those with me to raise their voices with the Talbiyah or with the Takbeer, he meant one of them."
[Machine] That the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: Gabriel came to me and commanded me to order my companions to raise their voices with the declaration of faith (Takbir) during the call to prayer, and also
[Machine] Jibreel (Gabriel) came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and said, "Command your companions to lower their voices during the Talbiyah (saying: Labbayk Allahumma Labbayk) as it is the slogan of Hajj." This was narrated to us by Abu Al-Hasan Muhammad bin Al-Husayn bin Dawud Al-Alawi, transcribed by Abu Hamid bin Ash-Sharqi. Muhammad bin Yahya Adh-Dhuhli narrated to us, who heard it from Abdul Razzaq, who narrated from Ath-Thawri, who narrated from Ibn Abi Labid, who narrated from Al-Muttalib bin Hantab, who mentioned it [narration number 9012]. And so forth.
[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Gabriel instructed me to raise my voice with the call to prayer, for it is one of the symbols of Hajj."
[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ passed by Wadi Al-Azraq and asked, "What valley is this?" They replied, "This is Wadi Al-Azraq." He said, "It is as if I am seeing Musa ﷺ coming down from the valley, with a neighbor to Allah, the Most High, making Tawaf around the Ka'bah. Then he came to Thaniyyat Harsh, and asked, "What is this pass?" They replied, "This is Thaniyyat Harsh." He said, "It is as if I am seeing Yunus ibn Matta riding a red, curly-haired camel, with a woolen cloak on him, and the bridle of his camel is a fibrous rope, and he is supplicating. Hushaim said..."
[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ was asked which action is best. He replied, "Feeding others and greeting them."
[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ was asked, "Which type of Hajj is the best?" He replied, "Hajj Al-'Azl and Hajj Al-Thajj."
[Machine] We went out with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and we did not reach Al-Rawha' until I heard the voices of the people performing the Talbiyah. Abu Hurairah said, "This (narration) is weak," and it was narrated by 'Umar ibn Suhban, who is also weak, from Abu Al-Zinad, from Anas ibn Malik.
12.75 [Machine] The following heading translates to English as: "Performing tawaf in all circumstances, and what is recommended to observe in it
“There is no (pilgrim) who recites the Talbiyah but that which is to his right and left also recites it, rocks and trees and hills, to the farthest ends of the earth in each direction, from here and from there.” (Using translation from Ibn Mājah 2921)
[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "No believer performs the Hajj except that his sins will disappear until he returns as he was when his mother gave birth to him." Abdullah bin Umar said: I asked Al-Thawri, "Where is your protector [for this narration]?" He replied, "The people of Kufa narrated it to us during the time of Abd al-Aziz." He said: And Aasim bin Umar narrated it to me from Aasim bin Ubaidullah, who narrated it from Abdullah bin Amr bin Rabia, from his father, from the Prophet ﷺ.
[Machine] Narrated by the Prophet ﷺ , "Whoever spends the day in Arafah until the sun sets will have their sins forgiven." Abu Muhammad Abdullah ibn Yusuf dictated to us, Abu Sa'id Ahmad ibn Muhammad ibn Ziyad in Makkah, Abu Yahya Muhammad ibn Sa'id ibn Ghaleb, Hammad ibn Khalid al-Khayyat, Asim ibn Umar, who mentioned it.
[Machine] He used to receive passengers, guests, and those who are lying down.
12.76 [Machine] Who preferred leaving the talbiyah during tawaf al-qudum, and on Safa and Marwa, and whoever sees it extensive
[Machine] Regarding the Prophet ﷺ during the standing on the two hills, there is a supplication and takbeer, and during the sa'i between them, there is a supplication. And I would prefer to do from this what was done, except that tawaf between them is disliked. The Sheikh said, and this is clear in the hadith of Jabir ibn Abdullah regarding the description of the Prophet's ﷺ Hajj.
[Machine] He then climbed on the elevated place of Safa and called out. So I said, "I have been forbidden from proclaiming the talbiyah (the pilgrimage chant)." He said, "But I am commanding you to do it." The talbiyah was a response to the call of Ibrahim ﷺ .
