39. Marriage (2/20)
[Machine] He said that Jibril, ﷺ , came to the Prophet ﷺ and offered him a choice between this worldly life and the Hereafter. He chose the Hereafter and did not desire this worldly life.
[Machine] The Prophet ﷺ was sent a angel that he did not recognize. The angel said, "Indeed, your Lord Almighty gives you the choice to be a Prophet who is a servant or a Prophet who is a king." Jibreel ﷺ pointed to him to be humble and the Prophet said, "I choose to be a Prophet who is a servant."
39.14 [Machine] When he saw something that pleased him, he would say: Here I am, for indeed, life is the life of the hereafter.
[Machine] He said that the Prophet ﷺ used to proclaim, "Labbaik Allahumma Labbaik, Labbaik La Shareeka Laka Labbaik. Innal hamda wan-ni'mata laka wal mulk. La shareeka lak." He continued to repeat it until one day, when people started to distance themselves from him, as if he became fond of it, he increased saying, "Labbaik Innal 'Aish 'Aisha l-Akhirah." Ibn Juraij said, "I thought that this happened on the day of Arafah, but this is a mursal narration. However, it has been reported connected and summarized from Ikrima, from Ibn Abbas. And this statement came from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ in his best state on the day of Hajj at Arafah, and in his most severe state on the day of the Battle of the Trench."
[Machine] "We were with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ at the trench while he was digging, and we were transferring (the dirt). Then he looked at us and said, 'O Allah, the only true life is the life of the hereafter, so forgive the Ansar (supporters) and the Muhajirun (migrants).'"
39.15 [Machine] The Excellence of His Knowledge over Other Knowledge
While I was asleep I saw (in a dream) a cup containing milk being presented to me. I took out of that until I perceived freshness being reflected through my nails. Then I presented the leftover to 'Umar b. Khattab. They said: Messenger of Allah: How do you interpret it? He said: This implies knowledge. (Using translation from Muslim 2391a)
39.16 [Machine] What is narrated about him in his statement: "As for me, I do not eat while reclining"?
[Machine] The Messenger of Allah said: As for me, I do not eat reclining. Abu Al-Qasim Ghailan ibn Muhammad ibn Ibrahim Al-Bazaz reported to us in Baghdad, narrated by Abu Muhammad Dalaj ibn Ahmad, narrated by Mu'adh ibn Al-Muthanna, narrated by Musaddad, narrated by Abu Awanah, from Mansur, from Waraqah, from Ali ibn Al-Aqmar with the same statement.
[Machine] That Allah sent to his prophet a angel with him Gabriel ﷺ , and the angel said to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ , "Indeed, Allah gives you the choice between being a slave Prophet and being an angel Prophet." So the Prophet of Allah ﷺ turned to Gabriel ﷺ as if seeking his advice, and Gabriel pointed to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ to be humble. So the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "No, I will be a slave Prophet." He did not eat any food after that word, reclining, until he met his Lord.
39.17 [Machine] What was narrated about him from his saying: "I was ordered to use the tooth stick until I feared it would harm me.
[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Gabriel has always been advising me to use the Siwak until I feared for my teeth, and so..."
[Machine] "The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, 'I have always used Siwak (tooth stick) to the extent that I feared it could harm me.'"
39.18 [Machine] He did not eat garlic, onions, and leeks and said, "If the king did not come to me, I would have eaten it.
He who eats garlic or onion must keep away from us. Or he said: must keep away from our mosque or must sit in his house. A dish containing green vegetables was brought to him, and noticing that it had an odour he asked (about it). He was told that it contained some vegetables. He then said: Bring it near, to one of his companion who was with him. When he saw it, he abominated eating it, and said: eat for I hold intimate converse with one with whom you do not. Ahmad b. Salih said: Ibn Wahb explained the word badr as meaning dish. (Using translation from Abū Dāʾūd 3822)
39.19 [Machine] He does not speak of his own desire, it is only a revelation inspired.
