39. Marriage (5/20)
[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "Choose young women in marriage, as their mouths are the sweetest, their wombs are more fertile, and they are satisfied with less." Abu Abdullah and the qadi (judge) in their narration, Ibn Uwaym ibn Sa'idah 13474, told us that Ali ibn Ahmad ibn Abdan informed us that Ahmad ibn Ubayd al-Saffar narrated to us, that Khalaf ibn Amr al-Anbari narrated to us, that Abdullah ibn Zubayr al-Humaydi narrated to us, that Muhammad ibn Talhah narrated to me, that Abdur Rahman ibn Salim ibn Abdur Rahman ibn Uwaym ibn Sa'idah mentioned it with a similar chain of narration, and Abdur Rahman ibn Uwaym did not have companionship. Al-Qa'nabi informed me that what reached him from him is that he meant having more children.
39.66 [Machine] The virtues of marrying a loving and fertile spouse
A man came to the Prophet ﷺ and said: I have found a woman of rank and beauty, but she does not give birth to children. Should I marry her? He said: No. He came again to him, but he prohibited him. He came to him third time, and he (the Prophet) said: Marry women who are loving and very prolific, for I shall outnumber the peoples by you. (Using translation from Abū Dāʾūd 2050)
[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to command us to perform ablution and prohibit us from excessive spitting. He would strongly forbid it and say, "Marry the loving and fertile women, for I will be boasting in numbers on the Day of Resurrection with the prophets among you."
It was narrated that Abu Hurairah said: "It was said to the Messenger of Allah: 'Which woman is best?' He said: 'The one who makes him happy when he looks at her, obeys him when he commands her, and she does not go against his wishes with regard to herself nor her wealth.'" (Using translation from Nasāʾī 3231)
[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "The best of your women are the affectionate, the fertile, the dutiful, and those who console and comfort their husbands. And the worst of your women are the ones who display themselves, those who pretend and imagine things, and they are the hypocrites. None of them will enter Paradise except like the crawling of a black beetle." And it was narrated with an authentic chain of narration from Sulaiman bin Yasar, from the Prophet ﷺ , as a saying attributed to him until his statement, "when they fear Allah."
[Machine] What a servant gains after believing in Allah is no better than a woman with good character, friendly, and kind. And what a servant gains after disbelief in Allah is no worse than a seductive woman with a sharp tongue and bad character. By Allah, among them (women) are those who are like sheep, from whom one can benefit, and among them are those who are like crops that can be redeemed.
[Machine] Umar said, "By Allah, no man has benefited after Islam better than a beautiful and good-natured woman, loving and loved. And by Allah, no man has brought harm after associating partners with Allah worse than an ill-natured woman with a sharp tongue. By Allah, among them, there is a boy who is worth sacrificing for and a sheep that leads to destruction."
39.67 [Machine] Encouragement for marrying someone with good religion and character
[Machine] "When someone whose religion and character you are pleased with comes to you, then marry them. If you do not do so, there will be corruption and great mischief on earth." In another narration, they said, "O Messenger of Allah, even if he has defects?" He replied, "If someone whose religion and character you are pleased with comes to you, then marry them." This was narrated three times by Abu Hatim Al-Muzani, who had companionship with him. A similar narration is also mentioned from Asma bint Abi Bakr, who said, "Marriage is nothing but honor. So look carefully where your honor lies." This narration is reported as "marfu'" (i.e. directly attributed to the Prophet), and the "mawquf" (i.e. attributed to a Companion) version is considered more authentic. And Allah, the Most Exalted, knows best.
39.68 [Machine] Who abandons the worship of Allah if their soul does not incline towards marriage?" Imam Al-Shafi'i, may Allah have mercy on him, said: Allah, the Most Blessed and Exalted, mentioned the rules regarding women and did not forbid them from sitting. He did not also encourage them towards marriage. He mentioned a noble servant and said, "And as a leader and a chaste one." (Quran 3:39) And the chaste one is the one who does not approach women and does not encourage himself towards marriage.
[Machine] In His saying, Almighty Allah has revealed {a master and chaste}. Al-Hasuur, which means someone who does not approach women, is mentioned.
[Machine] عِكْرِمَةَ can be translated to English as "generosity."
By Allah except Whom none has the right to- be worshipped, (sometimes) I used to lay (sleep) on the ground on my liver (abdomen) because of hunger, and (sometimes) I used to bind a stone over my belly because of hunger. One day I sat by the way from where they (the Prophet ﷺ and his companions) used to come out. When Abu Bakr passed by, I asked him about a Verse from Allah's Book and I asked him only that he might satisfy my hunger, but he passed by and did not do so. Then ʿUmar passed by me and I asked him about a Verse from Allah's Book, and I asked him only that he might satisfy my hunger, but he passed by without doing so. Finally Abu-l-Qasim (the Prophet ﷺ ) passed by me and he smiled when he saw me, for he knew what was in my heart and on my face. He said, "O Aba Hirr (Abu Huraira)!" I replied, "Labbaik, O Messenger of Allah ﷺ!" He said to me, "Follow me." He left and I followed him. Then he entered the house and I asked permission to enter and was admitted. He found milk in a bowl and said, "From where is this milk?" They said, "It has been presented to you by such-and-such man (or by such and such woman)." He said, "O Aba Hirr!" I said, "Labbaik, O Messenger of Allah ﷺ!" He said, "Go and call the people of Suffa to me." These people of Suffa were the guests of Islam who had no families, nor money, nor anybody to depend upon, and whenever an object of charity was brought to the Prophet, he would send it to them and would not take anything from it, and whenever any present was given to him, he used to send some for them and take some of it for himself. The order of the Prophet upset me, and I said to myself, "How will this little milk be enough for the people of As- Suffa? though I was more entitled to drink from that milk in order to strengthen myself", but behold! The Prophet ﷺ came to order me to give that milk to them. I wondered what will remain of that milk for me, but anyway, I could not but obey Allah and His Apostle so I went to the people of As-Suffa and called them, and they came and asked the Prophet's permission to enter. They were admitted and took their seats in the house. The Prophet ﷺ said, "O Aba-Hirr!" I said, "Labbaik, O Messenger of Allah ﷺ!" He said, "Take it and give it to them." So I took the bowl (of milk) and started giving it to one man who would drink his fill and return it to me, whereupon I would give it to another man who, in his turn, would drink his fill and return it to me, and I would then offer it to another man who would drink his fill and return it to me. Finally, after the whole group had drunk their fill, I reached the Prophet ﷺ who took the bowl and put it on his hand, looked at me and smiled and said. "O Aba Hirr!" I replied, "Labbaik, O Messenger of Allah ﷺ!" He said, "There remain you and I." I said, "You have said the truth, O Messenger of Allah ﷺ!" He said, "Sit down and drink." I sat down and drank. He said, "Drink," and I drank. He kept on telling me repeatedly to drink, till I said, "No. by Allah Who sent you with the Truth, I have no space for it (in my stomach)." He said, "Hand it over to me." When I gave him the bowl, he praised Allah and pronounced Allah's Name on it and drank the remaining milk. (Using translation from Bukhārī 6452)

