39. Marriage (4/20)
[Machine] I am the mother of your men, but I am not your mother.
39.57 [Machine] The names of the Prophet's wives and daughters and the marriage of his daughters, and in this is an indication that his saying: "Their mothers" [Al-Ahzab: 6] means in a symbolic sense, and that is because it is not permissible for them to marry them by law, and it is not forbidden for them to marry their daughters if they have daughters, as it is forbidden for them to marry the daughters of their mothers who gave birth to them or breastfed them.

[Machine] He informed him that Aisha, the wife of the Prophet ﷺ , said that Dihak ibn Sufyan from the tribe of Abu Bakr ibn Kilaab entered upon the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and said to him, "There is a veil between me and them, O Messenger of Allah. Do you have any intention to marry the sister of Um Shabeeb?" Um Shabeeb is the wife of Dihak ibn Sufyan. In another narration, it is mentioned that Dihak ibn Sufyan from the tribe of Abu Bakr ibn Kilaab recommended her to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ . Then the rest is mentioned: Al-Zuhri said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ married a woman from the tribe of Amr ibn Kilaab, the brother of Abu Bakr ibn Kilaab, a tribal alliance of Zuhra, Zufar ibn Al-Harith. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ entered upon her and saw her fairness, so he divorced her without consummating the marriage. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ then married the sister of Banu al-Jawn al-Kindi, who were the allies of Banu Fazara. She sought refuge and he said to her, "Indeed, you have sought refuge in a great thing. Go back to your people." So he divorced her without consummating the marriage. He had a Coptic slave woman called Maryam, who gave birth to a son called Ibrahim for him. He died while he was a baby, and the cradle was filled. He also had a freed slave woman called Rayhana bint Shamuun from the people of the scripture, from the Banu Khanaqa. They are a sub-tribe of the Banu Qurayza. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ emancipated her, and they claim that she was veiled.

She was previously married to Al-Fadl bin Abbas bin Abdul Muttalib, but the Messenger of Allah, ﷺ , divorced her before consummating the marriage. So, he named these two wives who were not named by Al-Zuhri, and he did not mention Al-Aaliyah.

[Machine] I have an uncle named Hussein Al-Ju'fi. My son, do you know why Uthman is called "Dhun-Nurain"? I said, "I don't know." He said, "Allah has not combined any daughter of a prophet with anyone since He created Adam until the Day of Judgment except for Uthman ibn Affan. That is why he is called 'Dhun-Nurain'." Al-Shafi'i said, "Zainab bint Umm Salamah married Abdullah ibn Zama'ah, and Az-Zubayr ibn Al-Awwam married Asma bint Abu Bakr, and Talha married their sister. They are the sisters of the mothers of the believers. And Abdul Rahman ibn Auf married the daughter of Jash, who is the sister of the mother of the believers, Zainab, daughter of Jash, and this is clear in the narrations. And all of this indicates that the wives of the Prophet ﷺ became mothers of the believers, and their daughters did not become their sisters, nor did their sisters become their aunts. And Allah knows best.

[Machine] It means that Allah, may He be exalted, informed you, the wives of the Prophet ﷺ , that you have the greatest right to piety. He said before that: "O wives of the Prophet! Whoever among you commits an open indecency..." [al-Ahzab 33:30]. Mujahid said: it means disobedience to the Prophet ﷺ . "For her the punishment shall be doubled" [al-Ahzab 33:30]. In the Hereafter. "And that is easy for Allah" [al-Nisa' 33:30]. He says: and her punishment will be easy for Allah. "Whoever of you obeys Allah and His Messenger" [al-Ahzab 33:31], it means whoever obeys Allah and His Messenger among you. "and does righteous deeds" [al-Ahzab 33:31], in the Hereafter, for every prayer, fasting, charity, saying "Allahu akbar" (Allah is the greatest), or saying "subhan Allah" (glory be to Allah) with the tongue, it will be recorded as twenty good deeds. "And We have prepared for her a generous provision" [al-Ahzab 33:31], it means good and that is Paradise.

