10. Zakāh (Prescribed Charity) (12/13)
[Machine] God Almighty said, "And they were not commanded except to worship Allah, [being] sincere to Him in religion, inclining to truth, and to establish prayer and to give zakah. And that is the correct religion." [Al-Bayyinah: 5]
[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "O Abu Dharr, do not belittle any good deed, even if it is as little as meeting your brother with a cheerful face. And if you were to pour the contents of your bucket into the container of the one seeking water in order to provide for them, or if you were to increase the broth of your pot when cooking and share it with your neighbors."
[Machine] "From the Messenger of Allah, ﷺ , he said: Every good deed is a charity." And in the narration of Abu Dawud, he said: "Your Prophet, ﷺ , said."
[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "There is no envy except in two [cases]: a man whom Allah has given the Quran, and he recites it day and night, and a man whom Allah has given wealth, and he spends it day and night."
Messenger of Allah ﷺ I said, "Not to wish to be the like of except two men: A man whom Allah has taught the Qur'an and he recites it during the hours of the night and during the hours of the day, and his neighbor listens to him and says, 'I wish I had been given what has been given to so-and-so, so that I might do what he does; and a man whom Allah has given wealth and he spends it on what is just and right, whereupon an other man May say, 'I wish I had been given what so-and-so has been given, for then I would do what he does." (Using translation from Bukhārī 5026)
[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ gave us an example of the world, using four people as examples. One man was given knowledge and wealth by Allah, and he uses his knowledge in his wealth. Another man was given knowledge by Allah but not wealth, so he says if Allah had given him what He gave the other person, he would do the same. They are equal in reward. Another man was given wealth but not knowledge, so he withholds his right and spends it in vain. Another man was not given knowledge or wealth, so he says if Allah had given him what He gave the other person, he would do the same. They are equal in sin.
10.142 [Machine] The rewards of someone who fasts, follows a funeral, feeds a poor person, and visits a sick person.
Who fasted among you today? Abu Bakr (Allah be pleased with him) replied: I did. He (the Prophet again) said: Who among you followed a bier today? Abu Bakr (Allah be pleased with him) replied: I did. He (the Prophet again) said: Who among you fed a poor man today? Abu Bakr (Allah he pleased with him) replied: I did. He (again) said: Who among you visited an invalid today? Abu Bakr (Allah be pleased with him) said: I did. Upon this the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: Anyone in whom (these good deeds) are combined will certainly enter paradise. (Using translation from Muslim 1028)
[Machine] "Bakiru bil-sadaqati; fa inna al-bala'a la yatakhatta al-sadaqata mauqoofun wa kana fi kitabi Shaykhina Abi Nasrin al-Famiyyi marfu'an wa huwa wahmun wa ruiya 'an Abi Yusufa al-Qadi 'ani al-mukhtari bni Fulfulin marfu'an."
"Give charity tomorrow, for calamity does not surpass the donation. It is recorded in the book of our Sheikh Abi Nasr al-Famiyyi, and it is elevated, and it was narrated from Abi Yusufa al-Qadi from al-Mukhtari ibn Fulful, and it is also elevated."
10.143 [Machine] The Virtue of Giving True and Abundant Charity
[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ was asked, "Which charity is better?" He replied, "You should be informed that it is better to give charity while you are healthy and stingy, considering the eternal life and fearing poverty, without delaying it. However, when it reaches your throat, you say to so-and-so and so-and-so, except for so-and-so, even though it was for so-and-so."
[Machine] A man entrusted me with a portion of his wealth, which I took and went to Abu Darda. I consulted him regarding giving it to the poor or the immigrants. He said, "As for me, if I were to straddle the immigrants, I have heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ saying, 'The example of the one who gives charitable gifts at death is like one who brings his charity to the people while he is full, not in need.'"
[Machine] I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say, "The likeness of one who gives charity or frees a slave at the time of death is like the one who gives gifts after having his fill."
[Machine] About Abdullah in the saying of Allah, "And they give food, in spite of their love for it, to the needy, the orphan, and the captive..." [Surah Al-Baqarah, verse 177]. He said, "Give charity even when you are healthy and wealthy, and contemplate wealth while fearing poverty."
10.144 [Machine] The Excellence of Secret Charity
[Machine] Narrated by the Prophet, ﷺ , he said: "There are seven whom Allah will shade with His shade on the Day when there is no shade except His shade: a just ruler, a man whose heart is attached to the mosques, two men who love each other for the sake of Allah, meeting for His sake and parting for His sake, a man who is invited by a woman of great beauty and high status but he says: 'I fear Allah', a man who gives charity and conceals it, to such an extent that his left hand does not know what his right hand spends, and a man who remembers Allah (alone) in seclusion and his eyes overflow with tears."
10.145 [Machine] The virtue of giving charity from halal wealth.
[Machine] The Messenger of Allah said: "Whoever gives in charity a date from lawful earnings, and does not take anything except what is good, then Allah accepts it with His right hand and nurtures it for its owner as one of you nurtures a foal until it becomes like the mountain of Uhud.”
