23. Book of Quranic Exegesis (Tafsīr) (17/23)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
We have begun in this book with the descent of the Quran, in what has been narrated in the Musnad concerning the recitations, and the mention of the companions who compiled and memorized the Quran, before the interpretation of the Surahs.
[Machine] About Qatadah's saying, "So if We take you away, [O Muhammad], indeed, We will take retribution upon them." [Surah Az-Zukhruf 43:41], Anas narrated, "The Messenger of Allah ﷺ passed away, and the punishment remained. Allah did not dislike anything that His Prophet ﷺ did to his nation until he passed away. There was no Prophet except that he witnessed punishment in his nation, except for your Prophet ﷺ ." [Hadith has a sound chain of narrators, but it was not mentioned in Sahih Al-Bukhari and Sahih Muslim.]
[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Some of my companions, those of the left, will be taken, and I will say, 'My companions, my companions.' It will be said, 'They have continued to apostatize after you.' So I will say as the righteous servant, 'Isa ibn Maryam, said, 'And I was a witness over them as long as I was among them; but when You took me up, You were the Observer over them.'" (Surah Al-Ma'idah, 117)
[Machine] The Prophet ﷺ said, "No people have gone astray after being guided except that they were given to argumentation." Then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ recited, "{They did not harm you except [for some] annoyance. But they have been disputing people}." [Surah Az-Zukhruf, 58]
[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "And indeed, it is knowledge of the Hour" [Surah Az-Zukhruf 61]. Then he ﷺ said, "The stars are a protection for the people of the heavens, so when they leave, what they were promised will come to them. And I am a protection for my companions, as long as I am with them, what they were promised will come to them. And my household is a protection for my Ummah (nation), so when my household departs, what they were promised will come to them." The chain of narration is authentic, and I believe it is a fabricated hadith.
23.44 [Machine] Explanation of Surah Ad-Dukhan
[Machine] "You see the man walking in the markets and his name has already been listed among the dead. Then he recited, 'Indeed, We sent it down during a blessed night. Indeed, We were to warn [mankind]. On that night is made distinct every precise matter' [Adh-Dhukhan 4], meaning the Night of Decree. On that night, the affairs of the world are determined for the following year. 'Authenticated by Al-Bukhari and Muslim.'"
[Machine] "The loss of a believer is mourned for forty mornings" - Authentic chain of narration and it has not been excluded from the authentic collection.
[Machine] The following is the translation of the provided text:
Jaareer (complete sea) the winds swept over their lands, as if they were at an appointed time. Ali asked me, "How did you say, O brother of Bani Tamim?" I replied with a poem and Ali said, "Did you not say, 'How many gardens, springs, crops, and noble places did you leave behind, where you were enjoying fruits? Likewise, we have made them inheritors for another people'" (Quran 44:26). Then he said, "So, my brother, they were inheritors and they became heirs. Indeed, these people denied the blessings, so they were afflicted with punishment. Then he said, 'Beware of denying blessings, lest punishment befall you.'" Abu Hatim said, I asked Muhammad ibn Yazid ibn Sinan, "Did your grandfather Sinan, who was old in age, witness Ali?" He replied, "Yes, he witnessed the events with him."
[Machine] She said, "There was Tubba, a righteous man. Don't you see that Allah, the Almighty, has condemned his people but not him?"
[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "I do not know if he (the person being followed) was a righteous person or not, and I do not know if Dhul-Qarnayn was a prophet or not, and I do not know if the prescribed punishments are an expiation for those who receive them or not."
[Machine] Ibn Abbas asked the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, "In how many days were the heavens and the earth created?" He replied, "Allah created the first day, and the earth was created on Sunday and Monday. The mountains were created, the rivers were split, and fruits were planted on the earth on Tuesday. The sustenance of every land was ordained on Tuesday and Wednesday. Then, Allah rose above the heavens while they were still smoke, and He said to them and to the earth, 'Come willingly or unwillingly.' They both said, 'We come willingly.' He completed them in seven heavens in two days, and He commanded each heaven in its affairs on Thursday and Friday. The last creation was in the latter part of the last hour of Friday. When Saturday came, there was no creation on it. The Jews said about it what they said, so Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, revealed to refute their claim, 'Indeed, We created the heavens and the earth and what is between them in six days, and there touched Us no weariness.'" (Surah Qaf, 50:38)
