(the slave of Ibn ʿAbbas) Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to Muʿadh when he sent him to Yemen, "You will go to the people of the Scripture. So, when you reach there, invite them to testify that none has the right to be worshipped but Allah, and that Muhammad is His Apostle. And if they obey you in that, tell them that Allah has enjoined on them five prayers in each day and night. And if they obey you in that tell them that Allah has made it obligatory on them to pay the Zakat which will be taken from the rich among them and given to the poor among them. If they obey you in that, then avoid taking the best of their possessions, and be afraid of the curse of an oppressed person because there is no screen between his invocation and Allah." قَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ لِمُعَاذٍ حِينَ بَعَثَهُ إِلَى الْيَمَنِ إِنَّكَ سَتَأْتِي قَوْمًا أَهْلَ كِتَابٍ فَإِذَا جِئْتَهُمْ فَادْعُهُمْ إِلَى أَنْ يَشْهَدُوا أَنْ لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا اللهُ وَأَنَّ مُحَمَّدًا رَسُولُ اللهِ فَإِنْ هُمْ أَطَاعُوا لَكَ بِذَلِكَ فَأَخْبِرْهُمْ أَنَّ اللهَ قَدْ فَرَضَ عَلَيْهِمْ خَمْسَ صَلَوَاتٍ فِي كُلِّ يَوْمٍ وَلَيْلَةٍ فَإِنْ هُمْ أَطَاعُوا لَكَ بِذَلِكَ فَأَخْبِرْهُمْ أَنَّ اللهَ قَدْ فَرَضَ عَلَيْهِمْ صَدَقَةً تُؤْخَذُ مِنَ أَغْنِيَائِهِمْ فَتُرَدُّ عَلَى فُقَرَائِهِمْ فَإِنْ هُمْ أَطَاعُوا لَكَ بِذَلِكَ فَإِيَّاكَ وَكَرَائِمَ أَمْوَالِهِمْ وَاتَّقِ دَعْوَةَ الْمَظْلُومِ فَإِنَّهُ لَيْسَ بَيْنَهُ وَبَيْنَ اللهِ حِجَابٌ  

[Machine] My nephew, let me tell you a story. I was once in a tribe of these tribes during the time of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ . I had a sheep, and two men came to me on a camel and said, "We are messengers of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ to you, to give the charity from your sheep." I asked, "What do I have in it?" They replied, "A pregnant ewe." I went to a ewe that I knew was full of milk and fat, and I brought it to them. They said, "This is the Shafi'i sheep, and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ prohibited us from taking a Shafi'i. I asked, "Then what do you want?" They said, "We want a young shrub or a two-year-old lamb." I went to a pregnant ewe that had not yet given birth, and its birth was near, and I brought it to them. They said, "Hand it to us." They placed it with them on their camel, and then they left. This is what Waki' said, and the correct narration is that the ewe was in labor. And Mus'ab bin Thafana said, and the correct narration is that the narrator is Muslim bin Shu'ba. Yahya bin Ma'in and others from the Hadith scholars narrated it. Abu al-Hasan bin Abdan told us that Ahmad bin Ubayd al-Saffar narrated to us, who narrated from Al-Harith bin Abi Usama, who narrated from Ruha bin Ubada, who narrated from Zakariya bin Ishaq, who narrated from Amr bin Abi Sufyan, who narrated to me Muslim bin Shu'ba. He mentioned the hadith in its meaning and added, "The ewe that had its offspring in its womb."

Note: This is a translation of a passage from a hadith, a saying or action of the Islamic prophet Muhammad ﷺ . The passage discusses a situation where the narrator gives a charity of a sheep to two messengers of the Prophet, but they inform him that they cannot accept a sheep that is prohibited by the Prophet. They request a young shrub or a two-year-old lamb instead. The narrator then brings a pregnant ewe that has not yet given birth to them, and they accept it.  

ابْنَ أَخِي فَإِنِّي أُحَدِّثُكَ أَنِّي كُنْتُ فِي شِعْبٍ مِنْ هَذِهِ الشِّعَابِ عَلَى عَهْدِ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ فِي غَنَمٍ لِي فَجَاءَنِي رَجُلَانِ عَلَى بَعِيرٍ فَقَالَا لِي إِنَّا رَسُولَا رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ إِلَيْكَ لِتُؤَدِّيَ صَدَقَةَ غَنَمِكَ فَقُلْتُ مَا عَلَيَّ فِيهَا؟ فَقَالَا شَاةٌ فَأَعْمِدُ إِلَى شَاةٍ قَدْ عَرَفْتُ مَكَانَهَا مُمْتَلِئَةً مَحْضًا وَشَحْمًا فَأَخْرَجْتُهَا إِلَيْهِمَا فَقَالَا هَذِهِ شَاةُ الشَّافِعِ وَقَدْ نَهَانَا رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ أَنْ نَأْخُذَ شَافِعًا قُلْتُ فَأَيَّ شَيْءٍ تَأْخُذَانِ؟ قَالَا عَنَاقًا جَذَعَةً أَوْ ثَنِيَّةً قَالَ فَأَعْمِدُ إِلَى عَنَاقٍ مُعْتَاطٍ وَالْمُعْتَاطُ الَّتِي لَمْ تَلِدْ وَلَدًا وَقَدْ حَانَ وِلَادُهَا فَأَخْرَجْتُهَا إِلَيْهِمَا فَقَالَا نَاوِلْنَاهَا فَجَعَلَاهَا مَعَهُمَا عَلَى بَعِيرِهِمَا ثُمَّ انْطَلَقَا كَذَا قَالَ وَكِيعٌ مَحْضًا وَالصَّوَابُ مَخَاضًا وَقَالَ مُسْلِمُ بْنُ ثَفِنَةَ وَالصَّوَابُ مُسْلِمُ بْنُ شُعْبَةَ قَالَهُ يَحْيَى بْنُ مَعِينٍ وَغَيْرُهُ مِنَ الْحُفَّاظِ 7278 أَخْبَرَنَاهُ أَبُو الْحَسَنِ بْنُ عَبْدَانَ أنبأ أَحْمَدُ بْنُ عُبَيْدٍ الصَّفَّارُ ثنا الْحَارِثُ بْنُ أَبِي أُسَامَةَ ثنا رَوْحُ بْنُ عُبَادَةَ ثنا زَكَرِيَّا بْنُ إِسْحَاقَ ثنا عَمْرُو بْنُ أَبِي سُفْيَانَ حَدَّثَنِي مُسْلِمُ بْنُ شُعْبَةَ فَذَكَرَ الْحَدِيثَ بِمَعْنَاهُ زَادَ فِيهِ وَالشَّافِعُ الَّتِي فِي بَطْنِهَا وَلَدُهَا  

