1. Purification (20/28)
[Machine] The Prophet ﷺ said, "We, the prophets, were given superiority over the rest of the people in three aspects. Our rows were made like the rows of angels, and the earth was made a place of prostration for us, and its soil was made pure for us as well. I was given the concluding verses of Surah Al-Baqarah from a treasure underneath the Throne, no one before me was given them and no one after me will be given them. The narration is from Abu Kamil and Afnan is meant by it (the treasure). And he ﷺ also said, "And its soil was made pure for us."
The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: “I have been given that which was not given to any of the other Prophet ﷺ.” We said: O Messenger of Allah ﷺ, what is it? He said: “I have been supported (against the enemy) with fear, I have been given the keys of the Earth, I have been named Ahmad, the dust has been made a means of purification for me and my ummah has been made the best of nations.ʿ (Using translation from Aḥmad 763)
[Machine] The cultivation of land is the cultivation of the earth.
1.230 [Machine] Wiping hands with dust during Tayammum if there is remaining dust in hands touching the entire face.
[Machine] The Prophet ﷺ said: "Indeed, I used to guide and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ would strike the ground with his hand until it reached the soil, then he would blow into it and wipe his face and hands up to the wrists. But there is no mention of him pulling his arms out in the two Sahihs in the narration of Shu'bah ibn al-Hajjaj."
1.231 [Machine] Whoever does not find water or soil
[Machine] A necklace with the names of Allah, may they be destroyed, was lost, so the Messenger of Allah ﷺ sent some of his companions to look for it. They were overtaken by the prayer, so they prayed without performing ablution. When they came to the Prophet ﷺ , they complained about it to him. Then the verse of tayammum was revealed. Usaid ibn Hudair said, "May Allah reward you with goodness! By Allah, never has an affair been revealed to you except that Allah makes a way out for you from it and brings blessings to the Muslims through it."
[Machine] I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ saying, "Whatever I have forbidden you from, avoid it, and whatever I have commanded you with, do as much of it as you can. Verily, those who were before you were destroyed due to excessive questioning and differing over their prophets."
Abu Musa said to ʿAbdullah bin Masʿud, "If one does not find water (for ablution) can he give up the prayer?" ʿAbdullah replied, "If you give the permission to perform Tayammum they will perform Tayammum even if water was available if one of them found it cold." Abu Musa said, "What about the statement of ʿAmmar to ʿUmar?" ʿAbdullah replied, "ʿUmar was not satisfied by his statement." (Using translation from Bukhārī 345)
1.232 [Machine] Intention in Tayammum
I heard Messenger of Allah ﷺ saying, "The (reward of) deeds, depend upon the intentions and every person will get the reward according to what he has intended. So whoever emigrated for the sake of Allah and His Apostle, then his emigration will be considered to be for Allah and His Apostle, and whoever emigrated for the sake of worldly gain or for a woman to marry, then his emigration will be considered to be for what he emigrated for." (Using translation from Bukhārī 6689)
1.233 [Machine] The beginning with the face, then with the hands.
Accompanied by 'Abd Allah b. 'Umar, I went to Ibn 'Abbas for a certain work. He (Ibn 'Abbas) narrated a tradition saying: A man passed by the Messenger of Allah ﷺ in a street, while he returned from the toilet or just urinated. He (the man) saluted him, but the Prophet did not return the salutation. When the man was about to disappear (from sight) in the street he struck the wall with both his hands and wiped his face with them. He then struck another stroke and wipes his arms. He then returned the man's salutation. Then he said: I did not return the salutation to you because I was not purified. Abu Dawud said: I heard Ahmad b. Hanbal say: Muhammad b. Thabit reported a rejected tradition. Ibn Dasah said: Abu Dawud said: No one supported Muhammad b. Thabit in respect of narrating this tradition as to striking the wall twice (for wiping) from the Prophet ﷺ, but reported it as an action of Ibn 'Umar. (Using translation from Abū Dāʾūd 330)
