1. Purification (3/28)
[Machine] We have been prohibited by the messenger of Allah ﷺ from drinking and eating in vessels made of gold and silver, as well as from using an iron spoon and glass cup. He also forbade us from wearing silk clothing and a gold ring.
[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ prohibited eating and drinking from utensils made of gold and silver.
[Machine] So he converted it into a withering vessel and brought it, then he ate it.
1.25 [Machine] Prohibition of squeezing the vessel
[Machine] The Prophet ﷺ said: "Whoever drinks from a vessel made of gold, silver, or any vessel that contains something from them, then he is actually swallowing the fire of Hell." Abu Abdullah al-Hafiz, in his book Fawa'id, narrated this from al-Tusi and al-Fakih together, adding to the chain after his father, from his grandfather, from Ibn Umar. And I think this is a fabrication, as Abu al-Hasan ibn Ishaq has informed us in his book, in the handwriting of Abu al-Hasan al-Daraqutni, may Allah the Most High have mercy on him, as mentioned previously. And likewise.
[Machine] He did not drink from a cup that had a silver ring or a silver lid.
[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ heard about the prohibition of drinking from vessels made of gold and silver. He did not drink from a cracked cup. It has been narrated that Aisha and Anas ibn Malik mentioned this.
[Machine] With Aisha, we stayed with her until she permitted us to wear jewelry, but she did not permit us to use the strainer. Abd al-Wahhab said that Saeed, the son of Abu Arouba, carried him on the ring and similar to it.
[Machine] The Prophet's cup broke, so he made a chain of silver to replace it. Asim said, "I saw the cup and I drank from it." My father said, "I saw the cup and I drank from it, too." Abu Amr informed us: Abu Bakr said: Ali ibn Abbas informed me: Muhammad ibn Ismail al-Bukhari informed me: Abdullah ibn Uthman ibn Jabala informed me: Abu Hamza mentioned a similar narration, except he said "broke" instead of "split."
[Machine] "That the cup of the Prophet ﷺ cracked, so I placed a chain in place of the handle, meaning that Anas placed a chain in place of the handle. The Sheikh, may Allah be pleased with him, said, 'Thus it is in the hadith, I do not know who said it, Musa bin Harun or someone above him?'"
I saw the drinking bowl of the Prophet ﷺ with Anas bin Malik, and it had been broken, and he had mended it with silver plates. That drinking bowl was quite wide and made of Nadar wood, Anas said, "I gave water to the Prophet ﷺ in that bowl more than so-and-so (for a long period)." Ibn Seereen said: Around that bowl there was an iron ring, and Anas wanted to replace it with a silver or gold ring, but Abu Talha said to him, "Do not change a thing that Messenger of Allah ﷺ has made." So Anas left it as it was. (Using translation from Bukhārī 5638)
1.26 [Machine] The purification of various utensils made of stones, glass, sulfur, copper, similar materials, wood, and others.
It was the time for prayer, and those whose houses were near got up and went to their people (to perform ablution), and there remained some people (sitting). Then a painted stove pot (Mikhdab) containing water was brought to Messenger of Allah ﷺs The pot was small, not broad enough for one to spread one's hand in; yet all the people performed ablution. (The sub narrator said, "We asked Anas, 'How many persons were you?' Anas replied 'We were eighty or more"). (It was one of the miracles of Messenger of Allah ﷺ). (Using translation from Bukhārī 195)
[Machine] That the Messenger of Allah ﷺ called for ablution and a cup was brought to him, containing water that was estimated to be a glass. He then placed his fingers in it and the people began to perform ablution, one after the other. I estimated their number to be between seventy and eighty. I then looked at the water as if it was gushing out from between his fingers. Ibn Khuzaymah narrated this report from more than one person other than Hammad ibn Zaid, who said: "It is a fine, glass-like cup." The Sheikh said: It is as he said.
