23. Book of Quranic Exegesis (Tafsīr)
[Machine] Abundance of generous, guidance from wise, insight from knowledgeable, and a friend who is sincere.
[Machine] Tell me about the saying of Allah, the Almighty, "And I reached the age of old age" [Maryam: 8], what does "old age" mean? He said, "It is the hardship that comes with old age." The poet Al-Bahr Al-Khafif said, "The newborn is excused, but the one who is in old age is not excused." Ahmad Ibn Hanbal, Muhammad Ibn Ziyad Al-Yashkuri Al-Tahhan, a deceitful liar who fabricates Hadith, and Ibn Shuja, are weak narrators from the Murawwaza.
[Machine] "He used to command them to pray morning and evening."
[Machine] He heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say: "Every son of Adam will come on the Day of Resurrection with sins, except for what is from Yahya bin Zakariya". He then gestured with his hand towards the ground and took a small stick, then he said: "And that is because he did not have what men have except for this stick. That is why Allah named him a leader, a hermit, and a Prophet among the righteous."
[Machine] "She said, 'How can I have a son when no man has touched me and I have not been unchaste?' [Maryam 20] So she conceived him, and she withdrew with him to a remote place."
[Machine] "He heard the sound of the pen as he wrote on the tablet."
[Machine] From Ibn Abbas, may Allah be pleased with him, his statement on the saying of Allah, exalted and glorified be He, "And mention in the Book, Abraham. Indeed, he was a man of truth and a prophet." [Maryam 41]. He said, "The prophets among the Children of Israel were ten: Noah, Saleh, Hud, Lot, Shuayb, Abraham, Ishmael, Isaac, Jacob, and Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon them. There were no prophets who had two names except Israel and Jesus. Israel is Jacob, and Jesus is the Messiah."
[Machine] I heard the messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, recite this verse: "Then there succeeded them a posterity who neglected prayers and followed after lusts. Soon, they will face ruin." (Al-A'raf 169). He, peace be upon him, then said, "After sixty years, there will be a generation who neglect prayer and indulge in desires. They will face misguidance. Then, there will be a generation who will recite the Quran, but their recitation will not go beyond their throats. There will be three types of individuals who recite the Quran: a believer, a hypocrite, and a wicked person." Bashir asked, "What are these three types?" The messenger of Allah replied, "The hypocrite is a disbeliever, the wicked person uses it for his own benefit, and the believer lives by it."
[Machine] I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ saying, "My Ummah will perish because of the People of the Book and the People of Milk." Uqbah asked, "Who are the People of the Book, O Messenger of Allah?" He said, "A group of people who learn the Book of Allah and then argue with the believers using it." Uqbah then asked, "Who are the People of Milk, O Messenger of Allah?" He said, "A group of people who follow their desires and neglect their prayers."
[Machine] On the authority of Abdullah regarding His saying, exalted is He: "So they will [indeed] encounter ghee" [Maryam 59]. He said, "It is a river in hell, deep in its bottom, with a foul taste."
[Machine] "What Allah has made permissible in his book is halal (lawful), and what he has forbidden is haram (forbidden), and what he has remained silent about is a blessing. So accept the blessings from Allah, for Allah does not forget." Then recite this verse: "And your Lord is not forgetful" [Maryam 64].
"I asked Murrah Al-Hamdani about the saying of Allah, Mighty and Sublime is He: There is not one of you but will pass over it (19:71). So he narrated to me that 'Abdullah bin Mas'ud narrated to him saying: 'The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "The people will pass over the Fire, then they avert it based upon their deeds. The first of them (would pass over it) like a flash of lightening, then like the wind, then like a fleeing horse, then like a rider fleeing on a mount, then like a man fleeing, then like one walking." (Using translation from Tirmidhī 3159)
"The sign of the believers upon the Sirat is: O lord, protect (us), protect (us).'" [Abü 'Eisa said:] This Hadith is Gharib [as a narration of AlMughirah bin Shu'bah] we do not know of it except through the narration of 'Abdur-Rahmãn bin Ishaq [and there is something on this topic from Abu Hurairah]. (Using translation from Tirmidhī 2432)
[Machine] "From Abdullah, and there is none of you except that he will come to it (Hellfire) [Maryam 71]. As-Sirāt (the Bridge over Hellfire) is said to be as sharp as the edge of a sword. The first group will pass over it as fast as lightning, the second group as fast as the wind, the third group as fast as the best horses, and the fourth group as fast as the best camels and animals. Then they will pass, and the angels will say, 'O Lord, grant peace, grant peace.'"