[Machine] Yala responds to Omar's request saying, "I wish I could see the Messenger of Allah when revelation descends upon him." When the Prophet ﷺ was in Jirana wearing a cloak that was old and patched, with some of his companions nearby, a man came to him with traces of perfume on him. He asked the Messenger of Allah, "O Messenger of Allah, what do you think of a man who has entered ihram while he still has traces of perfume on him?" The Prophet looked at him, and then revelation came to him. Umar pointed to Yala with his hand, signaling him to come. Yala went to him and placed his head into his cloak, and when he lifted his head, his face was red. This lasted for a while, and then he withdrew from him. The Prophet ﷺ asked, "Where is the man who asked me about performing 'Umrah before its time?" The man sought him out, and when he was brought to the Prophet, he said, "As for the perfume on you, wash it off three times, and as for the cloak, take it off. Then perform your 'Umrah as you perform your Hajj." This hadith is mentioned in Ibn Jurayj's narration and also in a narration from Humam, with reference to his father, that a man came to the Prophet ﷺ while he was in Jirana and wearing a cloak, and there were traces of impurity on it.
[Machine] A man came to the Prophet ﷺ and asked, "O Messenger of Allah, which are the best places?" The Prophet ﷺ replied, "I do not know." The man then asked, "Which are the worst places?" The Prophet ﷺ replied, "I do not know." Then, Gabriel ﷺ came to him and said, "O Gabriel, which are the best places?" Gabriel ﷺ replied, "I do not know." The Prophet ﷺ then said, "Ask your Lord." Gabriel ﷺ suddenly startled and nearly fell, and the Prophet ﷺ said, "I do not ask about anything." Then, Allah, the Most High and Majestic, said to Gabriel, "Muhammad has asked you which are the best places. So, tell him that the best places are the mosques and the worst places are the markets." In this sense, there are many narrations.
39.20 [Machine] What has Allah prohibited by saying: "And do not confer favor to acquire more"?
[Machine] In His saying {And whatever you give for interest to increase within the wealth of people will not increase with Allah} [Ar-Rum 39], He is referring to halal interest where one gives with the intention of getting more from it, without any reward or sin in it. The Prophet ﷺ specifically forbade it {And do not confer favor to acquire more} [Al-Mudathir 6]. Abu Abdullah and Abu Bakr ibn al-Hasan informed us, they said: Abu al-Abbas Muhammad ibn Ya'qub narrated to us, who narrated to us Muhammad, who narrated to us Abu Nuaim, who narrated to us Salama ibn Sabur, from Atiyya, from Ibn Abbas {And do not confer favor to acquire more} [Al-Mudathir 6]. He said: Do not give a person in order for him to give you more than what you gave.
39.21 [Machine] The translation of the given heading into English is: "He did not insist on seeing the truth alongside associating with people in person and speech.
[Machine] He said, "Read." I said, "I am not able to read." Then he seized me again and said, "Read." I said, "I am not able to read." He seized me again and said, "{Read in the name of your Lord who created} [Quran 96:1]." Muhammad ibn An-Nu'man said that the Messenger of Allah returned with that, Ibn Shihab said, "I heard Urwah ibn Az-Zubayr say that Aisha said, 'The Prophet ﷺ pushed me and returned to Khadijah trembling. He said, 'Cover me! Cover me!' So, they covered him, and when the fear was gone from him, he said to Khadijah, 'I have been scared for myself.' She said, 'Don't worry! By Allah, Allah will never disgrace you. You keep good relations with your kith and kin, help the poor and the destitute, serve your guests generously, and assist those affected by calamities.' Khadijah then went with him to her cousin Waraqah bin Nawfal, who, during the pre-Islamic period, became a Christian and used to write Arabic writing, and he would write from the Gospel in Arabic as much as Allah wished him to write. He asked, 'O my cousin! What do you see?' Allah's Messenger ﷺ said that Waraqah replied, 'This is the same Angel [Gabriel] who came to Moses. I wish I were young and could live up to the time when your people would turn you out.' Allah's Messenger ﷺ asked, 'Will they drive me out?' Waraqah replied in the affirmative and said, 'Anyone who came with something similar to what you have brought was treated with hostility; and if I should remain alive till the day when you will be turned out, I would support you strongly.'"
[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ says, "Then the revelation was interrupted for some time. While I was walking, I heard a voice from the sky, so I looked up towards the sky and saw the angel who used to come to me sitting on a chair between the sky and the earth. I was terrified and fell to the ground. Then I went to my family and said, 'Cover me! Cover me!' So they covered me, and Allah the Almighty revealed the verse, 'O you who is enveloped, arise and warn, and your Lord glorify, and your garments purify, and the idols forsake' (Quran, Al-Muddathir 2). Abu Salamah said, 'Idols are referred to as "arrajz",' meaning false gods. Then the revelation continued."

