23. Book of Quranic Exegesis (Tafsīr)
[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Recite the two chapters Al-Baqarah and Al-Imran."
[Machine] "He prayed with them, then recited, 'Allah! There is no deity except Him, the Ever-Living, the Sustainer of existence.' Abu Ubaid said, 'Regarding the different reciters after the people of the two holy cities, Mecca and Medina, and the people of the two Egyptian cities, Kufa and Basra, and the people of Syria and Egypt, and others among the reciters, they recite it as 'Al-Qayyum' [Surah Al Imran 2]. There is no disagreement among them in this. I know this to be the case, and this is also the recitation in our area, which aligns with the manuscript and what the Muslim nation agrees upon. Even though there are two ways of pronunciation in the Arabic language.'"
[Machine] We were sitting with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ in Al-Bat'ha when a cloud passed by. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Do you know what this is?" We replied, "Allah and His Messenger know best." He said, "It is a cloud." We said, "Cloud!" He said, "And the Muzn." We said, "And the Muzn!" He said, "And the 'Anan." We said, "And the 'Anan!" Then he fell silent, and after a while, he said, "Do you know how much is between the sky and the earth?" We replied, "Allah and His Messenger know best." He said, "Between them is a distance of five hundred years of traveling, and between each sky and the sky that follows it is a distance of five hundred years of traveling, and each sky is as thick as five hundred years of traveling. Above the seventh sky, there is an ocean between its upper and lower extremity, just as there is between the sky and the earth. Then, above that, there are eight layers as wide as the distance between a rider's knees and his ears, just as there is between the sky and the earth. And Allah, the Most High, is above that, and nothing of the deeds of the children of Adam is hidden from Him."
[Machine] "From Ibn Abbas, there are indeed decisive verses which are in Surah Al-An'am. Say, 'Come, I will recite what your Lord has prohibited to you. [He commands] that you not associate anything with Him, and to parents, good treatment, and do not kill your children out of poverty; We will provide for you and them. And do not approach immoralities - what is apparent of them and what is concealed. And do not kill the soul which Allah has forbidden [to be killed] except by [legal] right. This has He instructed you that you may use reason.'"
[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "One of the things that I fear for my ummah (community) is that wealth will become abundant among them to the point where they will compete with each other for it, and this will lead to fighting and killing. Another thing that I fear for my ummah is that the Qur'an will be opened to them and both the believer and the disbeliever and the hypocrite will read it. The believer will interpret it in his favor until the end of the verse."
[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to frequently say, "O Turner of hearts, make our hearts firm in Your religion." We said, "O Messenger of Allah, are you afraid for us even though we believe in you?" He said, "Indeed, the hearts of the children of Adam are between two fingers of the Most Merciful, like one heart. He turns them as He wills."
"I heard the Messenger of Allah say: 'There is no heart that is not between two of the Fingers of the Most Merciful. If He wills, He guides it and if He wills, He sends it astray.' The Messenger of Allah used to say: 'O You Who makes hearts steadfast make our hearts steadfast in adhering to Your religion.' And he said: 'The Scale is in the Hand of the Most Merciful; He will cause some peoples to rise and others to fall until the day of Resurrection.'" (Using translation from Ibn Mājah 199)
[Machine] I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ saying, "The heart of the son of Adam is more prone to change than a vessel can tip over when it boils."
[Machine] I heard Ibn Abbas reciting, "{None knows its interpretation except Allah and those who are firmly grounded in knowledge.}" [Al 'Imran 7]. Regarding knowledge, they say, "We believe in it."
[Machine] From the Messenger of Allah ﷺ it is narrated that the first Book descended through one door and on one writing, and the Qur'an descended through seven doors and on seven recitations: a commandment, a prohibition, what is lawful, what is unlawful, what is decisive, what is allegorical, and parables. So make lawful what it permits, prohibit what it forbids, act upon its commands, and refrain from what it prohibits. Take lessons from its parables, apply its decisive verses, believe in its allegorical verses, and say, "We have believed in it, all of it is from our Lord." Only those with understanding will remember.
[Machine] "Umar has called us to believe in this; all of it is from our Lord."
Death of Prophet Yaḥyá (John), the son of Prophet Zakariyyah (Zachariah)
regarding Allah's statement, "They kill the prophets unjustly and they kill those who enjoin justice among people" [Āl ʿImrān 3:21]. He said, ʿĪsá (Jesus), the son of Mary was sent with twelve men from the disciples who taught people. He used to ˹teach them to˺ prohibit them from marrying their nieces. There was a king (Herod Antipas) who had a niece ˹named Herodias˺ who was taken by him so he desired her. He used to fulfill her needs every day.