[Machine] That the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "No one gives charity with a date from lawful earnings, except that Allah takes it in His right hand and nurtures it as one of you nurtures his foal or young camel until it becomes like a mountain or even greater."
[Machine] I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ saying, "Allah does not accept prayer except with purification, and charity is not accepted from ill-gotten wealth. And you were in Basra."
10.146 [Machine] Al-Mannan with what He has given
"The Messenger of Allah said: "There are three to whom of Allah will not speak on the Day of Resurrection or look at them or purify them, and theirs will be a painful torment: the one who reminds people of what he has given them, the one who lets his garment hang beneath his ankles, and a vendor who tries to sell his product by means of false oaths." (Using translation from Nasāʾī 2564)
10.147 [Machine] The voluntary charity to the polytheist and to the one whose action is not praised.
[Machine] They surrender themselves to their relatives while they are polytheists, so the verse was revealed "It is not upon you, [O Muhammad], to guide them. But Allah guides whom He wills." [Quran 2:272] until it reached "and you are not to blame" [Quran 2:272]. He gave them permission.
[Machine] I asked the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, "If my mother comes to me in need, should I give to her?" He said, "Yes, offer prayers for her. Sa'dan reported it from Sufyan."
[Machine] "My mother expressed a desire to return to the era of Quraysh, so I asked the Messenger of Allah ﷺ if I should fulfill her wish. He said, yes. Sufyan said, and in it was revealed the verse {Allah does not forbid you from those who do not fight you} [Al-Mumtahina 8]."
Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "A man said that he would give something in charity. He went out with his object of charity and unknowingly gave it to a thief. Next morning the people said that he had given his object of charity to a thief. (On hearing that) he said, "O Allah! All the praises are for you. I will give alms again." And so he again went out with his alms and (unknowingly) gave it to an adulteress. Next morning the people said that he had given his alms to an adulteress last night. The man said, "O Allah! All the praises are for you. (I gave my alms) to an adulteress. I will give alms again." So he went out with his alms again and (unknowingly) gave it to a rich person. (The people) next morning said that he had given his alms to a wealthy person. He said, "O Allah! All the praises are for you. (I had given alms) to a thief, to an adulteress and to a wealthy man." Then someone came and said to him, "The alms which you gave to the thief, might make him abstain from stealing, and that given to the adulteress might make her abstain from illegal sexual intercourse (adultery), and that given to the wealthy man might make him take a lesson from it and spend his wealth which Allah has given him, in Allah's cause." (Using translation from Bukhārī 1421)
10.148 [Machine] The man is entrusted with giving charity, so the trustee gives fully what he is commanded.
[Machine] Narrated by the Prophet ﷺ : A trustworthy treasurer is one who fulfills the orders entrusted to him completely, provides it adequately, and maintains sincere intentions until he delivers it to one of the recipients, whether they are a person giving charity or the individuals who will receive the charity.
10.149 [Machine] The woman donates from her husband's house with a small non-corrupting thing.
[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "If a woman feeds from her husband's house without causing harm, she will have her reward and he will have the same. And the one who is in charge of the provisions will have a similar reward for what he has earned, and she will have it for what she has spent."
[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "When a woman spends from the food of her house, without causing harm, she will have the reward for what she spent, and her husband will have the reward for what he earned, and the one who manages the expenses will have a similar reward. None of them will have their reward reduced due to the reward of another."
[Machine] And the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said that a woman should not fast while her husband is present without his permission, and she should not give permission in her house while he is present without his permission. And whatever she spends from her own earnings without his command, then half of his reward belongs to him.
[Machine] When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ received allegiance from the women, a noble woman stood up as if she was one of the women of Mudar and said, "O Messenger of Allah, do we eat from our fathers and sons?" Abu Dawud said, "And I see in it and in the narration of Sulayman ibn Harb on our sons and wives, so what is permissible for us from their wealth?" He said, "You can eat and provide with the wet (fresh) food." He said, "In the narration of Ibn Sawwar, there is no mention of food, and Sufyan al-Thawri narrated it from Yunus ibn 'Ubayd."
[Machine] And it was narrated to us by Abu Tahir al-Faqih, who told us by way of Abu Abdullah al-Saffar al-Asbahani, who narrated to us by way of Abdullah ibn Ahmad ibn Hanbal, who narrated to me through my father, who narrated to me by way of Abdul Malik ibn Abdul Rahman al-Dhimmari, who narrated to me through Sufyan, who narrated to me through Yunus ibn Ubayd, who narrated to me through Ziyad ibn Jubayr, who narrated to me through Saad, that a woman said, "O Messenger of Allah, shall we eat from the wealth of our fathers and brothers?" The Prophet ﷺ said, "You may eat from their ripe dates and give as charity."