The Prophet ﷺ said, "If you knew that which I know, you would laugh little and weep much." (Using translation from Bukhārī 6486)
[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ recited the verse {Has there not come upon man a period of time when he was nothing to be mentioned?} [Al-Insan 1] until he completed it, then he said, "Indeed, I see what you do not see and I hear what you do not hear. The sky has cracked and it has the right to crack, for there is not a space of four fingers except that there is an angel prostrating his forehead to Allah. By Allah, if you knew what I know, you would laugh a little and weep a lot, and you would not enjoy women in beds, but you would go out to the open spaces, seeking refuge with Allah." And by Allah, I wish I were a tree that could be supported." Then he said, "Indeed, the word of 'And by Allah, I wish I were a tree that could be supported' is more beloved to me than the statement of Abu Dharr.''

I said to Jabir b. Samura: Did you sit in the company of the Messenger of Allah (may peace he upon him)? He said: Yes, very often. He (the Holy Prophet) used to sit at the place where he observed the morning or dawn prayer till the sun rose or when it had risen; he would stand, and they (his Companions) would talk about matters (pertaining to the days) of ignorance, and they would laugh (on these matters) while (the Holy Prophet) only smiled. (Using translation from Muslim 670a)
I said to Jabir in Samrah, "Have you sat with the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him?" Jabir said, "Yes, and he would observe silence for long periods of time and seldom laugh. His companions would mention poetry in his presence and some of their affairs. They would laugh and smile at times." (Using translation from Aḥmad 20810)
[Machine] He told us about some of the manners of the Prophet ﷺ and said, "I was his neighbor, so when the revelation came down, he would send for me, and I would come to him and write down the revelation. Whenever we mentioned the worldly life, he would mention it with us, and whenever we mentioned the Hereafter, he would mention it with us, and whenever we mentioned food, he would mention it with us. Should I tell you more about this?"

[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Verily, there is a concern in my heart and I seek forgiveness from Allah a hundred times a day."

that al-Ḥārith b. Hishām ؓ asked Messenger of Allah ﷺ and said, "O Messenger of Allah of Allah, how does the Waḥī (Divine Inspiration) come to you?" The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "(1) Sometimes it comes to me like the ringing of a bell: and this form is the hardest upon me and then ˹this state˺ is lifted off of me after I have grasped what is inspired. And (2) sometimes the Angel comes in the form of a man and talks to me and I grasp whatever he says."
ʿĀʾishah added: "I saw the Waḥī being revealed upon him on an extremely cold day and then ˹the state˺ was lifted from him and his forehead was dripping with sweat." (Using translation from Bukhārī 2)

[Machine] I was with my father in the presence of the Prophet ﷺ , and there was a man who would privately converse with him. So, he acted as if he distanced himself from me. We then left his presence, and my father said, "Did you not see your cousin? He acted as if he distanced himself from me." So, I said to him, "Oh my father, there was a man with him who was conversing with him." He asked, "And who was that man?" I replied, "Yes, there was." So, we returned, and my father said, "O Messenger of Allah, I said to Abdullah such and such, and he said to me such and such. Did you have anyone with you?" He said, "Yes, did you see him, O Abdullah?" I said, "Yes." He said, "That was Jibreel (Gabriel) ﷺ , who was preoccupying me from you."

Whenever a dead man in debt was brought to Messenger of Allah ﷺ he would ask, "Has he left anything to repay his debt?" If he was informed that he had left something to repay his debts, he would offer his funeral prayer, otherwise he would tell the Muslims to offer their friend's funeral prayer. When Allah made the Prophet ﷺ wealthy through conquests, he said, "I am more rightful than other believers to be the guardian of the believers, so if a Muslim dies while in debt, I am responsible for the repayment of his debt, and whoever leaves wealth (after his death) it will belong to his heirs. " (Using translation from Bukhārī 2298)

