The Prophet ﷺ came to Medina and saw the Jews fasting on the day of Ashura. He asked them about that. They replied, "This is a good day, the day on which Allah rescued Bani Israel from their enemy. So, Moses fasted this day." The Prophet ﷺ said, "We have more claim over Moses than you." So, the Prophet fasted on that day and ordered (the Muslims) to fast (on that day).

قَدِمَ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ الْمَدِينَةَ فَرَأَى الْيَهُودَ تَصُومُ يَوْمَ عَاشُورَاءَ فَقَالَ مَا هَذَا قَالُوا هَذَا يَوْمٌ صَالِحٌ هَذَا يَوْمٌ نَجَّى اللَّهُ بَنِي إِسْرَائِيلَ مِنْ عَدُوِّهِمْ فَصَامَهُ مُوسَى قَالَ فَأَنَا أَحَقُّ بِمُوسَى مِنْكُمْ فَصَامَهُ وَأَمَرَ بِصِيَامِهِ

When the Prophet ﷺ came to Medina, he found (the Jews) fasting on the day of 'Ashura' (i.e. 10th of Muharram). They used to say: "This is a great day on which Allah saved Moses and drowned the folk of Pharaoh. Moses observed the fast on this day, as a sign of gratitude to Allah." The Prophet ﷺ said, "I am closer to Moses than they." So, he observed the fast (on that day) and ordered the Muslims to fast on it.

أَنَّ النَّبِيَّ ﷺ لَمَّا قَدِمَ الْمَدِينَةَ وَجَدَهُمْ يَصُومُونَ يَوْمًا يَعْنِي عَاشُورَاءَ فَقَالُوا هَذَا يَوْمٌ عَظِيمٌ وَهْوَ يَوْمٌ نَجَّى اللَّهُ فِيهِ مُوسَى وَأَغْرَقَ آلَ فِرْعَوْنَ فَصَامَ مُوسَى شُكْرًا لِلَّهِ فَقَالَ أَنَا أَوْلَى بِمُوسَى مِنْهُمْ فَصَامَهُ وَأَمَرَ بِصِيَامِهِ

that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ came to Madinah and found the Jews fasting on the day of Ashura. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to them, "What is this day that you fast?" They said, "This is a great day on which Allah saved Moses and his people and drowned Pharaoh and his people. Moses fasted it out of gratitude, so we fast it." The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "We have more right and are closer to Moses than you." So the Messenger of Allah ﷺ fasted it and commanded that it be fasted.

أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ قَدِمَ الْمَدِينَةَ، فَوَجَدَ الْيَهُودَ صِيَامًا يَوْمَ عَاشُورَاءَ، فَقَالَ لَهُمْ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ: «مَا هَذَا الْيَوْمُ الَّذِي تَصُومُونَهُ؟» فَقَالُوا: هَذَا يَوْمٌ عَظِيمٌ، أَنْجَى اللَّهُ فِيهِ مُوسَى وَقَوْمَهُ، وَغَرَّقَ فِرْعَوْنَ وَقَوْمَهُ، فَصَامَهُ مُوسَى شُكْرًا، فَنَحْنُ نَصُومُهُ، فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ: «فَنَحْنُ أَحَقُّ وَأَوْلَى بِمُوسَى مِنْكُمْ»، فَصَامَهُ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ وَأَمَرَ بِصِيَامِهِ.

“The Prophet ﷺ came to Al- Madinah, and he found the Jews observing a fast. He said: ‘What is this?’ They said: ‘This is the day when Allah saved Musa and drowned Pharaoh, so Musa fasted this day in gratitude.’ The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: ‘We have more right to Musa than you do.’ So he fasted (that day) and enjoined (others) to fast it also.’”

“The Prophet ﷺ came to Al- Madinah, and he found the Jews observing a fast. قَدِمَ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ فَإِذَا الْيَهُودُ يَصُومُونَ يَوْمَ عَاشُورَاءَ فَقَالَ «مَا بَالُ هَذَا الْيَوْمِ؟» قَالَ «يَوْمٌ أَنْجَى اللهُ فِيهِ مُوسَى وَأَغْرَقَ بَنِي إِسْرَائِيلَ فَنَحْنُ أَحَقُّ بِمُوسَى فَصَامَهُ وَأَمَرَ بِصِيَامِهِ»

[AI] That the Messenger of Allah ﷺ arrived in Medina on the day of Ashura and saw the Jews fasting. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ asked, "What is this?" What is the (significance) of this day that you observe fast on it? They said: It is the day of great (significance) when Allah delivered Moses and his people, and drowned the Pharaoh and his people, and Moses observed fast out of gratitude and we also observe it. Upon this the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: We have more right, and we have a closer connection with Moses than you have; so Messenger of Allah ﷺ observed fast (on the day of 'Ashura), and gave orders that it should be observed.
