10. Zakāh (Prescribed Charity)
The upper hand is better than the lower one, the upper being the one which bestows and the lower one which begs. (Using translation from Muslim 1033)
[Machine] I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say that the upper hand is better than the lower hand. The upper hand is the one that gives in charity, while the lower hand is the one that begs for assistance.
[Machine] The Prophet ﷺ said: "The upper hand is better than the lower hand, and the upper hand is the restrained one while the lower hand is the one that begs." And Hafs bin Maysarah narrated it from Musa bin 'Uqbah. It was said about him that the upper hand is the spending hand. And Ali bin Ahmad bin Abdan informed us that Ahmad bin 'Ubaid narrated it from Ibn Mihran, meaning Hassan bin Al-Abbas bin Mihran, who narrated it from Suwaid, meaning Ibn Sa'id, who narrated it from Hafs bin Musa. And he mentioned it.
[Machine] He informed him saying, "I came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ with some people from the Bani Saad ibn Bakr, and I was the youngest among them. They left me with their belongings and came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ to fulfill their needs. Then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ asked, 'Is anyone left among you?' They said, 'O Messenger of Allah, there is a young boy among us whom we left with our belongings.' So, he commanded them to send me to him. They came to me and said, 'Answer the Messenger of Allah ﷺ .' So, I went to him. When he saw me, he said, 'May Allah bless you. Do not ask people for anything, for the upper hand is better than the lower one. And indeed, Allah's wealth is sufficient for everyone.' He spoke to me in our language."
[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "There are three types of hands: the hand of Allah, which is the highest; the hand of the giver, which follows it; and the hand of the beggar, which is lower. So give in charity and do not be unable to provide for yourself." This narration is reported by Ibrahim al-Hajari from Abu al-Ahwas from Abdullah ibn Mas'ud in a raised and stopped chain.
[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "There are three types of hands: the upper hand which belongs to Allah, the giving hand that follows it, and the lower hand of the beggar that will remain until the Day of Resurrection. So seek refuge from asking as much as you can, and whoever is given goodness by Allah, let him show gratitude. Begin with those who depend on you, humble yourself before those more virtuous than you, and do not blame those who have just enough. And do not be incapable of taking care of yourself." This was reported by Ibrahim ibn Tahman from al-Hajari as marfoo' and narrated by Ja'far ibn 'Awn from Ibrahim al-Hajari as mauqoof.