1.234 [Machine] The Recommended Beginnings with the Right Hand and Then the Left
[Machine] The Prophet ﷺ used to like to be on the right side in his walking, wearing shoes, and cleansing himself, and in all of his affairs. His saying is the saying of Al-Hawdiyy and the saying of Bishr ibn 'Umar in its meaning. And he said...
1.235 [Machine] Sufficient for Someone in a State of Janabah is Tayammum When Water is Unavailable
Messenger of Allah ﷺ saw a person sitting aloof and not praying with the people. He asked him, "O so and so! What prevented you from offering the prayer with the people?" He replied, "O Messenger of Allah ﷺ! I am Junub and there is no water." The Prophet ﷺ said, "Perform Tayammum with clean earth and that will be sufficient for you." (Using translation from Bukhārī 348)
[Machine] Amr ibn Yasir recalls when we were on a military expedition and became ritually impure, so we rolled in the dirt. Then we went to the Prophet ﷺ and informed him about it. He said, "It is sufficient for you to do this," and he described that, meaning performing dry ablution (tayammum).
[Machine] I traveled in the sand and became dusty like the animal. Then, I came to the Prophet ﷺ and informed him. He said, "For that, performing tayammum (dry ablution) would have sufficed you."
[Machine] This verse was revealed regarding the traveler {and not in a state of janabah except for those passing through [a place of prayer], until you have washed [your whole body]}. He said, when he is in a state of janabah and cannot find water, he should perform tayammum and pray until he finds water, and when he finds water, he should perform ghusl (ritual bath).
1.236 [Machine] What is narrated about menstruation and postpartum bleeding, is it sufficient for them to perform Tayammum if water is not available?
[Machine] An Arab came to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) and said, "We are often in the desert, and we have women who are menstruating, in a state of sexual impurity, and experiencing post-natal bleeding. There are four months when we cannot find water." The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said, "Use the sand for purification, meaning perform Tayammum. This hadith is known through the narration of Al-Muthanna ibn As-Sabbaah from Amr, and Al-Muthanna is not considered strong and reliable."
[Machine] A group of Bedouins came to the Prophet ﷺ and said, "O Messenger of Allah, we live in these deserts where we cannot find water and it is not visible for three or four months. Abu Rabi'a doubts this." Among us are women who are on their period and postnatal bleeding, and men who are in a state of major impurity (janabah)." Muhammad Ibn Abdullah al-Hafiz and Muhammad Ibn Musa Ibn Al-Fadl narrated to us, who said: Abu al-Abbas Muhammad Ibn Ya'qub narrated to us, who said that Yahya Ibn Abi Talib narrated to him, who said that Abdullah Ibn Ata narrated to him, who said that Abu Rabi'a al-Sammam mentioned it. Abu Rabi'a al-Sammam is weak. Abu Sa'id al-Malini narrated to us, who said: I am Abu Ahmad Ibn Adi al-Hafiz, who said that Ahmad Ibn Muhammad Ibn al-Sharafi narrated to us, who said that Muhammad Ibn Yahya said: I heard Ali Ibn Abdullah saying, "I said to Sufyan, 'Abu Rabi'a reported from Amr Ibn Dinars who reported from Sa'id Ibn al-Musayyib who reported from Abu Huraira about a man who masturbates with his camels.' Sufyan said, 'This was only mentioned by Jarih Ibn Sabba'ah from Amr Ibn Shuayb. And Amr Ibn Dinar said, 'I heard Jabir Ibn Zaid saying it.' Ali said, 'I said to Sufyan, "Should we take the opinion of Shu'bah