[Machine] A woman came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and said, "O Messenger of Allah, I am so and so, daughter of so and so." He said, "I know who you are, so what do you need?" She said, "I am in need of marrying my cousin Fulan Al-Abid." He said, "I know him." She said, "He proposed to me, so tell me the rights of the husband over his wife. If it is something I can bear, I will marry him, and if it is something I cannot bear, I will not marry him." He said, "The right of the husband over his wife is that if he exposes his nostrils and it is full of blood, pus, and mucus, and she licks it with her tongue, she has fulfilled his right. If it was obligatory for a human being to prostrate to another human being, I would have ordered the woman to prostrate to her husband because of the great superiority that Allah has granted him." She said, "By the One who sent you with the truth, I will not marry as long as I live in this world."

I was in the company of Messenger of Allah ﷺ when there came a man and informed him that he had contracted to marry a woman of the Ansar. Thereupon Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: Did you cast a glance at her? He said: No. He said: Go and cast a glance at her, for there is something in the eyes of the Ansar. (Using translation from Muslim 1424a)
[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "When one of you proposes to a woman and is satisfied with what he sees from her and is drawn to her, then let him proceed." Jabir said, "I proposed to a woman from the tribe of Salimah and I used to hide in the date palm trees until I saw something that pleased me, then I married her."