The Messenger of Allah ﷺ commissioned me as a collector of zakat. I visited a man. When he had collected his property of camels, I found that a she-camel in her second year was due from him. I said to him: Pay a she-camel in her second year, for she is to be paid as sadaqah (zakat) by you. He said: That one is not worthy of milking and riding. Here is another she-camel which is young, grand and fat. So take it. I said to him: I shall not take an animal for which I have not been commanded. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ is here near to you. If you like, go to him, and present to him what you presented to me. Do that; if he accepts it from you, I shall accept it; if he rejects it, I shall reject it. He said: I shall do it. He accompanied me and took with him the she-camel which he had presented to me. We came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. He said to him: Prophet of Allah, your messenger came to me to collect zakat on my property. By Allah, neither the Messenger of Allah nor his messenger has ever seen my property before. I gathered my property (camels), and he estimated that a she-camel in her second year would be payable by me. But that has neither milk nor is it worth riding. So I presented to him a grand young she-camel for acceptance as zakat. But he has refused to take her. Look, she is here; I have brought her to you, Messenger of Allah. Take her. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: That is what is due from you. If you give voluntarily a better (animal) Allah will give a reward to you for it. We accept her from you. She is here, Messenger of Allah; I have brought her to you. So take her. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ then ordered me to take possession of it, and he prayed for a blessing on his property. بَعَثَنِيَ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ مُصَدِّقًا فَمَرَرْتُ بِرَجُلٍ فَجَمَعَ لِي مَالَهُ فَلَمْ أَجِدْ عَلَيْهِ فِيهَا إِلَّا ابْنَةَ مَخَاضٍ فَقُلْتُ لَهُ أَدِّ ابْنَةَ مَخَاضٍ فَإِنَّهَا صَدَقَتُكَ فَقَالَ ذَاكَ مَا لَا لَبَنَ فِيهِ وَلَا ظَهْرَ وَلَكِنْ هَذِهِ نَاقَةٌ عَظِيمَةٌ سَمِينَةٌ فَخُذْهَا فَقُلْتُ مَا أَنَا بِآخِذٍ مَا لَمْ أُومَرْ بِهِ وَهَذَا رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ مِنْكَ قَرِيبٌ فَإِنْ أَحْبَبْتَ أَنْ تَأْتِيَهُ فَتَعْرِضَ عَلَيْهِ مَا عَرَضْتَ عَلَيَّ فَافْعَلْ فَإِنْ قَبِلَهُ مِنْكَ قَبِلْتُهُ وَإِنْ رَدَّهُ عَلَيْكَ رَدَدْتُهُ قَالَ فَإِنِّي فَاعِلٌ قَالَ فَخَرَجَ مَعِي وَخَرَجَ مَعَهُ بِالنَّاقَةِ الَّتِي عَرَضَ عَلَيَّ حَتَّى قَدِمْنَا عَلَى رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ فَقَالَ لَهُ يَا نَبِيَّ اللهِ أَتَانِي رَسُولُكَ لِيَأْخُذَ مِنْ صَدَقَةِ مَالِي وَايْمُ اللهِ مَا قَامَ فِي مَالِي رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ وَلَا رَسُولُهُ قَطُّ قَبْلَهُ فَجَمَعْتُ لَهُ مَالِي فَزَعَمَ أَنَّ مَا عَلِيِّ فِيهِ ابْنَةُ مَخَاضٍ وَذَلِكَ مَا لَا لَبَنَ فِيهِ وَلَا ظَهْرَ وَقَدْ عَرَضْتُ عَلَيْهِ نَاقَةً عَظِيمَةً لِيَأْخُذَهَا فَأَبَى عَلَيَّ وَهَا هِيَ ذِهِ قَدْ جِئْتُكَ بِهَا يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ خُذْهَا فَقَالَ لَهُ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ ذَلِكَ الَّذِي عَلَيْكَ فَإِنْ تَطَوَّعْتَ بِخَيْرٍ آجَرَكَ اللهُ فِيهِ وَقَبِلْنَاهُ مِنْكَ قَالَ فَهَا هِيَ ذِهِ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ قَدْ جِئْتُكَ بِهَا فَخُذْهَا فَأَمَرَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ بِقَبْضِهَا وَدَعَا لَهُ فِي مَالِهِ بِالْبَرَكَةِ وَرَوَاهُ غَيْرُهُ عَنْ يَعْقُوبَ بْنِ إِبْرَاهِيمَ فَقَالَ فِي الْحَدِيثِ نَاقَةً فِتْيَةً عَظِيمَةً سَمِينَةً
