[Machine] "We entered upon Muawiyah and the caller for prayer called out, 'Allahu Akbar, Allahu Akbar.' Muawiyah said the same and then said, 'I bear witness that there is no god but Allah.' He repeated this statement and then said, 'I bear witness that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah.' He also repeated this statement. Then he said, 'This is how I heard the Messenger of Allah, ﷺ , saying.'"  

دَخَلْنَا عَلَى مُعَاوِيَةَ فَنَادَى الْمُنَادِي لِلصَّلَاةِ فَقَالَ اللهُ أَكْبَرُ اللهُ أَكْبَرُ فَقَالَ مُعَاوِيَةُ كَمَا قَالَ فَقَالَ أَشْهَدُ أَنْ لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا اللهُ فَقَالَ مِثْلَ ذَلِكَ أَيْضًا فَقَالَ أَشْهَدُ أَنَّ مُحَمَّدًا رَسُولُ اللهِ فَقَالَ مِثْلَ ذَلِكَ ثُمَّ قَالَ «هَكَذَا سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ يَقُولُ»  

[Machine] "I witnessed Uthman delivering a sermon while standing on the pulpit, and I witnessed Muawiya delivering a sermon while sitting. He said, 'Indeed, I am not ignorant of the Sunnah, but my age has advanced, my bones have weakened, and my needs have multiplied. So, I wanted to fulfill some of your needs while I am sitting, and then I will stand and take my share of the Sunnah.'"  

شَهِدْتُ عُثْمَانَ يَخْطُبُ عَلَى الْمِنْبَرِ قَائِمًا وَشَهِدْتُ مُعَاوِيَةَ يَخْطُبُ قَاعِدًا فَقَالَ «أَمَا إِنِّي لَمْ أَجْهَلِ السُّنَّةَ وَلَكِنِّي كَبِرَتْ سِنِّي وَرَقَّ عَظْمِي وَكَثُرَتْ حَوَائِجُكُمْ فَأَرَدْتُ أَنْ أَقْضِيَ بَعْضَ حَوَائِجِكُمْ وَأَنَا قَاعِدٌ ثُمَّ أَقُومَ فَآخُذَ نَصِيبِي مِنَ السُّنَّةِ»  

[Machine] "Listen to me, O nephew, I heard this narration from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ . I testify that I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ saying, 'Talhah is one of those who fulfilled his pledge.'"  

اصغِ عِنْدِي حَدِيثٌ يَا ابْنَ أَخِي سَمِعْتُهُ مِنْ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ أَشْهَدُ لَسَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ يَقُولُ «طَلْحَةُ مِمَّنْ قَضَى نَحْبَهُ»  

[Machine] He saw Muawiyah giving a sermon on the pulpit and in his hand was a piece of poetry. He said, "Where are your scholars, O people of the city? I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ forbidding such things and he said, 'The Children of Israel were only punished when they adopted such practices with their wives.'"  

أَنَّهُ رَأَى مُعَاوِيَةَ يَخْطُبُ عَلَى الْمِنْبَرِ وَفِي يَدِهِ قُصَّةٌ مِنَ الشَّعْرِ قَالَ فَسَمِعْتُهُ يَقُولُ أَيْنَ عُلَمَاؤُكُمْ يَا أَهْلَ الْمَدِينَةِ؟ سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ يَنْهَى عَنْ مِثْلِ هَذَا وَقَالَ «إِنَّمَا عُذِّبَتْ بَنُو إِسْرَائِيلَ حِينَ اتَّخَذَتْ هَذِهِ نِسَاؤُهُمْ»  

[Machine] He heard Muawiyah bin Abu Sufyan, who had a piece of hair in his hand, saying, "I bear witness that I saw the Messenger of Allah ﷺ forbidding such a thing, and he said, 'The Children of Israel were only punished when they took their women as such.'"  

أَنَّهُ سَمِعَ مُعَاوِيَةَ بْنَ أَبِي سُفْيَانَ وَفِي يَدَهِ قُصَّةٌ مِنْ شَعْرٍ يَقُولُ شَهِدْتُ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ يَنْهَى عَنْ مِثْلِ هَذَا وَيَقُولُ «إِنَّمَا عُذِّبَتْ بَنُو إِسْرَائِيلَ حِينَ اتَّخَذَتْ نِسَاؤُهُمْ هَذِهِ»  

[Machine] Al-Qa'nabi narrated from Malik and Bakr ibn Sahl narrated from Abdullah ibn Yusuf, I am Malik. Abu Yazid al-Qaratisi narrated from Abdullah ibn Abd al-Hakam, who narrated from Malik, that Ibn Shihab narrated from Humaid ibn Abd al-Rahman that he heard Mu'awiyah ibn Abi Sufyan in the year of Hajj while he was on the pulpit and he recited a poem that was in the hand of Harasi. He said, "O people of Madinah, where are your scholars? I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ forbidding such things and saying, 'Indeed, the Children of Israel were destroyed when their women engaged in these practices.'" And the wording for this hadith is attributed to al-Qa'nabi.  