ابْنُ عَبَّاسٍ سُئِلَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ فِي كَمْ خُلِقَتِ السَّمَاوَاتُ وَالْأَرْضً؟ قَالَ خَلَقَ اللَّهُ أَوَّلَ الْأَيَّامِ الْأَحَدَ وَخُلِقَتِ الْأَرْضُ فِي يَوْمِ الْأَحَدِ وَيَوْمَ الِاثْنَيْنِ وَخُلِقَتِ الْجِبَالُ وَشُقَّتِ الْأَنْهَارُ وَغُرِسَ فِي الْأَرْضِ الثِّمَارُ وَقُدِّرَ فِي كُلِّ أَرْضٍ قُوتُهَا يَوْمَ الثُّلَاثَاءِ وَيَوْمَ الْأَرْبِعَاءِ ثُمَّ اسْتَوَى إِلَى السَّمَاءِ وَهِيَ دُخَانٌ فَقَالَ لَهَا وَلِلْأَرْضِ {ائْتِيَا طَوْعًا أَوْ كَرْهًا قَالَتَا أَتَيْنَا طَائِعِينَ} [فصلت 11] فَقَضَاهُنَّ سَبْعَ سَمَاوَاتٍ فِي يَوْمَيْنِ وَأَوْحَى فِي كُلِّ سَمَاءٍ أَمْرَهَا فِي يَوْمِ الْخَمِيسِ وَيَوْمِ الْجُمُعَةِ وَكَانَ آخِرُ الْخَلْقِ فِي آخِرِ السَّاعَاتِ يَوْمَ الْجُمُعَةِ فَلَمَّا كَانَ يَوْمُ السَّبْتِ لَمْ يَكُنْ فِيهِ خَلْقٌ فَقَالَتِ الْيَهُودُ فِيهِ مَا قَالَتْ فَأَنْزَلَ اللَّهُ ﷻ تَكْذِيبَهَا {وَلَقَدْ خَلَقْنَا السَّمَوَاتِ وَالْأَرْضَ وَمَا بَيْنَهُمَا فِي سِتَّةِ أَيَّامٍ وَمَا مَسَّنَا مِنْ لُغُوبٍ}
[Machine] A man read near him, "{Indeed, the tree of Zaqqum is the food of the sinful} [Ad-Dukhan 44]." So Abu Darda' said, "Say 'the food of the sinful'." The man said, "The food of the rotten." So Abu Darda' said, "Say 'the food of the wicked.'"
[Machine] Indeed, Allah has three robes: the robe of honor, the robe of mercy, and the robe of pride. Whoever seeks honor from other than what Allah has honored, then that is the one that is said to him, "Taste, indeed you are the mighty, the generous." [Ad-Dukhan 49] And whoever shows mercy to people with Allah's mercy, then that is the one that adorns himself with the garment that is fitting for him. And whoever challenges Allah in His attire that is fitting for Him, then indeed Allah says, "It is not fitting for the one who challenges Me that I admit him to Paradise."
“O you who believe! Have fear of Allah as is His due, and die not except as Muslims. [3:102] (Then he said): ‘If a drop of Zaqqum were to be dropped on the earth, it would ruin the livelihood of the people of this world, so how about those who have no food other than it (i.e. Zaqqum)?’” (Using translation from Ibn Mājah 4325)
23.45 [Machine] Exegesis of Surah Ham Al-Jathiyah
[Machine] "From water, light, darkness, wind, and dust," said the man. "Then from what were they created?" He replied, "I do not know." Then the man went to Abdullah ibn Zubayr and asked him the same question. He replied with the same words as Abdullah ibn Umar, saying, "They were created from water, light, darkness, wind, and dust." The man asked, "Then from what were they created?" So Abdullah ibn Abbas recited, "And He has subjected to you whatever is in the heavens and whatever is on the earth - all from Him." The man said, "We had only a person from the Prophet's household saying this."
[Machine] I heard Sufyan Ath-Thawri reciting the words of Allah Almighty: "Do those who commit evils think that We will make them like those who have believed and done righteous deeds - [make them] equal in their life and their death? Evil is that which they judge." (Surah Al-Jathiyah 45:21)
Then he said, "I heard Al-A'mash narrating from Abu Sufyan, who narrated from Jabir ibn Abdullah, that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, 'Every servant will be resurrected upon what he died upon.'"
This was informed to us by Abu Abdullah As-Saffar, who narrated from Ahmad ibn Mihran, who narrated from Abu Nuaim, who narrated from Sufyan, who narrated from Al-A'mash, and he mentioned it.
[Machine] The man from the Arabs used to worship the stone, so whenever he found a better one, he would take it and throw away the old one. Allah, the Almighty, revealed, "Have you seen the one who has taken his desire as his God?" [Surah Al-Jathiyah 45:23].
[Machine] The people of the time of ignorance used to say, "Indeed, time is what destroys us, it is what kills us and brings us to life." Allah responded to their statement, and Az-Zuhri reported from Sa'id ibn Al-Musayyab, who reported from Abu Hurairah, who reported from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ that Allah, the Mighty and Sublime, says, "The son of Adam abuses Me. He curses time, yet I am time, for I alter the day and the night. When I wish, I take them both away." Sufyan (another narrator) recited this verse (in response to their statement), "It is not but our worldly life; we die and live, but we will not be destroyed except by time." [Surah Al-Jathiyah 45:24] The two Shaykhs (Al-Bukhari and Muslim) have agreed to include this narration without its context, and it is authentic according to their criteria.
[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Allah the Almighty said, 'I borrowed from My servant, but he refused to lend to Me, and he cursed Me, and he does not know what he is saying when he says, 'Waa Dahrāhu, Waa Dahrāhu' and I am the Dahr (Time or Eternity)."
Allah, the Exalted and Glorious, said: The son of Adam causes Me pain as he says: Woe be upon the Time. None of you should say this: Woe be upon the Time, as I am the Time (because) I alternate the day and the night, and when I wish I can finish them up. (Using translation from Muslim 2246c)
[Machine] The first thing Allah created was the pen, He created it from light before the creation of the thousand and the letter "lam". The pen shaped itself into a form from light and it was said to it, "Write in the Preserved Tablet." The pen asked, "O Lord, what should I write?" He said, "Write everything that will happen until the Day of Judgment." So when Allah created the creation, He entrusted them to the keepers who would safeguard their actions. Then, on the Day of Judgment, their actions will be presented to them and it will be said, "This is our book that speaks about you with truth. Indeed, We used to record what you used to do." (Surah Al-Jathiyah, 45:29) The two books, the Preserved Tablet and the record of actions, will be presented equally. Ibn Abbas said, "Are you not Arabs? Could the copy (nuskha) be other than a book?"

