23. Book of Quranic Exegesis (Tafsīr)
[Machine] I was in a gathering where Hudhayfah ibn al-Yaman was present. So, I said, "Indeed, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ was taken on a night journey, and he entered the Al-Aqsa Mosque." Hudhayfah responded, "How do you know that, O bald one? I recognize your face, but I do not know your name. What is your name?" So, I said to him, "I am Zirr ibn Hubaysh al-Asadi." He then asked, "How do you know that he entered the mosque?" I replied, "By the Quran." Hudhayfah said, "Whoever holds firmly to the Quran shall have success." I then recited the verse, "Exalted is He who took His Servant by night from al-Masjid al-Haram to al-Masjid al-Aqsa, whose surroundings We have blessed." [Quran, 17:1] Hudhayfah asked, "Do you see him entering it?" I said, "Yes." He said, "By Allah, he did not enter it. If he had entered, it would have been prescribed for you to pray there." Then he added, "He did not leave the back of al-Buraq until he saw Paradise and Hellfire, and he was given the promise of the Hereafter." I said, "O Abu Abdullah, what is al-Buraq?" He replied, "It is an animal larger than a donkey, and smaller than a mule, with its step covering the range of its vision."
from his father that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "When we reached Bait Al-Maqdis, Jibra'il pointed with his finger causing a crack in the rock, and he tied Al-Buraq to it." (Using translation from Tirmidhī 3132)
[Machine] Noah, when he would eat food or wear a garment, would praise Allah and be named a grateful servant.
[Machine] "Is there anyone trustworthy among the people?" I said, "If there were, would you have done what you have done?" He said, "If there were any of them among them, I would have taken him by the head and recited to him such and such verse, 'And We decreed for the Children of Israel in the Scripture that, 'You would do mischief on the earth twice and you will become tyrants and extremely arrogant!'" (Quran 17:4), according to the criteria of Bukhari and Muslim.
[Machine] "O Messenger of Allah, I am a person with abundant wealth, family, and children. So how should I behave or spend it?" He (the Prophet) said, "Pay the obligatory Zakat as purification for yourself and give good treatment to your relatives. Also, recognize the rights of the beggars, neighbors, the destitute, and the traveler." He asked, "O Messenger of Allah, advice me to the minimum." The Prophet said, "Give the rightful share to your close relatives, the destitute, and those stranded on the road, and do not waste excessively." He asked, "O Messenger of Allah, if I pay the Zakat to the Messenger of the Messenger of Allah, have I paid it to Allah and His Messenger?" He said, "Yes, if you have paid it to His Messenger, then you have indeed paid it, and you will receive its reward, while the sin will be upon the one who substitutes it."
[Machine] Abu Al-'Ubaidain came to Abdullah and he was a blind man. So Abdullah was introduced to him and he said, "O Abu Abdur-Rahman, who do we ask if we do not ask you?". Abdullah replied, "What is your need?". He said, "What is righteousness?". Abdullah said, "It is to be kind and accommodating to people". He said, "And what is kindness?". Abdullah said, "To help people in their needs". He said, "And what is wastefulness?". Abdullah said, "To spend money in unnecessary things". He said, "And what is the ummah?". Abdullah said, "It is the one who teaches people good things".
[Machine] When {May the hands of Abu Lahab be ruined} [Al-Masad 1] was revealed, Al-Awarah, the mother of Jameel, the daughter of Harb, came forward. She had ornaments in her hand and she was saying in a disapproving manner, "We have denied our father and his religion, and we have disobeyed his command." The Prophet ﷺ was sitting in the mosque with Abu Bakr, and when Abu Bakr saw her, he said, "O Messenger of Allah, she has come, and I fear that she might see you." So the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "She will not see me." And he recited some verses from the Quran and sought refuge in Allah through them, as He said, "And when you recite the Quran, We put between you and those who do not believe in the Hereafter a concealed partition." [Al-Isra' 45] So she stood in front of Abu Bakr and did not see the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. She said, "O Abu Bakr, I have been informed that your companion has bewitched me." He replied, "No, by the Lord of this house, he has not bewitched you." So she turned away saying, "Quraysh has known that I am the daughter of its chief."
[Machine] According to the saying of Allah Almighty, "Or [any] creation of that which is great within your breasts." (Holy Quran, Al-Isra 17:51). What does he mean by that? He said, "Death."