Anas said, "The Prophet ﷺ asked for water and a tumbler with a broad base and no so deep, containing a small quantity of water, was brought to him whereby he put his fingers in it." Anas further said, ' noticed the water springing out from amongst his fingers." Anas added, ' estimated that the people who performed ablution with it numbered between seventy to eighty." (Using translation from Bukhārī 200)
[Machine] Abdullah bin Zaid, a companion of the Prophet, may ﷺ , said, "The Prophet, may ﷺ , came to us and we brought him water in a container made of clay. He performed ablution with it, washing his face three times and his hands up to his elbows two times each. He then wiped his head with the water and proceeded to wash his feet."
When the ailment of the Prophet ﷺ became aggravated and his disease became severe, he asked his wives to permit him to be nursed (treated) in my house. So they gave him the permission. Then the Prophet came (to my house) with the support of two men, and his legs were dragging on the ground, between ʿAbbas, and another man." 'Ubaidullah (the sub narrator) said, "I informed ʿAbdullah bin ʿAbbas of what ʿAisha said. Ibn ʿAbbas said: 'Do you know who was the other man?' I replied in the negative. Ibn ʿAbbas said, 'He was ʿAli (bin Abi Talib)." ʿAisha further said, "When the Prophet ﷺ came to my house and his sickness became aggravated he ordered us to pour seven skins full of water on him, so that he might give some advice to the people. So he was seated in a Mikhdab (brass tub) belonging to Hafsa, the wife of the Prophet. Then, all of us started pouring water on him from the water skins till he beckoned to us to stop and that we have done (what he wanted us to do). After that he went out to the people." (Using translation from Bukhārī 198)
[Machine] In his illness, which he died in, they poured upon me from seven buckets that were not untied nor emptied, in hopes that I would recover and attend to the people. Aisha said, "So we sat him in a container made of copper belonging to Hafsah, and we poured water over him until he motioned to us that we had done enough. Then he left." Muhammad ibn Yahya narrated to us, Abdullah ibn Ahmad ibn Hanbal told me, on the authority of his father, who said: Abdul-Razzaq narrated to us, on the authority of Ma'mar, who reported from Al-Zuhri, who reported from Urwah, who reported from Aisha, with a similar narration, but without mentioning the copper container or the motioning. Muhammad ibn Abdullah al-Hafiz narrated to us, Abu al-Nadr al-Faqih told us, Uthman ibn Sa'id al-Darimi narrated to us, on the authority of Ali ibn al-Madini, hadith 123. And Muhammad ibn Abdullah al-Hafiz narrated to us, Abu al-Nadr told us, Abdullah ibn Ahmad ibn Hanbal narrated to me, on the authority of his father, who said: Abdul-Razzaq narrated to us, on the authority of Ma'mar, who reported from Al-Zuhri, and Urwah reported to me from Amrah, who reported from Aisha. She said something similar, but without mentioning the copper container. This is how it was reported to us in al-Mustadrak, with permission.
[Machine] I used to wash myself along with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ in a container made of leather. One time, a man named Hawthara bin Ashras hurriedly preceded me and took up more space in the container, while some others made it short for Hammad. The man did not mention the name Shu'bah, and some of them sent him (the narration) without mentioning Urwah in its chain of transmission. And thus it goes.
[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ mentioned a woman from the Arabs. Sahal said, "So the Messenger of Allah ﷺ turned towards them that day until he sat in the courtyard of the Banu Sa'idah clan along with his companions. Then he said, 'Give us water to drink, O Sahal.' Sahal said, 'So I brought them this cup and I gave them water to drink from it.' Abu Hazim said, 'So Sahal brought us that cup and we drank from it.' He then gave it to Umar bin Abdul Aziz, and Umar gave it to him as a gift."
