12. Ḥajj and ʿUmrah (20/34)
[Machine] I heard Rafi' ibn 'Amr al-Muzani say, "I saw the Messenger of Allah ﷺ during the Farewell Pilgrimage delivering a sermon on a chestnut-colored camel." Abu Bakr al-Farisi informed us, narrating from Ibrahim ibn Abdullah al-Asbahani, who narrated from Abu Ahmad ibn Farris, who narrated from Muhammad ibn Ismail, who mentioned it.
12.227 [Machine] Preparation and delay in the work of Eid al-Adha
[Machine] That the Messenger of Allah ﷺ stood before the people during the Farewell Pilgrimage and they asked him questions. Then a man came to him and said, "O Messenger of Allah, I did not sense it, so I slaughtered before throwing (the pebbles)." He said, "Throw and there is no harm." And another man said, "O Messenger of Allah, I did not sense it, so I shaved my head before slaughtering." He said, "Slaughter and there is no harm." It was not reported that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ was asked about anything that was done early or delayed except that he said, "Do it and there is no harm." This is the wording of the Hadith of Ibn Wahb and the Hadith of Al-Shafi'i and Yahya ibn Said something similar to it, except that they mentioned that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ stood in Arafat during the Farewell Pilgrimage and the people asked him there, and they mentioned the question about shaving the head before the question about slaughtering.
[Machine] A man asked the Prophet ﷺ and said, "O Messenger of Allah, I slaughtered before throwing (stones during Hajj). He said, 'Throw and there is no harm.' Another man said, 'I shaved before slaughtering.' He said, 'Slaughter and there is no harm.' Abu Bakr then said, 'I heard Sufyan being asked about this hadith, and Buhlul said to him, 'This is what you have memorized from Az-Zuhri, O Abu Muhammad?' He said, 'Yes, it is as if you hear it, except that he used to narrate it in a longer form. So this is what I have memorized from him.' Buhlul then said to Sufyan, 'Indeed, Abdur-Rahman ibn Mahdi said that you told him you did not memorize it.' Sufyan said, 'Abdur-Rahman ibn Mahdi speaks the truth. I did not memorize it in its entirety. As for this, I have mastered it."
[Machine] I saw the Messenger of Allah, ﷺ , riding his she-camel when a man approached him and said, "O Messenger of Allah, I thought that shaving the head (halq) comes before the throwing of the pebbles (ramy), so I shaved my head before I threw the pebbles." The Prophet said, "Go ahead and throw, there is no harm." Then another man came and said, "O Messenger of Allah, I thought that shaving the head (halq) comes before the slaughtering (nahr), so I shaved my head before I slaughtered the animal." The Prophet said, "Go ahead and slaughter, there is no harm." He was not asked about anything that someone had done before or after, except that he said, "Do it and there is no harm." And such was his response to all inquiries.
As Messenger of Allah (may peace be'upon him) was standing near the jamra, a person came to him on the Day of Nahr and said: Messenger of Allah, I got (my head shaved) before throwing pebbles, whereupon he (the Holy Prophet) said: Throw pebbles (now) ; there is no harm in it. Another man (then) came and said: I have sacrificed before throwing the stones. He said: Throw stones (now) and there is no harm. Another came to him and said: I have observed the circumambulation of Ifada of the House before throwing pebbles. He said: Throw pebbles (now) ; there is no harm in it, He (the narrator) said: I did not see that he (the Holy Prophet) was asked about anything on that day, but he said: Do, and there is no harm in it. (Using translation from Muslim 1306h)
[Machine] It was said to the Prophet ﷺ regarding slaughtering, shaving the head, stoning, and matters of precedence and delay, and he replied, "There is no objection."
[Machine] It was narrated that the Prophet ﷺ was asked during the Farewell Pilgrimage. It was said, "O Messenger of Allah, I sacrificed (an animal) before throwing the pebbles." So he gestured with his hand and said, "There is no harm." And a man said, "I shaved my head before sacrificing (the animal)." And he gestured with his hand and said, "There is no harm." So on that day, no one was asked about anything related to advancing or delaying except that he gestured with his hand and said, "There is no harm."
[Machine] He said: A man asked the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, and he said: "I have shaved before slaughtering." He said: "There is no harm." Then another person said: " I have thrown pebbles (for stoning) after Maghrib." He said: "There is no harm." I did not ask him anything that day except that he said: "There is no harm." And he did not command anything from expiation. This is a sound chain of narration.
[Machine] That the Prophet ﷺ was asked about someone who shaved before slaughtering, or something similar, and he said, "There is no harm, no harm."
[Machine] A man came to the Prophet ﷺ and said, "I have slaughtered before throwing (stones at the pillars during Hajj)." He said, "Throw and there is no harm." Another man said, "I shaved before slaughtering." He said, "Slaughter and there is no harm."