˹Herodias'˺ mother said to her, "If he asks you about your need, tell him to kill Yaḥyá (John), the son of Zakariyyah (Zachariah)." King ˹Herod˺ asked her, "˹What is˺ your need?" She replied, "My need is for Yaḥyá, the son of Zakariyyah, to be killed." The king said, "Ask for something else." She said, "I ask for nothing else." When ˹Yaḥyá ˺ came, he gave the order, and he was beheaded on a tray.
A drop of his blood continued to boil until Allah sent Bukhtanaṣṣar (Nebuchadnezzar). An old man directed him ˹to the boiling blood˺, and it entered his mind that the killing should not stop until this blood settles down. So he killed seventy thousand people in one day in one stroke, and in one house.
[Machine] "Allah has revealed to your prophet ﷺ, 'I have killed seventy thousand people with the killing of Yahya bin Zakariya, and I will kill seventy thousand people with the killing of your grandson's son, seventy thousand and seventy thousand.'"
[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "Polytheism is more hidden than the crawling of a black ant on a smooth rock in the dark night. And the least of it is that you love something out of injustice, and you hate something out of justice. And that is the religion except for love and hate." Allah, the Almighty, said: "Say, [O Muhammad], "If you should love Allah, then follow me, [so] Allah will love you." [Al-Imran 31].
[Machine] "To fear them as one should fear God." [Surah Al Imran 28]. The pious ones are those who speak with the tongue and have a tranquil heart filled with faith. They do not stretch out their hands to kill anyone, nor do they commit any sins, for they have no excuse."
[Machine] Zakariyah took care of her, so he entered the sanctuary and found grapes with her out of season. Zakariyah said, "How did you come by this?" She replied, "It is from Allah. Indeed, Allah provides for whom He wills without account." Zakariyah said, "The One who provides you with grapes out of season is also capable of granting me a child, although I am old and my wife is barren." Thereupon, Zakariyah called upon his Lord. When he was given the glad tidings of Yahya (John), he said, "My Lord, grant me a sign." Allah replied, "Your sign is that you will not speak to people for three nights consecutively, except by gesture." Zakariyah said, "My tongue shall remain restrained from speech without having any illness, while I am in a sound state."
[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Every Prophet has appointed successors from amongst the prophets, and my successor and Wali (closest friend) among them is my father Ibrahim." Then he recited the verse, "Indeed, the most worthy of Ibrahim among the people are those who followed him [in submission to Allah] and this Prophet [Muhammad] and those who have believed. And Allah is the Wali of the believers." (Surah Al-Imran 3:68)
[Machine] Indeed, the Israelites inherited it (the disease of leprosy) from the women of the tribe, so it would stay with them overnight and they would have sores. Allah (SWT) then made it that they should not eat flesh with veins in it. The Jews made it forbidden, so the verse was revealed: "All food was lawful to the children of Israel except what Israel made unlawful to himself before the Torah was revealed. Say: 'So bring the Torah and recite it, if you are truthful.'" [Surah Al-Imran: 93]. Indeed, this was before the revelation of the Torah.
[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "In the veins of women, there is a drop of Arab sheep's blood, which is not the largest nor the smallest. It is cut into small pieces, then melted and mixed. It is divided into three parts, and every day a portion is drunk on an empty stomach." Anas ibn Sirin said, "I have commanded many people to do so, and all of them have been cured by the permission of Allah, the Exalted."
[Machine] About the first house that was built for people, which is the blessed house in Makkah, is it the first house that was constructed on Earth? He said, "No, but it is the first house in which blessings, guidance, and the station of Ibrahim were placed. And whoever enters it will be safe. If you wish, I can tell you how Allah, the Almighty, commanded Ibrahim to build a house on Earth. Ibrahim was clueless about how to build it, so Allah sent tranquility to him in the form of a gentle wind, and it blew towards the place where the house should be built. The wind had a head, and one of them followed the direction of the wind's head until it settled in the location of the house, encircled by a snake. Ibrahim then initiated the construction, and every day he would build a leg until he reached the place of the black stone. He then said to his son, "Bring me a stone to use as a corner." So his son searched for a suitable stone until he found the black stone fixed in its place. He asked his father, "Where did you get this from?" Ibrahim replied, "Someone who did not rely on your construction brought it." The stone was brought by the angel Jibril (Gabriel) from the sky, and Ibrahim completed its placement.