ثنا الْقَعْنَبِيُّ عَنْ مَالِكٍ وَحَدَّثَنَا بَكْرُ بْنُ سَهْلٍ ثنا عَبْدُ اللهِ بْنُ يُوسُفَ أَنَا مَالِكٌ ح وَحَدَّثَنَا أَبُو يَزِيدَ الْقَرَاطِيسِيُّ ثنا عَبْدُ اللهِ بْنُ عَبْدِ الْحَكَمِ ثنا مَالِكٌ عَنِ ابْنِ شِهَابٍ عَنْ حُمَيْدِ بْنِ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ أَنَّهُ سَمِعَ مُعَاوِيَةَ بْنَ أَبِي سُفْيَانَ عَامَ حَجَّ وَهُوَ عَلَى الْمِنْبَرِ وَتَنَاوَلَ قُصَّةً مِنْ شَعْرٍ كَانَتْ فِي يَدِ حَرَسِيٍّ وَهُوَ يَقُولُ يَا أَهْلَ الْمَدِينَةِ أَيْنَ عُلَمَاؤُكُمْ؟ سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ يَنْهَى عَنْ مِثْلِ هَذِهِ وَيَقُولُ «إِنَّمَا» هَلَكَتْ بَنُو إِسْرَائِيلَ حِينَ اتَّخَذَ هَذِهِ نِسَاؤُهُمْ «» وَاللَّفْظُ لِحَدِيثِ الْقَعْنَبِيِّ  

That he heard Mu'awiyah b. Abi Sufyan say during the Hajj when he was on the pulpit and took a lock of hair which was in the hand of the guard, saying: O people of Medina, where are your scholars ? I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ forbidding such a think as this and said: The children of Isra'il perished when their women practised it. (Using translation from Abū Dāʾūd 4167)  

سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ يَنْهَى عَنْ مِثْلِ هَذِهِ وَيَقُولُ «إِنَّمَا هَلَكَتْ بَنُو إِسْرَائِيلَ حِينَ اتَّخَذَهَا نِسَاؤُهُمْ»  

that in the year he performed Hajj. he heard Mu'awiya bin Abi Sufyan, who was on the pulpit and was taking a tuft of hair from one of his guards, saying, "Where are your religious learned men? I heard Messenger of Allah ﷺ forbidding this (false hair) and saying, 'The children of Israel were destroyed when their women started using this.'" (Using translation from Bukhārī 5932)  

سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ يَنْهَى عَنْ مِثْلِ هَذِهِ الْقُصَّةِ يَقُولُ «إِنَّمَا هَلَكَ بَنُو إِسْرَائِيلَ حِينَ اتَّخَذَهَا نِسَاؤُهُمْ»  

[Machine] I heard the Prophet ﷺ prohibiting something like this and saying, "The people of Israel were indeed punished when they adopted the same behavior with their wives."  

سَمِعْتُ النَّبِيَّ ﷺ يَنْهَى عَنْ مِثْلِ هَذَا وَيَقُولُ «إِنَّمَا عُذِّبَتْ بَنُو إِسْرَائِيلَ حِينَ اتَّخَذَتْ مِثْلَ هَذِهِ نِسَاؤُهُمْ»  

That he heard Mu'awiyah b. Abi Sufyan say during the Hajj when he was on the pulpit and took a lock of hair which was in the hand of the guard, saying: O people of Medina, where are your scholars ? I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ forbidding such a think as this and said: The children of Isra'il perished when their women practised it. (Using translation from Abū Dāʾūd 4167)  

سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ يَنْهَى عَنْ مِثْلِ هَذَا وَيَقُولُ «إِنَّمَا هَلَكَ بَنُو إِسْرَائِيلَ حِينَ اتَّخَذَتْ هَذِهِ نِسَاؤُهُمْ»  

[Machine] Al-Qa'nabi narrated from Sufyan, from Az-Zuhri, from Humaid bin Abdul Rahman who said: Mu'awiyah came to Medina and he said, "Where are your scholars?" Then he pulled out a lock of hair from his beard and said, "I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ forbidding this, and he said, 'The people of Banu Isra'il were destroyed when their women started doing this.'"  