Mughirah bin Shubah wanted to marry a woman. The Prophet ﷺ said to him: “Go and look at her, for that is more likely to create love between you.” So he did that, and married her, and mentioned how well he got along with her. (Using translation from Ibn Mājah 1865)

It was narrated that Al-Mughirah bin Shu'bah said: "I proposed marriage to a woman during the time of the Messenger of Allah, and the Prophet said: 'Have you seen her?' I said: 'No.' He said: 'Look at her, for that is more likely to create love between you.'" (Using translation from Nasāʾī 3235)
[Machine] I proposed to a woman, and I mentioned her to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ . He asked me, "Have you looked at her?" I said, "No." He said, "Then look at her, for it is more likely to foster love and compatibility between you." So, I went to her, and her parents were with her while she was wearing a veil. I said, "The Messenger of Allah ﷺ has commanded me to look at you." Both she and her parents fell silent. Then, the girl lifted a corner of her veil and said, "If the Messenger of Allah ﷺ commanded you to look at me, then look. But if he did not command you, then do not look." I looked at her, and then I married her. I have never been with a woman who surpassed her in status. I have married seventy or seventy-one women.

[Machine] Its called Thubaytah, the daughter of Al-Dhahak, the sister of my father Jabirah. I said, "Are you doing this while you are the companion of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ?" He said, "Yes, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, 'When Allah places the desire for a woman in the heart of a man, it is permissible for him to look at her.' This narration has different chains of transmission, and its main source is Al-Hajjaj ibn Artat, and what has been mentioned is sufficient. Some people of knowledge have used this argument in this matter based on what is known."

The Messenger of Allah ﷺ looked at her, moved his gaze away from her, and corrected her. Then he lowered his head. When the woman saw that he did not show any interest in her, she sat down and they discussed a narration that had been reported by Qutaybah in Sahih.

He said: O Asma', when a woman reaches the age of menstruation, it does not suit her that she displays her parts of body except this and this, and he pointed to his face and hands. Abu Dawud said: This is a mursal tradition (i.e. the narrator who transmitted it from 'Aishah is missing) Khalid b. Duraik did not see 'Aishah. (Using translation from Abū Dāʾūd 4104)

[Machine] The Prophet ﷺ visited Aisha bint Abi Bakr, who was with her sister Asma bint Abi Bakr. Aisha was wearing loose, wide-sleeved Syrian robes. When the Prophet ﷺ looked at her, he stood up and left. Aisha told her sister, "Move away, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ has seen something he dislikes." So she moved away and then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ entered. Aisha asked him, "Why did you stand up?" He replied, "Did you not see her appearance? It is not appropriate for a Muslim woman to reveal more than this and this." Then he took his hands and covered the back of his hands with them, so that only his fingers were visible from his hand. Then he placed his hands on his cheeks, so that only his face was visible. This narration has a weak chain of transmission.

[Machine] The Prophet wanted to marry a woman, so he sent a woman to observe her. He told her to smell her perfume and look at her wrists. She came back to them and they asked her if they should provide her with food, she said, "I don't eat except from the food that Fulanah brought." Then, she climbed on a shelf they had and I looked at her wrists. Then, she said, "Kiss me, my dear son." So he started kissing her while she smelled her perfume. Then, she came back and told them this information.

39.72 [Machine] The reason for the revelation of the verse of hijab
I was ten years old when Messenger of Allah ﷺ arrived at Medina. My mother and aunts used to urge me to serve the Prophet ﷺ regularly, and I served him for ten years. When the Prophet ﷺ died I was twenty years old, and I knew about the order of Al-Hijab (veiling of ladies) more than any other person when it was revealed. It was revealed for the first time when Messenger of Allah ﷺ had consummated his marriage with Zainab bint Jahsh. When the day dawned, the Prophet ﷺ was a bridegroom and he invited the people to a banquet, so they came, ate, and then all left except a few who remained with the Prophet ﷺ for a long time. The Prophet ﷺ got up and went out, and I too went out with him so that those people might leave too. The Prophet ﷺ proceeded and so did I, till he came to the threshold of ʿAisha's dwelling place. Then thinking that these people have left by then, he returned and so did I along with him till he entered upon Zainab and behold, they were still sitting and had not gone. So the Prophet ﷺ again went away and I went away along with him. When we reached the threshold of ʿAisha's dwelling place, he thought that they had left, and so he returned and I too, returned along with him and found those people had left. Then the Prophet ﷺ drew a curtain between me and him, and the Verses of Al-Hijab were revealed. (Using translation from Bukhārī 5166)