[Machine] About Umm Al-Alaa, the Ansari woman who gave her allegiance to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ , she said: "Uthman ibn Mazh'un used to attend social gatherings with us when the Ansar and Muhajireen would meet. She said, "Then he fell sick, so we took care of him until he passed away. We shrouded him in his burial clothes. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ entered, and I said, "May Allah have mercy on you, Abu Saa'ib." I bear witness that Allah has honored you. The Prophet ﷺ said, "What makes you say that?" She said, "I don't know, by Allah, O Messenger of Allah." He said, "As for him, certainty has approached him, and I hope for him good from Allah." Then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ recited the verse: "Say (O Muhammad): 'I am not a new thing (among the Messengers), and I do not know what will be done with me or with you..." (Quran 46:9). Umm Al-Alaa said, "By Allah, I will never praise anyone after him." Umm Al-Alaa said, "I saw a tear running from Uthman's eye while he was asleep. So I went to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and mentioned it to him. He said, "That is due to his action."

Sa'd sought permission from Ibn 'Amir, and underneath him was a servant made of silk. He commanded her to be lifted up, so I lifted her up and he entered upon him and underneath him was a bed made of straw. He said to him, "You have sought permission on me, and underneath me is a servant made of silk, so I commanded her to be lifted up." She was then lifted up, and he said to him, "Indeed, you are a noble man, O Ibn 'Amir, if you are not among those whom Allah Almighty has described in the Quran saying, 'Have you exchanged the good things of this worldly life for the Hereafter?' And by Allah, lying on hot embers is more beloved to me than lying on it."