ثنا الْقَعْنَبِيُّ ثنا سُفْيَانُ عَنِ الزُّهْرِيِّ عَنْ حُمَيْدِ بْنِ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ قَالَ قَدِمَ مُعَاوِيَةُ الْمَدِينَةَ فَقَالَ أَيْنَ عُلَمَاؤُكُمْ؟ وَأَخْرَجَ كُبَّةً مِنْ شَعْرٍ مِنْ كُمِّهِ فَقَالَ سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ يَنْهَى عَنْ هَذَا وَقَالَ «إِنَّمَا هَلَكَ بَنُو إِسْرَائِيلَ حِينَ اتَّخَذَ نِسَاؤُهُمْ مِثْلَ هَذَا»  

[Machine] He heard Muawiyah giving a sermon saying, "O people of the city, where are your scholars? I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say, 'This is the day of Ashura, and its fasting is not obligatory upon us. So whoever among you wants to fast, let them fast, for indeed I am fasting.' So the people fasted."  

أَنَّهُ سَمِعَ مُعَاوِيَةَ يَخْطُبُ يَقُولُ يَا أَهْلَ الْمَدِينَةِ أَيْنَ عُلَمَاؤُكُمْ؟ سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ يَقُولُ «هَذَا يَوْمُ عَاشُورَاءَ وَلَمْ يُفْرَضْ عَلَيْنَا صِيَامُهُ فَمَنْ شَاءَ مِنْكُمْ أَنْ يَصُومَ فَلْيَصُمْ فَإِنِّي صَائِمٌ» فَصَامَ النَّاسُ  

[Machine] Al-Qa'nabi narrated from Malik that Bakr bin Sahl narrated from Abdullah bin Yusuf that I (Malik) narrated from Abu Yazid al-Qaratisi that Abdullah bin Abd al-Hakam narrated from Ibn Shihab, from Humeid bin Abdul Rahman, that he heard Muawiyah on the day of Ashura during the year of Hajj, while he was on the pulpit, saying, "O people of Madinah, where are your scholars? I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ saying, 'Indeed, this day is the day of Ashura and it is not obligatory upon you to fast, and I am fasting. So whoever wants to fast may fast, and whoever wants to break his fast may break it.'"  

ثنا الْقَعْنَبِيُّ عَنْ مَالِكٍ وَحَدَّثَنَا بَكْرُ بْنُ سَهْلٍ ثنا عَبْدُ اللهِ بْنُ يُوسُفَ أَنَا مَالِكٌ ح وَحَدَّثَنَا أَبُو يَزِيدَ الْقَرَاطِيسِيُّ ثنا عَبْدُ اللهِ بْنُ عَبْدِ الْحَكَمِ أَنَا مَالِكٌ عَنِ ابْنِ شِهَابٍ عَنْ حُمَيْدِ بْنِ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ أَنَّهُ سَمِعَ مُعَاوِيَةَ يَوْمَ عَاشُورَاءَ عَامَ حَجَّ وَهُوَ عَلَى الْمِنْبَرِ يَقُولُ يَا أَهْلَ الْمَدِينَةِ أَيْنَ عُلَمَاؤُكُمْ؟ سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ يَقُولُ «إِنَّ» هَذَا الْيَوْمَ يَوْمُ عَاشُورَاءَ وَلَمْ يُكْتَبْ عَلَيْكُمْ صِيَامُهُ وَأَنَا صَائِمٌ فَمَنْ شَاءَ فَلْيَصُمْ وَمَنْ شَاءَ فَلْيُفْطِرْ  

[Machine] Al-Qa'nabi narrated that Sufyan said, on the authority of Al-Zuhri, who narrated from Humaid bin Abdul Rahman, he said, "Muawiyah came to Medina and asked, 'Where are your scholars? Indeed, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to fast on this day.'" He then said, "I am fasting, so whoever wishes to fast, let them do so, and whoever wishes to break their fast, let them do so." Referring to the day of Ashura.  

ثنا الْقَعْنَبِيُّ قَالَا ثنا سُفْيَانُ عَنِ الزُّهْرِيِّ عَنْ حُمَيْدِ بْنِ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ قَالَ قَدِمَ مُعَاوِيَةُ الْمَدِينَةَ فَقَالَ أَيْنَ عُلَمَاؤُكُمْ؟ إِنَّ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ كَانَ فِي هَذَا الْيَوْمِ فَقَالَ «إِنِّي صَائِمٌ فَمَنْ شَاءَ فَلْيَصُمْ وَمَنْ شَاءَ فَلْيُفْطِرْ» يَعْنِي يَوْمَ عَاشُورَاءَ  

[Machine] I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ saying, "This day, the day of Ashura, is not obligatory for you to fast. But I am fasting, so whoever wishes may fast on this day," referring to the day of Ashura.  

سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ يَقُولُ هَذَا اليَوْمُ يَوْمُ عَاشُورَاءَ وَلَمْ يُكْتَبْ عَلَيْكُمْ صِيَامُهُ وَأَنَا صَائِمٌ فَمَنْ أَحَبَّ فَلْيَصُمْهُ يَعْنِي يَوْمَ عَاشُورَاءَ  

[Machine] I heard the Messenger of Allah, may ﷺ , saying, "This is the day of Ashura and fasting is not obligatory upon you. However, I am fasting, so whoever among you wants to fast, they may fast, and whoever wants to break their fast, they may break it."  

سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ يَقُولُ «هَذَا يَوْمُ عَاشُورَاءَ وَلَمْ يُكْتَبْ عَلَيْكُمْ صِيَامُهُ وَإِنِّي صَائِمٌ فَمَنْ أَحَبَّ أَنْ يَصُومَهُ فَلْيَصُمْهُ وَمَنْ أَحَبَّ أَنْ يُفْطِرَ فَلْيُفْطِرْ»  

[Machine] He informed him that he heard Muawiya while he was preaching to the people on the day of Ashura, saying: "O people of the city, where are your scholars? Indeed, I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ saying, 'This is the day of Ashura, and it is not obligatory for you to fast it, but indeed I am fasting.' And he said that, 'So whoever among you wishes to fast, let him fast, and whoever wishes to break his fast, let him break it.'"  

أَخْبَرَهُ أَنَّهُ سَمِعَ مُعَاوِيَةَ وَهُوَ يَخْطُبُ لِلنَّاسِ يَوْمَ عَاشُورَاءَ وَهُوَ يَقُولُ يَا أَهْلَ الْمَدِينَةِ أَيْنَ عُلَمَاؤُكُمْ؟ إِنِّي سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ يَقُولُ «هَذَا يَوْمُ عَاشُورَاءَ وَلَمْ يُكْتَبْ عَلَيْكُمْ صِيَامُهُ وَإِنِّي صَائِمٌ» وَهُوَ يَقُولُ ذَلِكَ «فَمَنْ أَحَبَّ مِنْكُمْ أَنْ يَصُومَهُ فَلْيَصُمْ وَمَنْ أَحَبَّ أَنْ يُفْطِرَ فَلْيُفْطِرْ»  

That he heard Muawiya bin Abi Sufyan on the day of 'Ashura' during the year he performed the Hajj, saying on the pulpit, "O the people of Medina! Where are your Religious Scholars? I heard Allah's Apostle saying, 'This is the day of 'Ashura'. Allah has not enjoined its fasting on you but I am fasting it. You have the choice either to fast or not to fast (on this day).' " (Using translation from Bukhārī 2003)  

سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ يَقُولُ «هَذَا يَوْمُ عَاشُورَاءَ وَلَمْ يُكْتَبْ عَلَيْكُمْ صِيَامُهُ وَأَنَا صَائِمٌ فَمَنْ شَاءَ فَلْيَصُمْ وَمَنْ شَاءَ فَلْيُفْطِرْ»  

[Machine] I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ saying: "I am just a distributor, and it is Allah who gives."  

سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ يَقُولُ «إِنَّمَا أَنَا قَاسِمٌ وَيُعْطِي اللهُ»  

[Machine] I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say, "Indeed, I am just a distributor, and it is Allah who gives."  

سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ يَقُولُ «إِنَّمَا أَنَا قَاسِمٌ وَيُعْطِي اللهُ»  

[Machine] I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ saying, "Indeed, I am only a distributor, and it is Allah who gives."  

سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ يَقُولُ «إِنَّمَا أَنَا قَاسِمٌ وَيُعْطِي اللهُ»  

I heard Messenger of Allah ﷺ saying, "If Allah wants to do good to a person, He makes him comprehend the religion. I am just a distributor, but the grant is from Allah. (And remember) that this nation (true Muslims) will keep on following Allah's teachings strictly and they will not be harmed by any one going on a different path till Allah's order (Day of Judgment) is established." (Using translation from Bukhārī 71)  

سَمِعْتُ النَّبِيَّ ﷺ يَقُولُ «مَنْ يُرِدِ اللهُ بِهِ خَيْرًا يُفَقِّهْهُ فِي الدِّينِ»  

[Machine] And what is that? They said, "You prayed two units and Uthman prayed four." He said, "I prayed with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ two units." So they continued with it until he left and prayed four units.  

