[Machine] "Did a person who was in a state of sexual impurity for a month not offer prayer? Abdullah said no. Abu Musa said, 'Do you not remember when Ammar ibn Yasir said to Umar, 'O Amir al-Mu'minin, do you not fear Allah? Do you not remember when the Messenger of Allah ﷺ sent both you and me to take care of the camels and I was affected by major impurity (janabah)? I then purified myself with soil. When I returned to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and informed him, he said, 'It would have been sufficient for you to say this,' and he hit his hand on the ground and wiped his face and hands.' Abdullah said, 'No doubt, I never saw Umar content with this.' Abu Musa said, 'What about this verse in Surah An-Nisa, 'If you can't find water, then perform Tayammum (dry ablution) with clean earth,' Abdullah replied, 'If we had allowed them to do so, as soon as water came into contact with their skin, they would have performed Tayammum.'"

I was with ʿAbdullah and Abu Musa; the latter asked the former, "O Abu ʿAbdur-Rahman! What is your opinion if somebody becomes Junub and no water is available?" ʿAbdullah replied, "Do not pray till water is found." Abu Musa said, "What do you say about the statement of ʿAmmar (who was ordered by the Prophet ﷺ to perform Tayammum). The Prophet ﷺ said to him: "Perform Tayammum and that would be sufficient." ʿAbdullah replied, "Don't you see that ʿUmar was not satisfied by ʿAmmar's statement?" Abu- Musa said, "All right, leave ʿAmmar's statement, but what will you say about this verse (of Tayammum)?" ʿAbdullah kept quiet and then said, "If we allowed it, then they would probably perform Tayammum even if water was available, if one of them found it (water) cold." The narrator added, "I said to Shaqiq, "Then did ʿAbdullah dislike to perform Tayammum because of this?" He replied, "Yes."

I was sitting in the company of Abdullah and Abu Musa when Abu Musa said: 0 'Abd al-Rahman (kunya of 'Abdullah b. Mas'ud), what would you like a man to do about the prayer if he experiences a seminal emission or has sexual intercourse but does not find water for a month? 'Abdullah said: He should not perform tayammum even if he does not find water for a month. 'Abdullah said: Then what about the verse in Sura Ma'ida:" If you do not find water, betake yourself to clean dust"? 'Abdullah said: If they were granted concession on the basis of this verse, there is a possibility that they would perform tayammum with dust on finding water very cold for themselves. Abu Musa said to Abdullah: You have not heard the words of 'Ammar: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ sent me on an errand and I had a seminal emission, but could find no water, and rolled myself in dust just as a beast rolls itself. I came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ then and made a mention of that to him and he (the Holy Prophet) said: It would have been enough for you to do thus. Then he struck the ground with his hands once and wiped his right hand with the help of his left hand and the exterior of his palms and his face. 'Abdullah said: Didn't you see that Umar was not fully satisfied with the words of 'Ammar only?

He replied: No, even if he does not find water for a month. Abu Musa then said: How will you do with the Qur'anic version (about tayammum) in the chapter al-Ma'idah which says: "... and you find no water, then go to clean, high ground" (5:6)? 'Abd Allah (b. Mas'ud) then said: If they (the people) are granted concession in this respect, they might perform tayammum with pure earth when water is cold. Abu Musa said: For this (reason) you forbade it ? [Machine] "I was sitting with Abdullah and Abu Musa. Abu Musa said, 'O Abu Abdur-Rahman, if a person cannot find water, should he still pray?' I said, 'No.' Abu Musa said, 'Do you not remember the statement of Ammar to Umar? The Messenger of Allah ﷺ sent both of us, and I became junub and had to perform tayammum with soil. Then I went to the Prophet ﷺ and informed him about it, and he said, 'It would have been sufficient for you to do this,' and he struck his hand on the ground and rubbed his face and hands with it.'"

I have not seen Umar compromising on this. He said, 'What will you do with this verse: "So if you do not find water, then purify yourselves with clean earth"?' He said, 'If we granted permission to them in this matter, then whenever one of them found cold water, he would perform tayammum with the earth.' Ya'la narrated this from Al-A'mash who said, 'I said to my brother (Ammar), "This was only because of this."'

[Machine] I was with Abdullah and Abu Musa, and Abu Musa said, "O Abu Abdur Rahman, if a person is in a state of major impurity and cannot find water, should they still perform prayer?" Abdullah replied, "Listen to the saying of Ammar ibn Yasir to Umar. The Prophet ﷺ sent both of us, and I was in a state of major impurity. Therefore, I performed dry ablution and joined the Prophet ﷺ. I informed him about my condition, and he said, 'That is enough for you.' He then wiped his face and hands once. I have never seen Umar disagreeing with that ruling. Umar said, 'How will you deal with this verse: 'And if you do not find water, then perform tayammum with pure earth'?' Umar said, 'If we permit them to perform tayammum in this situation, one of them, when finding cold water, will wipe himself with earth.' Al-A'mash said, 'So I said to my brother, Umar disliked it only because of this reason.'"

[Machine] Abu Musa, O Abu Abdulrahman, the man refrains from it because he cannot find water, should he pray? He said no. He said, "Have you not heard the saying of Ammar to Umar?" The Messenger of Allah ﷺ sent me and you, and I was in a state of major impurity (janabah), so I performed ghusl and then I searched for water. We came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and informed him, so he said, "It is enough for you to do what you did (i.e. perform ghusl), and then wipe your face and hands once." He said, "I did not see Umar satisfied with that, so he said, 'What do you do with this verse?' If you do not find water, then perform dry ablution with clean earth." He said, "If we had allowed them to do this, some of them would have preferred wiping with clean earth when cold water is available." Al-A'mash said, "So I said to my brother, what else could have caused him (Umar) to dislike it except for this?" This is the version recorded in Sahihain (Sahih Bukhari and Sahih Muslim) and narrated by Hafs ibn Ghayath from Al-A'mash, who said in the narration, "Abdullah did not know what to say, so he said, 'If we had allowed them to do this, it is almost certain that when the water is cold, one of them would desert it and perform dry ablution instead.'" So I said to my brother, "Indeed, Abdullah disliked it for this reason." He said, "Yes."

[Machine] Abu Musa said, "O Abu Abdur Rahman, if a person is in a state of impurity and cannot find water, can he pray?"

He replied, "No."

Abu Musa said, "Did you not hear what Ammar said to Umar, that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ sent me and you (to a place), and I was in a state of impurity, so I performed tayammum with clean soil and we came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and informed him about it. He said, 'It would have been sufficient for you to do this' - and he struck his palms once, wiped his face and hands with them - 'and that would have been enough.' I did not see Umar content with that. I said, 'How can you act upon this verse: And if you are ill or on a journey or one of you comes from the place of relieving himself or you have contacted women and find no water, then seek clean earth and wipe over your faces and your hands [Surah Al-Nisa, 43]?' He said, 'If we were to make things easier for them in this matter, one of them would go when he finds cold water and wipe with soil.' Al-A'mash said: So I said to my brother, 'What he dislikes is only because of this matter.'
