1. Purification (19/28)
[Machine] The Prophet of Allah ﷺ used to perform ablution or perform dry ablution (tayammum) when he was in a state of major ritual impurity (janabah) and wanted to sleep.
"I asked 'Aishah about the Witr of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, how would he perform Witr, was it during the first part of the night or the end of it? She said: 'All of that. Sometimes he would perform Witr during the first part of the night, and sometimes he would perform Witr during the end of it.' So I said: 'All praise is due to Allah who made the matter accommodating.' I said: 'How was his recitation, was he quiet with recitations or loud?' She said: 'He would do all of that. Sometimes he would recite quietly and sometimes aloud.' I said: 'All praise is due to Allah who made the matter accommodating. He said: 'I said: 'How would he deal with sexual impurity? Would he perform Ghusl prior to sleeping or would he sleep prior to Ghusl?' She said: 'He would do all of that. Sometimes he would perform Ghusl then sleep, and sometimes he would perform Wudu and then sleep.' I said: 'Allah praise is due to Allah who made the matter accommodating.'" (Using translation from Tirmidhī 2924)
I asked 'A'isha about the Witr (prayer) of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and made mention of a hadith, then I said: What did he do after having sexual intercourse? Did he take a bath before going to sleep or did he sleep before taking a bath? She said: He did all these. Some- times he took a bath and then slept, and sometimes he performed ablution only and went to sleep. I (the narrator) said: Praise be to Allah Who has made things easy (for human beings). (Using translation from Muslim 307a)

[Machine] To eat or sleep while in a state of major ritual impurity (junub), cleanse the face and hands up to the elbows, wipe the head, then eat or sleep.
[Machine] The Prophet ﷺ was asked, "Can someone sleep while in a state of Janabah (ritual impurity after sexual intercourse)?" He answered, "Yes, let him perform ablution and then sleep until he wants to take a bath." It was reported that Abdullah ibn Umar, when he wanted to sleep while in a state of Janabah, he would pour water onto his hands, then wash his private parts with his left hand, then wash the hand he used to wash his private parts. He would then rinse his mouth, inhale water into his nostrils, sprinkle water in his eyes, wash his face and hands up to the elbows, wipe his head, then he would sleep. And if he wanted to eat something while in a state of Janabah, he would do so.

"Messenger of Allah would sleep while he was Junub, and without touching water (performing Ghusl)." (Using translation from Tirmidhī 118)
[Machine] About the prayer of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ? So she said, "He used to sleep at the beginning of the night and wake up at the end of it. If he had any need for his family, he would fulfill it, then he would sleep before touching water. When the first call to prayer was made, she said, 'He would immediately get up and, by Allah, he never said 'No'. He would take water and, by Allah, he never said 'No'. He would perform ablution and I know what he intended. If he had no need, he would perform the ablution of a man for prayer and then he would pray the two units (rak'ahs)."
[Machine] She said, "The Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to perform ablution when he was in a state of sexual impurity before going to sleep or eating."
[Machine] I asked Aisha how the Prophet ﷺ would perform ablution if he wanted to sleep while in a state of impurity (junub). She said that he would perform ablution for prayer and then go to sleep. The sheikh said that the narration of Abu Ishaq As-Sabiiy is correct from the perspective of narration. Abu Ishaq clarified that he heard it from Al-Aswad who narrated it from Zuhair ibn Muawiya. As for Al-Mudallis, when he clarifies his hearing from someone and is reliable, there is no reason to reject his narration. The reconciliation between the two narrations is possible, and Abu Al-Abbas Ibn Shuraih has reconciled them well according to what we have been informed by Abu Abdullah Al-Hafiz. He said, "I asked Abu Al-Waleed Al-Faqih and said, 'Which narration is correct: that of Thawri from Abu Ishaq from Al-Aswad from Aisha, that the Prophet ﷺ would sleep in a state of impurity without touching water, or the narration of Nafi' and Abdullah Ibn Dinar from Ibn Umar that Umar asked the Prophet ﷺ , 'Can we sleep while in a state of impurity?' and he answered, 'Yes, if you perform ablution.' Abu Al-Waleed said, "The ruling is both of them. As for the narration of Aisha, she meant that the Prophet ﷺ would not touch water for bath, and as for the narration of Umar, it is explained that ablution was mentioned, and that is what we take."

