23. Book of Quranic Exegesis (Tafsīr) (16/23)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
We have begun in this book with the descent of the Quran, in what has been narrated in the Musnad concerning the recitations, and the mention of the companions who compiled and memorized the Quran, before the interpretation of the Surahs.
[Machine] "Prophet Dawud ﷺ suddenly passed away on a Saturday while he used to observe fasting. The birds would gather and shade him." This is according to the narration of Al-Bukhari and Muslim.
[Machine] He is the devil who used to rule from his throne for forty days, and Solomon had a servant called "Jaradah." There was a dispute between some of her people and his people, so he judged between them with justice, except that he wished for the truth to be in favor of her people. Allah then revealed to him that he would be afflicted with a test. He did not know whether it would come to him from the sky or from the earth.
[Machine] I heard the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, saying, "Indeed, Solomon, son of David, peace be upon both of them, asked Allah for three things and He gave him two, and I hope that He gave him the third. He asked for judgment that aligned with Allah's judgment and He granted it to him. He asked for a kingdom that no one would have after him, and He granted it to him. And he asked for anyone who leaves his house, desiring nothing but to pray in this mosque, meaning the Masjid al-Aqsa, to be forgiven of his sins as if he was born on the same day." The Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, said, "And we hope that Allah has granted him that." Abdullah is the son of Firuz, a trustworthy person.
23.39 [Machine] Translation: Interpretation of Surah Az-Zumar
[Machine] I heard Aisha say that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to fast until we would say he would not break his fast, and he would break his fast until we would say he would not fast. And he would recite Surah Banu Israel and Surah Az-Zumar every night. Adh-Dhahabi did not mention this in his summary.
When this surah was revealed to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ: ʿVerily, you (O Muhammad is) will die, and verily, they (too) will die. Then, on the Day of Resurrection, you will be disputing before your Lord” (az-Zumar [39:30,31]), az-Zubair said: “O Messenger of Allah, will we face again the disputes we had among us in this world in addition to other sins?” He said: “Yes, you will face these disputes again until everyone who has a right has been given his right.” AzZubair said: “By Allah, the matter is very serious.” (Using translation from Aḥmad 1434)
[Machine] "When this verse was revealed, he mentioned the hadith but did not mention Zubayr in its chain of narration, as it is authentic according to the condition of Muslim and he did not exclude it."
[Machine] "We used to say that there is no repentance for the one who is in temptation, and that Allah will not accept anything from him. But when the Messenger of Allah ﷺ arrived in Madinah, the following verse was revealed about them: 'O My servants who have transgressed against themselves [by sinning], do not despair of the mercy of Allah. Indeed, Allah forgives all sins.Indeed, it is He who is the Forgiving, the Merciful.' (Quran 39:53). Omar then said, 'I wrote these verses and sat on my camel. Then I circled around Madinah, and later on the Messenger of Allah ﷺ established himself in Makkah, waiting for the permission of Allah to migrate, along with his companions who were among the emigrants. Abu Bakr also waited for the permission to be granted to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ so that he could leave with him.'"
[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Every inhabitant of the Fire will see his place in Paradise and will say, 'If only Allah had guided me, I would have been among the people of Paradise.' And every inhabitant of Paradise will see his place in the Fire and will say, 'If only Allah had not guided me, I would have been among the people of the Fire.' Then, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ recited, '{That will be the time when the self will say, "Oh, how I regret my failure to side with God!"}' (Surah az-Zumar, 39:56)"
قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ كُلُّ أَهْلِ النَّارِ يَرَى مَقْعَدَهُ مِنَ الْجَنَّةِ فَيَقُولُ لَوْ أَنَّ اللَّهَ هَدَانِي فَتَكُونُ عَلَيْهِ حَسْرَةٌ وَكُلُّ أَهْلِ الْجَنَّةِ يَرَى مَقْعَدَهُ مِنَ النَّارِ فَيَقُولُ لَوْلَا أَنَّ اللَّهَ هَدَانِي فَيَكُونُ لَهُ شُكْرٌ ثُمَّ تَلَا رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ {أَنْ تَقُولَ نَفْسٌ يَا حَسْرَتَا عَلَى مَا فَرَّطْتُ فِي جَنْبِ اللَّهِ}
[Machine] Abu Al-Muwajjah praised it and Abdullah narrated to Anbasah ibn Sa'id, who narrated from Habib ibn Abi 'Amrah, who narrated from Mujahid, who said that Ibn Abbas told him, "Do you know the vastness of Hellfire?" I said, "No." He said, "By Allah, you do not know that the distance between the lobe of the ear and the shoulder of one of them is a journey of seventy autumns through valleys of pus and blood?" I said, "Are those rivers?" He said, "No, rather valleys." Then he said, "Do you know the vastness of Hellfire?" I said, "No." He said, "By Allah, you do not know. Aisha informed me that she asked the Messenger of Allah ﷺ about the saying of Allah, the Exalted and Majestic, 'And the earth altogether will be His handful on the Day of Resurrection, and the heavens will be folded in His right hand.' I said, 'Where will the people be on that day, O Messenger of Allah?' He said, 'On the bridge of Hellfire.'"
[Machine] Regarding the Prophet ﷺ and his statement in which Allah Almighty said: "And the Horn will be blown." (Surah Az-Zumar 39:68), the Prophet ﷺ said, "It is a horn that will be blown."
[Machine] "She (Aisha) used to say to the wives of the Prophet ﷺ, 'What prevents a woman from giving herself to you?' So Allah revealed this verse regarding the wives of the Prophet ﷺ, 'You can defer whom you will of them, and you may accept whom you will' [Quran 33:51]. Aisha said to the Prophet ﷺ, 'I see that your Lord hurries to fulfill your desires.'"
[Machine] The translation of «مَا تُوُفِّيَ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ حَتَّى أَحَلَّ اللَّهُ لَهُ أَنْ يَتَزَوَّجَ» into English is: "The Prophet ﷺ did not pass away until Allah permitted him to marry."
23.40 [Machine] Interpretation of Surah Ha-Meem Al-Mu'min.
[Machine] "He passed by Abu Darda while he was building a mosque, so he asked, 'What is this?' Abu Darda replied, 'This is for the family of Hameem.'" Al-Dhahabi remained silent about it in the summary.
In His statement, Glory be to Him, "Our Lord, You caused us to die twice and You gave us life twice" [Surah Al-Ghafir: 11], He said, "It is similar to that which is in Surah Al-Baqarah, 'You were lifeless, then We gave you life; then We caused you to die; then We revived you' [Surah Al-Baqarah: 28]."
[Machine] A caller calls out, "O people, has the Hour come to you? The living will hear it and the dead as well. And Allah will descend to the lowest heaven and call out, 'Whose is the sovereignty today?' It belongs to Allah, the One, the Subduer."
[Machine] From a man among the Prophet's companions ﷺ , who heard it from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ about retribution, and I didn't hear it. So, I sought a camel and prepared my gear on it, then I traveled for a month until I reached Egypt. I came to Abdullah bin Unais and said to the gatekeeper, "Tell him Jabir is at the gate." He said, "The son of Abdullah?" I said, "Yes." So, he went to him and informed him. He then started to tread on his garment until he came out to me, and I embraced him and he embraced me. I said to him, "There is a hadith that I have heard from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ about retribution, but I didn't hear it." I feared that I would die or she would die before I heard it. Abdullah said, "I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ saying, 'Allah will resurrect the people naked, barefoot and uncircumcised.' We asked, 'O Messenger of Allah, what does uncircumcised mean?' He replied, 'They will have nothing with them.' Then Allah will call them with a voice that will be heard by those far and near, 'I am the Sovereign, I am the Judge. It is not befitting for anyone from the people of Paradise to enter Paradise, nor for anyone from the people of Hell to enter Hell, and he has something due to him from Me, even to the extent of the strike of a falling leaf.' We asked, 'How is that possible when we come to Allah in a state of destitution and poverty?' He said, 'Through the good and bad deeds.' Then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ recited the verse, 'Today, every soul will be recompensed for what it earned. No injustice today!'" [Surah Ghafir: 17]