39.25 [Machine] It was not allowed for him to replace any of his wives, then it was abrogated. Al-Shafi'i said: "Allah, blessed and exalted is He, revealed {It is not lawful for you (to marry other) women after this, nor to change them for other wives} [Al-Ahzab: 52], some of the people of knowledge said: this was revealed to him after he was given the choice of his wives.
[Machine] The Prophet ﷺ received the revelation: "O Prophet, say to your wives, 'If you should desire the worldly life and its adornment, then come, I will provide for you.'" [Surah Al-Ahzab, verse 28] to the end of the two verses. The Prophet ﷺ gave them the choice and they chose Allah and His Messenger, and the Hereafter. Allah appreciated their choice and revealed to the Prophet ﷺ: "O Prophet, indeed We have made lawful to you your wives to whom you have given their due compensation and those your right hand possesses from what Allah has returned to you [of captives]..." [Surah Al-Ahzab, verse 52]
[Machine] When Allah gave them the choice, they chose Allah and His Messenger and the home of the Hereafter. So Allah made it known to them that they will be deprived of it [i.e., marriage and intimacy] through this verse: "It is not lawful for you [to marry] women after [this]..." [translation of Al-Ahzab 52]
[Machine] "The Messenger of Allah ﷺ did not pass away until it was lawful for him to marry women. Al-Shafi'i said that this means those who were forbidden for him in the saying of Allah: 'It is not lawful for you (to marry other) women after this, nor to change them for other wives' (Quran 33:52). And I think Aisha's statement implies that it became lawful for him to marry women by the saying of Allah: 'O Prophet, indeed we have made lawful to you your wives' (Quran 33:50) until His saying: 'Exclusively for you from the believers' (Quran 33:50)."
[Machine] In His statement, "It is not permissible for you to replace women, after [having had] wives, nor to exchange them for other wives" [Al-Ahzab 52], Ibn Jurayj said: Ata narrated to me from Ubayd ibn Umayr from Aisha, who said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ did not pass away until it was permissible for him to marry. However, it was only permissible for him to marry those who had migrated with him. This is clear in the verse and the narration.
[Machine] The Prophet ﷺ asked me for marriage, so I apologized to him. He excused me and then Allah, the Most Blessed and Exalted, revealed: "O Prophet, indeed We have made lawful to you your wives" [Surah Al-Ahzab: 50] until His statement: "Those who emigrated with you" [Surah Al-Ahzab: 50]. I said, 'I did not migrate with him, so how can I be permissible for him?'
39.26 [Machine] The Exclusive Gates of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, not including others of what is permissible and prohibited for him
39.27 [Machine] What is permissible for him concerning women is no more than four. Allah, exalted and blessed be He, said: "Indeed, We have made lawful to you, your wives" [Surah Al-Ahzab: 50] until His saying: "Exclusively for you from the believers" [Surah Al-Ahzab: 50]. So, He made it permissible for him to marry with his wives and to have in addition a fixed number of women who do not have husbands on the day that they are made lawful for him, from the daughters of his paternal uncles, the daughters of his maternal uncles, the daughters of his paternal aunts, and the daughters of his maternal aunts who migrated with him.

[Machine] The Messenger of Allah used to visit his wives day and night, and they were eleven in number. I asked Anas, "Could he afford to have relations with all of them?" Anas replied, "We used to say that he was given the strength of thirty men." This is the wording of the hadith of Muhammad ibn Abi Bakr, and its meaning is also mentioned in the hadith of Ibn Bashshar. In another narration by Ibn Al-Muthanna, it states the strength of forty men. Anas also said, "He [the Prophet] used to visit his wives during the day and night."

[Machine] The writer Al-Bisṭāmī reported from Anba Abū Bakr Al-Ismāʿīlī, who reported from Abū Al-Qāsim Al-Baghawī, who narrated from Mansur ibn Abī Muzāḥim, who narrated from Abū Saʿīd Al-Muaddib, who narrated from Hishām ibn ʿUrwah, who narrated from his father, who narrated from ʿĀ'ishah. She said, "The woman who gifted herself to the Prophet, ﷺ , was Khawlah bint Ḥakīm." Imam Al-Bukhārī, may Allah have mercy on him, referred to this narration and included it in his narration from Muhammad ibn Fuḍayl, who narrated from Hishām, who narrated from his father, who said, "Khawlah was one of the women who gifted themselves to the Messenger of Allah, ﷺ ."

[Machine] I used to envy those who offered themselves to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, and I would say, "Does a woman give herself willingly?" But when Allah ﷻ revealed, "You may defer any of them you wish and take to yourself any you wish" [Quran 33:51], I said, "By Allah, I see that your Lord hurries to fulfill your desires."

[Machine] And he gifted some of his wives to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. He entered upon some of them and divorced others, but he did not approach them until he passed away. After him, none of them married except Umm Sharik. This is what Allah the Exalted said, "You may put off whom you please of them, and you may take to you whom you please, and whom you desire of those whom you had separated provisionally, no blame attaches to you." [Surah Al-Ahzab 51] Thus spoke Ash-Sha'bi.

[Machine] There was no woman with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ who offered herself to him, and if the chain of narrators of this hadith is authentic, it seems as if he ﷺ rejected them, even if it was lawful for him, and Allah knows best.

[Machine] A narrated incident in which the Prophet Muhammad, ﷺ , found a young she-camel. It was said to him, "O Messenger of Allah, a beautiful young she-camel has been found." He then bought it for nine dirhams and gave it to Umm Sulaim to take care of and prepare. It is estimated that she was maid in her house and her name was Safiyyah, daughter of Huwayy. The Prophet, ﷺ , provided the dates, meat, and ghee for her. The land was plowed and then the sheep were brought and slaughtered. Dates and ghee were added, and the people were satisfied. The people then asked, "We do not know if he married her or took her as a concubine." He replied, "If he covered her, then she is his wife, and if he did not cover her, then she is a concubine." When he intended to mount her on the camel, he covered her until she sat on the camel's saddle. They knew then that he had married her.