[Machine] The Prophet ﷺ, when he was in a state of ritual impurity (junub), used to perform ablution (wudu) if he wanted to eat or sleep.
[Machine] That the Prophet, ﷺ , used to wash his hands when he wanted to eat while he was in a state of major ritual impurity. Abu Ali al-Rudhbari informed us, Abu Bakr ibn Dasa narrated to us, Abu Dawood narrated to us, Muhammad ibn as-Sabah al-Bazzaz mentioned it with his chain of narrators and said, he washed his hands. Abu Dawood also narrated it, through Ibn Wahb, from Yunus, and he made the story of eating attributed to Aisha as a separate narration. The shaykh said, and likewise.
[Machine] That the Messenger of Allah, ﷺ , when he wanted to sleep while in a state of sexual impurity, he would perform ablution for prayer before sleeping. Aisha said, "And when he wanted to eat or drink, he would wash his hands and then eat and drink, if he wished to do so." It has been said in this narration that there is something different, and the hadith of Al-Aswad from Aisha is considered more authentic.
[Machine] "I arrived at my family's place from a journey, and they smeared me with saffron. When I woke up in the morning, I went to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and greeted him, but he did not greet me back or smile at me. He told me to go and wash off the saffron, so I washed it off. Then I went to him, and there was still some of it left on me. I greeted him, but he did not greet me back or smile at me. He told me to go and wash it off again, so I washed it off. Then I went to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and greeted him, and he responded to my greeting, smiled at me, and said: 'Indeed, the angels do not attend the funeral of a disbeliever, one who has smeared himself with saffron, or one who is in a state of sexual impurity. And it is permissible for one who is in a state of sexual impurity, and wishes to eat or sleep, to perform ablution.'"

[Machine] That the Prophet ﷺ permitted the person in a state of major ritual impurity (junub) to eat, drink, or sleep without performing ablution (wudu). Abu Dawud mentioned a discussion between Yahya ibn Yamar and Ammar ibn Yasir regarding this hadith, where a man said and Ali and Ibn Umar and Abdullah ibn Amr said that the person in a state of major ritual impurity (junub) should perform ablution (wudu) before eating.

(the wife of the Prophet) We set out with Messenger of Allah ﷺ on one of his journeys till we reached Al- Baida' or Dhatul-Jaish, a necklace of mine was broken (and lost). Messenger of Allah ﷺ stayed there to search for it, and so did the people along with him. There was no water at that place, so the people went to Abu- Bakr As-Siddiq and said, "Don't you see what ʿAisha has done? She has made Allah's Apostle and the people stay where there is no water and they have no water with them." Abu Bakr came while Messenger of Allah ﷺ was sleeping with his head on my thigh, He said, to me: "You have detained Messenger of Allah ﷺ and the people where there is no water and they have no water with them. So he admonished me and said what Allah wished him to say and hit me on my flank with his hand. Nothing prevented me from moving (because of pain) but the position of Messenger of Allah ﷺ on my thigh. Messenger of Allah ﷺ got up when dawn broke and there was no water. So Allah revealed the Divine Verses of Tayammum. So they all performed Tayammum. Usaid bin Hudair said, "O the family of Abu Bakr! This is not the first blessing of yours." Then the camel on which I was riding was caused to move from its place and the necklace was found beneath it. (Using translation from Bukhārī 334)