1.27 [Machine] Purification in the utensils of the polytheists if impurity is not known
[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ was on a journey with his companions when they became extremely thirsty. Two men from his companions, whom I think were Ali and Zubayr or others, went ahead and found a woman with two water containers on a camel. They said to her, "Answer the call of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ." She asked, "Who is the Messenger of Allah, this Jew?" They replied, "He is the one you are addressing, and he is truly the Messenger of Allah." They brought her to him, and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ commanded that the water be poured into a vessel made from the two containers. He then asked for the water to be returned to the containers, and ordered the loosening of the knots on the containers. They were opened, and the people were instructed to fill their containers and drink. That day, no vessel or container was left un-filled. Imran said, "It seemed as if it wasn't filled except to be filled." The Prophet ﷺ ordered his garment to be spread out, and his companions brought their provisions until his garment was filled. He told the woman to go, saying, "We did not take anything from your water, but it was Allah who gave us to drink." She went and informed her family, saying, "I have met the most knowledgeable person or indeed he is the Messenger of Allah." The people of that village embraced Islam, as reported in Sahihain from the hadith of Awf ibn Abi Jamilah. The last incident is that the Prophet ﷺ gave a container of water to the one who had an impurity. He said to him, "Go and pour it over yourself while standing and see what happens to its water." This was narrated by Abu Abdullah Al-Haafiz, Ahmad ibn Ja'far Al-Qatti'i, Abdullah ibn Ahmad ibn Hanbal, and Yahya ibn Sa'id from Awf, mentioning it in a similar manner.

I was on an expedition along with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. We got the vessels and skins of the polytheists and used them. But he did not object to them (i.e. us) for that (action). (Using translation from Abū Dāʾūd 3838)
[Machine] That Omar performed ablution with water from a Christian woman in a Christian container.
[Machine] "Where did you get this from? I have never seen water from a well or water from the sky that is better than this." He said, "I got it from the house of this elderly Christian woman." So, when she performed ablution, he came to her and said, "O elderly woman, embrace Islam and you will be safe. Allah has sent Muhammad with the truth." Then, she uncovered her head and it appeared as white as a palm splinter. She said, "Am I going to die now?" Umar replied, "Allah knows best."
[Machine] The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ used to be cautious not to drink from a container that belonged to a Christian, as Abu Abdullah reported that Ibrahim ibn Yazid al-Khuzai narrated from Ibn Abi Mulayka who said: the scholar, may Allah have mercy on him, said that Ibrahim ibn Yazid al-Khuzai's narration cannot be relied upon, and it can be interpreted as a form of exaltation for what has passed.
1.28 [Machine] Purifying in their vessels after washing when impurity is known
I came to Messenger of Allah ﷺ and said, "O Messenger of Allah ﷺ! We are living in the land of the people of the Scripture and we take our meals in their utensils, and in the land there is game and I hunt with my bow and trained or untrained hounds; please tell me what is lawful for us of that." He said, "As for your saying that you are living in the land of the people of the Scripture and that you eat in their utensils, if you can get utensils other than theirs, do not eat in their utensils, but if you do not find (other than theirs), then wash their utensils and eat in them. As for your saying that you are in the land of game, if you hung something with your bow, and have mentioned Allah's Name while hunting, then you can eat (the game). And if you hunt something with your trained hound, and have mentioned Allah's Name on sending it for hunting then you can eat (the game). But if you hunt something with your untrained hound and you were able to slaughter it before its death, you can eat of it." (Using translation from Bukhārī 5488)

[Machine] He asked the Messenger of Allah ﷺ saying, "We live next to the People of the Book, and they cook pork in their pots and drink wine in their vessels. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "If you find something else, then eat and drink from it. But if you do not find anything else, then rinse it with water and eat and drink."
[Machine] I asked the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and said, "Indeed, we attack and travel in the land of the polytheists, and we need utensils from their utensils to cook in them." So he said, "Wash them with water and then cook in them and benefit from them." And like that...

1.29 [Machine] Assembly of Siwak Doors
1.30 [Machine] The Virtue of the Siwak
[Machine] Allah ﷺ said, "The siwak (tooth-stick) cleanses the mouth and pleases the Lord." Muhammad bin Yahya bin Abi 'Umar narrated it from Ibn 'Uyaynah, from Mas'ar, from Muhammad bin Ishaq, from 'Abdullah bin Abi 'Atiqah, from 'Aishah. Abu Sa'id Sa'id bin Muhammad Ash-Sha'bi informed me, and Abu Muhammad Al-Hasan bin Ahmad bin Salih As-Sabii'iy Al-Hafiz informed me in Baghdad, dictated by his memory. 'Ali bin 'Abdul Hamid and Abu 'Abdul Rahman As-Sulami also informed us. I am Al-Hasan bin 'Ali Al-Hafiz, 'Ali bin 'Abdul Hamid Al-Ghadhayiri from Halab, narrated to us Muhammad bin Yahya bin Abi 'Umar Al-'Adani, Sufyan bin 'Uyaynah narrated from Mas'ar. He mentioned it in a similar manner except that he said Aishah, the wife of the Prophet ﷺ , said, "I heard the Shaykh Ibn Abi 'Atiqah, who is 'Abdullah bin Muhammad bin 'Abdul Rahman bin Abi Bakr As-Siddiq. And Muhammad was known by the nickname of Aba 'Atiq."
