I said to Jabir in Samrah, "Have you sat with the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him?" Jabir said, "Yes, and he would observe silence for long periods of time and seldom laugh. His companions would mention poetry in his presence and some of their affairs. They would laugh and smile at times." (Using translation from Aḥmad 20810)   

البيهقي:١٣٣٣٩حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو بَكْرِ بْنُ فُورَكٍ أنبأ عَبْدُ اللهِ بْنُ جَعْفَرٍ ثنا يُونُسُ بْنُ حَبِيبٍ ثنا أَبُو دَاوُدَ ثنا شَرِيكٌ وَقَيْسٌ عَنْ سِمَاكِ بْنِ حَرْبٍ قَالَ

قُلْتُ لِجَابِرِ بْنِ سَمُرَةَ أَكُنْتَ تُجَالِسُ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ؟ قَالَ نَعَمْ قَالَ كَانَ طَوِيلَ الصَّمْتِ قَلِيلَ الضَّحِكِ وَكَانَ أَصْحَابُهُ رُبَّمَا تَنَاشَدُوا عِنْدَهُ الشِّعْرَ وَالشَّيْءَ مِنْ أُمُورِهِمْ فَيَضْحَكُونَ وَرُبَّمَا تَبَسَّمَ

قُلْتُ لِجَابِرِ بْنِ سَمُرَةَ أَكُنْتَ تُجَالِسُ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ؟ قَالَ نَعَمْ وَكَانَ طَوِيلَ الصَّمْتِ قَلِيلَ الضَّحِكِ وَكَانَ أَصْحَابُهُ يَذْكُرُونَ عِنْدَهُ الشِّعْرَ وَأَشْيَاءَ مِنْ أُمُورِهِمْ فَيَضْحَكُونَ وَرُبَّمَا تَبَسَّمَ

[Machine] I asked Jabir ibn Samurah, "Did you used to sit with the Prophet ﷺ?" He said, "Yes, and he was often silent and rarely laughed. The companions of the Prophet ﷺ used to exchange poems, and the Prophet ﷺ would smile."