[Machine] There was a group of humans who were worshipping a group of jinn. Then the group of jinn accepted Islam and the humans continued to cling to their worship. So Allah, the Almighty, revealed, "Say, 'Call upon those whom you claim [as deities] besides Him; they have no power to remove affliction from you or to change it.' Those [whom they invoke] seek means of access to their Lord, [striving as to] which of them would be nearest, and they hope for His mercy and fear His punishment." [Surah Al-Isra' 57] "Both groups with the letter 'ya'."
[Machine] The people of Mecca asked the Messenger of Allah ﷺ to make Safa golden for them and for the mountains to be moved away from them so that they could cultivate in it. Allah, the Exalted, said: "If you wish, We could grant them what they requested. However, if they disbelieve, they will be destroyed like those before them. And if you wish, I can give you authority over them so that perhaps you may be able to humble them." Allah then revealed this verse: "And nothing has prevented Us from sending signs except that the former peoples denied them. And We gave Thamud the she-camel as a visible sign." [Quran 17:59]
[Machine] "It is the vision of an eye that I saw on the night of my ascension."
[Machine] Abdullah used to pray the Maghrib prayer while we saw that the sun was still high. So, one day we looked at it, and he asked, "What are you looking at?" We said, "We are looking at the sun." Abdullah said, "By the One besides whom there is no deity, this is the time for this prayer." Then he recited the verse, "Establish prayer at the decline of the sun until the darkness of the night." So, this is the decline of the sun.
[Machine] The Prophet ﷺ said, "People will be resurrected on the Day of Judgment, and I will be with my ummah on a hill. My Lord will dress me in a green garment, and then permission will be granted to me to speak. I will say what Allah wills for me to say, and that will be the praised position."
[Machine] "That your Lord may raise you to a praised position." [Quran 17:79] He said, "The people will be gathered in one plain where the caller will make them hear and the sight will reach them barefooted, unclothed, as they were created, silently, not speaking except with His permission. Then Muhammad will be called and he will say, 'Here I am, at your service, and your happiness and righteousness are in your hands. Evil is not yours. The guided ones are those whom You have guided and Your servant is in Your presence, and to You is his return, and there is no refuge or escape from You except to You. Blessed and exalted are You, O Lord of the House.' That is the praised position mentioned by Allah, 'That your Lord may raise you to a praised position.' [Quran 17:79]"
[Machine] The sons of Mulaykah, who were from the Ansar, came to the Messenger of Allah and said, "O Messenger of Allah, our mother is obedient to her husband, honors the guests, and fulfills her obligations from before Islam. So where is our mother?" He said, "Your mother is in Hell." They became very upset and the Messenger of Allah called them back and said, "Indeed, my mother and your mother are together." A hypocrite from the people said, "What benefit does this have for him except that the sons of Mulaykah are saved from their mother's fate, while we are following behind them?" A young man from the Ansar said, "I have never seen a man ask the Messenger of Allah more questions than him." He asked the Messenger of Allah, "I can see your parents in Hell." He said, "I have asked my Lord to grant them mercy." He will grant me the Praiseworthy Station. The hypocrite said to the young man from the Ansar, "Ask him what the Praiseworthy Station is." He said, "O Messenger of Allah, what is the Praiseworthy Station?" He said, "It is the Day when Allah will descend to His Throne, and it will creak with measurement of what is between the heaven and the earth. You will be brought barefoot, uncircumcised, and naked. Then Ibrahim will be the first to be clothed. Allah will say, 'Clothe My friend with two garments of Paradise, then dress him in clothes after that.' And I will stand on the right side of Allah, and I will ask about its meaning. The Ansari said to the hypocrite, "Ask him what happens to the river." The hypocrite said, "I have never heard of a river without clay mud or dirt. Ask him about what flows in the river." He said, "It will flow with musk and saffron." He said, "I have never heard of a river in which a rod grew without it bearing fruit. Ask him if there are fruits on those rods." He said, "Yes, there will be pearls and gems." He said, "I have never heard of a river in which someone does not ask about its drink. Ask him about the drink of the river." The Ansari said, "O Messenger of Allah, what is the drink of the river?" He said, "It is whiter than milk and sweeter than honey. Whoever drinks from it will never be thirsty again, and whoever is deprived of it will never taste anything sweeter."

