13. Chapter of Sīn (Male) (22/36)
[Machine] He is called Salim, the servant of Abu Hudhayfah, just as the Prophet ﷺ adopted Zaid and Abu Hudhayfah married Salim, considering him his son from the daughter of his sister Fatimah bint al-Walid ibn Uthbah, who was among the first emigrants and was one of the best days of the Quraysh. When Allah ﷻ revealed in that what He revealed {Invite them to their fathers}, each one of those who were adopted was called to his father, and if his father was not known, he returned to his guardians. Then Sahlah bint Suhayl, who was Abu Hudhayfah's wife and from the Banu 'Amir ibn Lu'ay, came and said, "O Messenger of Allah, we used to consider Salim as our son, and he used to come to me and I am his favor, but we have only one house, so what do you think?" He said to her, "Breastfeed him and he becomes unlawful for you."
[Machine] He was with Abu Bakr on a rooftop during Ramadan while he was praying. Abu Bakr came to him and said, "Don't you eat, O Khalifa of the Messenger of Allah?" He gestured with his hand until he did that twice. When it was the third time, he said, "Bring me your food." So he ate, prayed two Rak'ahs, then entered the mosque and the prayer was established.
[Machine] He told him that his father was safe and had gone to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ while he was a young boy. The Messenger ﷺ smelled his fragrance and prayed for him, and he purified himself from the blessings of his illumination. And that day, he had some white hair on him and had reached or was close to reaching puberty.
[Machine] I asked the Prophet ﷺ , but I couldn't find him. So I sat down and saw a group of five or six people, and a man was treating their wounds. He fixed their wounds on a camel. When the people stood up, a man said, "O Messenger of Allah!" When I heard that, I said, "Peace be upon you, O Messenger of Allah" three times. He said to me three times, "Peace be upon you, the greeting of the dead."
[Machine] We were among the delegation who visited the Messenger of Allah ﷺ . He built two domes for us near the house of Mu'ghirah ibn Shu'bah. Bilal would bring us our breakfast. We would say, "O Bilal, has the Messenger of Allah ﷺ had his breakfast?" He would reply, "Yes, I have not come to you until the Messenger of Allah ﷺ has had his breakfast." Then he would put the food down and we would eat. Bilal would also bring us our pre-dawn meal (Suhur).
[Machine] Our delegation from Taif came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ , and they embraced Islam during the middle of Ramadan. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ instructed them to fast with him for the remaining days of the month, without asking them to make up for the missed days.
I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say: It is great treachery that you should tell your brother something and have him believe you when you are lying. (Using translation from Abū Dāʾūd 4971)

[Machine] Salmah bin Nubayt narrated that Nuaym bin Abi Hind narrated from Nubayt bin Shurayt from Salim bin Ubaid who said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ lost consciousness during his illness and then regained consciousness and asked, "Is the prayer ready?" I said, "Yes." He said, "Ask Bilal to give the adhan and ask Abu Bakr to lead the people in prayer." Aisha said, "Indeed, my father is a man who is very weak. If you order someone else to lead the people in prayer, he will do so. Then the Prophet lost consciousness again and then regained consciousness and asked, "Has the prayer been established?" I said, "Yes." He said, "Ask Bilal to give the adhan and ask Abu Bakr to lead the people in prayer." Aisha said, "Indeed, my father is a man who is very weak. If you order someone else to lead the people in prayer and then he prays with them, he will do so." Then the Prophet lost consciousness again and then regained consciousness and asked, "Has the prayer been established?" I said, "Yes." He said, "Bring me someone whom I can rely on." So Buraydah and another person came and he relied on both of them. The Prophet then entered the mosque and Abu Bakr was standing there leading the people in prayer. Abu Bakr then moved away and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ prevented him from doing so and made him sit next to him until he finished his prayer. Then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ passed away. Umar said, "I do not hear anyone saying that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ has passed away except that I strike him with the sword." He took hold of my arm and relied on me and started walking until we came. He said, "Make room for him." So they made room for him and he approached and touched him and recited, "Indeed, you are destined to die, and indeed, they are destined to die," Then they said, "O companion of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, has the Messenger of Allah ﷺ passed away?" He said, "Yes." So they knew that it was as he had said. They said, "O companion of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, shall we pray for the Messenger of Allah ﷺ?" He said, "Yes." They said, "How should we pray for him?" He said, "A group will enter and make takbeer, supplicate, and pray, then they will leave and another group will come until they finish." They said, "O companion of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, should the Messenger of Allah ﷺ be buried?" He said, "Yes." They said, "Where should he be buried?" He said, "Where he passed away, for indeed Allah did not take him away except from a blessed spot." So they knew that it was as he had said. Then he stood up and said, "Your leader is among you," and he ordered them to wash him. Then he left and the Muhajirun gathered to consult each other. They said, "Go to our brothers among the Ansar, for they have a share in this matter." So they went and a man from the Ansar said, "We have a leader among us and you have a leader among you." Then Umar took the hand of Abu Bakr and said, "Tell me about these three: 'When they were in the cave...' Who are they?" "When one said to his companion, 'Do not be sad...' Who is his companion?" "Indeed, Allah is with us." He took hold of the hand of Abu Bakr and struck it and said to the people, "Give him your pledge of allegiance." So they gave him their pledge of allegiance with a good and beautiful pledge.