39.59 [Machine] What can be inferred from the Prophet's actions in relation to marital rulings and the permissibility of certain things for women and prohibition of certain things due to impurity, is that it does not contradict what is generally permissible for people. Imam Shafi'i, may Allah have mercy on him, said that this includes how he would divide his time among his wives.

So he gave it to me and I cut it, chewed it (it's end) and gave it to Messenger of Allah ﷺ who cleaned his teeth with it while he was resting against my chest." (Using translation from Bukhārī 4450)

On the authority of his father that 'Aishah said: O my nephew, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ did not prefer one of us to the other in respect of his division of the time of his staying with us. It was very rare that he did not visit us any day (i.e. he visited all of us every day). He would come near each of his wives without having intercourse with her until he reached the one who had her day and passed his night with her. When Saudah daughter of Zam'ah became old and feared that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ would divorce her, she said: Messenger of Allah, I give to 'Aishah the day you visit me. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ accepted it from her. She said: We think that Allah, the Exalted, revealed about this or similar matter the Qur'anic verse: "If a wife fears cruelty or desertion on her husband's part...." Al-Shafi'i, may Allah have mercy on him, said that Allah has commanded to follow what He has commanded and avoid what He has forbidden, and Allah has obliged this in His book for His creation. And what is in the hands of people other than this is only what they hold onto from Allah, then from the Prophet, may ﷺ , then from his evidence. However, his saying, 'If he said it, the people should not hold onto anything from me or other than me,' implies that when the Prophet, may ﷺ , was in a position of leadership, he had privileges that were permissible for him but not permissible for the people. But if it is what is on me specifically and not on them, then they should not hold onto it.' This is like Allah allowing him, may His praise be exalted, to have as many wives as He wills and to divorce a woman if she presents herself to him, and Allah, the Exalted, said: 'A privilege for you [alone], not for the [rest of the] believers.' So no one could say that the Messenger of Allah, may ﷺ , combined more than four women or married a woman without a dowry or took a fifth of the spoils, because that would not be allowed for the believers before him or after him or for their offspring. Allah has made it clear in His book and on the tongue of His Messenger, may ﷺ , that this is specific to him, and Allah has obliged that He give his wives the choice to stay with him or leave. So no one can say that I have the choice to make my wife do what Allah has obliged on His Messenger, may ﷺ . This is the meaning of the Prophet's saying, 'If he said it, the people should not hold onto anything from me.' The Shaykh clarified that al-Shafi'i, may Allah have mercy on him, only sought the authenticity of the narration, so he said, 'If he said it,' because the hadith is mursal and there is nothing that confirms it except that it coincides with what al-Shafi'i, may Allah have mercy on him, said, making it clear and consistent with the principles."

[Machine] He heard Al-Miqdam ibn Ma'di Karib Al-Kindi, a companion of the Prophet ﷺ , saying that the Prophet ﷺ forbade certain things on the day of Khaybar, including the domestic donkey and others. So, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "It is likely that one of you will be sitting on his couch and narrating my hadiths, and he will say, 'Between you and me is the Book of Allah. Whatever we find in it as permissible, we consider it as permissible, and whatever we find in it as forbidden, we consider it as forbidden. Indeed, whatever the Messenger of Allah ﷺ forbids, it is as though Allah has also forbidden." And thus...

While I was walking with 'Abdullah at Mina, 'Uthman happened to meet him. He stopped there and began to talk with him. Uthman said to him: Abu 'Abd al-Rahman, should we not marry you to a young girl who may recall to you some of the past of your bygone days; thereupon he said: If you say so, Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: 0 young men, those among you who can support a wife should marry, for it restrains eyes from casting (evil glances). and preserves one from immorality; but those who cannot should devote themselves to fasting for it is a means of controlling sexual desire. (Using translation from Muslim 1400a)

[Machine] We entered upon Abdullah and he had a date and some black grapes with him. He narrated a hadeeth which I did not see anyone else narrating except for my sake, for I used to memorize the hadeeths of the people. Abdullah said, "We were with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ when we were young and had nothing. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, 'O youth! Whoever among you can afford to marry, let him do so, for it is more effective in lowering the gaze and guarding chastity. And whoever cannot afford it, then he should fast, for it will be a shield for him.'"