وَمَا ذَاكَ؟ قَالُوا صَلَّيْتَ رَكْعَتَيْنِ وَعُثْمَانُ صَلَّى أَرْبَعًا قَالَ «صَلَّيْتُ مَعَ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ رَكْعَتَيْنِ» فَلَمْ يَزَالُوا بِهِ حَتَّى خَرَجَ فَصَلَّى أَرْبَعًا  

[Machine] I heard the Messenger of Allah, ﷺ , saying when he was building the Mosque for Ammar, "Indeed, you are eager for jihad and indeed you are among the people of Paradise, and a rebellious group will kill you." He said, "Yes." He said, "Then why did you kill him?" He said, "By Allah, you will continue to deny that we have killed him. Only the one who brought him killed him."  

سَمِعْتَ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ يَقُولُ حِينَ كَانَ يَبْنِي الْمَسْجِدَ لِعَمَّارٍ «إِنَّكَ لَحَرِيصٌ عَلَى الْجِهَادِ وَإِنَّكَ لِمَنْ أَهْلِ الْجَنَّةِ وَلَتَقْتُلُكَ الْفِئَةُ الْبَاغِيَةُ» قَالَ بَلَى قَالَ فَلِمَ قَتَلْتُمُوهُ؟ قَالَ «وَاللهِ مَا تَزَالُ تَدْحَضُ فِي بَوْلِكَ أَنَحْنُ قَتَلْنَاهُ؟ إِنَّمَا قَتَلَهُ الَّذِي جَاءَ بِهِ»  

[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to Ammar, "The rebellious group will kill you."  

قَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ لِعَمَّارٍ «تَقْتُلُكَ الْفِئَةُ الْبَاغِيَةُ»  

[Machine] I was with Muawiyah after the Dhuhr prayer and saw people praying two extra units of prayer after it. He said, "What is this prayer? We prayed with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and we did not see anyone praying it."  

كُنْتُ عِنْدَ مُعَاوِيَةَ بَعْدَ صَلَاةِ الْعَصْرِ فَأَبْصَرَ نَاسًا يُصَلُّونَ بَعْدَهَا رَكْعَتَيْنِ فَقَالَ «مَا هَذِهِ الصَّلَاةُ؟ قَدْ صَلَّيْنَا مَعَ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ فَمَا رَأَيْنَا أَحَدًا يُصَلِّيهَا»  

[Machine] That the Prophet, ﷺ , used to "pray in only one garment."  

أَنَّ النَّبِيَّ ﷺ كَانَ «يُصَلِّي فِي الثَّوْبِ الْوَاحِدِ»  

[Machine] Muawiyah used to say, "I swear by Allah, I have never been intimidated while speaking to anyone as much as I have been intimidated by Aisha. And I have never heard her speak except that it reminded me of the words of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ."  

كَانَ مُعَاوِيَةُ يَقُولُ «وَاللهِ مَا هِبْتُ الْكَلَامَ عِنْدَ أَحَدٍ قَطُّ هَيْبَتِي عِنْدَ عَائِشَةَ وَمَا سَمِعْتُ كَلَامَهَا إِلَّا ذَكَرْتُ كَلَامَ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ»  

[Machine] That Mu'awiyah made someone say, "Do you know that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said about such and such?" They said, "Yes, he said that." He said, "Did he not talk about the matter of enjoying the Hajj and Umrah and forbid it?" Those who believe in the first hadith said, "No, by Allah, he did not say this and we do not know of it."  

أَنَّ مُعَاوِيَةَ جَعَلَ يَقُولُ لِبَعْضِ مَنْ حَضَرَ أَتَعْلَمُونَ أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ قَالَ فِي كَذَا كَذَا؟ قَالُوا بَلَى قَالَ «أَفَلَمْ يَقُلْ فِي شَأْنِ التَّمَتُّعِ بِالْحَجِّ وَالْعُمْرَةِ فَنَهَى عَنْهَا؟» قَالَ الَّذِينَ يُصَدِّقُونَ فِي الْحَدِيثِ الْأَوَّلِ لَا وَاللهِ مَا قَالَ هَذَا وَمَا عَلِمْنَاهُ قَالَ  

[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to the people, "If the imam prays while sitting, then all of you should pray while sitting." Al-Qasim said, "The people were amazed at the sincerity of Muawiyah."  

أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ قَالَ لِلنَّاسِ «إِنْ صَلَّى الْإِمَامُ جَالِسًا فَصَلُّوا جُلُوسًا» قَالَ الْقَاسِمُ «فَعَجِبَ النَّاسُ مِنْ صِدْقِ مُعَاوِيَةَ»  

[Machine] "This is a sunnah that I performed with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ , Abu Bakr, and Umar." They said, "Your cousin used to complete it in four." He replied, "I mentioned nothing except this."  

«هَذِهِ سُنَّةٌ صَلَّيْتُهَا مَعَ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ وَمَعَ أَبِي بَكْرٍ وَعُمَرَ ؓ» فَقَالَا كَانَ ابْنُ عَمِّكَ أَتَمَّهَا أَرْبَعًا فَقَالَ مَا ذَكَرْتُ إِلَّا هَذَا  

[Machine] "You used to perform a prayer that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ did not pray, and he used to forbid it." "He means the two rak'ahs after Asr prayer."  

«إِنَّكُمْ لَتُصَلُّونَ صَلَاةً مَا كَانَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ يُصَلِّيهَا وَلَقَدْ كَانَ يَنْهَى عَنْهَا» «يَعْنِي الرَّكْعَتَيْنِ بَعْدَ الْعَصْرِ»  

[Machine] Narrated by the Prophet ﷺ , "Whoever drinks alcoholic beverages, flog him." He repeated this three times and then said, "If they drink it for the fourth time, kill them."  

عَنِ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ قَالَ «مَنْ شَرِبَ الْخَمْرَ فَاجْلِدُوهُ» قَالَهَا ثَلَاثًا «فَإِذَا شَرِبُوا الرَّابِعَةَ فَاقْتُلُوهُمْ»  

[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "When someone drinks alcohol, flog them." He said during the fourth offense, "Kill them."  

أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ قَالَ «إِذَا شَرِبَ الْخَمْرَ فَاجْلِدُوهُ» قَالَ عِنْدَ الرَّابِعَةِ «فَاقْتُلُوهُ»  

[Machine] I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ saying, "Whoever dies without having allegiance (to a ruler) around his neck, dies the death of Jahiliyyah."  

سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ يَقُولُ «مَنْ مَاتَ وَلَيْسَ فِي عُنُقِهِ بَيْعَةٌ مَاتَ مَيْتَةً جَاهِلِيَّةً»  

[Machine] The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ used to say the same words as the Mu'adhin (the caller to prayer) when he heard him say "Allahu Akbar" (Allah is the greatest). And when the Mu'adhin said "Ashhadu an la ilaha illa Allah" (I bear witness that there is no god but Allah), the Prophet Muhammad would say the same words. And when the Mu'adhin said "Ashhadu anna Muhammadan Rasul Allah" (I bear witness that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah), the Prophet Muhammad would also say the same words.  

كَانَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ إِذَا سَمِعَ الْمُؤَذِّنَ يَقُولُ اللهُ أَكْبَرُ قَالَ مِثْلَ قَوْلِهِ فَإِذَا قَالَ أَشْهَدُ أَنْ لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا اللهُ قَالَ مِثْلَ قَوْلِهِ فَإِذَا قَالَ أَشْهَدُ أَنَّ مُحَمَّدًا رَسُولُ اللهِ مَرَّتَيْنِ قَالَ مِثْلَ قَوْلِهِ  

[Machine] "He heard the Prophet ﷺ saying, and Bilal was calling the adhan. When he said 'Allahu Akbar, Allahu Akbar', the Prophet of Allah said, 'Allahu Akbar, Allahu Akbar'. Then he said, 'Ashhadu an la ilaha illallah', the Prophet of Allah said, 'Ashhadu an la ilaha illallah'. Then he said, 'Ashhadu anna Muhammadan rasulullah', and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said the same. Then he remained silent."  

أَنَّهُ سَمِعَ النَّبِيَّ ﷺ يَقُولُ وَبِلَالٌ يُؤَذِّنُ فَلَمَّا قَالَ اللهُ أَكْبَرُ اللهُ أَكْبَرُ قَالَ نَبِيُّ اللهِ «اللهُ أَكْبَرُ اللهُ أَكْبَرُ» ثُمَّ قَالَ أَشْهَدُ أَنْ لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا اللهُ قَالَ نَبِيُّ اللهِ «أَشْهَدُ أَنْ لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا اللهُ» ثُمَّ قَالَ أَشْهَدُ أَنَّ مُحَمَّدًا رَسُولُ اللهِ فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ مِثْلَهَا ثُمَّ صَمَتَ  

[Machine] The Prophet ﷺ said, "Whoever forgets a portion of their prayer should perform two prostrations while sitting."  

