[Machine] I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ saying, "It is better for one of you to wake up in the morning and gather firewood on his back, give it in charity, and become self-sufficient rather than asking someone for help. The upper hand is better than the lower hand. Start with those who depend on you."  

البيهقي:٧٨٦٥ – أَخْبَرَنَا أَبُو زَكَرِيَّا بْنُ أَبِي إِسْحَاقَ الْمُزَكِّي ثنا أَبُو عَبْدِ اللهِ مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ يَعْقُوبَ بْنِ يُوسُفَ ثنا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ عَبْدِ الْوَهَّابِ أنبأ يَعْلَى بْنُ عُبَيْدٍ ثنا إِسْمَاعِيلُ عَنْ قَيْسٍ ح وَحَدَّثَنَا أَبُو عَبْدِ اللهِ حَدَّثَنَا إِبْرَاهِيمُ بْنُ مُحَمَّدٍ وَمُحَمَّدُ بْنُ النَّضْرِ وَأَحْمَدُ بْنُ سَلَمَةَ قَالَ مُحَمَّدٌ أنبأ وَقَالَ الْآخَرَانِ حَدَّثَنَا هَنَّادُ بْنُ السَّرِيِّ ثنا أَبُو الْأَحْوَصِ عَنْ بَيَانِ بْنِ بِشْرٍ عَنْ قَيْسِ بْنِ أَبِي حَازِمٍ عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ قَالَ

سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ يَقُولُ لَأَنْ يَغْدُوَ أَحَدُكُمْ فَيَحْتَطِبَ عَلَى ظَهْرِهِ فَيَتَصَدَّقَ بِهِ وَيَسْتَغْنِيَ بِهِ عَنِ النَّاسِ خَيْرٌ مِنْ أَنْ يَسْأَلَ رَجُلًا أَعْطَاهُ أَوْ مَنَعَهُ ذَلِكَ بِأَنَّ الْيَدَ الْعُلْيَا أَفْضَلُ مِنَ الْيَدِ السُّفْلَى وَابْدَأْ بِمَنْ تَعُولُ

It is better for one among you to bring a load of firewood on his back and give charity out of it (and satisfy his own need) and be independent of people, than that he should beg from people, whether they give him anything or refuse him. Verily the upper hand is better than the lower hand, and begin (charity) with your dependents.  

مسلم:١٠٤٢a – حَدَّثَنِي هَنَّادُ بْنُ السَّرِيِّ حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو الأَحْوَصِ عَنْ بَيَانٍ أَبِي بِشْرٍ عَنْ قَيْسِ بْنِ أَبِي حَازِمٍ عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ قَالَ
