tabarani:17038Abū Ghassān Aḥmad b. Sahl b. al-Walīd al-Ahwāzī > Khālid b. Yūsuf al-Samtī from my father > Abū Sinān > Nahshal al-Tamīmī > Muʿāwiyah b. Abū Sufyān

[Machine] I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say repeatedly, when the Mu'adhin (caller to prayer) calls the Adhan, and then he pronounces the Shahada (testimony of faith), the Messenger of Allah ﷺ would also pronounce the Shahada. And when he says "Hayya 'ala As-Salah" (come to prayer), he would say "La hawla wa la quwwata illa Billah" (there is no might or power except with Allah). And when he says "Hayya 'ala Al-Falah" (come to success), he would also say "La hawla wa la quwwata illa Billah" (there is no might or power except with Allah).

[Machine] I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ saying, "O people! Indeed, knowledge is only acquired through learning, and understanding is gained through studying. Whoever Allah wishes good for, He grants them understanding in religion. The truly fearful of Allah among His servants are the scholars."

[Machine] Muawiya came out to us while we were supplicating to Allah after we had prayed Dhuhr. He said, "Stay where you are until I come to you." So he came out to us wearing different clothes. When he prayed Asr, he said, "Shall I inform you of something that the companions of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to do? They used to pray the first prayer with him and then sit until they prayed the next prayer with him." So he came out to them and said, "Have you remained in the same place?" They said, "Yes." He said, "If you had seen your Lord, the Blessed and Exalted, open a door from the doors of the sky and show His angels your gatherings while you were awaiting the prayer."

We used to seek omens. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "That is something which one of you finds in his own self, so do not let it prevent you." I said, "O Messenger of Allah, we used to go to fortune-tellers." The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Do not go to fortune-tellers."

[Machine] I set out to a flock that belonged to me in the vicinity of Uhud and Al-Jawwaniyah. I found a wolf had attacked one of the sheep. As a human being from the children of Adam, I felt remorse just as they would. So, I struck the wolf with a blow and then went to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and informed him. He praised me for it and I said, "O Messenger of Allah, should I not free her?" He said, "Yes, bring her to me." So, I brought her to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and he asked, "Where is Allah?" She replied, "In the heavens." He asked, "Who am I?" She said, "You are the Messenger of Allah ﷺ." He said, "Indeed, she is a believer, so set her free."

[Machine] I said to the Prophet ﷺ , "I have a young servant who used to tend to my livestock in the area of Uhud. When I looked after the livestock, I saw a wolf had taken one of the sheep. I felt great remorse, similar to how the children of Adam feel remorse. So, I hit her with a blow. This greatly upset the Messenger of Allah ﷺ , so I asked, 'Should I set her free?' He said, 'Bring her to me.' So, I brought her to him. He asked her, 'Where is Allah?' She replied, 'In the sky.' He asked, 'Who am I?' She replied, 'The Messenger of Allah.' He said, 'Set her free, for indeed she is a believer.'"

And I ask you, by Allah, with what did your Lord send you to us?" He said, "Sit down." Then he said, "With Islam." So I said, "And what is the sign of Islam?" He said, "To bear witness that there is no deity but Allah and that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, to establish prayer, to give zakat, to separate oneself from polytheism, and indeed, every Muslim is a sacred brother of another Muslim, and it is forbidden for a Muslim to shed the blood of another Muslim except in cases of capital punishment. Does Allah's call reach His servants? So let your absent ones convey to your present ones. Indeed, you are being called upon loudly with fury. So, the first thing that will be asked about each of you is his obligation and his kinship." So I said, "O Messenger of Allah, is this our religion?" [Machine] I said, "O Messenger of Allah, what should we do with our 'awrah (private parts) and what should we refrain from?" He said, "Protect your 'awrah except from your spouse and what your right hand possesses." I asked, "But what if we are alone with each other?" He said, "Protect your 'awrah as best as you can." I asked, "But what if we are in seclusion?" He said, "Allah is more deserving to be shy of."

[Machine] I said, "O Messenger of Allah, what should we do with our private parts? What should we approach and what should we avoid?" He said, "Guard your private parts except from your spouse or those whom your right hand possesses." I said, "What if the people are together?" He said, "If you can make sure that no one sees them, then do not let anyone see them." I said, "O Prophet of Allah, what if one of us is alone?" He said, "Allah is more deserving of your shyness."

[Machine] The Prophet ﷺ took some people from my tribe on a suspicion, so a man from my tribe came to the Prophet ﷺ while he was giving a sermon and said, "O Muhammad, why is my beard being seized?" The Prophet ﷺ remained silent, so the man said, "Indeed, there are people who say that you prohibit something and then do it yourself." The Prophet ﷺ said, "What do you say?" So, I intervened between them with words, fearing that he would hear them and curse my tribe, and they would not be successful thereafter. The Prophet ﷺ continued until he understood what I said and then he said, "They have indeed said it" or "He has indeed said it about them, by Allah, if I had done it, it would have been upon me, not upon them, I would have disowned him from his neighbors."