A group of three men came to the houses of the wives of the Prophet ﷺ asking how the Prophet ﷺ worshipped (Allah), and when they were informed about that, they considered their worship insufficient and said, "Where are we from the Prophet ﷺ as his past and future sins have been forgiven." Then one of them said, "I will offer the prayer throughout the night forever." The other said, "I will fast throughout the year and will not break my fast." The third said, "I will keep away from the women and will not marry forever." Messenger of Allah ﷺ came to them and said, "Are you the same people who said so-and-so? By Allah, I am more submissive to Allah and more afraid of Him than you; yet I fast and break my fast, I do sleep and I also marry women. So he who does not follow my tradition in religion, is not from me (not one of my followers). (Using translation from Bukhārī 5063)

Another said: "I will not sleep on a bed." Another said: "I will fast and not break my fast." News of that reached the Messenger of Allah and he praised Allah then said: "What is the matter with people who say such and such? But I pray and I sleep, I fast and I break my fast, and I marry women. Whoever turns away from my Sunnah is not of me." (Using translation from Nasāʾī 3217)

39.64 [Machine] The Merits of Marrying Someone of the Same Religion
[Machine] "On the authority of the Prophet ﷺ , he said: Women are married for four reasons, for their wealth, their lineage, their beauty, and their religion. Therefore, choose the one with religion, may your hands be covered in dust."
It was narrated from Jabir that he married a woman at the time of the Messenger of Allah, and the Prophet met him and said: "Have you got married, O Jabir?" He said: 'Yes.' He said: 'A virgin or a previously-married woman?' I said: 'A previously-married woman.' He said: 'Why not a virgin who would play with you?' I said: 'O Messenger of Allah, I have sisters, and I did not want her to come between them and I.' He said: 'That's better then. A woman may be married for her religious commitment, her wealth or her beauty. You should choose the one who is religiously committed, may your hands be rubbed with dust (may you prosper).'" (Using translation from Nasāʾī 3226)
[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Verily, the entire world is a provision, and the best provision of the world is a righteous woman."
[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ says, "Do not marry women for their beauty, as their beauty may cause them to become arrogant. And do not marry women for their wealth, as their wealth may lead them to be disobedient. Rather, marry them for their faith. A black slave woman who is pious is better than a beautiful woman who is irreligious." This is the preferred wording of the hadith of Ibn Bashran, and in the narration of Abu Zakariyya may Allah have mercy on him, it is said "a hyena." And Allah knows best.
39.65 [Machine] The desirability of marriage with virgins
When I got married, Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to me, "What type of lady have you married?" I replied, "I have married a matron' He said, "Why, don't you have a liking for the virgins and for fondling them?" Jabir also said: Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Why didn't you marry a young girl so that you might play with her and she with you?' (Using translation from Bukhārī 5080)
[Machine] "And Sulaiman and Musaddad converge in the wording, and the wording is for Sulaiman. They said: Thana Hammad ibn Zaid from Amr ibn Dinar from Jabir ibn Abdullah, and he said: Abdullah died and left seven or nine daughters. Jabir said: So, I married a widow. So, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to me: "Did you get married, O Jabir?" I said: Yes. He said: A virgin or a widow? I said: Rather, a widow, O Messenger of Allah. He said: Then why not marry a young girl whom you can play with, she can play with you, laugh with her, and she can laugh with you? I said: O Messenger of Allah, Abdullah died and left seven or he said nine daughters, and I disliked to marry them off to someone of their own age. So, I preferred to marry them off to a woman who can take care of them. So, he said: May Allah bless you or he said: Good for you."

[Machine] I asked, "O Messenger of Allah, if you were to descend into a valley where there were trees, some of which had been eaten from, and you found a tree that had not been eaten from, which one would you pasture?" He replied, "I would pasture the tree that has not been eaten from." She said, "That means that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ did not marry any virgin apart from me."
