Strange and questionable narration on the Night of the Jinn

ahmad:3788ʿĀrim > ʿAffān > Muʿtamir > Abī > Abū Tamīmah > ʿAmr, perhaps al-Bikālī > ʿAmr > ʿAbdullāh b. Masʿūd

[AI] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ had me follow him. He said: We set out until I came to such-and-such a place, and he drew a line for me. He said to me: "Stay within this; do not come out of it, for if you come out, you will perish." He said: So I stayed in it. He said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ then went on a short distance, or somewhat farther, or as he said. Then he mentioned some beings, as if they were the Zutt—Affan said, or as Affan said, if Allah wills—with no clothes on them, yet I did not see their private parts; they were tall and had little flesh. He said: They came and began climbing upon the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. He said: The Prophet of Allah ﷺ began reciting to them. He said: They began coming to me, appearing as phantoms—or swaying—around me and crossing in front of me. Abdullah said: I was terrified of them with intense terror. He said: So I sat down, or as he said. He said: When the first column of dawn split forth, they began to depart, or as he said.

He said: Then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ came, heavy and in pain—or almost in pain—because of what they had done in climbing upon him. He said: "I find myself heavy," or as he said. Then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ placed his head in my lap, or as he said. He said: Then some beings came, wearing white garments and tall, or as he said, while the Messenger of Allah ﷺ had dozed off. Abdullah said: I was more terrified of them than I had been the first time. Arim said in his narration: He said: Some of them said to others, "This servant has certainly been given good," or as they said. "His two eyes are asleep"—or he said, "his eye," or as they said—"while his heart is awake."

Then he said: Arim and Affan said: Some of them said to others, "Come, let us strike a parable for him," or as they said. Some of them said to others, "Strike a parable for him and we will interpret it, or we will strike it and you will interpret." Some of them said to others, "His likeness is that of a master who built a fortified structure, then sent food to the people," or as he said. "Whoever did not come to his food"—or he said, "did not follow him"—"he punished with a severe punishment," or as they said. The others said, "As for the master, he is the Lord of all worlds; as for the structure, it is Islam; the food is Paradise; and he is the caller. Whoever follows him will be in Paradise." Arim said in his narration: or as they said. "And whoever does not follow him will be punished," or as he said.

Then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ woke up and said: "What did you see, O Ibn Umm Abd?" Abdullah said: I saw such-and-such. The Prophet ﷺ said: "Nothing of what they said was hidden from me." The Prophet of Allah ﷺ said: "They are a group of the angels," or he said: "They are from the angels," or as Allah willed.

Blessing for preserving and conveying knowledge, and three traits of a sincere Muslim heart

tirmidhi:2658Ibn Abū ʿUmar > Sufyān > ʿAbd al-Malik b. ʿUmayr > ʿAbd al-Raḥman b. ʿAbdullāh b. Masʿūd from his father

from the Prophet ﷺ who said: "May Allah brighten ˹the face of˺ a man who hears a saying of mine, so he internalizes it, remembers it, and conveys it ˹to others˺. Perhaps he carries ˹its˺ understanding to the one who has more understanding than him. There are three ˹qualities˺ that will not cause rancor in the heart of a Muslim toward ˹others˺: (1) sincerity in the deeds for ˹the sake of˺ Allah, (2) giving sincere advice to the leaders / religious authority of the Muslims, and (3) staying involved within their community for their dua guards them from behind them."

bukhari:4488Musaddad > Yaḥyá > Sufyān > ʿAbd Allāh b. Dīnār > Ibn ʿUmar

While the people were performing the dawn prayer in Masjid Qubā’, a man came and said, “Allah has revealed to the Prophet ﷺ Quran commanding him to face the Kabah, so face it.” So they turned toward the Kabah.

The best and worst qualities of women

bayhaqi:13478Abū Ṭāhir al-Faqīh > Abū Bakr Muḥammad b. al-Ḥusayn al-Qaṭṭān > Abū al-Azhar > Abū Ṣāliḥ ʿAbdullāh b. Ṣāliḥ > Mūsá b. ʿAlī b. Rabāḥ > ʿAlī b. Rabāḥ > Abū Udhaynah al-Ṣadafī

that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "The best of your women are the loving, fertile, compliant, and supportive, if they fear Allah ﷻ. The worst of your women are those who make a display ˹of their beauty˺ and behave arrogantly; they are the hypocrites. None of them will enter Paradise except as rare as the white-marked crow."

It has also been narrated with an authentic chain from Sulayman ibn Yasar, from the Prophet ﷺ, as a mursal report up to his saying: "if they fear Allah ﷻ."

Raising the hands and pointing with the finger in prayer

ahmad:18877Hāshim b. al-Qāsim > Shuʿbah > ʿĀṣim b. Kulayb > Abī > Wāʾil al-Ḥaḍramī

He saw the Prophet ﷺ pray: he said the takbir and raised his hands; when he bowed, he raised his hands; and when he raised his head from bowing, he raised his hands. He kept his arms away from his sides in his bowing, and kept them away in his prostration. When he sat to recite the tashahhud, he placed his right thigh upon the left, placed his right hand, pointed with his index finger, and formed a circle with the middle finger.

Flogging the intoxicated repeat offender

The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "If he becomes intoxicated, flog him; then if he becomes intoxicated, flog him; then if he becomes intoxicated, flog him; then if he returns a fourth time, kill him."