Al-Aqra' bin Habis stood up and asked, "O Messenger of Allah, is it obligatory every year?" He replied, "If I say yes, it would become obligatory, and if it becomes obligatory, you would not be able to fulfill it every year. Therefore, whoever performs it in excess, it will be considered a voluntary act of worship."

When this verse ʿAnd Hajj (pilgrimage to Makkah) to the house (Kaʿbah) is a duty that mankind owes to Allah, those who can afford the expenses (for oneʿs conveyance, provision and residence)ʿ [Al-ʿImran 3:97] was revealed, they said: O Messenger of Allah ﷺ, is it every year? He remained silent. Then they said: Is it every year? He remained silent, Then they said: Is it every year? He said: ʿNo, if I said yes, it would be obligatory.ʿ Then Allah revealed the words: ʿO you who believe! Ask not about things which, if made plain to you, may cause you troubleʿ [Al-Ma’idah 5:101] up to the end of the Αyah. (Using translation from Aḥmad 905)

[Machine] Abu Bakr Al-Siddiq entered the mosque, and Umar ibn al-Khattab was addressing the people. He went to the house where the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ had passed away, and he uncovered his face, which was covered with a cloth, and he kissed it. He said, "By Allah, Allah will not gather two deaths upon you after your death, which you will not die after." Then he went out to the mosque, and Umar continued addressing the people. Abu Bakr said to Umar, "Sit down, O Umar," but he refused. He spoke to him two or three times, but he refused. So Abu Bakr stood up, performed the funeral prayer, and when he had finished, he said, "As for what follows, whoever worshiped Muhammad, then Muhammad has died. And whoever worshiped Allah, then Allah is alive and does not die." Then he recited the verses, "And We did not grant to any man before you eternity." [Al-Anbiya 34] "Muhammad is not but a messenger. Other messengers have passed away before him." [Ali Imran 144] And he continued reciting until he reached the verse, "And [likewise] the grateful ones." [Ali Imran 144] And he recited that, and the people became convinced of the death of the Messenger Muhammad ﷺ until someone said, "The people did not know that this verse was revealed until Abu Bakr recited it." Az-Zuhri said that Sa'id ibn Al-Musayyib informed me that Umar ibn Al-Khattab said, "When Abu Bakr recited this verse, I was so weak that I fell to the ground, and I became certain that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ had died."

[Machine] He said, "The Prophet ﷺ was not supported in any place as he was on the day of Uhud." He said, "We denied that, so Ibn Abbas said, 'Between me and whoever denied that is the Book of Allah, the Exalted and Glorious.' Indeed, Allah, the Exalted and Glorious, says about the day of Uhud, 'And Allah had certainly fulfilled His promise to you when you were killing the enemy by His permission.'" [Surah Al Imran, 152]. Ibn Abbas says that "killing" here means fighting. He also says, "Until when you lost courage and fell to disputing about the matter and disobeyed after He had shown you that which you love. Among you are some who desire this world, and among you are some who desire the Hereafter. Then He turned you back from them [defeated] that He might test you. And He has already forgiven you. And Allah is full of bounty to the believers." [Surah Al Imran, 152]. He meant by this the archers, for the Prophet ﷺ stationed them in a specific place and then said, 'Protect our backs. If you see us being killed, do not come to our aid, and if you see us gaining booty, do not partake in it.' So when the Messenger of Allah ﷺ gained booty and made permissible the property of the polytheists, the archers uncovered themselves and entered into the booty, holding one another's fingers. They were surprised by the polytheists who began to attack the Muslims, resulting in the death of many Muslims. The Prophet ﷺ and his companions fought until seven or nine of the leaders of the polytheists were killed. The Muslims fought by the mountain and did not reach where people said the battle took place, as it was beneath the Hudaybiyya. Shaytan shouted, 'Muhammad is killed,' and they did not suspect that it was true until the Messenger of Allah ﷺ emerged among them, walking in a state of apprehension. When he saw him, they recognized him by the way he walked. This brought them great joy, as though nothing had befallen them. He then moved away from them, saying, 'The anger of Allah has increased upon a people who killed their Prophet.' He said again, 'O Allah, surely they cannot overpower us.' Then Abu Sufyan shouted from the bottom of the mountain, 'O Hubal, O Hubal, where is the son of Abu Kabsha, where is the son of Abu Quhafa, where is the son of Al-Khattab?' Umar said, 'O Messenger of Allah, should I answer him?' He said, 'Yes.' So when Abu Sufyan shouted, 'O Hubal,' Umar said, 'Allah is the Most High and the Most Great.' Abu Sufyan said, 'The day of Badr was a day of mutual hostility and fighting.' Umar said, 'It is not the same, our dead are in Paradise while your dead are in the Fire.' Abu Sufyan said, 'Indeed, you will find in your dead a similar number. However, that was not according to our plan.' Then he encountered the zeal of ignorance and said, 'If that is the case, then we did not like it.'"