[Machine] The Prophet ﷺ said, "Using the siwak (toothstick) is a means of purification for the mouth and pleasing to the Lord." The Prophet is Muhammad, the son of Abdullah, the son of Abi Atiq, who is related to his grandfather. It is also said that Abdul Rahman narrated this from Qasim ibn Muhammad, as if he heard it from both of them.
ʿThe siwak is cleansing to the mouth and pleasing to the Lordʿ (Using translation from Aḥmad 7)
ʿThe siwak is cleansing to the mouth and pleasing to the Lordʿ (Using translation from Aḥmad 7)
[Machine] I asked Aisha, "With what did the Prophet ﷺ used to start when he entered his house?" She replied, "With the siwak."
[Machine] I came to the Prophet ﷺ and found him cleaning his teeth with a toothstick in his hand, while saying "a'a, a'a" and the toothstick was on his tongue as if he was rinsing his mouth. Isma'il narrated to us from 'Ali ibn 'Abdullah, who narrated from Hammad ibn Zaid, who mentioned it in his chain of narration from Abu Musa, who said: I entered upon the Prophet ﷺ and found him cleaning his teeth with a toothstick and the end of the toothstick was on his tongue.
[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "I have emphasized the use of the toothstick to you a lot."
[Machine] The Prophet ﷺ continued to command us in it until we feared that it would be revealed to him in it.
1.31 [Machine] The evidence that Siwak is a Sunnah and not an obligation
[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "If it were not difficult for my Ummah, I would have commanded them to delay the Isha prayer and use the siwak (toothstick) before every prayer." Abu Sa'id added in his narration: Al-Shafi'i said, "This is evidence that using the siwak is not obligatory, but rather a choice. Because if it were obligatory, he would have either commanded them to do it or not to do it."
[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "If it were not difficult for my ummah, I would have commanded them to use the siwak (tooth stick) with every ablution." This was narrated to us in Al-Fawaid 147. Abu Zakaria ibn Abi Ishaq informed us that Ahmad bin Sulaiman al-Faqih narrated to us, and Harith bin Muhammad narrated to us, and Ruha bin Ubada narrated to us, and Malik bin Anas mentioned it as a hadith from the Prophet. This hadith is well-known by Ruha bin Ubada and Bishr bin Umar al-Zahrani, from Malik.
[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "If it were not difficult for my ummah, I would have made it obligatory for them to use the siwak (toothstick) with every wudu (ablution), and I would have delayed the evening prayer (Maghrib) until half the night."
[Machine] Narrated by the Prophet ﷺ, he said, "If it was not difficult for my Ummah, I would have commanded them to use the Siwak (tooth-stick) with every ablution. And I would have delayed the Isha prayer until the third or halfway through the night." The remaining part of the hadith is not mentioned in this translation. Abu Tahir informed us, Abu Hamid narrated to us, Muhammad ibn Yahya informed us that Ahmad ibn Khalid narrated to us, and Muhammad ibn Ishaq narrated from Sa'id ibn Abi Sa'id Al-Maqburi, from 'Ata'a, the freed slave of Umm Sabiha, from Abu Hurayrah, who said, "I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ saying: 'If it was not a hardship upon my Ummah, I would command them to do so.'" And Muhammad ibn Yahya reported to us, Ya'qub ibn Ibrahim ibn Sa'd said, "My father narrated to me, from his father, from Ibn Ishaq, with a similar wording."