[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "If a bullet from the sky was sent to the earth, traveling for five hundred years, it would reach the earth before the night. And the Messenger of Allah ﷺ recited the verse {When the iron collars will be around their necks and the chains, they will be dragged In boiling water} [Surah Ghafir 72]."

23.41 [Machine] Explanation of Surah Ham Al-Sajdah
[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ recited an Arabic Quran for a people who understood [Arabic]. Then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Ismail has been inspired with this language."
[Machine] From his father, with a clear Arabic language, he said, "Speak to them in the language of their tribe." (Al-Shu'ara 195)
[Machine] The Prophet ﷺ heard a man recite with a melodious voice, so the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Guide your brother." It is a sahih (authentic) chain of narration, but it was not recorded in a sahih hadeeth collection.
[Machine] The Messenger of Allah (pbuh) said, "Learn the Arabic language properly and seek the eloquence of the Quran."
[Machine] On the authority of the Prophet, peace be upon him, he said, "On the Day of Judgment, they will come with their lips sealed, and the first thing the person will speak is his foot and his palm."
[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "You will be gathered here, and he pointed with his hand towards Sham (Greater Syria), walking and riding, with your faces exposed and your deeds presented before Allah. And verily, the first one among you to be called upon will be taken by his forelock." Then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ recited the verse, "{And you were not hiding yourselves that your ears and your eyes and your skins will testify against you}" [Fussilat 41:22]. (Narrated by Abu Qaz'a Swaid bin Hujayr, a trustworthy person)
[Machine] From the saying of Allah, the Exalted: "Our Lord, show us those who misled us among the jinn and mankind." [Surah Fussilat 41:29] He ﷺ said, "It is the son of Adam who killed his brother and Iblis."
[Machine] What do you say about the saying of Allah Almighty: "Indeed, those who say, 'Our Lord is Allah,' and then remain on a right course - the angels will descend upon them, saying, 'Do not fear and do not grieve but receive good tidings of Paradise, which you were promised.'" [Fussilat 30] And His saying: "Those who believed and did not mix their belief with injustice - those will have security, and they are [rightly] guided." [Al-An'am 82] Is their belief in injustice a sin? So those who say, 'Our Lord is Allah,' and then remain on a right course without wavering, and those who did not mix their belief with injustice by committing a sin, Abu Bakr said, "You have carried it (this statement) on a different side (other than intended) and then remained on a right course without wavering, and without turning towards any other deity, and without mixing their belief with injustice, meaning with polytheism."
[Machine] Two men approached the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ , and one of them became very angry. The Prophet ﷺ said, "I know a word that, if he says it, his anger will go away. I seek refuge in Allah from the accursed Satan." The man said, "Do you think I am crazy?" Then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ recited the verse, "And if an evil suggestion comes to you from Satan, then seek refuge in Allah. Indeed, He is the Hearing, the Knowing." [Surah Fussilat, verse 36].
[Machine] He used to prostrate at the end of the two verses of Surah As-Sajdah, and Abu Abdur-Rahman, meaning Ibn Mas'ud, used to prostrate at the first of the two verses.
[Machine] "Indeed, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ recited: 'Indeed, those who disbelieve in the message [i.e., the Quran] when it came to them. And indeed, it is a noble Book. Falsehood cannot approach it from before it or from behind it; [it is] a revelation from a [Lord who is] Wise and Praiseworthy' [Surah Fussilat, 42]. So the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, 'Indeed, you will not return to Allah with anything more beloved to Him than something that came out of Him,' meaning the Quran."
[Machine] "O you who is in a state of well-being, draw near to Allah with whatever means you are capable of, for indeed, you will not draw near to Him with anything more beloved to Him than His speech."

[Machine] His saying, Almighty and Exalted is He, "The heavens almost break apart from above them," He said, "from the weight."
[Machine] "Between Adam and Noah were ten centuries, all of them on the same divine law. But when they differed, Allah sent prophets and messengers and revealed His book, so they became one nation."
[Machine] "People, after Adam, fell into polytheism, they took these idols and worshipped other than Allah. So the angels made supplication against them and said, 'Our Lord, You created Your servants and You perfected their creation and You provided for them and You provided them with good provisions. They disobeyed You and worshipped other than You, O Allah. O Allah, they make supplication against them.' So the Lord, the Exalted and Majestic, said to them, 'Indeed, they are in error, so they shall not be excused.' He said, 'Choose two from among you who will descend to the earth and I will order them and they will be forbidden. So they chose Harut and Marut. He said, and the narration mentions their trial and it says, 'So when they drank alcohol and became intoxicated and they fell into unlawful sexual intercourse and they killed a soul, the commotion increased between them and the angels. So they looked at what they were doing and in response to that, (the verse) was revealed, 'And the angels exalt ( Allah) with praise of their Lord and ask forgiveness for those on earth' (Surah Ash-Shura, 42:5). He said, 'So afterward the angels made excuses for the people of the earth and supplicated for them.'

