23. Book of Quranic Exegesis (Tafsīr)
l heard 'Umar bin al-Khattab say: When the Revelation came down to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, a sound could be heard near his face like the buzzing of bees. We waited a while, then he turned to face the qiblah and raised his hands, then he said: “O Allah, give us more (blessing) and do not give us less; honour us and do not humiliate us, give to us and do not deprive us, give precedence to us and do not give others precedence over us; be pleased with us and make us pleased.” Then he said: “Ten verses have been revealed to me; whoever adheres to thern will enter Paradise.” Then he recited to us: “Successful indeed are the believers” [al-Mu'minoon 23:1] until he completed the ten verses. (Using translation from Aḥmad 223)
[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Allah created the Garden of Eden and planted its trees with His own hand. Then He said to it, 'Speak.' So it said, 'Indeed, the believers have succeeded.'"
[Machine] We asked Aisha, the mother of the believers, "What was the character of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ?" She said, "His character was the Quran." Then she said, "Do you recite Surah Al-Mu'minun?" recite, "Certainly will the believers have succeeded." [Quran 23:1] until it reached ten. Then she said, "This is how the character of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ was."
[Machine] Regarding His saying, Exalted be He, "Who are humble in their prayers" [Surah Al-Mu'minun, verse 2], He said: "Humility is in the heart, and that your shoulders soften for the Muslim, and that you do not turn around in your prayer."
[Machine] The translation is as follows: "Indeed, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to raise his gaze towards the sky when he prayed, and then the verse would descend upon him: 'Those who are humble in their prayers' [Al-Mu'minun 2]. And he would lower his head."
[Machine] And I have recited this verse: "And those who guard their private parts, except from their wives or those their right hands possess, for indeed, they are not to be blamed - But whoever seeks beyond that" [An-Nur 6]. Those whom Allah has not married nor given authority have certainly transgressed.
[Machine] Ishaaq recited that 'Abdul-Razzaq narrated from Ma'mar, who narrated from Al-A'mash, who narrated from Abu Salih, who narrated from Abu Hurairah regarding the saying of Allah, "These [believers] are the inheritors." (Surah Al-Mu'minun, 23:10) He said, "They inherit their dwellings and the dwellings of their brothers that have been prepared for them if they obey Allah."
[Machine] I said, "O Messenger of Allah, is the person who commits adultery, steals, and drinks alcohol, but still fears Allah Almighty, considered righteous?" He said, "No, but the person who fasts, prays, and gives charity, and still fears Allah Almighty, is considered righteous."
[Machine] The black person disliked this verse when it was revealed: "The arrogant ones are making a move to abandon it." They said arrogantly, "We are its people, leaving it behind." He said: "They used to abandon it and not rebuild it." (Al-Mu'minun 67)
[Machine] Abu Sufyan came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and said, "O Muhammad, I swear by Allah and the kinship, we have eaten the 'Alhaz' which means wild animals and blood." So Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, revealed: "And indeed, We seized them with punishment, but they did not yield to their Lord, nor did they humbly supplicate" (Surah Al-Mu'minun, 76).
[Machine] I hear Allah say in the Quran, "And Allah is over all things competent." (Surah Al-Ahzab, 33:27) This was a matter that has already happened, and He said, "On that Day, no close friends will avail each other, and no one will ask after another." (Surah Al-Mu'minun, 23:101) And He also said in another verse, "And they will approach one another, inquiring." (Surah As-Saffat, 37:27) Then He mentioned some things, and Ibn Abbas said, "As for His saying, 'And Allah is over all things competent' (Surah Al-Ahzab, 33:27), surely He has always been, and will always be, the First and the Last, the Manifest and the Hidden. As for His saying, 'On that day, no close friends will avail each other, and no one will ask after another' (Surah Al-Mu'minun, 23:101), this is referring to the first blowing of the Trumpet when nothing will remain on the earth. As for His saying, 'And they will approach one another, inquiring' (Surah As-Saffat, 37:50), surely when they enter Paradise, they will approach one another, inquiring."
"And therein they will grimace in displace lips. -He will be grilled by the Fire until his upper lip is folded up reaching the middle of his head, And his bottom lip pains down, until it hits his navel." (Using translation from Tirmidhī 2587)
[Machine] Verily, the people of the fire will call to Malik, but he will not answer them for forty days, then he will turn toward them and say, "Indeed, you are staying [here permanently]." They will say, "Our Lord, you have overcome us, and we have become a people astray." [Surah Al-Mu'minun 23:106] He will say, "Remain despised therein and do not speak to Me."
إِنَّ أَهْلَ النَّارِ يَدْعُونَ مَالِكًا فَلَا يُجِيبُهُمْ أَرْبَعِينَ يَوْمًا ثُمَّ يَرُدُّ عَلَيْهِمْ إِنَّكُمْ مَاكِثُونَ قَالَ هَانَتْ دَعْوَتُهُمْ وَاللَّهِ عَلَى مَالِكٍ وَرَبِّ مَالِكٍ قَالُوا {رَبَّنَا غَلَبَتْ عَلَيْنَا شِقْوَتُنَا وَكُنَّا قَوْمًا ضَالِّينَ} [المؤمنون 106] {قَالَ اخْسَئُوا فِيهَا وَلَا تُكَلِّمُونَ}