[Machine] The Bedouins came to the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ and said, "We are often in the desert and we are unable to find water for two or three months. And among us there are those who are in a state of major impurity (janabah) or menstruation. The Prophet ﷺ said, "Use dirt instead, O Abdullah ibn Salamah al-Afthas, as you are weak." And Allah knows best.

1.237 [Machine] The man separates himself from the water and his family is affected by it if he wants, then he performs ablution.
I embraced Islam and my (ignorance of the) religion made me anxious (to learn the essentials). I came to Abu Dharr. Abu Dharr said: The climate of Medina did not suit me. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ ordered me to have a few camels and goats. He said to me: Drink their milk. (The narrator Hammad said): I doubt whether he (the Prophet) said: "their urine." Abu Dharr said: I was away from the watering place and I had my family with me. I would have sexual defilement and pray without purification. I came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ at noon. He was resting in the shade of the mosque along with a group of Companions. He (the Prophet) said: Abu Dharr. I said: Yes, I am ruined, Messenger of Allah. He said: What ruined you ? I said: I was away from the watering place and I had family with me. I used to be sexually defiled and pray without purification. He commanded (to bring) water for me. Then a black slave-girl brought a vessel of water that was shaking as the vessel was not full. I concealed myself behind a camel and took bath and them came (to the Prophet). The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: Abu Dharr, clean earth is a means of ablution, even if you do not find water for ten years. When you find water, you should make it touch your skin. Abu Dawud said: This is transmitted by Hammad b. Zaid from Ayyub. This version does not mention the words "their urine." This is not correct. The words "their urine" occur only in the version reported by Anas and transmitted only by the people of Basrah. (Using translation from Abū Dāʾūd 333)

[Machine] A man came to the Prophet ﷺ and said, "If someone goes missing and cannot find any water, will his family suffer?" The Prophet replied, "Yes, and similar to this are the examples that are supported by witnesses, such as the narration of 'Ammar ibn Yasir and Imran ibn Husayn. The testimony of these two is sufficient evidence for these cases."

Once we were traveling with the Prophet ﷺ and we carried on traveling till the last part of the night and then we (halted at a place) and slept (deeply). There is nothing sweeter than sleep for a traveler in the last part of the night. So it was only the heat of the sun that made us to wake up and the first to wake up was so and so, then so and so and then so and so (the narrator ʿAuf said that Abu Raja' had told him their names but he had forgotten them) and the fourth person to wake up was ʿUmar bin Al- Khattab. And whenever the Prophet ﷺ used to sleep, nobody would wake up him till he himself used to get up as we did not know what was happening (being revealed) to him in his sleep. So, ʿUmar got up and saw the condition of the people, and he was a strict man, so he said, "Allahu Akbar" and raised his voice with Takbir, and kept on saying loudly till the Prophet ﷺ got up because of it. When he got up, the people informed him about what had happened to them. He said, "There is no harm (or it will not be harmful). Depart!" So they departed from that place, and after covering some distance the Prophet ﷺ stopped and asked for some water to perform the ablution. So he performed the ablution and the call for the prayer was pronounced and he led the people in prayer. After he finished from the prayer, he saw a man sitting aloof who had not prayed with the people. He asked, "O so and so! What has prevented you from praying with us?" He replied, "I am Junub and there is no water. " The Prophet ﷺ said, "Perform Tayammum with (clean) earth and that is sufficient for you." Then the Prophet ﷺ proceeded on and the people complained to him of thirst. Thereupon he got down and called a person (the narrator ʿAuf added that Abu Raja' had named him but he had forgotten) and ʿAli, and ordered them to go and bring water. So they went in search of water and met a woman who was sitting on her camel between two bags of water. They asked, "Where can we find water?" She replied, "I was there (at the place of water) this hour yesterday and my people are behind me." They requested her to accompany them. She asked, "Where?" They said, "To Messenger of Allah ﷺ ." She said, "Do you mean the man who is called the Sabi, (with a new religion)?" They replied, "Yes, the same person. So come along." They brought her to the Prophet ﷺ and narrated the whole story. He said, "Help her to dismount." The Prophet ﷺ asked for a pot, then he opened the mouths of the bags and poured some water into the pot. Then he closed the big openings of the bags and opened the small ones and the people were called upon to drink and water their animals. So they all watered their animals and they (too) all quenched their thirst and also gave water to others and last of all the Prophet ﷺ gave a pot full of water to the person who was Junub and told him to pour it over his body. The woman was standing and watching all that which they were doing with her water. By Allah, when her water bags were returned the looked like as if they were more full (of water) than they had been before (Miracle of Messenger of Allah ﷺ) Then the Prophet ﷺ ordered us to collect something for her; so dates, flour and Sawiq were collected which amounted to a good meal that was put in a piece of cloth. She was helped to ride on her camel and that cloth full of foodstuff was also placed in front of her and then the Prophet ﷺ said to her, "We have not taken your water but Allah has given water to us." She returned home late. Her relatives asked her: "O so and so what has delayed you?" She said, "A strange thing! Two men met me and took me to the man who is called the Sabi' and he did such and such a thing. By Allah, he is either the greatest magician between this and this (gesturing with her index and middle fingers raising them towards the sky indicating the heaven and the earth) or he is Allah's true Apostle." Afterwards the Muslims used to attack the pagans around her abode but never touched her village. One day she said to her people, "I think that these people leave you purposely. Have you got any inclination to Islam?" They obeyed her and all of them embraced Islam. Abu ʿAbdullah said: The word Saba'a means "The one who has deserted his old religion and embraced a new religion." Abul 'Ailya [??] said, "The SʿAbis are a sect of people of the Scripture who recite the Book of Psalms." (Using translation from Bukhārī 344)