[Machine] That the Messenger of Allah ﷺ threw (the pebbles) and then sat down for the people. A man came to him and said, "O Messenger of Allah, I have shaved my head before sacrificing." He said, "There is no harm." Then another man came to him and said, "I have shaved my head before throwing (the pebbles)." He said, "There is no harm." He was not asked about anything except that he said, "There is no harm."
[Machine] The Prophet ﷺ was asked about a man who performed acts out of order, such as throwing before shaving his head, shaving before throwing, and sacrificing before shaving. The Prophet ﷺ said, "Go ahead and do it, there is no problem." Abu Amr Al-Adib informed us, Abu Bakr Al-Isma'ili informed me, Al-Qasim narrated to me, Muhammad ibn Ishaq told me, Yahya ibn Ishaq narrated to me, Hammad ibn Salama narrated to me. Al-Bukhari also mentioned the narration of Hammad.
[Machine] You missed the sunnah, and there is nothing on you.
[Machine] The Prophet ﷺ said, "Whoever advances or delays any of his rituals, then there is no blame upon him."
12.228 [Machine] The overflow of circumambulation
[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ departed on the Day of Sacrifice and then returned to pray the noon prayer in Mina. Nafi' said that Ibn Umar used to depart on the Day of Sacrifice and then return to pray the noon prayer in Mina, and it is mentioned that the Prophet ﷺ also did this.
[Machine] In the Prophet's ﷺ Hajj, he then proceeded to the Kaaba and performed the Dhuhr prayer in Makkah.
The Prophet ﷺ postponed the circumambulation on the day of sacrifice till the night. (Using translation from Abū Dāʾūd 2000)
[Machine] On the day of sacrifice, the Prophet ﷺ postponed the Tawaf until night, and Abu Al-Zubair heard from Ibn Abbas, and in his hearing from Aisha, a glance. Al-Bukhari reported it, and it has been narrated in the hadith of Abu Salamah that Aisha said, "We performed Hajj with the Prophet ﷺ, and we arrived on the day of sacrifice 9637." And Muhammad ibn Ishaq ibn Yasir narrated from Abdul Rahman ibn Al-Qasim, from his father, from Aisha, that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ performed Tawaf from the end of his day when he prayed Dhuhr, then he returned to Mina.
[Machine] The Prophet ﷺ gave permission to his companions to visit the house on the day of sacrifice in the afternoon, and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ visited with his wives at night. Abu Al-Husayn Ibn Bashran informed us, Abu Ja'far Al-Razaz narrated to us, Hasan Ibn Mukram narrated to us, Al-Harith Ibn Mansur Al-Wasiti narrated to us, mentioning him [Umru Ibn Qays].
[Machine] The Prophet of Allah ﷺ performed the Tawaf (circumambulation) of the Kaaba on the day of sacrifice during the night. Mas'ar reported from Jabir, and Mujahid reported something similar. And Urwah ibn Zubayr narrated that the Prophet ﷺ performed the Tawaf on his camel at night. The most authentic of these narrations is the hadith of Nafi' from Ibn Umar, and the hadith of Jabir, and the hadith of Abu Salama from Aisha. And Allah knows best.
[Machine] As for Ibrahim, ﷺ , he came to his house from Mina and stayed there until morning. Then, when the sun rose, he went to his house from Arafah and stood there until the sun set. And when it was time for the Prayer of Mu'ajjilah, he stood until it was time for the Prayer of Musfirah, and that is the religion of your father Ibrahim, ﷺ . And your Prophet, may ﷺ , has been commanded to follow him. And Abu Al-Hassan informed us that Al-Hassan informed us that Yusuf informed us that Sulaiman ibn Harb informed us that Yazid ibn Ibrahim informed us that Abdullah ibn Abu Mulaykah informed us from Abdullah ibn Amr that he mentioned the Hadith in a similar manner. Then he stood up for the Morning Prayer, and Allah, may He be praised, revealed to His Prophet, may ﷺ , {Follow the religion of Ibrahim, a Hanif, and he was not of the polytheists} [Surah An-Nahl 123].
[Machine] Gabriel ﷺ led Abraham ﷺ to Mina to pray Dhuhr, Asr, Maghrib, Isha, and Fajr. Then, he went from Mina to Arafat and prayed the two prayers there, then he stood until the sun set. After that, he came to Muzdalifah and stayed there for the night, then he prayed there, meaning Fajr, as quickly as any Muslim would pray. Then, he stood there as slowly as any Muslim would pray. Then, he sent him back to Mina, where he threw the pebbles, slaughtered the animal, and shaved his head. Then, Allah revealed to Muhammad ﷺ "Follow the religion of Ibrahim, being upright, and he was not of the polytheists." [Surah An-Nahl 123]. Abu al-Hasan al-Muqri narrated to us, Hassan narrated, Yusuf narrated, Muhammad ibn Ubayd narrated, Muhammad ibn Thawr narrated, from Ma'mar, who said: Muhammad ibn Abdur Rahman ibn Abi Layla narrated to me with the same chain of transmission. Then, he shaved his head, and Gabriel led him to the Kaaba, where Allah said to His Prophet, "Then We revealed to you, [O Muhammad], to follow the religion of Ibrahim, inclining toward truth; and he was not of the polytheists." [Surah An-Nahl 123].