[Machine] A caller calls, "O people! Have you not been pleased with your Lord who created you, provided for you, and formed you in proportion? Does He not have the power to assign to each person among you the one whom he follows in this world?" They answer, "Yes indeed, but Satan has misled those who used to worship Uzayr (Ezra). He made them worship the tree, the wood, and the stones. The people of Islam will be left prostrating. They will be told, 'Why do you not go with the people?' They will reply, 'We have a Lord whom we have not seen.' It will be asked, 'Then how do you know your Lord if you have not seen Him?' They will say, 'Between us and Him is a sign. When we see it, we recognize Him.' They will be asked, 'And what is that sign?' They will answer, 'He will reveal a shin.' When it is revealed, a leg will also become visible. They will then be commanded to submit, but their backs will be straight like iron plates and they will not be able to bow down. They will be ordered to raise their heads and a light will be provided to them according to their deeds. Some of them will be given a light equivalent to a mountain in size, some will be given a light greater than that, and others will be given a light equivalent to a palm tree in size. Some will be given lesser light, and the last person who will be given light will have it shining from his big toe. It will flicker, and when it does, he will stop. They will pass over the bridge called as-Sirat. It will be sharp as a sword, having notches and hooks on its sides. It will be said to them, 'Cross over according to the brightness of your light.' Among them, some will pass like the blink of an eye, some like a shooting star, some like a gust of wind, and some like a fast-running man. They will pass according to their deeds until the last one whose light will be shining from his big toe passes. Some people's hands and feet will be tied and their sides will be struck by fire. They will be released and when they are, they will say, 'All praise is due to Allah who has saved us from you after showing us your true form. Indeed, Allah has granted us something that He has not granted to anyone else.' The Messenger of Allah ﷺ once laughed so much that his teeth became visible. A man asked him, 'O Abu Abdur-Rahman! You have narrated this Hadith repeatedly. Every time you reach this point, you laugh.' The Messenger of Allah ﷺ replied, 'I have heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ narrating it repeatedly, and every time he reached this point, he laughed until his molars became visible. Thus, this hadith has become a plaything of mine.'"

We were sitting with ‘Ali ؓ and he recited this verse: “The Day We shall gather the Muttaqoon (the pious) unto the Most Gracious (Allah), like a delegation (presented before a king for honour)” [Maryam 19:85] He said: No, by Allah they will not be gathered on their feet, the delegation will never be gathered on their feet. Rather (they will be gathered) on she-camels the like of which mankind has never seen, on which are sadales of gold. They will ride them until they knock at the gates of Paradise. (Using translation from Aḥmad 1333)

[Machine] He read, "Except for those who take with their Lord a covenant" [Maryam 87]. So he said, "Take with the Merciful a covenant, for indeed Allah says on the Day of Resurrection, 'Whoever has a covenant with me, let him stand up.' So we said to him, 'O Abu Abdur Rahman, teach us.' He said, 'Say: O Allah, Creator of the heavens and the earth, Knower of the unseen and the witnessed, indeed I make a covenant with You in this worldly life that I bear witness that there is no deity except You alone, with no partner, and that Muhammad is Your servant and Messenger. Indeed, if You entrust me to myself, You will bring me near to evil and distance me from good. And indeed, I rely not upon anyone but Your mercy. So make it for me a covenant with You and fulfill it to me on the Day of Resurrection, for surely You do not fail in fulfilling the promise.'"