The Prophet ﷺ said: When your brethren were smitten at the battle of Uhud, Allah put their spirits in the crops of green birds which go down to the rivers of Paradise, eat its fruit and nestle in lamps of gold in the shade of the Throne. Then when they experienced the sweetness of their food, drink and rest, they asked: Who will tell our brethren about us that we are alive in Paradise provided with provision, in order that they might not be disinterested in jihad and recoil in war? Allah Most High said: I shall tell them about you; so Allah sent down; "And do not consider those who have been killed in Allah's path." till the end of the verse. And indeed, if the wrongdoers had all that is in the earth entirely and the like of it with it, they would ransom themselves thereby from the worst of the punishment on the Day of Resurrection. And there will appear to them from Allah that which they had not taken into account." (Surah Al 'Imran, 3: 198-199)

[Machine] "Abdullah will be surrounded by what he was stingy with on the Day of Judgment," a snake will have two raisins that it will consume in his grave, and it will say, "I am your wealth that you were stingy with." I heard Yahya ibn Mansur say, "I heard Abu Amr Al-Mustamli say, 'I heard Abu Hisham Al-Rifai say, 'I heard Abu Bakr ibn Ayash say, 'By Allah, I never lied about Abu Ishaq, and I do not see Abu Ishaq lying about Abu Wail, and I do not see Abu Wail lying about Abdullah.'" Ath-Thawri narrated it from Abu Ishaq upon the condition of Al-Bukhari and Muslim.

that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "Indeed the space in Paradise taken up by a whip, is better than the world and what is in it. Recite if you wish: 'And whoever is moved away from the Fire and admitted to Paradise, he indeed is successful. The life of this world is only the enjoyment of deception (3:185).'"
[Machine] The verse was revealed concerning the people of the Book, when the Prophet ﷺ asked them about something, and they concealed it. Then, they came to him and he asked them again, and they informed him about something else. So, they realized that they had already informed him about what he had asked them, and they praised themselves for their secrecy and rejoiced in what they had kept hidden from him of what he had asked them.

[Machine] "That they will come out of the Fire, but they are not to come out of it. [Quran 5:37] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ informed me that they are the disbelievers," Jaber said. I said to him, as stated in [Quran 3:192], "Indeed, whoever you admit to the Fire - you have disgraced him." Allah has indeed disgraced him when he burned him with fire, or with other disgraceful punishments in the deep ocean.

from a man among the children of Umm Salamah, from Umm Salamah that she said: "O Messenger of Allah! I have not heard Allah mentioning anything about women and emigration." So Allah, Blessed and Most High, revealed: "Never will I allow to be lost the work of any of you, be he male or female. You are members one of another (3:195)." (Using translation from Tirmidhī 3023)

[Machine] An enemy from their land came to the Najashi, so the emigrants went to him and said, "We would like to accompany you and fight alongside you so that you can witness our courage and reward us for what you have done with us." Najashi replied, "There is no medicine like the help of Allah rather than the help of people." He then recited the verse, "And indeed, among the People of the Scripture are those who believe in Allah and what has been revealed to you and what was revealed to them, [being] humbly submissive to Allah." [Surah Al Imran 199]

[Machine] Abu Ubaidah was besieged in Syria and the people rebelled against him. Omar wrote to him: "Peace be upon you. Afterward, what comes down to a faithful servant from a state of severity, Allah will make relief for him thereafter. No difficulty overwhelms him who perseveres. O you who have believed, be patient and endure and remain stationed and fear Allah that you may be successful." [Al-Imran 200]. Abu Ubaidah replied to Omar: "Peace be upon you. Afterward, Allah says in his book: 'Know that the worldly life is but amusement and diversion and adornment and boasting to one another and competition in increase of wealth and children.' [Al-Hadid 20] until its end." Omar then left with his letter and sat on the pulpit and read to the people of Medina. Then he said: "O people of Medina, Abu Ubaidah only wants you to be eager for jihad."