[Machine] From Ibn Abi Layla, who mentioned it with his chain of narration, and its meaning is attributed to the Prophet ﷺ: He (the Prophet) added to it, then he brought it to the Kaaba, (circled) around it, and then returned with it to Mina, where he stayed for those days. Then Allah revealed to Muhammad ﷺ {Follow the way of Ibrahim, inclining toward truth, and he was not of the polytheists} [An-Nahl 123]. And the most correct opinion is that it is stopped (i.e., the narration is not directly attributed to the Prophet).

[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Indeed, the tawaf around the Kaaba, the sa'i between Safa and Marwa, and the stoning of the pillars (during Hajj rituals) were only prescribed for the remembrance of Allah." This narration was reported by Sufyan from Abu Qutaybah, but he did not elevate it. It was also narrated by Yahya al-Qattan from Ubaidullah, but he did not elevate it. He said, "I heard it, but I hesitate regarding it." It was also narrated by Abdullah ibn Dawud and Abu Asim from Ubaidullah, and they elevated it. Ibn Abi Malikah also narrated it from Qasim, who narrated it from Aisha, but he did not elevate it. It was also narrated by Husayn al-Mualim from Ata, who narrated it from Aisha, but he did not elevate it.

[Machine] In it, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ performed the Tawaf when he arrived in Mecca. He first touched the corner then made three circuits of the seven, and walked four circuits. Then he prayed two units of prayer when he finished his Tawaf at the Station (Maqam Ibrahim), then he offered his salutations and left. He came to Safa and performed the Sa'y between Safa and Marwa seven times. Then he did not deconsecrate anything that was prohibited until he completed his Hajj and sacrificed his offering on the Day of Sacrifice. Then he performed Tawaf around the Kaaba and then deconsecrated everything that was restricted. He did the same actions as the Messenger of Allah ﷺ did.

I said, 'O Messenger of Allah, she is menstruating.' He asked, 'Is she restraining us?' We replied, 'O Messenger of Allah, she has already finished her menstruation on the Day of Sacrifice.' He said, 'Bring her out.'"