1.226 [Machine] How to perform Tayammum
[Machine] He said that he heard him say, "I and Abdullah bin Yasir, the Slaves of Maymuna, the wife of the Prophet, ﷺ , went until we entered upon Abu al-Juhaym bin al-Harith bin as-Simah. Abu al-Juhaym said, 'The Messenger of Allah, ﷺ , came from the side of the well of Jamam and met a man who greeted him, but he did not respond to him. Then he approached the wall, wiped his face and hands on it, and then returned the greeting to him."
[Machine] I passed by the Messenger of Allah ﷺ while he was urinating, so I greeted him. He did not respond to me until he finished, went to a wall, struck it with a stick that he had with him, then he placed his hand on the wall and wiped his face and arms. He then responded to me. This narration is witnessed by Abu Salih, the scribe of Al-Laith, except that this part is missing: Abdul Rahman ibn Hurmuz Al-A'raj did not hear it from Ibn As-Sammah. He only heard it from Umayr, the freed slave of Ibn Abbas, who heard it from Ibn As-Sammah, and Ibrahim ibn Muhammad ibn Abi Yahya Al-Aslami, and Abu Al-Huwayrith, Abdul Rahman ibn Muawiya. They said: The scholars differ regarding their reliability, except that their narration mentioning the wiping of the arms is supported by a hadith from Ibn Umar.
[Machine] While the Prophet ﷺ was on a path in Medina, and he had just come out from defecation or urination, a man greeted him, but the Prophet ﷺ did not respond. Then, the Prophet ﷺ struck his palms and wiped his face with them. Then, he struck his palms a second time and wiped his arms up to his elbows, and he said, "I did not respond to you because I was not in a state of ritual purity." This is a narration from Ibn Abbaan, and some of the scholars have criticized the attribution of this narration to Muhammad ibn Thaabit al-Abdi. Therefore, they have raised doubts about the authenticity of this narration.
[Machine] The messenger of Allah, ﷺ , returned from relieving himself and met a man by the well of Jamel. He greeted him, but the messenger of Allah, ﷺ , did not respond to him until he reached the wall. He placed his hand on the wall, wiped his face and hands, and then returned the greeting to the man. This narration is a witness to the narration of Muhammad ibn Thabit al-Abdi, except that he included the wiping of the arms, which others did not confirm, like he and Ibn Haddad in mentioning his performing tayammum (dry ablution) and then returning the greeting. Although Dahhak ibn Uthman shortened his actions and Ibn Umar performed tayammum on his face and arms up to the elbows, this is a witness to the authenticity of the narration of Muhammad ibn Thabit without any contradiction, as Abu Abdullah al-Hafidh, Abu Abdullah al-Sulami, and Abu Bakr Ahmad ibn Muhammad ibn Ibrahim al-Ushnani reported to us, narrating from Abu al-Hasan Ahmad ibn Muhammad ibn Abdus, who heard it from Uthman ibn Sa'eed al-Darimi, who said, "I asked Yahya ibn Ma'een about it, and he said, 'There is no problem with Muhammad ibn Thabit al-Abdi, this is what he said in his narration, which is not deserving of criticism based on the evidence that I mentioned.'"