Abu Dawud said: Likewise is the hadith of Umar b. Abu Salamah, from his father, from Abu Hurayrah, from the Prophet ﷺ: "If he drinks wine, flog him; then if he returns a fourth time, kill him." Abu Dawud said: Likewise is the hadith of Suhayl, from Abu Salih, from Abu Hurayrah, from the Prophet ﷺ: "If they drink a fourth time, kill them." Likewise is the hadith of Ibn Abi Nu'm, from Ibn Umar, from the Prophet ﷺ; likewise the hadith of Abdullah ibn Amr, from the Prophet ﷺ; and al-Sharid, from the Prophet ﷺ. In the hadith of al-Jadali, from Muawiyah, the Prophet ﷺ said: "Then if he returns on the third or the fourth time, kill him."

How Allah makes one person a means of provision for another

tirmidhi:2345Muḥammad b. Bashshār > Abū Dāwūd al-Ṭayālisī > Ḥammād b. Salamah > Thābit > Anas b. Mālik

There were two brothers during the time of the Prophet ﷺ. One of them used to come to the Prophet ﷺ ˹to learn˺, while the other ˹used to˺ work ˹and earn˺. The one who worked complained about his brother to the Prophet ﷺ, and he said: "Perhaps you are provided for because of him."

Abū ʿĪsá said that this Ḥadīth is Ḥasan-Ṣaḥīḥ.

Fasting on the day of Ashura

ahmad:8717Abū Jaʿfar > ʿAbd al-Ṣamad > his father > Shubayl > Abū Hurayrah

The Prophet ﷺ passed by some Jews who had fasted the day of Ashura, and he said, "What is this fast?" They said, "This is the day on which Allah saved Moses and the Children of Israel from drowning, and on it He drowned Pharaoh. This is also the day on which the ship came to rest upon al-Judi, so Noah and Moses fasted out of gratitude to Allah." Then the Prophet ﷺ said, "I have more right to Moses, and more right to fast this day," so he ordered his companions to fast.

Completing Hajj after reaching Arafah by night or day

I came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ while he was at the standing place (Arafah), and I said, “O Messenger of Allah, I have come from the mountain of Tayy; I have worn out my riding mount and exhausted myself. By Allah, there was no mountain among those mountains except that I stood upon it.” He said: "Whoever catches this prayer with us —that is, the morning prayer— and had come to Arafah before that, by night or day, has completed his Hajj and fulfilled his tafath."

Among the Companions, Abd al-Rahman b. Yamar al-Dawli corroborated Urwah b. al-Mudarris in narrating this Sunnah.

Concessions in telling a lie for reconciliation, war, and between spouses

muslim:2605aḤarmalah b. Yaḥyā > Ibn Wahb > Yūnus > Ibn Shihāb > Ḥumayd b. ʿAbd al-Raḥmān b. ʿAwf > Umm Kulthūm bt. ʿUqbah b. Abī Muʿayṭ

that she heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ saying: "The liar is not the one who reconciles between people: he says good, and conveys good."

Ibn Shihab ˹al-Zuhri˺ said: I have not heard of permission being granted in anything that people call lying except in three cases: war, reconciliation between people, a man’s speech to his wife, and a woman’s speech to her husband.

Reconciling between people is not lying

bukhari:2692ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz b. ʿAbdullāh > Ibrāhīm b. Saʿd > Ṣāliḥ > Ibn Shihāb > Ḥumayd b. ʿAbd al-Raḥmān > Umm Kulthūm bt. ʿUqbah

She heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say: "The liar is not the one who reconciles between people, conveying good or saying good."

The camel speaks to clear the Bedouin of theft accusations

hakim:4236Abū Muḥammad al-Ḥasan b. Ibrāhīm al-Aslamī al-Fārisī from Aṣl Kitābih > Jaʿfar b. Darastawayh > al-Yamān b. Saʿīd al-Miṣṣīṣī > Yaḥyá b. ʿAbdullāh al-Miṣrī > ʿAbd al-Razzāq > Maʿmar > al-Zuhrī > Sālim > ʿAbdullāh b. ʿUmar

[AI] We were sitting around the Messenger of Allah ﷺ when a desert Arab—an eloquent Bedouin from Yemen—entered on a red she-camel. He made it kneel at the door of the mosque, then came in, greeted us, and sat down. When he had finished, they said, “O Messenger of Allah, the she-camel under the Bedouin is stolen.” He said, “Is there proof?” They said, “Yes, O Messenger of Allah.” He said, “O ʿAlī, take Allah’s due from the Bedouin if the proof is established against him; and if it is not established, then return him to me.”

The Bedouin lowered his head for a while. Then the Prophet ﷺ said to him, “Stand, O Bedouin, for Allah’s matter; otherwise present your argument.” Whereupon the she-camel spoke from behind the door: “By Him who sent you with honor, O Messenger of Allah, this man did not steal me, and no one has owned me other than he.” The Prophet ﷺ said to him, “O Bedouin, by Him who made her speak in your defense—what was it that you said?” He replied, “I said: O Allah, You are not a Lord whom we have newly invented, nor is there with You a god who aided You in creating us, nor is there with You any lord such that we would doubt Your lordship. You are our Lord as we say, and above what those who speak can say. I ask You to send blessings upon Muhammad and to clear me by my innocence.”

The Prophet ﷺ said to him, “By Him who sent me with honor, O Bedouin, I have indeed seen the angels racing to the mouths of the alleys, writing down your words—so increase your prayers for blessings upon me.”

The transmitters of this report, from the last of them, are trustworthy; but as for Yahya b. Abdullah al-Misri, I do not know him as either reliable or discredited. He is a lier.