أَنَّ النَّبِيَّ ﷺ قَالَ «مَنْ نَسِيَ مِنْ صَلَاتِهِ شَيْئًا فَلْيَسْجُدْ سَجْدَتَيْنِ وَهُوَ جَالِسٌ»  

This is how I saw the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. (Using translation from Aḥmad 1372)  

«هَكَذَا رَأَيْتُ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ يَصْنَعُ»  

This is how I saw the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. (Using translation from Aḥmad 1372)  

«هَكَذَا رَأَيْتُ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ يَفْعَلُ»  

[Machine] Just as he says until he reaches his saying "alive for prayer, alive for success", then he says "there is no power or strength except with Allah", then he says the same as he says, then he said, "This is how I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ saying".  

مِثْلَ مَا يَقُولُ حَتَّى يَنْتَهِيَ إِلَى قَوْلِهِ حَيَّ عَلَى الصَّلَاةِ حَيَّ عَلَى الْفَلَاحِ فَيَقُولَ لَا حَوْلَ وَلَا قُوَّةَ إِلَّا بِاللهِ ثُمَّ يَقُولُ مِثْلَ مَا يَقُولُ ثُمَّ قَالَ «هَكَذَا سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ يَقُولُ»  

This is how I saw the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. (Using translation from Aḥmad 1372)  

«هَكَذَا رَأَيْتُ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ صَنَعَ»  

[Machine] He saw Mu'awiyah leading the people in prayer, so he stood up twice and the people praised Allah. He gestured to them to stand up, and when he finished his prayer, he performed two prostrations before the salutation, and the people prostrated with him. Then he said, "O people, indeed I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ saying, 'Whoever has doubt in his prayer, let him perform two prostrations while he is sitting.'"  

أَنَّهُ رَأَى مُعَاوِيَةَ صَلَّى بِالنَّاسِ فَقَامَ فِي الثِّنْتَيْنِ فَسَبَّحَ النَّاسُ فَأَشَارَ إِلَيْهِمْ أَنْ قُومُوا فَلَمَّا فَرَغَ مِنْ صَلَاتِهِ سَجَدَ سَجْدَتَيْنِ قَبْلَ السَّلَامِ وَسَجَدَهُمَا النَّاسُ مَعَهُ ثُمَّ قَالَ يَا أَيُّهَا النَّاسُ إِنِّي سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ يَقُولُ «مَنْ دَاخَلَهُ شَكٌّ فِي صَلَاتِهِ فَلْيَسْجُدْ سَجْدَتَيْنِ وَهُوَ جَالِسٌ»  

[Machine] The Prophet ﷺ said, "Whoever forgets something from their prayer, they should perform two prostrations (sujood)."  

أَنَّ النَّبِيَّ ﷺ قَالَ «مَنْ نَسِيَ شَيْئًا مِنْ صَلَاتِهِ فَلْيَسْجُدْ سَجْدَتَيْنِ»  

[Machine] "It will be a king from the Qahtan tribe. Muawiyah became angry and stood up, praising Allah for what He deserves. Then he said, 'After this, I have been informed that some of you are speaking about matters that are not in the Book of Allah, nor have they been transmitted from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ . And indeed, this is ignorance from you. So beware of the desires that misguide its people. For I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ saying, "Indeed, this matter is among the Quraysh, and anyone who opposes them, Allah will humiliate him no matter how steadfast they are in religion."  

أَنَّهُ سَيَكُونُ مَلِكٌ مِنْ قَحْطَانَ فَغَضِبَ مُعَاوِيَةُ فَقَامَ فَأَثْنَى عَلَى اللهِ بِمَا هُوَ أَهْلُهُ ثُمَّ قَالَ أَمَّا بَعْدُ فَإِنَّهُ بَلَغَنِي أَنَّ رِجَالًا مِنْكُمْ يَتَحَدَّثُونَ أَحَادِيثَ لَيْسَتْ فِي كِتَابِ اللهِ وَلَا يُؤْثَرُ عَنْ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ وَإِنَّ ذَلِكَ لِجَهَالِكُمْ فَإِيَّاكُمْ وَالْأَمَانِيَّ الَّتِي تُضِلُّ أَهْلَهَا فَإِنِّي سَمِعْتُ النَّبِيَّ ﷺ يَقُولُ «إِنَّ هَذَا الْأَمْرَ فِي قُرَيْشٍ وَلَا يُعَادِيهِمْ أَحَدٌ إِلَّا أَكَبَّهُ اللهُ لِوَجْهِهِ مَا أَقَامُوا الدِّينَ»  

[Machine] I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ saying, "Indeed, in Quraysh, no one opposes them except that Allah humiliates him as long as they establish the religion."  

سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ يَقُولُ «إِنَّ هَذَا الْأَمْرَ فِي قُرَيْشٍ لَا يُعَادِيهِمْ أَحَدٌ إِلَّا أَكَبَّهُ اللهُ عَلَى وَجْهِهِ مَا أَقَامُوا الدِّينَ»  

[Machine] "And I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ saying, "This matter will always remain with the Quraysh, and no one will oppose them except that it will be thrown back on his face as long as they establish religion."  

وَقَالَ سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ يَقُولُ «لَا يَزَالُ هَذَا الْأَمْرُ فِي قُرَيْشٍ لَا يُعَادِيهِمْ أَحَدٌ إِلَّا كُبَّ عَلَى وَجْهِهِ مَا أَقَامُوا الدِّينَ»  

[Machine] Al-Qa'nabi narrated from Malik that Bakr ibn Sahl narrated from Abdullah ibn Yusuf that Malik narrated from Yazid ibn Ziyad who narrated that Muhammad ibn Ka'b al-Quradhi said, "Muawiya ibn Abu Sufyan was on the pulpit and he said, 'O people, indeed, there is no one who can prevent what Allah gives, nor is there anyone who can give what Allah withholds. And there is no benefit for the one with a strong lineage from it, nor does Allah intend good for anyone except He guides them in understanding the religion." Then he said, "I heard these words from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ on these occasions."  

ثنا الْقَعْنَبِيُّ عَنْ مَالِكٍ ح وَحَدَّثَنَا بَكْرُ بْنُ سَهْلٍ ثنا عَبْدُ اللهِ بْنُ يُوسُفَ أَنَا مَالِكٌ عَنْ يَزِيدَ بْنِ زِيَادٍ عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ كَعْبٍ الْقُرَظِيُّ قَالَ قَالَ مُعَاوِيَةُ بْنُ أَبِي سُفْيَانَ وَهُوَ عَلَى الْمِنْبَرِ «أَيُّهَا النَّاسُ إِنَّهُ» لَا مَانِعَ لِمَا أَعْطَى اللهُ وَلَا مُعْطِيَ لِمَا مَنَعَ وَلَا يَنْفَعُ ذَا الْجَدِّ مِنْهُ الْجَدُّ وَمَنْ يُرِدِ اللهُ بِهِ خَيْرًا يُفَقِّهْهُ فِي الدِّينِ ثُمَّ قَالَ سَمِعْتُ هَذِهِ الْكَلِمَاتِ مِنْ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ عَلَى هَذِهِ الْأَعْوَادِ  

[Machine] "O people, there is no one who can prevent what Allah has given, nor is there anyone who can give what Allah has prevented. And the wealth and status of a person cannot benefit them from Allah. Whoever Allah wants good for, He will give them understanding of the religion. I heard these words from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ ."  

«يَا أَيُّهَا النَّاسُ لَا مَانِعَ لِمَا أَعْطَى اللهُ وَلَا مُعْطِيَ لِمَا مَنَعَ وَلَا يَنْفَعُ ذَا الْجَدِّ مِنْهُ الْجَدُّ وَمَنْ يُرِدِ اللهُ بِهِ خَيْرًا يُفَقِّهْهُ فِي الدِّينِ سَمِعْتُ هَؤُلَاءِ الْكَلِمَاتِ مِنْ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ»  

[Machine] I heard Muawiyah bin Abi Sufyan giving a sermon in Madinah, saying, "You should know, O people, that there is no withholder for what Allah gives, and no giver for what Allah withholds. And no one benefits from striving hard in the cause of Allah, except the one whom Allah intends good for and grants understanding in religion." I heard these words from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ on these occasions.  

سَمِعْتُ مُعَاوِيَةَ بْنَ أَبِي سُفْيَانَ يَخْطُبُ بِالْمَدِينَةِ يَقُولُ لَتَعْلَمُنَّ أَيُّهَا النَّاسُ أَنَّهُ لَا مَانِعَ لِمَا أَعْطَى اللهُ وَلَا مُعْطِيَ لِمَا مَنَعَ اللهُ وَلَا يَنْفَعُ ذَا الْجَدِّ مِنْهُ الْجَدُّ مَنْ يُرِدِ اللهُ بِهِ خَيْرًا يُفَقِّهْهُ فِي الدِّينِ سَمِعْتُ هَذِهِ الْأَحْرُفَ مِنْ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ عَلَى هَذِهِ الْأَعْوَادِ