[Machine] He and Abdullah ibn Umar approached from the cliff until they reached the Marbad. Abdullah ibn Umar descended and performed Tayammum on a clean, smooth surface. He wiped his face and hands up to the elbows, then he prayed.
[Machine] That Abdullah ibn Umar used to do Tayammum (ritual purification with clean earth in the absence of water) with his two elbows.
[Machine] About the Prophet ﷺ and it was narrated by Sulaiman ibn Arqam At-Taimi, from Az-Zuhri, from Salim, from his father, from the Prophet ﷺ that Sulaiman ibn Abi Dawud and Sulaiman ibn Arqam are weak narrators and their narrations cannot be used as evidence, and the authentic narration is the narration of Ma'mar and others from Az-Zuhri, from Salim, from Ibn Umar regarding his actions.
[Machine] He struck, so he struck the ground with his hands, then wiped his face. Then he struck with his hands and wiped his hands up to his elbows. This is what he said and its chain of narration is authentic, except that he did not clarify the matter to him by that.
[Machine] On the authority of the Prophet ﷺ , he said: "Tayammum is striking the face and striking the hands up to the elbows."
[Machine] I used to serve the Prophet ﷺ. Then Jibril came to him with the verse of Tayammum. So the Messenger of Allah ﷺ showed me how to do the wiping for Tayammum. I struck the ground once with my hand and wiped my face with it. Then I struck the ground again and wiped my hands up to the elbows. Rabiah bin Badr narrated this hadith as weak, though he is not alone in narrating it. This statement has been narrated from the Tabi'un, from Salim bin Abdullah, and from Al-Hasan al-Basri, Ash-Sha'bi, and Ibrahim an-Nakha'i.
1.227 [Machine] The mention of narrations in the method of Tayammum according to Ammar ibn Yasir
[Machine] "Aisha lost a necklace of hers during a trip with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ . Aisha searched for her necklace until nightfall. Abu Bakr arrived and became angry with her, saying that she had held the people in a place where there was no water. Allah then revealed the verse of the desert. Abu Bakr approached Aisha and said, 'By Allah, my daughter, I did not know it was blessed.' Ubaidullah narrated that on that day, the people woke up and wiped their faces with their hands, then they would strike another blow and wipe their hands on their foreheads and necks. Then they would pray, and so on."
[Machine] We wiped ourselves with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ with dust. So, we wiped our faces and hands up to the elbows. This is the wording of the narration of Ibn 'Abdan, and likewise...
[Machine] The Messenger of Allah, ﷺ , married from the captives of the army, and with him was his wife Aisha. Her wedding contract was lost during the distress of Dhafar, so people were detained seeking her contract. This continued until dawn broke and there was no water with the people. Then Allah, the Most High, revealed to the Messenger of Allah, ﷺ , the verse of permissibility to perform ablution with clean earth. So the Muslims stood up with the Messenger of Allah, ﷺ , and struck the ground with their hands, then lifted their hands without taking any dust from the ground. They wiped their faces and hands, and wiped from their shoulders to their wrists, and from the pits of their hands to their fingertips. Ibn Shihab said, "Do not be deceived by these people." It has reached us that Abu Bakr said to Aisha, "By Allah, I did not know that you are blessed." Muhammad ibn Ishaq narrated it from Az-Zuhri. Ibn Abbas mentioned it, as did Ibn Abi Dhi'b, Yunus, and Abu Abdullah al-Hafiz. Abu al-Abbas narrated it from Rabiah ibn Sulayman, who said that Ash-Shafi'i, may Allah be pleased with him, said regarding the Hadith of Ammar ibn Yasir, "This is abrogated because Ammar informed him that this was the first instance of performing Tayammum when the verse of Tayammum was revealed. So every Tayammum after that by the Prophet, ﷺ , was in contradiction to this, therefore it is abrogated for him." Ash-Shafi'i also narrated that it was reported from Ammar that the Prophet, ﷺ , ordered him to perform Tayammum on his face and hands.
[Machine] Ammar ibn Yasir to Umar ibn Al-Khattab, do you not remember that we were on a journey and you and I were considered strangers? As for you, you did not perform prayer, but as for me, I was in a state of janabah (impurity), so I performed prayer. Then I went to the Prophet ﷺ and mentioned this to him. The Prophet ﷺ said, "It was sufficient for you to do as you did." Then the Prophet ﷺ struck the ground with his hands, blew into them, wiped his face and hands with them.