When the 'Iddah of Zainab was over, Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to Zaid to make a mention to her about him. Zaid went on until he came to her and she was fermenting her flour. He (Zaid) said: As I saw her I felt in my heart an idea of her greatness so much so that I could not see towards her (simply for the fact) that Messenger of Allah ﷺ had made a mention of her. So I turned my back towards her. and I turned upon my heels, and said: Zainab, Messenger of Allah ﷺ has sent (me) with a message to you. She said: I do not do anything until I solicit the will of my Lord. So she stood at her place of worship and the (verse of) the Qur'an (pertaining to her marriage) were revealed, and Messenger of Allah ﷺ came to her without permission. He (the narrator) said: I saw that Messenger of Allah ﷺ served us bread and meat until it was broad day light and the people went away, but some persons who were busy in con- versation stayed on in the house after the meal. Messenger of Allah ﷺ also went out and I also followed him, and he began to visit the apartments of his wives greeting them (with the words): As-Salamu 'alaikum, and they would say: Messenger of Allah, how did you find your family (hadrat Zainab)? He (the narrator) stated: I do not know whether I had informed him that the people had gone out or he (the Holy Prophet) informed me (about that). He moved on until he entered the apartment, and I also went and wanted to enter (the apartment) along with him, but he threw a curtain between me and him, as (the verfes pertaining to seclusion) had been revealed, and people were instructed in what they had been instructed. Ibn Rafii had made this addition in his narration:" O you who believe, enter not the houses of the Prophet unless permission is given to you for a meal, not waiting for its cooking being finished..." to the words"... Allah forbears not from the truth." (Using translation from Muslim 1428b)

[Machine] Zainab bint Jash, one of the wives of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ , used to boast and say, "Indeed, Allah married me from the heavens, and the verse of hijab (veiling) was revealed therein." People gathered in the Prophet's house, then he came out and they saw the joy on his face. Then the verse of hijab was revealed: "O you who have believed, do not enter the houses of the Prophet except when permitted for a meal" [Surah Al-Ahzab 33:53].

If you bear witness that there is no god but Allah, and that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah, offer prayer, pay zakat, pay the fifth from the booty, and the portion of the Prophet ﷺ and his special portion (safi), you will be under by the protection of Allah and His Apostle." We then asked: Who wrote this document for you? He replied: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ. (Using translation from Abū Dāʾūd 2999)

[Machine] Umar sent for me and invited me. I entered upon him, and he was sitting on sand. He said, "O Malik, affliction has occurred to us from your people, so take this money and divide it among them." I said, "O Amir al-Mu'minin, is this not (the duty of) someone else?" He said, "Take it from yourself, O man." So I sat and Yarfa' came and said, "Do you have any claim against 'Abd al-Rahman, Talhah, Zubayr, and Sa'd?" I said, "Tell them to enter." So they entered and Yarfa' said, "Do you have any claim against 'Ali and 'Abbas?" I said, "Tell them to enter." So they entered and each one of them spoke to his companion. When they sat down, they said, "O Amir al-Mu'minin, settle between them and have mercy on both of them." He said, "I adjure you both by Allah, in whose hand is the control of the heavens and the earth, do you both know that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, 'We do not leave any inheritance; whatever we leave behind is charity?' meaning, so they said, "Yes." He then said that to others and the people said, "Yes." He said, "And he (the Prophet) said, 'Indeed, the wealth of the Banu Nadir is from the spoils that Allah has given to His Messenger, which the Muslims have not fought against with horses or camels. So it became exclusively for the Messenger of Allah ﷺ , who would spend from it for his family for a year. What remained, he designated for the needy, weaponry, and charity for the sake of Allah. Then it became exclusively for the Prophet ﷺ .'" They both narrated it to me from the Hadith of Sufyan briefly.

Malik ibn Aws al-Hadthan said: One of the arguments put forward by Umar was that he said that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ received three things exclusively to himself: Banu an-Nadir, Khaybar and Fadak. The Banu an-Nadir property was kept wholly for his emergent needs, Fadak for travellers, and Khaybar was divided by the Messenger of Allah ﷺ into three sections: two for Muslims, and one as a contribution for his family. If anything remained after making the contribution of his family, he divided it among the poor Emigrants. (Using translation from Abū Dāʾūd 2967)