[Machine] "What Allah sent upon 'Ad from the wind was nothing but the predetermined punishment of my Lord." This hadith is narrated with an authentic chain according to the conditions of the two Sheikhs (Bukhari and Muslim). They did not include it in their compilations, but Muslim singled out the narration of Mas'ud ibn Malik according to the conditions of Bukhari and Muslim.
I never saw the Messenger of Allah (May peace be upon him) laugh fully to such an extent that I could see his uvula. He would only smile, and when he saw clouds or wind, his face showed signs (of fear). I asked him: Messenger of Allah! When the people see the cloud, they rejoice, hoping for that it may contain rain, and I notice that when you see it, (the signs of) abomination on your face. He replied: ‘A’ishah! What gives me safety from the fact that it might contain punishment? A people were punished by the wind. When those people saw the punishment, they said: this is a cloud which would give us rain. [Machine] They landed on the Prophet ﷺ while he was reciting the Quran in the shade of a palm tree. When they heard him, they said, "Listen!" They said, "Silence!" They were nine, one of them was Zoba'ah. Allah (Glorified and Exalted be He) revealed: "And (remember) when We sent towards you (Muhammad صلى الله عليه وسلم) a group (of the jinn) to listen to the Qur'an..."; until "...clear misguidance", Surah Al-Imran (3:164). It is an authentic Hadith with a sound chain of narrators and they have not reported it.

"He will be given water of Sadid to drink, he will swallow it..." that the Prophet ﷺ said: " It will be brought toward his mouth and he will dislike it, so whenever it is brought closer to him it will melt his face and the skin of his head will fall into it. Then whenever he drinks from it, his bowels will be severed until it comes out from his anus. Allah, the Blessed and Exalted says: "And they will be given water of Hamim to drink such that it cuts up their bowels..." and He says: "And if they call for drink they will be given water of Muhl which melts the faces, the worst of drinks..." [Machine] I heard Hudhaifah recite the saying of Allah Almighty: "So know, [O Muhammad], that there is no deity except Allah and ask forgiveness for your sin" [Muhammad 19]. He said, "I used to be a man who frequently insulted my family with my tongue, so I said, 'O Messenger of Allah, I fear that my tongue will lead me to the Fire.' The Prophet ﷺ said, 'So where are you from seeking forgiveness? Indeed, I seek forgiveness from Allah a hundred times each day.'"

The Prophet [SAW] said: "The best of prayers for forgiveness is for a person to say: 'Allahumma, anta rabbi, la ilaha illa anta, khalaqtani wa ana 'abduka, wa ana 'ala 'ahdika wa wa'dika mastata'tu, a'udhu bika min sharri ma sana'tu, abuw'u laka bidhanbi, wa abuw'u laka bini'matika 'alayya faghfirli, fa innahu la yaghfirudh-dhunuba illa anta (O Allah, You are my Lord, there is no god but You. If he says this in the morning, believing in it firmly, and dies on that day before evening comes, he will enter Paradise, and if he says it in the evening, believing firmly in it, and dies before morning comes, he will enter Paradise." Al-Walid bin Tha'labah contradicted him. (Using translation from Nasāʾī 5522)

I was sitting with Umar ibn Al-Khattab when he heard a scream. He said, "Oh Yarfaa, look, what is this sound?" He got up, looked, and then came back and said, "It is a girl from the Quraysh being sold by her mother." Umar said, "Pray for me, or he said, "Upon me are the Mujahideen (emigrants) and the Ansar." He did not wait more than an hour until the house and the room were filled. Umar praised and thanked Allah, then he said, "Do you know what this was? It was one of the things that the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ forbade." They said, "No." He said, "Verily, it has become rampant among you." Then he recited, "Then do you think that if you turned away you could cause corruption on earth and break your ties of lineage?" [Muhammad 22]. Then he said, "And what kind of breaking off is worse than a mother being sold among you, while Allah has granted you a broader scope?" They said, "So do what you find necessary." He said, "He wrote in the horizons that a free woman should not be sold, for it is a breaking off and it is not permissible."