That they were with the Prophet ﷺ on a journey. They travelled the whole night, and when dawn approached, they took a rest and sleep overwhelmed them till the sun rose high in the sky. The first to get up was Abu Bakr. Messenger of Allah ﷺs used not to be awakened from his sleep, but he would wake up by himself. ʿUmar woke up and then Abu Bakr sat by the side of the Prophet's head and started saying: Allahu-Akbar raising his voice till the Prophet ﷺ woke up, (and after traveling for a while) he dismounted and led us in the morning prayer. A man amongst the people failed to join us in the prayer. When the Prophet ﷺ had finished the prayer, he asked (the man), "O so-and-so! What prevented you from offering the prayer with us?" He replied, "I am Junub," Alllah's Apostle ordered him to perform Tayammam with clean earth. The man then offered the prayer. Messenger of Allah ﷺ ordered me and a few others to go ahead of him. We had become very thirsty. While we were on our way (looking for water), we came across a lady (riding an animal), hanging her legs between two water-skins. We asked her, "Where can we get water?" She replied, "Oh ! There is no water." We asked, "how far is your house from the water?" She replied, "A distance of a day and a night travel." We said, "Come on to Messenger of Allah ﷺ, "She asked, "What is Messenger of Allah ﷺ ?" So we brought her to Messenger of Allah ﷺ against her will, and she told him what she had told us before and added that she was the mother of orphans. So the Prophet ﷺ ordered that her two water-skins be brought and he rubbed the mouths of the water-skins. As we were thirsty, we drank till we quenched our thirst and we were forty men. We also filled all our waterskins and other utensils with water, but we did not water the camels. The waterskin was so full that it was almost about to burst. The Prophet ﷺ then said, "Bring what (foodstuff) you have." So some dates and pieces of bread were collected for the lady, and when she went to her people, she said, "I have met either the greatest magician or a prophet as the people claim." So Allah guided the people of that village through that lady. She embraced Islam and they all embraced Islam. (Using translation from Bukhārī 3571)

A few goats got collected with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. He said: Abu Dharr, drive them to the wood. I drove them to Rabadhah (a place near Medina). I would have sexual defilement (during my stay there) and I would remain (in this condition) for five or six days. Then I came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. He said: O Abu Dharr. I kept silence. He then said: May your mother bereave you, Abu Dharr: woe be to your mother. He then called a black slave-girl for me. She brought a vessel which contained water. She then concealed me by drawing a curtain and I concealed myself behind a she-camel, and took a bath. I felt as if I had thrown away a mountain from me. He said: Clean earth is a means for ablution for a Muslim, even for ten years (he does not find water); but when you find water, you should make it touch your skin, for that is better. The version of Musaddad has: "the goats (were collected) from the alms," and the tradition reported by 'Amr is complete. (Using translation from Abū Dāʾūd 332)