12.77 [Machine] How is the pilgrimage?
Ibn ‘Umar said Talbiyah uttered by the Apostle of Allaah ﷺ was Labbaik(always ready to obey), O Allaah labbaik, labbaik; Thou hast no partner, praise and grace are Thine, and the Dominion, Thou hast no partner. The narrator said ‘Abd Allaah bin ‘Umar used to add to his talbiyah Labbaik, labbaik, labbaik wa sa’daik(give me blessing after blessing) and good is Thy hands, desire and actions are directed towards Thee. (Using translation from Abū Dāʾūd 1812)
Here I am at Thy service, O Lord; here I am at Thy service: here I am at Thy service. There is no associate with Thee. Here I am at Thy service. All praise and grace is due to Thee and the sovereignty (too). There is no associate with Thee. They (the people) said that 'Abdullah b. 'Umar said that that was the Talbiya of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. Nafi' said: 'Abdullah (Allah be pleased with him) made this addition to it: Here I am at Thy service; here I am at Thy service; ready to obey Thee. The Good is in Thy Hand. Here I am at Thy service. Unto Thee is the petition and deed (is also for Thee). (Using translation from Muslim 1184b)
I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ pronouncing Talbiya with compacted hair: Here I am at Thy service. O Allah: here I am at Thy service; here I am at Thy service. There is no associate with Thee; here I am at Thy service. Verily all praise and grace is due to Thee and the Sovereignty (too). There is no associate with Thee; and he did not make any addition to these words. 'Abdullah b. 'Umar (Allah be pleased with them) (further) said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to offer two rak'ahs of prayer at Dhu'l-Hulaifa and then when his camel stood up with him on its back near the mosque at Dhu'l-Hulaifa, he pronounced these words (of Talbiya). And 'Abdullah b. 'Umar (Allah be pleased'with them) said that 'Umar b. Khattab (Allah be pleased with him) pronounced, the Talbiya of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ in these words of his (Prophet's words) and said: Here I am at Thy service, O Lord; here I am at Thy service, ready to obey Thee, and good is in Thy Hand, Here I am at Thy service. Unto Thee is the petition and deed (is also for Thee). (Using translation from Muslim 1184d)
[Machine] I know how the Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to respond to the call of "Labbaik Allahuma Labbaik, Labbaik La Shareeka Laka Labbaik, Innal Hamda Wan Ni'mata Laka".
I know how the Prophet ﷺ used to say (Talbiya) and it was: 'Labbaika Allahumma Labbaik, Labbaika la sharika Laka labbaik, Inna-l-hamda wan-ni'mata Laka walmu Lk, La sharika Laka'. (Using translation from Bukhārī 1550)
[Machine] Concerning the pilgrimage of the Prophet ﷺ , he mentioned the narration, saying, "So the Messenger of Allah ﷺ went out and we went out with him until his camel stood on the outskirts (of Medina) and he proclaimed the call of Tawheed (Oneness of Allah), saying, 'Here I am, O Allah, here I am. Here I am, there is no partner for You, here I am. Verily all praise, grace, and sovereignty are Yours, and there is no partner for You.' And the people would increase in such utterances and similar words, while the Prophet ﷺ would listen to them without saying anything to them."
[Machine] According to Jaabir ibn Abdullah, regarding the story of the pilgrimage of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ , he said, "The people responded, 'Labbaik, Labbaik, here we come, O the One who has roads (leading to His) praise-worthy qualities, and here we come, O the One who has abundant blessings.' And he did not criticize any of them for anything."
[Machine] He said, "It was from the response of the Messenger of Allah, ﷺ , when he said, 'Here I am, O Allah, answering the call of the True God,' and he informed us about it in the benefits of Abu al-Abbas." Then he said about Abu Hurayrah that he used to say, "From the response of the Messenger of Allah, ﷺ , 'Here I am, O Allah, answering the call of the True God, answering the call of the True God.'"