[Machine] There is no god but Allah, and the reward lies between them. It is not permissible for her to give charity from the wealth of her husband without his permission. This is the statement of Abu Hurairah, one of the narrators of these reports.
[Machine] I asked the mothers of the believers, Aisha, Hafsa, and Umm Salamah, "What is permissible for a woman from her husband's house?" Each of them picked up a stick from the ground and said, "No, this does not weigh anything except with his permission."
[Machine] The woman takes something from her husband's house without his permission, so he becomes angry, upset, and disapproves of what she said. She tells her not to steal gold or silver from him, or to take anything from his house. And he mentioned the saying.
[Machine] Abu Umamah heard me say that I witnessed the Messenger of Allah ﷺ during the Farewell Pilgrimage and I heard him say, mentioning the hadith within it, "Verily, it is not permissible for a woman to give any of her husband's wealth except with his permission." A man said, "O Messenger of Allah, not even food?" He said, "That is the best of our wealth."

[Machine] About the Prophet ﷺ regarding the rights of a husband over his wife, he said, "Do not give anything from your house without his permission. If you do so, you will be rewarded while bearing the burden of sin." Abu Bakr ibn Furak informed us that Abdullah ibn Jafar narrated to us on the authority of Yunus ibn Habib, who narrated on the authority of Abu Dawud, who narrated on the authority of Jarir, who mentioned it.

I was the slave (of Abi'l-Lahm). I asked the Messenger of Allah ﷺ if I could give some charity out of my master's wealth. He said: Yes, and the reward is half and half between you two. (Using translation from Muslim 1025a)
My master commanded me to cut some meat in strips; (as I was doing it) a poor man came to me and I gave him some of it to eat. My master came to know of that, and he beat me. I came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and narrated it to him. He (the Holy Prophet) summoned him and said: Why did you beat him? He (Abi'l-Lahm) said: He gives away my food without being commanded to do so. Upon this he (the Holy Prophet) said: The reward would be shared by you two. (Using translation from Muslim 1025b)
[Machine] My lord commanded me to give a dirham every day, so I went to Abu Hurairah and he said, "Fear Allah and fulfill the rights of Allah upon you and the rights of your dependents. For you do not own anything from your wealth or your blood, except that you extend your hand or feed a poor person a morsel." And among those who have been reported that it is permissible for him to donate a small amount of his wealth are Abu Hurairah, Sa'id bin Al-Musayyib, Sa'id bin Jubayr, Al-Hasan Al-Basri, Ash-Sha'bi, An-Nakha'i, Az-Zuhri, and Mak'hul, except that Mak'hul made an exception that he can enjoy it.