[Machine] Ammar bin Yasir, O Amir al-Mu'minin, do you remember when you and I were in an expedition and you and I refrained from performing ablution? As for you, you did not perform the prayer, but as for me, I rolled in the dust. Then we came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and mentioned it to him. He ﷺ said, "O Ammar, it would have been sufficient for you to say so." And he struck his hands on the ground, then he blew into them and wiped his face and hands. Then he said, "Salama, is it sufficient for the two arms or not?" He (Salama) said, "I don't know if it reached the two elbows or not." Umar said to him, "Fear Allah." Ammar said, "If you wish, O Amir al-Mu'minin, I will not mention it, for Allah has given you the right that I should not speak of it." Umar said to him, "No, we will give you what you are entitled to." And Abu Bakr bin Furak informed us that Abdullah bin Ja'far narrated to us that Yunus bin Habib narrated to us from Abu Dawood al-Tayalisi who narrated from Shu'bah who narrated from Salama bin Kuhayl that he said, "I heard Dharr narrating from Ibn Abd al-Rahman bin Abza, and he mentioned it." Shu'bah said, then Salama hesitated and did not mention whether it reached the palms of the hands or not, or the elbows.

[Machine] And 'Ammaar said: So I came to the Prophet ﷺ and mentioned that to him, so he said, "It would have been sufficient for you to say like this" and he struck his hand on the ground, then blew on it, and wiped his face and hands with it up to the middle of his arm. And it was narrated by Husayn bin 'Abdul-Rahman from Abu Maalik who said, "I heard 'Ammaar giving a sermon and he mentioned Tayammum, so he struck the ground with his palms, and wiped his face and his palms with them" And Ibraheem bin Tahaaman narrated it from Husayn, and it was narrated by Al-A'mash once from Salamah bin Kuhail from 'Abdul-Rahman bin Abza, and once from Salamah from Sa'eed bin 'Abdul-Rahman from his father, and he said once in its wording, "Then he wiped his face and his two arms up to the middle of his forearm, and he did not reach his elbows."

[Machine] He said: I asked the Prophet ﷺ about Tayammum, so he instructed me to strike the face and hands once. Qatadah used to give fatwa regarding this as well.
Qatadah was asked about tayammum during a journey. He said: A traditionist reported to me from al-Sha'bi from 'Abd al-Rahman b. Abza on the authority of 'Ammar b. Yasir who reported the Messenger of Allah ﷺ as saying: (He should wipe) up to the elbows. (Using translation from Abū Dāʾūd 328)
[Machine] "That the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to the two elbows. Abu Ishaq said, 'So I mentioned it to Ahmad ibn Hanbal, and he was amazed by it and said, 'How good you are!' The sheikh, this difference of opinion is in the text of the hadith of Ibn Abzah from Ammar, indeed it happened most of it from Salamah ibn Kuhail out of doubt, and it happened to him, and Al-Hakam ibn Utaibah is a scholar, he narrated from Thar ibn Abdullah from Sa'id ibn 'Abd al-Rahman, and then he heard from Sa'id ibn 'Abd al-Rahman, so he narrated the hadith on certainty without any doubt in it. And the hadith of Qatadah from 'Azrah agrees with it, and likewise the hadith of Husayn from Abu Malik. As for the hadith of Qatadah from a narrator from al-Sha'bi, it is disconnected, and it is not known who narrated it, so it is examined, and the hadith is established from another aspect, so there is no doubt in the authenticity of its chain."

[Machine] Abu Musa said, "O Abu Abdur Rahman, if a person is in a state of impurity and cannot find water, can he pray?"
He replied, "No."
Abu Musa said, "Did you not hear what Ammar said to Umar, that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ sent me and you (to a place), and I was in a state of impurity, so I performed tayammum with clean soil and we came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and informed him about it. He said, 'It would have been sufficient for you to do this' - and he struck his palms once, wiped his face and hands with them - 'and that would have been enough.' I did not see Umar content with that. I said, 'How can you act upon this verse: And if you are ill or on a journey or one of you comes from the place of relieving himself or you have contacted women and find no water, then seek clean earth and wipe over your faces and your hands [Surah Al-Nisa, 43]?' He said, 'If we were to make things easier for them in this matter, one of them would go when he finds cold water and wipe with soil.' Al-A'mash said: So I said to my brother, 'What he dislikes is only because of this matter.'