1.239 [Machine] The vision of water during a prayer initiated by Tayammum was objected by some of our companions based on the general statement of the Prophet ﷺ: "Do not move until you hear a sound or detect a scent" and the general statement in the hadith of Abu Sa'id Al-Khudri: "Do not interrupt the prayer and repel whatever you are able to.

[Machine] That Amr ibn al-Aas used to perform ablution before every prayer, and Qatadah would follow his method. And this is a transmitted narration.

[Machine] The man should not perform the dry ablution except for one prayer, then he should perform the dry ablution for the other prayer. Ali al-Hasan ibn Umara said, "It is weak." I said, "And likewise."

[Machine] "My nation (ummah) holds superiority over all other nations with four characteristics: I have been sent to all people, and the entire earth has been made a place of purification and a mosque for me and my nation. So, wherever a person from my nation comes across the time of prayer, that is their mosque and their place of purification. I have been granted victory through awe, which extends a month's journey in front of me, and fear is instilled in the hearts of my enemies. The spoils of war have been made lawful for me, as stated in the saying of my father, Al-Ash'ath."

[Machine] That the Messenger of Allah ﷺ during the Tabuk expedition stood up at night to pray and mentioned the saying: "I have been given five things that no one before me was given." He mentioned the saying: "The earth has been made a place of prostration and a means of purification for me, so whenever the prayer time comes for me, I purify myself and pray." He said: "And the fifth is that it was said to me, 'Ask, for every Prophet before you asked and I deferred my request until the Day of Resurrection, so it is for you and for whoever testifies that there is no god but Allah'.

[Machine] The Messenger of Allah, ﷺ , said, "We have been favored over the people with three things: The entire earth has been made a mosque for us, and its soil has been made purification for us when we do not find water. Our rows (in prayer) have been made like the rows of angels. And I have been given these verses from the end of Surah Al-Baqarah from a treasure beneath the Throne that no one before me was given and no one after me will be given."
A necklace of mine was lost at Al-Baida' and we were on our way to Medina. The Prophet ﷺ made his camel kneel down and dismounted and laid his head on my lap and slept. Abu Bakr came to me and hit me violently on the chest and said, "You have detained the people because of a necklace." I kept as motionless as a dead person because of the position of Messenger of Allah ﷺ ; (on my lap) although Abu Bakr had hurt me (with the slap). Then the Prophet ﷺ woke up and it was the time for the morning (prayer). Water was sought, but in vain; so the following Verse was revealed:-- "O you who believe! When you intend to offer prayer.." (5.6) Usaid bin Hudair said, "Allah has blessed the people for your sake, O the family of Abu Bakr. You are but a blessing for them." (Using translation from Bukhārī 4608)

(the wife of the Prophet) We set out with Messenger of Allah ﷺ on one of his journeys till we reached Al- Baida' or Dhatul-Jaish, a necklace of mine was broken (and lost). Messenger of Allah ﷺ stayed there to search for it, and so did the people along with him. There was no water at that place, so the people went to Abu- Bakr As-Siddiq and said, "Don't you see what ʿAisha has done? She has made Allah's Apostle and the people stay where there is no water and they have no water with them." Abu Bakr came while Messenger of Allah ﷺ was sleeping with his head on my thigh, He said, to me: "You have detained Messenger of Allah ﷺ and the people where there is no water and they have no water with them. So he admonished me and said what Allah wished him to say and hit me on my flank with his hand. Nothing prevented me from moving (because of pain) but the position of Messenger of Allah ﷺ on my thigh. Messenger of Allah ﷺ got up when dawn broke and there was no water. So Allah revealed the Divine Verses of Tayammum. So they all performed Tayammum. Usaid bin Hudair said, "O the family of Abu Bakr! This is not the first blessing of yours." Then the camel on which I was riding was caused to move from its place and the necklace was found beneath it. (Using translation from Bukhārī 334)

