Tafsir al-Jalalayn

تَفْسِيرُ الجَلَالَيْنِ

Tafsir al-Jalalayn (The Exegesis of the Two Jalals) is a collaborative work begun by Jalal al-Din al-Mahalli (d. 864 AH / 1459 CE) and completed after his death by his student Jalal al-Din al-Suyuti (d. 911 AH / 1505 CE). The objective of the work is to provide a concise and accessible explanation of the surface meaning of the Quran, making Quranic exegesis available to students without the lengthy elaboration characteristic of larger tafsir works. The manhaj is primarily linguistic and analytical, offering brief glosses on words and phrases drawing on classical Arabic grammar and rhetoric, and is broadly categorized as tafsir bi-al-rai within the bounds of Sunni orthodoxy. al-Mahalli completed the second half of the Quran beginning from Surat al-Kahf as well as Surat al-Fatihah, while al-Suyuti completed the remaining first portion. Both authors were Shafii in fiqh, and al-Suyuti in particular maintained an Ashari theological orientation. The work is printed in a single compact volume, making it the among the shortest complete tafsir works in the tradition. It enjoys extraordinary popularity as a foundational pedagogical text in traditional seminaries across South Asia, Southeast Asia, and West Africa, and is typically among the first tafsir works studied in formal Islamic education.
