1. Purification
[Machine] I was with the Prophet ﷺ on a journey, and he said, "Do you have water with you?" I said, "Yes." He then descended from his mount and walked until he disappeared from my sight in the darkness of the night. Then he came back, and I poured water for him from the container. He washed his hands and face, and he had a woolen cloak over him. He was unable to take out his arms from it until he pulled them out from beneath the cloak. Then he washed his arms and wiped his head. I intended to remove his shoes, but he said, "Leave them, for I have already made them pure." He then wiped his hands over them. This is the narration of Abu Nuaym, reported by Al-Bukhari in his Sahih from Abu Nuaym, and reported by Muslim from Muhammad ibn Abdillah ibn Numair, from his father, from Zakariya. And likewise...
[Machine] When he said that, I said, "Shall I not remove your shoes, O Messenger of Allah?" He said, "Indeed, I have already entered them while in a state of purity and I have not been in a state of impurity since then."
[Machine] We were with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ during a journey, and he said, "Stay behind, O Mu'ghira, and you all go." So I stayed behind and I had water with me. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ relieved himself and then returned. I poured water for him, and he washed his face. Then he went to wash his hands, but he had a Roman cloak on which became tight on his sleeves. So he put his hand inside it and washed his hands, wiped his head, and wiped over his socks. Sufyan added two extra statements from Ash-Sha'bi on the authority of Urwa ibn Al-Mughira from his father, who said, "I asked, 'O Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless you, should I wipe over my socks?' He said, 'Certainly, I did it while they were pure.'"
The Prophet granted a concession to travelers: "If a traveler performed ablution and put on leather socks, then he performed a fresh ablution, he could wipe over the leather socks for three days and nights; the resident could do so for one day and one night." (Using translation from Ibn Mājah 556)
[Machine] Narrated from the Prophet ﷺ that he permitted the traveler to shorten the prayers for three days and nights, and for the resident to shorten them for one day and night, if he is in a state of ritual purity. He should then wear his socks and wipe over them, and so on.
[Machine] I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say, "No one goes out of his house seeking knowledge except that the angels spread their wings for him, pleased with what he does." He said, "I came to ask you about wiping over the two socks." He said, "Yes, I was in the army that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ sent, and he commanded us to wipe over the two socks when we put them on in a state of purity, three times when we traveled, and for the duration of a night when we stayed, and we did not remove them for urination, defecation, sleep, or except from janabah." He said, "And I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say, 'Indeed, at Maghrib there is an open gate for repentance, its distance is seventy years, and it does not close until the sun rises from its direction.'"
[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ sent us on a military expedition and said, "Let one of you wipe over his feet if he is a traveler, after he has performed ablution when entering them, for three days and nights. As for the resident, he should wipe over them for a day and a night."
[Machine] Go to Ali, for he used to travel with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ . So I went to him and said, "We are in a cold land with abundant snow. What do you see regarding wearing two pairs of socks?" He replied, "I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ saying, 'For the traveler, three days and their nights, and for the resident, one day and its night, to wipe over his khuff (leather socks) when he puts them on, provided he is in a state of purity and has put them on properly.' Muhammad bin 'Abdul-Rahman bin Abi Laila singled out this narration.