I had a sexual dream on a cold night in the battle of Dhat as-Salasil. I was afraid, if I washed I would die. I, therefore, performed tayammum and led my companions in the dawn prayer. They mentioned that to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. He said: Amr, you led your companions is prayer while you were sexually defiled? I informed him of the cause which impeded me from washing. And I said: I heard Allah say: "Do not kill yourself, verily Allah is merciful to you." The Messenger of Allah ﷺ laughed and did not say anything. Abu Dawud said: 'Abd al-Rahman b. Jubair is an Egyptian and a freed slave of Kharijah b. Hudhafah. He is not Jubair b. Nufair (Using translation from Abū Dāʾūd 334)

[Machine] "By God, I had a dream yesterday, and by God, I have never seen cold like this. Has anything like it ever happened to you?" They replied, "No." So he washed his private parts and performed ablution for prayer, and then prayed with them. When he arrived before the Messenger of Allah, may ﷺ , he asked, "How did you find 'Umar and his companions?" They praised him and said, "O Messenger of Allah, he led us in prayer while he was in a state of major impurity." So the Messenger of Allah, may ﷺ , sent for 'Amr and asked him, and he informed him about it and told him about the extreme cold. He said, "O Messenger of Allah, Allah, the Exalted, says in the Qur'an: 'And do not kill yourselves' (4:29). Had I washed myself, I would have died!" The Messenger of Allah, may ﷺ , laughed at 'Amr's statement. Abu Dawud reported this hadith in his Sunan, and he also narrated this story from Al-Awza'i through Hassaan bin 'Atiyah, who said: 'He performed dry ablution.' The Sheikh said: It is possible that he had done what was reported in both narrations, as he washed what he was able to wash and performed dry ablution for the rest."

[Machine] Abu Musa, O Abu Abdulrahman, the man refrains from it because he cannot find water, should he pray? He said no. He said, "Have you not heard the saying of Ammar to Umar?" The Messenger of Allah ﷺ sent me and you, and I was in a state of major impurity (janabah), so I performed ghusl and then I searched for water. We came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and informed him, so he said, "It is enough for you to do what you did (i.e. perform ghusl), and then wipe your face and hands once." He said, "I did not see Umar satisfied with that, so he said, 'What do you do with this verse?' If you do not find water, then perform dry ablution with clean earth." He said, "If we had allowed them to do this, some of them would have preferred wiping with clean earth when cold water is available." Al-A'mash said, "So I said to my brother, what else could have caused him (Umar) to dislike it except for this?" This is the version recorded in Sahihain (Sahih Bukhari and Sahih Muslim) and narrated by Hafs ibn Ghayath from Al-A'mash, who said in the narration, "Abdullah did not know what to say, so he said, 'If we had allowed them to do this, it is almost certain that when the water is cold, one of them would desert it and perform dry ablution instead.'" So I said to my brother, "Indeed, Abdullah disliked it for this reason." He said, "Yes."

Allah has killed them three times. Allah has made the vast desert or Tayammum a means of purification." This is a connected hadith, and the completion of this story is found in the hadith transmitted by Al-Awza'i from 'Ata.
[Machine] A man was injured during the time of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ , then he had a wet dream, so he was ordered to perform ghusl (ritual bath). He performed ghusl and then fainted and died. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ was informed about this and he said, "They have killed him, may Allah kill them. Didn't they know that the cure for the eye injury is to ask for it?" Ata'ah (narrator) said, we were informed that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ was asked about this and he said, "If he had washed his body and left his head where the injury was, then this would imply washing the affected part properly and the first narration indicates the obligation of performing tayammum (dry ablution). So, whoever combines both narrations, will say that there is no contradiction between them except that one of them is mursal (an incomplete chain of narration)."