[Machine] I went with the Prophet ﷺ for Hajj, and people would come to him. One of them said, "O Messenger of Allah, I performed Sa'i (between Safa and Marwa) before performing Tawaf or did something before it, or I went ahead of something." He would say to them, "There is no problem, there is no problem, except for a man who borrows an item from a Muslim and he is an oppressor, then the one who caused the problem and led him to destruction." The Sheikh said, "This statement 'I performed Sa'i before Tawaf' is strange and specific to Jarir from Al-Shaybani. If it is preserved, it is as if he asked him about a man who performed the back Tawaf before performing the initial Tawaf, and he said, 'There is no problem, and Allah knows best.'"

[Machine] About the scholars who adhere to the statement of the people of Madinah, they used to say, "Whoever forgets to discharge (the obligations of Hajj) until he returns to his homeland, it is prohibited (for him) to mention it (perform Hajj) until he returns to the (Ka'bah) House and circumambulates it. If he has wives, he should give a sacrificial offering."

[Machine] The Prophet of Allah ﷺ used to visit the House (Kaaba) every night as long as he was in Mina. He (May Allah be pleased with him) said, "I have not seen anyone who walks upon it". The sheikh narrated from At-Thawri in Al-Jami 'from Ibn Tawus that the Prophet ﷺ used to pour water every night, meaning the nights of Mina.

[Machine] Narrated by Jabir about the story of the Prophet's ﷺ Hajj, he said: Then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ went to the Ka'bah and prayed Dhuhr in Makkah. Then he came to the Banu Abd Al-Muttalib while they were drawing water from Zamzam. He said, "Remove the Banu Abd Al-Muttalib. If it weren't for the fear that people would overpower you in distributing water, I would have helped you." So they handed him a bucket and he drank from it.

Messenger of Allah ﷺ came to the drinking place and asked for water. Al-Abbas said, "O Fadl! Go to your mother and bring water from her for Messenger of Allah ﷺ ." Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Give me water to drink." Al-Abbas said, "O Messenger of Allah ﷺ! The people put their hands in it." Messenger of Allah ﷺ again said, 'Give me water to drink. So, he drank from that water and then went to the Zamzam (well) and there the people were offering water to the others and working at it (drawing water from the well). The Prophet ﷺ then said to them, "Carry on! You are doing a good deed." Then he said, "Were I not afraid that other people would compete with you (in drawing water from Zamzam), I would certainly take the rope and put it over this (i.e. his shoulder) (to draw water)." On saying that the Prophet ﷺ pointed to his shoulder. (Using translation from Bukhārī 1635)

While I was sitting along with Ibn 'Abbas (Allah be pleased with him) near the Ka'ba, there came a bedouin to him and said: What is the matter that I see that the progeny of your uncle supply honey and milk (as drink to the travellers), whereas you supply al-nabidh (water sweetened with dates)? Is it due to your poverty or due to your close-fistedness? Thereupon Ibn 'Abbas said: Allah be praised, it is neither due to poverty nor due to close-fistedness (but due to the fact) that Allah's Apostle ﷺ came here riding his she-came, and there was sitting behind him Usama. He asked for water, and we gave him a cup full of nabidh and he drank it, and gave the remaining (part) to Usama; and he (the Holy Prophet) said: You have done Food, You have done well. So continue doing like it So we do not like to change what Messenger of Allah ﷺ had commanded us to do. (Using translation from Muslim 1316)

When you have finished, praise Allah, for the Prophet ﷺ said, "The distinction between us and the hypocrites is that they do not exhale from Zamzam." Abu Abdullah al-Hafiz informed us that Abu Sa'eed Ahmad ibn Ya'qub al-Thaqafi narrated to us that Ahmad ibn Yahya al-Hulwani informed us that Muhammad ibn al-Sabbah narrated to us that Isma'il ibn Zakariyya reported from Uthman ibn al-Aswad, from Ibn Abi Mulaikah, who said: A man came to Ibn Abbas and said to him, "Where did you come from?" He replied, "I drank from Zamzam," and he mentioned it similarly. Al-Fadl ibn Musa al-Sinani narrated it from Uthman ibn al-Aswad, from Abdur Rahman ibn Abi Mulaikah. Abu Abdullah al-Hafiz informed us that Abu Bakr Ahmad ibn Hamdan al-Sairafi narrated to us, that Abdul Samad ibn al-Fadl narrated to us, that Makkii ibn Ibrahim narrated to us, that Uthman ibn al-Aswad reported from Muhammad ibn Abdul Rahman, who said: A man came to Ibn Abbas and mentioned something similar to him.