[Machine] We were with the Prophet ﷺ and a man sneezed, so he said, "Peace be upon you." Abu Hurairah said, "May the peace and blessings of Allah be upon you." The Prophet ﷺ said, "And upon your mother." Then he said, "When one of you sneezes, let him say, 'Alhamdulillah, Rabbil 'Alamin (Praise be to Allah, the Lord of the Worlds) ' abundantly or 'Alhamdulillah 'ala kulli hal (Praise be to Allah in every circumstance).' Let whoever is with him say, 'Yarhamuk Allah (May Allah have mercy on you),' and let him reply, 'Yaghfirullah (May Allah forgive us) and you.'"

[Machine] I wish you did not mention my mother's name, neither in a good nor a bad way in front of people. He said to him, “I only said to you what the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said.” A man sneezed and said, “Peace be upon you.” The Prophet ﷺ said, “And upon you and your mother.” The Prophet ﷺ also said, “When one of you sneezes, let him say: Alhamdulillah (Praise be to Allah) in every state, and let his brother or companion say to him: Yarhamuk Allah (May Allah have mercy on you), and let him say: Yaghfirullahu lana walakum (May Allah forgive us and you).”

[Machine] He heard Ibn Umar, may Allah have mercy on him, saying: "Salim, the slave of Abu Hudhayfah, used to lead the early emigrants and the Ansar in Masjid Quba, among them were Abu Bakr, Umar, Abu Salamah, Zaid, and Amr ibn Rabee'ah."
[Machine] Salem, a servant of Abu Hudayfa, used to lead the migrants who immigrated to Medina in prayer, among them Umar and others from the migrants, because he was the most knowledgeable among them in the Quran.
[Machine] He informed him that Aisha, the wife of the Prophet ﷺ , informed him that Sahla bint Suhail ibn Amr came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and said, "O Messenger of Allah, Salim, the slave of Hudhayfah, is living with us in our house, and he has reached the age of men and he knows what men know." The Prophet ﷺ said, "Breastfeed him, then he will become unlawful for you."
[Machine] A woman from the family of Abu Hudhaifa came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and said, "Salem, the servant of Abu Hudhaifa, enters upon me while I am in my menses and I find that discomforts me." He ﷺ said, "Breastfeed him, and you will find relief in what you are experiencing."
[Machine] The Prophet ﷺ commanded Sahlah bint Suhail to breastfeed Salim in order to lift the restriction of being mahram to Abu Hudhaifah.
[Machine] Sahla bint Suheil came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and said, "O Messenger of Allah, I see something troubling in the face of my father Hudhayfah." The Prophet ﷺ said, "Breastfeed him." She replied, "But he is old." The Messenger of Allah ﷺ smiled and said, "Don't I know that he is a man?" Then she came again and said, "By the One who has honored you with what He has honored you with, I have not noticed anything in the face of my father Hudhayfah after that."

[Machine] About Salim, the servant of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ , who said: "The wives of the Prophet ﷺ used to part their hair into four sections. When they washed their hair, they would gather it at the center of their heads."
[Machine] I said, "O Messenger of Allah, we are a people from the desert and we would like you to teach us a deed that may benefit us from Allah." He said, "Do not belittle any good deed, even if it is pouring the water from your bucket into the vessel of the one who fetches water or speaking to your brother with a cheerful face."
[Machine] I said, "O Messenger of Allah, we are a people from the desert and we would like for you to teach us an action that Allah may benefit us with." He said, "Do not belittle any good deed, even if it is to pour from your bucket into the container of the one seeking water, or to speak to your brother while your face is cheerful towards him."

