[Machine] Abu Musa said, "O Abu Abdur Rahman, if a person is in a state of impurity and cannot find water, can he pray?"

He replied, "No."

Abu Musa said, "Did you not hear what Ammar said to Umar, that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ sent me and you (to a place), and I was in a state of impurity, so I performed tayammum with clean soil and we came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and informed him about it. He said, 'It would have been sufficient for you to do this' - and he struck his palms once, wiped his face and hands with them - 'and that would have been enough.' I did not see Umar content with that. I said, 'How can you act upon this verse: And if you are ill or on a journey or one of you comes from the place of relieving himself or you have contacted women and find no water, then seek clean earth and wipe over your faces and your hands [Surah Al-Nisa, 43]?' He said, 'If we were to make things easier for them in this matter, one of them would go when he finds cold water and wipe with soil.' Al-A'mash said: So I said to my brother, 'What he dislikes is only because of this matter.'

When I returned to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and informed him, he laughed and said, 'It would have been sufficient for you to do this,' and he struck his hands on the ground and wiped them and made one wiping on his face with one strike?" Abdullah replied, "No doubt, I never saw Umar satisfied with that." Abu Musa said, "How about this verse from Surah An-Nisa, 'And if you do not find water, then seek clean earth.'?" Abdullah replied, "Abdullah did not know what to say, and he said, 'If we allowed them to perform Tayammum (dry ablution) in such a situation, one of them might not perform Tayammum if water dripped on their skin.' Affaan said, 'Yahya, the son of Sa'id, disagreed with him.' So I asked Hafs bin Ghiyyath, who said, 'Al-A'mash narrated to us from Salamah bin Kuhail, who mentioned Abu Wa'il.'"

The Messenger of Allah ﷺ sent me and you, and I was in a state of major impurity (janabah), so I performed ghusl and then I searched for water. We came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and informed him, so he said, "It is enough for you to do what you did (i.e. perform ghusl), and then wipe your face and hands once." He said, "I did not see Umar satisfied with that, so he said, 'What do you do with this verse?' If you do not find water, then perform dry ablution with clean earth." He said, "If we had allowed them to do this, some of them would have preferred wiping with clean earth when cold water is available." Al-A'mash said, "So I said to my brother, what else could have caused him (Umar) to dislike it except for this?" This is the version recorded in Sahihain (Sahih Bukhari and Sahih Muslim) and narrated by Hafs ibn Ghayath from Al-A'mash, who said in the narration, "Abdullah did not know what to say, so he said, 'If we had allowed them to do this, it is almost certain that when the water is cold, one of them would desert it and perform dry ablution instead.'" So I said to my brother, "Indeed, Abdullah disliked it for this reason." He said, "Yes."