[Machine] "Allah gives an example of a slave who owns nothing and cannot do anything. He does not offer any charity unless he has a herd of cattle to graze. Then a man with a severed throat due to thirst comes to him, fearing that he will die if he is not given water. So, the slave gives him water (7862). Wahb said that Al-Ansari narrated to us, Isma'il narrated to us, Ata narrated from Jabir that he was asked about the slave, does he offer any charity? He said, 'He does not offer any charity.'"
[Machine] "To spend from his wealth without giving it to anyone except by the permission of his master, unless he utilizes it for good or clothes oneself. The transmitted hadith indicates that it is possible that the intention of the Prophet ﷺ was to encourage the owner of wealth to allow his slaves to give charity on his behalf, and the reward is between them. And what is apparent from the permissibility is more deserving for the one who desires to follow the Sunnah. And with Allah is the facilitation."

The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: “For one of you to take a rope and go to the mountains, then bring a bundle of firewood on his back and sell it, and make himself independent of means thereby, is better for him than to ask of people, whether they give him something or not.” (Using translation from Aḥmad 1429)

[Machine] I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ saying, "It is better for one of you to wake up in the morning and gather firewood on his back, give it in charity, and become self-sufficient rather than asking someone for help. Some of the Ansar begged from the Messenger of Allah (May peace be upon him) and he gave them something. They later begged from him again and he gave them something so that what he had was exhausted. He then said :What I have I shall never store away from you but Allah will strengthen the abstinence of him who abstains, will give a satisfaction to him who wants to be satisfied, and will strengthen the endurance of him who shows endurance. No one has been given a more ample gift than endurance. (Using translation from Abū Dāʾūd 1644)

[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Do not insist on asking so much, for by Allah, no one among you asks me anything that causes me to give something from myself while I dislike it, except that he will be blessed in it." This is the wording of the hadith of Sufyan.
Hakim bin Hizam said, "(Once) I asked Messenger of Allah ﷺ (for something) and he gave it to me. Again I asked and he gave (it to me). Again I asked and he gave (it to me). And then he said, "O Hakim! This property is like a sweet fresh fruit; whoever takes it without greediness, he is blessed in it, and whoever takes it with greediness, he is not blessed in it, and he is like a person who eats but is never satisfied; and the upper (giving) hand is better than the lower (receiving) hand." Hakim added, "I said to Messenger of Allah ﷺ , 'By Him (Allah) Who sent you with the Truth, I shall never accept anything from anybody after you, till I leave this world.' " Then Abu Bakr (during his caliphate) called Hakim to give him his share from the war booty (like the other companions of the Prophet ﷺ ), he refused to accept anything. Then ʿUmar (during his caliphate) called him to give him his share but he refused. On that ʿUmar said, "O Muslims! I would like you to witness that I offered Hakim his share from this booty and he refused to take it." So Hakim never took anything from anybody after the Prophet ﷺ till he died. We, nine, eight or seven men, were in the company of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and he said: Why don't you pledge allegiance to the Messenger of Allah? -while we had recently pledged allegiance. So we said: Messenger of Allah, we have already pledged allegiance to you. He again said: Why don't you pledge allegiance to the Messenger of Allah? And we said: Messenger of Allah, we have already pledged allegiance to you. He again said: Why don't you pledge allegiance to the Messenger of Allah? We stretched our hands and said: Messenger of Allah. we have already pledged allegiance to you. Now tell (on what things) should we pledge allegiance to you. He said I (You must pledge allegiance) that you would worship Allah only and would not associate with Him anything, (and observe) five prayers, and obey- (and he said onething in an undertone) -that you would not beg people of anything. (And as a consequence of that) I saw that some of these people did not ask anyone to pick up the whip for them if it fell down. (Using translation from Muslim 1043)
[Machine] Thawban, the freed slave of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ , said that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Whoever does me a favor, I will reciprocate by admitting him into Paradise." Thawban said, "O Messenger of Allah, it is me!" He ﷺ replied, "Do not ask people for anything." Thawban said, "Sometimes my whip falls while I am on my camel, and I cannot retrieve it until someone comes down and gives it to me." This hadith was narrated by Abu Al-'Aliyah, from Thawban.
10.154 [Machine] The man asks the sultan about a necessary matter that must be righteous.
[Machine] That the Prophet ﷺ said, "Issues are like burdens that a person carries on his face. Whoever wants, he can keep them on his face, and whoever wants, he can leave them, except if a person asks about something that he cannot find a way out of or has authority over." Zaid ibn 'Uqbah said, "So I narrated it to Al-Hajjaj ibn Yusuf and he said, 'Ask me, for I have authority.'"