[Machine] Abu Jurayy Jabir, I rode a sitting camel to seek him, so I came to Mecca to find him and behold, he was sitting. So I said, "Peace be upon you, O Messenger of Allah." He said, "And upon you." I said, "Indeed, we, the people of the desert, are a rough people, so teach me some speech that Allah may benefit me with." He said, "Fear Allah and do not belittle any good or kindness. Beware of dragging the garment (in pride), as it is from arrogance, and indeed Allah does not love the arrogant." So a man said, "O Messenger of Allah, you mentioned dragging the garment, but it may be that there is a sore or something on the leg that one feels shy about." He said, "There is no harm in dragging it up to halfway up the calf or up to the ankles. Indeed, a man from among those before you wore a burdah (cloak) and he swaggered in it, so Allah looked at him from above His Throne and despised him. So He commanded the earth, and it engulfed him, and he continues to be in it. So beware of the despise of Allah."
[Machine] I came to the Prophet ﷺ while he was wearing a robe with its hem folded up and the edges of it were touching his feet. So I asked, "Which one of you is Muhammad, the Messenger of Allah?" He pointed with his hand to himself. I said, "O Messenger of Allah ﷺ , I am from the Bedouin and I have mistreated them. Please advise me." He said, "Do not belittle any act of kindness, even if it is to meet your brother with a cheerful face. And even if you empty the water from your bucket into the drinking bowl of someone who seeks water. And if someone insults you with something that is true about you, do not insult him with what you know about him, for you will have the reward and he will bear the sin of it. And beware of letting your garment drag on the ground, for dragging the garment is a sign of arrogance. And indeed, Allah does not love arrogance. And do not curse anyone afterwards, for I have not cursed anyone, neither a sheep nor a camel."
I saw a man whose opinion was accepted by the people, and whatever he said they submitted to it. I asked: Who is he? They said: This is the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. I said: On you be peace, Messenger of Allah, twice. He said: Do not say "On you be peace," for "On you be peace" is a greeting for the dead, but say "Peace be upon you". I asked: You are the Messenger of Allah (may peace be upon you)? He said: I am the Messenger of Allah Whom you call when a calamity befalls you and He removes it; when you suffer from drought and you call Him, He grows food for you; and when you are in a desolate land or in a desert and your she-camel strays and you call Him, He returns it to you. I said: Give me some advice. He said: Do not abuse anyone. He said that he did not abuse a freeman, or a slave, or a camel or a sheep thenceforth. He said: Do not look down upon any good work, and when you speak to your brother, show him a cheerful face. This is a good work. Have your lower garment halfway down your shin; if you cannot do it, have it up to the ankles. Beware of trailing the lower garment, for it is conceit and Allah does not like conceit. And if a man abuses and shames you for something which he finds in you, then do not shame him for something which you find in him; he will bear the evil consequences for it. (Using translation from Abū Dāʾūd 4084)

[Machine] I approached a man, and the people were only speaking about him. I said, "By Allah, who is this man?" They said, "This is the Messenger of Allah ﷺ ." I said, "Peace be upon you, O Messenger of Allah." He said, "Do not say 'peace be upon you'; that is the greeting for the deceased, but say 'peace be upon you.' And he mentioned something similar.

[Machine] I heard about the Prophet ﷺ, so I called for my mount and said, "I will come to this man so that I may listen to something from him." So I went to him and found him sitting, wrapped in a cloak. I heard him answering a questioner, saying, "Do not belittle any act of goodness, even if it is to pour water from your bucket into the vessel of one who seeks water, and be cautious of accusing others and making false statements about them. If someone slanders you or says something untrue about you, do not retaliate with slander or say something about them that is not true. Instead, you will earn his reward and the burden will be on him. Do not curse anyone." Therefore, since I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ forbidding cursing, I have not cursed any camel, sheep, or person.

[Machine] The Banu Shababa tribe had a valley full of intelligence. They used to deliver to the Messenger of Allah, ﷺ , honey from a bee colony they owned, with ten portions from every ten portions. They also had two valleys which they protected. When Umar became the caliph, he appointed Sufyan ibn Abdullah al-Thaqafi to manage their affairs. They refused to deliver anything to him and said that they only used to deliver it to the Messenger of Allah, ﷺ . So, Sufyan wrote a letter to Umar informing him of this and Umar wrote back to him saying, "Indeed, bees are flies of sustenance that Allah sends to whom He wills. If they deliver to you what they used to deliver to the Messenger of Allah, ﷺ , then give them their valleys. If not, then create a separation between them and the people. They should deliver to him what they used to deliver to the Messenger of Allah, ﷺ , and protect their valleys."

Ahmed ibn Dawud al-Makki added in his narration: Uruwa said, "Then I met Sufyan ibn Abu Zuhaire at the time of his death, and he informed me of this hadith."