[Machine] The Messenger of Allah, ﷺ , said, "Why do I see you coming to me with disheveled hair? If it were not for the hardship on my Ummah, I would have made it obligatory for them to use the Siwak (toothbrush) just as it is obligatory for them to perform ablution."
[Machine] On the authority of the Prophet ﷺ , he said, "You will come to me as a group of thirsty people, so seek my help." Al-Bukhari said, and Jareer reported from Mansur, who reported from Abu Ali, who reported from Ja'far bin Tamam, who reported from Ibn Abbas, who reported from the Prophet ﷺ in a similar manner. Ath-Thawri also said, "In a similar manner to what we have narrated." Abu Al-Qasim Al-Baghawi narrated it from Ishaq, who narrated it from Ismail At-Talqaani, who narrated it from Jareer through his chain of narrators, from his father, from the Prophet ﷺ . Additionally, Suraaj bin Yoones narrated it from Umar bin Abdul Rahman through his chain of narrators, from his father, from Ibn Abbas, from the Prophet ﷺ . It is also said that this hadith is different in its chain of narrators.
The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: Ten are the acts according to fitrah (nature): clipping the moustache, letting the beard grow, using the tooth-stick, cleansing the nose (Al-Istinshaq) with water, cutting the nails, washing the finger joints, plucking the hair under the arm-pits, shaving the pubes, and cleansing one's private parts (after easing or urinating) with water. The narrator said: I have forgotten the tenth, but it may have been rinsing the mouth. (Using translation from Abū Dāʾūd 53)
1.32 [Machine] Confirmation of Using the Siwak Before Standing for Prayer
[Machine] The Prophet ﷺ said, "If it were not difficult for my nation, I would have commanded them to delay the last 'Isha prayer and to use the Siwak at every prayer." This is a hadith reported by Ibn Uyaynah, and in a hadith by Malik, "I would have commanded them to use the Siwak, and the people did not mention that from Malik."
[Machine] Narrated by Abu Hurairah, the Prophet ﷺ said, "If it were not difficult upon my Ummah (nation), I would have commanded them to use the Siwak (tooth-stick) for every prayer." It has also been narrated by Abu Salamah, from Zaid bin Khalid Al-Juhani.
[Machine] I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ saying, "If it were not difficult for my ummah (community), I would have commanded them to use the siwak (tooth-stick) before every prayer." Abu Salamah said, "I saw Zaid sitting in the masjid, and the siwak was at the place of the pen from the ear of the scribe. Whenever he stood up for prayer, he would use it." Al-Bukhari narrated to me that he used to say that the Hadith of Abu Salamah from Zaid bin Khaled is the most authentic. Abu Isa at-Tirmidhi said, "I consider both of them (the narrators) to be authentic." The Sheikh said, "And the last part of this Hadith has been transmitted from Muhammad bin Ishaq bin Yasir with a chain of narrators from him."
[Machine] The miswak of the Prophet ﷺ was the size of a pen, Abu Al-Qasim said.
[Machine] that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ commanded to perform ablution (wudu) for every prayer, whether in a state of purity or not, and when this became difficult for them, he commanded the use of siwak (toothstick) for every prayer. Ibn Umar saw that it gave him strength, so he never left ablution for any prayer. This is the narration of Ahmad bin Khalid Al-Wahbi, and Saeed mentioned it in his narration from Ubaidullah bin Abdullah, who said that when this became difficult for them, Abu Dawood Ibrahim bin Saad said.
[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "The preferred prayer is the one for which you are summoned over the prayer for which you are not summoned, and this Hadith is one of the things that are feared to be fabrications by Muhammad ibn Ishaq ibn Yasar, and he did not hear it from Az-Zuhri, and he has said
[Machine] "Narrated by the Prophet ﷺ, the two units of prayer (raka'at) after using the toothstick (miswak) are more beloved to me than seventy units of prayer before using the toothstick. This act of worship is not to be used as an argument (in matters of virtue). Aisha also narrated this without mentioning this specific way."
[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "The prayer of one who uses a toothstick (siwak) is better than seventy prayers without using a toothstick. This chain of narration is not strong, and it was narrated in that regard from Jubayr ibn Nufayr as a raised and transmitted hadith, and Allah knows best."