23.48 [Machine] Tafsir of Surah al-Fath
[Machine] The Surah al-Fath was revealed between Mecca and Medina regarding the incident of Hudaybiyah, from the beginning to the end.
[Machine] I heard Mujamma' bin Jariyah saying, "We accompanied the Messenger of Allah ﷺ from Al-Hudaybiyah until he reached Kuraa' Al-Ghamim. When people were marching towards the Messenger of Allah ﷺ , some of them said to others, 'What is happening with the people?' They said, 'It was revealed to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ .' Then, some people said, 'Let us move until we find the Messenger of Allah ﷺ standing at Kuraa' Al-Ghamim.' When people gathered around him, he recited to them, 'Indeed, We have granted you a clear conquest.' [Quran 48:1] Some people said, 'Is it a conquest?' He said, 'By the One in Whose Hand is my soul, it is indeed a conquest.'"
[Machine] Opening of Khaybar, so that Allah may forgive you for what preceded of your sin and what follows. (Surah Al-Fath, 48:2) So they said, "O Messenger of Allah, congratulations to you! But what is for us?" So Allah revealed, "So that He may admit the believing men and believing women to gardens beneath which rivers flow." (Surah Al-Fath, 48:5)
[Machine] When we returned from Hudaybiyah, the companions of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ were filled with sadness and sorrow as they had sacrificed their animals in their locations. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "A verse has been revealed to me that is dearer to me than the entire world." We asked him, "What is it, O Messenger of Allah?" He recited, "Verily, We have given you a clear victory. That Allah may forgive you your sins of the past and the future, and complete His favor on you, and guide you on the Straight Path." (Quran 48:1-2) We said to him, "Congratulations to you, O Messenger of Allah! But what about us?" He recited, "That He may admit the believing men and believing women to Gardens beneath which rivers flow, wherein they abide eternally, and remove from them their misdeeds, and that is, in the sight of Allah, the great success." (Quran 48:5) So, when we reached Khaybar, we saw the fortifications of the enemy, and the soldiers of the Prophet ﷺ turned back in fear. Then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Khaybar is destroyed. When we descend upon a people's land, then wretched is the morning of those who have been warned." The narration of Al-Hakam ibn Malik is considered weak because it is only transmitted through martyrdom.

[Machine] We were with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ in Hudaybiyah, near the roots of the tree that Allah Almighty mentioned in the Quran. There was a branch from that tree on the back of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ , so I lifted it off his back. Ali ibn Abi Talib and Suhail ibn Amr were sitting in front of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ . The Messenger of Allah ﷺ then said to Ali, "Write." So he mentioned a few lines from the conversation with Suhail ibn Amr. Abdullah ibn Mugaffal said, "While we were like this, thirty young men came out towards us carrying weapons and anger appeared on their faces. The Prophet ﷺ supplicated against them, and Allah took away their eyesight. We took hold of them and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ asked them, 'Did you come under the protection of anyone or did anyone give you security?' They said, 'O Allah's Messenger, No!' So he let them go and Allah revealed the verse, 'And it is He who withheld their hands from you and your hands from them within the area of Mecca, after He caused you to overcome them. And Allah sees what you do.' (Surah Al-Fath, 48:24)"

Abdullah then said, 'You are the seed, and its harvest is near.' This is a authentic hadith according to the conditions of Al-Bukhari and Muslim, but they did not include it in their collection."

[Machine] "When the verse 'Indeed, those who lower their voices before the Messenger of Allah - they are the ones whose hearts Allah has tested for righteousness' (Quran 49:3) was revealed, Abu Bakr As-Siddiq said, 'By the one who revealed the Book to you, O Messenger of Allah, I will not speak to you except as a secret until I meet Allah, the Mighty and Majestic.' This hadith is authentic according to the conditions of Imam Muslim, and he did not include it in his collection."

[Machine] From the Messenger of Allah ﷺ , it was narrated that he was asked, "O Messenger of Allah, do you see anything that we should do, either something that has been completed or something that we should resume?" He said, "Every person is predisposed to what he was created for." Then Yunus ibn Maisarah approached Sa'id ibn Abdul Aziz and said to him, "If this hadith is confirmed in the Book of Allah Almighty, then what do you say, O son of Halbas?" Sa'id replied to him, "Do you not hear Allah saying in His Book, 'And know that among you is the Messenger of Allah. If he were to obey you in much of the matter, you would be in difficulty, but Allah has endeared to you the faith and has made it pleasing in your hearts and has made hateful to you disbelief, defiance and disobedience. Those are the [rightly] guided. [Al-Hujurat 8]' So tell me, O Sa'id, if these people were neglected as the fabricators claim, where would they have gone? Where would they go where they were favored and beautified for them, or where they were hated and despised?"