[Machine] "He stood in Arafat and looked at the sun as it was dropping like a shield at sunset. He cried and his weeping intensified. He recited the verse of Allah, the Almighty, from 'Allah is the One who revealed the Book with truth and the Balance. And what will make you perceive that perhaps the Hour is close' (Surah Ash-Shura, 42:17) to 'the Mighty, the Exalted' (Surah Hud, 11:66). His servant said to him, 'O Abu Abdullah, I have stood with you many times, but I have never seen you do this.' He replied, 'I remembered the Messenger of Allah ﷺ standing at this exact place and he said: 'O people, nothing from your worldly matters remains in this world except what remains from this day of yours.'"

[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ recited: "Whoever desires the harvest of the Hereafter - We increase for him in his harvest. And whoever desires the harvest of this world - We give him thereof, but there is not for him in the Hereafter any share." [Surah Ash-Shura, verse 20]. Then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: Allah Almighty says, "O son of Adam, devote yourself to my worship, I will fill your heart with contentment and remove your poverty. But if not, I will fill your heart with distraction and not remove your poverty."

[Machine] Concerning that, Ibn Abbas wrote that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "The most noble among the Quraysh is the one who has the most offspring in his lineage," Allah, the Almighty and Majestic, then said in the Quran, "Say, 'I ask of you for it no payment' (Al-An'am 90) regarding what I am calling you to except that you should love and support my relatives." Hushaim narrated to me and Husein informed me from Ikrimah who narrated it in a similar manner.

[Machine] Qatadah praised and recited the words of Allah, the Almighty: "And if Allah had extended [excessively] provision for His servants, they would have committed tyranny throughout the earth. But He sends [it] down in an amount which He wills." [Surah Ash-Shura, 27]. Khalid ibn Abdallah Al-Asari reported from Abu Ad-Darda' who narrated from the Prophet ﷺ that no sun rises except with two angels being sent on either side. They make sure that what they announce can be heard by all the inhabitants of the earth, except the two heavy creatures. O people, come to your Lord, for what He has said and provided in restricted amounts is better than abundance that distracts and misleads. Also, no sun sets except that two angels are sent on either side, calling: "O Allah, bestow quick provision to one who spends generously, and hasten the perishing of one who hoards excessively."

[Machine] No one in Kufa woke up except for the one who is comfortable. Indeed, the lowest among them drinks from the water of the Euphrates and sits in the shade and eats from the land. This verse was revealed specifically about the companions of the Prophet ﷺ , "And if Allah had extended [excessively] provision for His servants, they would have committed tyranny throughout the earth. But He sends [it] down in an amount which He wills." [Surah Ash-Shura, 27]. And that is because they said, "If only we had what they have, we would desire the worldly life."

The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: ʿWhoever commits a sin in this world and is punished therein. Allah is too generous to repeat His punishment of His slave [in the Hereafter], whoever commits a sin in this world and Allah conceals it and pardons him, Allah is too generous to retract His pardon when He has granted it.ʿ (Using translation from Aḥmad 775)

[Machine] Some of his companions entered upon him, and he had been afflicted in his body. So, some of them said to him, "We feel sorry for what has befallen you." He said to them, "Do not feel sorry for what you see, for it has befallen me due to a sin, and Allah forgives much." Then he recited the verse from Surah Ash-Shura (Chapter 42) from the verse "And whatever strikes you of disaster - it is for what your hands have earned, but He pardons much" until the end of the verse.

[Machine] We used to display the Qur'an at Alqama's place, and he recited this verse, "Indeed, in that are signs for those who are certain". Abdullah said, "Certainty is the whole of faith". And he recited this verse, "Indeed, in that are signs for every patient and grateful person". Then Abdullah said, "Patience is half of faith". [Ibrahim 5]

"On the Day of Uhud, sixty-four of the Ansar were killed, and six from the Muhajirin, one of whom was Hamzah, and they mutilated them, so the Ansar said: 'If, (in the future) we are able to kill them on a day like this, we would mutilate from among them as twice as they (mutilate from among us).'" He said: "So on the day of the Conquest of Makkah, Allah revealed: And if you punish them, then punish them with the like of that with which you were afflicted. But if you have patience, then it is better for those who are patient (16:126). So a man said: 'There shall be no Quraish after today.' But the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: 'Leave the people, except for four.'" (Using translation from Tirmidhī 3129)

[Machine] "On the authority of Abdullah, he said, 'They divide the mercy of your Lord.' (Surah Az-Zukhruf, 43:32) Abdullah then said, 'I heard the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, saying, "Indeed, Allah has divided your behaviors amongst you just as He has divided your provisions. Indeed, Allah gives the worldly goods to those whom He loves and those whom He does not love, but does not give the religion except to those whom He loves. So, whoever is given the religion by Allah has indeed been loved by Him."'"