[Machine] I have a friend of mine, and I am in Kufa. Do you have a man you are looking for? I said yes. He said, "This is his ranking, and indeed he is Oways Al-Qarani. I think he will pass by now." He said, so we sat for him, and he passed, and there was a mark on him. He said, "People tread on his heels." He said, "He approaches them and speaks to them about it, but they don't stop. We walked with the people until we entered the mosque in Kufa, and we entered with him. He went to a wall and prayed two Rak'ahs, then he turned his face towards us and said, 'O people, why do you tread on my heels in every way? I am a weak person, and I have needs that I cannot fulfill with you. Do not do that, may Allah have mercy on you. Whoever has any need from me, let him tell me here.'" The man said, and it was 'Umar ibn Al-Khattab who asked a delegation that came to him, "Did someone from his family visit you, like this and like that?" The man said, "People have mentioned you, O Amir al-Muminin, and they did not mention that, as is commonly said. That is not from his mention, what I have told you. The man said, "Oways has taken a covenant and a pledge from the man not to tell anyone else about it." Then he said, "Oways said, 'This majlis (gathering) is attended by three people - a knowledgeable believer, a believer who is not knowledgeable, and a hypocrite. This is like rain that falls from the sky to the earth; it reaches the good and fruitful tree and increases its beauty, freshness, and produce. And it reaches the weak and fruitless tree, and increases its rot and makes its leaves fall. And it reaches the thorns that break and destroy them.'" Then he recited the verse, "And We send down of the Qur'an that which is healing and mercy for the believers, but it does not increase the wrongdoers except in loss." [Al-Isra 82] This Qur'an does not sit with anyone except that it either adds or decreases in him. This is the decree of Allah that He has decreed, healing and mercy for the believers, but it does not increase the wrongdoers except in loss. O Allah, grant me a martyrdom that precedes its pain and its safety precedes its fear, which gives life and sustenance. Then he became silent. The man said, "I walked with him." He asked, "My friend, how do you see the man?" I said, "I have not increased in him except a desire, and I am not one who can leave him." We remained with him, and we did not stay except for a short while until he struck the people again. The commander of the faithful, Ali, was sent, and Oways Al-Qarani was among them. We went out with him and traveled with him, and we would stay with him and descend with him until we reached the presence of the enemy."

[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ took me by the hand and we went until we reached the Ka’bah. He said to me, "Sit down," so I sat down beside the Ka’bah. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ climbed upon my shoulder, then he said to me, "Get up," so I got up. When he saw that I was weak beneath him, he said to me, "Sit down," so I descended and sat down. Then he said to me, "O Ali, climb upon my shoulders," so I climbed upon his shoulders. Then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ stood up with me, and when he stood up with me, it seemed to me that I could reach the sky. I climbed up above the Ka’bah and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ stepped to one side and said to me, "Throw down their biggest idol, the idol of the Quraysh." It was made of copper, supported by iron pegs driven into the ground. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to me, "Repair it," and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ kept repeating to me, "Yes, yes," until he said, "The truth has come, and falsehood has vanished. Indeed, falsehood is ever bound to vanish." [Quran 17:81] I continued to repair it until I gained strength from it. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to me, "Throw it down," so I threw it down and it broke into pieces. I descended from above the Ka’bah and then I and the Prophet ﷺ departed in haste, fearing that someone from the Quraysh or others might see us. Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) said, "We did not come down until the hour was very close."

[Machine] I heard Abu Dharr Al-Ghifari recite this verse: "And We will gather them together on the Day of Resurrection, [fallen] on their faces - blind, dumb and deaf" [Surah Al-Isra, 17:97]. So Abu Dharr said, The trustworthy and truthful one (i.e., Prophet Muhammad ﷺ) told me: "Indeed, people will be gathered on the Day of Resurrection into three groups: those who walk and ride, those who crawl and those who are dragged by the angels on their faces." We said, we already know about the first two groups, what about those who crawl and are dragged? He said: "Allah will inflict a disease on their backs so severe that not a single spot on their backs will remain untouched. A person will even give away his beautiful garden for a hideous, blemished camel."

[Machine] The Quran was revealed in its entirety to the lower heaven, then it was revealed gradually over a period of twenty years. Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, says: {And they do not come to you with an argument except that We come to you with the truth and the best explanation} [Al-Furqan 33]. He also says: {And [mention] the Qur'an, for We have made it distinct, that you may recite it to the people in intervals. And We have sent it down progressively} [Al-Isra 106].