After that, he made Tawaf around the House with his companion, and offered the prayer. When he completed his prayer, Abu Dharr said, 'So I came to him and I was the first one to greet him with the greeting of Islam. He replied, 'And upon you and the mercy of Allah.' Then he mentioned the Hadith in which he said, 'When did you come here?' I replied, 'I came here thirty nights and a day ago.' He said, 'Who has been feeding you?' I said, 'I had no food except Zamzam water, so I have gained weight until my stomach became large and I have not felt any weakness or hunger in my liver.' The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, 'Verily, it is blessed, it is food that nourishes and heals sickness.'"

The Messenger of Allah ﷺ performed the obligatory circumambulation of the Ka'bah at the end of the day of sacrifice after he had offered the noon prayer. He hen returned to Mina and stayed there during the tashriq days and he threw pebbles at the jamrahs when the sun declined. He threw seven pebbles at each of the jamrahs, uttering the takbir (Allah is most great) at the time of the throwing the pebble. He stood at the first and the second jamrah, and prolonged his standing there, making supplications with humilation. He threw pebbles at the third jamrah but did not stand there.

Ibn ʿUmar used to do Rami of the Jamrat-ud-Dunya (the Jamra near to the Khaif mosque) with seven small stones and used to recite Takbir on throwing every pebble. He then would go ahead till he reached the level ground where he would stand facing the Qibla for a long time to invoke (Allah) while raising his hands (while invoking). Then he would do Rami of the Jamrat-ul-Wusta (middle Jamra) and then he would go to the left towards the middle ground, where he would stand facing the Qibla. He would remain standing there for a long period to invoke (Allah) while raising his hands, and would stand there for a long period. Then he would do Rami of the Jamrat-ul-Aqaba from the middle of the valley, but he would not stay by it, and then he would leave and say, "I saw the Prophet ﷺ doing like this." 12.233 [Machine] Who Doubts the Number of Throws
[Machine] "I threw the pebble without knowing if I threw it six or seven times. He said, 'Go to that man, he wants Ali.' (Ali) went to him and asked him about it. He said, 'If I had done something wrong in my prayer, I would have repeated it.' So he came back and informed him (the Imam) about it. The sheikh said, 'Abu al-Hasan (Ali) is truthful.' The sheikh said, 'And it seems that he intends, and Allah knows best, to repeat the suspicious act. Similarly, in stoning, one should repeat the act if there is doubt about it. It has been mentioned in the book of prayer, the hadith of Abu Sa'id and others, narrating from the Prophet ﷺ regarding building on certainty. And success is from Allah.'"

[Machine] Saad bin Malik: We returned during the Hajj of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, and some of us said, "I have performed the stoning of six (Jamaar), and some of us said, "I have performed the stoning of seven." This did not concern or criticize some of us towards others.

[Machine] He (the Prophet Muhammad) said: A man asked the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and said, "I shaved (my head) before slaughtering (the animal)." He (the Prophet) said, "There is no harm." Then another man said, "I threw the stones (during Hajj) after Maghrib (evening prayer)." He (the Prophet) said, "There is no harm." [Machine] Throw the pebbles at the Jamrat until the sun sets from tomorrow morning. It was narrated by Thawri from a man from Nafi' who said: Ibn 'Umar said, "If you forget to throw the pebbles on the day of sacrifice until the night, then throw them at night. And if the next day comes and you forget the Jamrat until the night, then do not throw it until the sun sets from tomorrow. Then throw the first one, then the first one."
