23. Book of Quranic Exegesis (Tafsīr)
[Machine] The Surah al-Fath was revealed between Mecca and Medina regarding the incident of Hudaybiyah, from the beginning to the end.
[Machine] I heard Mujamma' bin Jariyah saying, "We accompanied the Messenger of Allah ﷺ from Al-Hudaybiyah until he reached Kuraa' Al-Ghamim. When people were marching towards the Messenger of Allah ﷺ , some of them said to others, 'What is happening with the people?' They said, 'It was revealed to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ .' Then, some people said, 'Let us move until we find the Messenger of Allah ﷺ standing at Kuraa' Al-Ghamim.' When people gathered around him, he recited to them, 'Indeed, We have granted you a clear conquest.' [Quran 48:1] Some people said, 'Is it a conquest?' He said, 'By the One in Whose Hand is my soul, it is indeed a conquest.'"
[Machine] Opening of Khaybar, so that Allah may forgive you for what preceded of your sin and what follows. (Surah Al-Fath, 48:2) So they said, "O Messenger of Allah, congratulations to you! But what is for us?" So Allah revealed, "So that He may admit the believing men and believing women to gardens beneath which rivers flow." (Surah Al-Fath, 48:5)
[Machine] When we returned from Hudaybiyah, the companions of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ were filled with sadness and sorrow as they had sacrificed their animals in their locations. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "A verse has been revealed to me that is dearer to me than the entire world." We asked him, "What is it, O Messenger of Allah?" He recited, "Verily, We have given you a clear victory. That Allah may forgive you your sins of the past and the future, and complete His favor on you, and guide you on the Straight Path." (Quran 48:1-2) We said to him, "Congratulations to you, O Messenger of Allah! But what about us?" He recited, "That He may admit the believing men and believing women to Gardens beneath which rivers flow, wherein they abide eternally, and remove from them their misdeeds, and that is, in the sight of Allah, the great success." (Quran 48:5) So, when we reached Khaybar, we saw the fortifications of the enemy, and the soldiers of the Prophet ﷺ turned back in fear. Then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Khaybar is destroyed. When we descend upon a people's land, then wretched is the morning of those who have been warned." The narration of Al-Hakam ibn Malik is considered weak because it is only transmitted through martyrdom.
[Machine] About Ali, who is the one who sent down tranquility in the hearts of the believers. [Al-Fath 4] He said, "Tranquility has a face like the face of a human, then it is a gentle breeze."
[Machine] I asked Ibn Abbas, "What does Allah Almighty mean by 'and offer him aid' [Surah Al-Fath, verse 9]?" He replied, "It refers to striking with the sword in front of the Prophet ﷺ."
[Machine] We were with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ in Hudaybiyah, near the roots of the tree that Allah Almighty mentioned in the Quran. There was a branch from that tree on the back of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ , so I lifted it off his back. Ali ibn Abi Talib and Suhail ibn Amr were sitting in front of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ . The Messenger of Allah ﷺ then said to Ali, "Write." So he mentioned a few lines from the conversation with Suhail ibn Amr. Abdullah ibn Mugaffal said, "While we were like this, thirty young men came out towards us carrying weapons and anger appeared on their faces. The Prophet ﷺ supplicated against them, and Allah took away their eyesight. We took hold of them and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ asked them, 'Did you come under the protection of anyone or did anyone give you security?' They said, 'O Allah's Messenger, No!' So he let them go and Allah revealed the verse, 'And it is He who withheld their hands from you and your hands from them within the area of Mecca, after He caused you to overcome them. And Allah sees what you do.' (Surah Al-Fath, 48:24)"
[Machine] About Ali in his statement "And He made obligatory upon them the word of taqwa" (Surah Al-Fath, 26), he said, "There is no god but Allah and Allah is the Greatest."
[Machine] "A man read Surah Al-Fath to Abdullah. When he reached the verse, 'Like the example of a seed which grows and produces its shoot, then it strengthens it so it becomes thick and stands upon its own stem,' [Quran 48:29] the man said, 'This is to provoke Allah against the disbelievers with the Prophet ﷺ and his companions.' Abdullah then said, 'You are the seed, and its harvest is near.' This is a authentic hadith according to the conditions of Al-Bukhari and Muslim, but they did not include it in their collection."
[Machine] About Aisha, Allah says in [Surah Al-Fath 29]: "so that He might infuriate the disbelievers with them." The companions of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "We were commanded to seek forgiveness for them, but they cursed them."