[Machine] Al-Shafi'i said in the narration of 'Amr ibn Yasar, "It is not permissible for 'Amr, if he mentioned their tayammum with the Prophet (PBUH) when the verse was revealed to the people of the heights, to act upon the order of the Prophet (PBUH) unless it is abrogated. It has been narrated that the Prophet (PBUH) ordered tayammum on the face and hands, or that they only heard about it once, so their narration differs from his. So the narration of Ibn As-Simmah, which did not differ, is more reliable. And if it did not differ, then it is better to be taken, because it is more in line with the book of Allah (SWT) than the two narrations that disagree. Or it could be that they only heard about the verse of tayammum when they were present for prayer, so they performed tayammum as a precaution. They reached the limit of what is called by the name of the hand, because that does not harm them as it would not harm them if they did it during ablution. When they asked the Prophet (PBUH) about it, he informed them that he would allow them to perform tayammum with less than what they did, and this is more plausible in my opinion based on the narration of Ibn Shihab from the narration of 'Amr with the evidence I mentioned. Al-Shafi'i said, "We have been prevented from relying on the narration of 'Amr ibn Yasar in performing tayammum on the face and hands due to the confirmation of the report from the Messenger of Allah (PBUH) that he only wiped his face and arms. And this is closer to the Qur'an and the analogy, as substituting one thing with its like. Al-Hasan ibn Muhammad ibn As-Sabbah Az-Za'farani narrated from Al-Shafi'i the narration of Ibn 'Umar regarding tayammum, a strike on the face and a strike on both arms up to the elbows, then he said, "Abu Abdullah (meaning Al-Shafi'i) said, "Based on this, I have seen our companions relying on it, even though something has been narrated from the Prophet (PBUH). If I knew it to be authentic, I would not have denied it or hesitated. It has been narrated that 'Amr performed tayammum with the Prophet (PBUH) on the manakib, and it has been narrated from him that the Prophet (PBUH) wiped his face and hands. It seems that his statement 'We performed tayammum with the Prophet (PBUH) on the manakib' was not about the order of the Prophet (PBUH). If it is confirmed from 'Amr that the Prophet (PBUH) wiped his face and hands and it is not confirmed from the Prophet (PBUH) to the elbows, then what is confirmed from the Prophet (PBUH) is more worthy of being followed. And so it is closer to the Qur'an and the analogy. It is the practice of Ibn 'Umar, which is narrated from him as authentic. It has also been narrated from 'Ali and Ibn 'Abbas that wiping the face and hands is prescribed. And it has been narrated from 'Ali in opposition to it."

[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "I have been given five things that no one before me was given. I have been granted victory through fear for a distance of one month's journey. The earth has been made a place of prayer and purification for me, so wherever a man from my nation reaches the time of prayer, let him pray. The spoils of war have been made permissible for me, and they were not made permissible for anyone before me. I have been given intercession, and the Prophet used to be sent specifically to his people, but I have been sent to all of mankind."

The earth has been made a mosque and a purifier for me, so whenever a man from my Ummah (nation) comes for prayer and finds no water, he may make use of the earth as a mosque and a purifier. I have been given superiority over all the other prophets in three respects: I have been supported with fear towards my enemy for a distance of one month's journey; spoils of war have been made lawful for me; and the earth has been made clean and a place of worship for me."
[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Verily the good land is the ablution of a Muslim, even if he had ten pilgrimages. So if he finds water, let him touch his skin, for that is better."
[Machine] The Messenger of Allah, ﷺ , said, "The clean land is a purification for the Muslim, even if he does not find water for ten years, he can perform Tayammum with it."

[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "I have been granted superiority over the people in three ways: Our rows (in prayer) are made like the rows of angels, the entire earth has been made a place of worship for us, and its soil has been made pure for us. He also mentioned another virtue."