When Allah's Apostle ﷺ married Zainab bint jahsh, he invited people (to the wedding feast) and they ate food. They then sat there and entered into conversation. He (the Holy Prophet) made a stir as if he was preparing to stand up, but (the persons busy in talking) did not stand up. When he (the Holy Prophet) saw it, he stood up and when he did so, some other persons stood up. 'Asim and Abd al-A'la in their narrations made this addition: Three (persons) sat there, and Allah's Apostle ﷺ came there to enter (the apartment) but he found the people sitting there. Then they stood up and went away. He said: Then I came and informed Allah's Apostle ﷺ that they had gone away. He (the Holy Prophet) then came there until he entered (the apartment). I also went and was about to enter, when he hung a curtain between me and him (and it was on this occasion that) Allah, the Exalted and Majestic, revealed this verse:" O you who believe, enter not the houses of the Prophet unless permission is given to you for a meal, not waiting for its cooking being finished to the (words)" Surely this is serious in the sight of Allah" (xxxiii. 53). (Using translation from Muslim 1428e)

I agreed with my Lord, may He be glorified and exalted, in three matters - or my Lord agreed with me in three matters, I said: O Messenger of Allah, why don't you take the Maqarn of Ibraheem as a place of prayer? Then Allah revealed the verse: ʿAnd take you (people) the Maqam (place) of Ibraheem (Abraham) [or the stone on which Ibraheem (Abraham) stood while he was building the Ka'bah) as a place of prayerʿ (al Baqarah 2:125). And I said: Why don't you tell the Mothers of the Believers to observe hijab, for both righteous people and evildoers enter upon you? Then the verse of hijab was revealed. And I heard something about the Mothers of the Believers, so I talked to them and told them: You should stop bothering the Messenger of Allah ﷺ , or Allah will replace you with wives who are better than you and are Muslims. Then I came to one of the Mothers of the Believers and she said: O 'Umar, is it the case that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ cannot admonish his wives so that you come and admonish them? So I stopped, then Allah, may He be glorified and exalted, revealed the verse: “It may be if he divorced you (all) that his Lord will give him instead of you, wives better than you Muslims (who submit to Allah), believers, obedient (to Allah)...ʿ [at-Tahreerm 66:5) (Using translation from Aḥmad 160)

[Machine] The Prophet's wife said, "The wives of the Prophet used to go out at night to relieve themselves in the open fields, and it was a very distant plain. Umar bin Al-Khattab used to say to the Prophet, 'Let your wives be veiled,' but the Prophet would not do that. So Suda, the wife of the Prophet's companion Zeid bin Haritha, went out at night for a meal and Umar called out to her, 'We recognize you, O Suda, to ensure that the veil is lowered.' Aisha said, 'So the veil was revealed.' Abu Abdullah Al-Hafiz told us, Bashr bin Ahmad Al-Isfariyini informed me from his book, Dawud bin Al-Husayn, who is Al-Khisrojardi, reported from Abdul Malik bin Shuayb bin Layth, who narrated from my grandfather, who said: Oqail bin Khalid mentioned a similar incident and added that she was a tall woman, so Umar called out to her, 'We recognize you.'"

[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "Verily, Allah has decreed for the son of Adam his share of adultery which he inevitably will commit. The adultery of the eyes is looking, the adultery of the tongue is speaking, and the soul desires and longs for it, and the private parts confirm or deny it."
Abu Huraira reported Messenger of Allah ﷺ as saying. Allah fixed the very portion of adultery which a man will indulge in. There would be no escape from it. The adultery of the eye is the lustful look and the adultery of the ears is listening to voluptuous (song or talk) and the adultery of the tongue is licentious speech and the adultery of the hand is the lustful grip (embrace) and the adultery of the feet is to walk (to the place) where he intends to commit adultery and the heart yearns and desires which he may or may not put into effect. [Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "For every son of Adam, there is a share of zina. The eyes commit zina through their gaze, and their zina is looking. The hands commit zina through their touch, and their zina is grasping. The feet commit zina through their walk, and their zina is walking. The mouth commits zina, and its zina is kissing. The heart desires and wishes, and it either confirms or denies it." Abu Hurairah heard and witnessed this.

He replied, "Perform Hajj on behalf of your father and also approach Al-Fadl to perform Hajj on behalf of his cousin." Al-Abbas said to him, "O Messenger of Allah, if only you had instructed Al-Fadl to perform Hajj on behalf of his cousin." The Prophet ﷺ said, "I saw a young man and a young girl who were not guarded against Satan, so we narrated this incident in the Book of Hajj from the Hadith of Ibn Abbas, with some of its meanings."

Avoid sitting in the roads. The people said: Apostle of Allah! We must have meeting places in which to converse. The apostle of Allah ﷺ said: If you insist on meeting, give the road its due.
