Clapping is for women.' Then he said: 'If you notice something when you are praying, say "SubhanAllah.'" (Using translation from Nasāʾī 1183)

Messenger of Allah ﷺ stood up (to pray) and we heard him say:" I seek refuge in Allah from thee." Then said:" curse thee with Allah's curse" three times, then he stretched out his hand as though he was taking hold of something. When he finished the prayer, we said: Messenger of Allah, we heard you say something during the prayer which we have not heard you say before, and we saw you stretch out your hand. He replied: Allah's enemy Iblis came with a flame of fire to put it in my face, so I said three times:" I Seek refuge in Allah from thee." Then I said three times:" I curse thee with Allah's full curse." But he did not retreat (on any one of these) three occasions. Thereafter I meant to seize him. I swear by Allah that had it not been for the supplication of my brother Sulaiman he would have been bound, and made an object of sport for the children of Medina. [Machine] While I was with the Messenger of Allah in prayer, a man from the people sneezed. So, I said to him, "May Allah have mercy on you." The people stared at me with their eyes, so I said, "Woe to you all, why are you looking at me?" They started hitting their thighs with their hands to silence me, but I remained silent. When the Messenger of Allah finished praying, he called me and said, "Who is your father and mother? He did not hit me, nor did he scratch me, nor did he curse me. I have never seen a teacher before him or after him who provided better teaching than him." He said, "Verily, in our prayer, there should be no place for the talk of people. It is only for praising Allah, saying takbeer, and reciting the Quran." Then, I noticed some spoils of war, so I remembered the hadith briefly.

We used to speak while in prayer. One of us used to speak to his brother (while in prayer) about his need, till the Verse was revealed:-- "Guard strictly the (five obligatory) prayers, especially the middle (the Best) (ʿAsr) Prayer and stand before Allah with obedience (and not to speak to others during the prayers)." Then we were ordered not to speak in the prayers. (Using translation from Bukhārī 4534)
