23. Book of Quranic Exegesis (Tafsīr) (15/23)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
We have begun in this book with the descent of the Quran, in what has been narrated in the Musnad concerning the recitations, and the mention of the companions who compiled and memorized the Quran, before the interpretation of the Surahs.
[Machine] I am, but the Messenger of Allah ﷺ informed me that Jabir ibn Abdullah al-Ansari heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say, "There is no divorce for someone who does not possess (anything), and no freeing of slaves for someone who does not possess (anything)."
the Messenger of Allah said: “There is no marriage except with a guardian.” (Using translation from Ibn Mājah 1881)
[Machine] The Prophet ﷺ invited me, so I apologized to him, and he forgave me. Allah Almighty revealed [O Prophet, indeed We have made lawful to you your wives] (Quran 33:50) until [Those [wives] who emigrated with you] (Quran 33:50). She [the wife] said, "So I was not permissible for him. I did not migrate with him. I was among the divorced."
[Machine] He recited the saying of Allah, exalted and glorified be He, "Indeed, Allah confers blessing upon the Prophet and His angels. O you who have believed, ask [Allah to confer] blessing upon him and ask [Allah to grant him] peace" [Quran 33:56]. Thabit said, Sulayman, the servant of al-Hasan ibn Ali, came to us and narrated from Abdullah ibn Abi Talha al-Ansari, from his father, that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ came to us on a certain day and there was a glow on his face. We said, "O Messenger of Allah, we see a glow on your face." He said, "Indeed, the angel came to me and said, 'O Muhammad, your Lord says, would you not be pleased that whenever anyone from your Ummah sends blessings upon you, I send blessings upon him tenfold? And whenever anyone from your Ummah sends salutations upon you, I send salutations back to him tenfold.'" He said, "Indeed, yes."
[Machine] On the authority of the Prophet ﷺ , he said: "Verily, Allah has angels who travel about the earth, informing me about the greetings of my Ummah." This narration has an authentic chain of transmission, but it has not been narrated by anyone except Al-Thawri. It is well-known from him. As for the narration from Al-A'mash, from Abdullah ibn As-Sa'ib, we have not written it except with this chain of transmission.
[Machine] On the authority of the Prophet ﷺ, he said, "Increase your prayers upon me on the day of Friday, for indeed no one prays upon me on Friday except that his prayer is presented to me."
"When a third of the night had passed, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ stood and said: 'O you people! Remember Allah! Remember Allah! The Rajifah is coming, followed by the Radifah, death and what it brings is coming, death and what it brings is coming!'" Ubayy said: "I said: 'O Messenger of Allah! Indeed I say very much Salat for you. How much of my Salat should I make for you?' He said: 'As you wish.'" [He said:] "I said: 'A fourth?' He said: 'As you wish. But if you add more it would be better for you.' I said: 'Then half?' He said: 'As you wish. And if you add more it would be better [for you].'" [He said:] "I said: 'Then two-thirds? 'He said: 'As you wish, but if you add more it would be better for you.' I said: 'Should I make all of my Salat for you?' He said: 'Then your problems would be solved and your sins would be forgiven.'" (Using translation from Tirmidhī 2457)
[Machine] His people had a well which dried up one day, so he went out to wash himself and placed his clothes on a rock. The rock then took hold of his clothes and Moses came out following it, naked, until it reached the gathering of the Children of Israel. They saw him, but no one rushed to cover him. That is what Allah, the Exalted, said: "So Allah cleared him of what they said, and he was honored in the sight of Allah." [Qur'an 33:69]
[Machine] "We offered the trust to the heavens, the earth, and the mountains, but they refused to carry it and were afraid of it. So, man carried it. It was then said to Adam, 'Will you take it and bear its responsibility? If you obey, I will forgive you, but if you disobey, then you shall be warned.' Adam accepted. It lasted no more than the time between the afternoon prayer and the setting of the sun until sin was committed."

23.34 [Machine] Translation: Interpretation of Surah Sabaa
[Machine] On the authority of Anas, when Allah says, "We made iron soft and easy to shape" [Surah Saba, verse 11], Anas said, "Luqman was with Dawood (David) as he was hammering a shield. He grabbed it like this with his hand and started to twist it. Luqman was amazed and wanted to ask him but his wisdom prevented him from asking. When Dawood finished, he poured water on his hand and said, 'This is a true shield of war.' Luqman said, 'Silence is from wisdom, and few are those who practice it. I wanted to ask you, but you kept silent until you satisfied me.'" This hadith is reported by Muslim and Al-Bukhari did not report it.
[Machine] In His saying, Glorified and Exalted be He, "And set forth in detail the story of Sad" [Surah Saba, verse 11]. He said, "Do not strike the nails and widen, causing them to loosen, and do not thicken the nails and narrow the throat, causing it to break, but make it an appropriate measure." This is a strange statement in interpretation, and Abd al-Wahhab did not mention it due to its weakness.
[Machine] She informs him as Allah Almighty has informed {And to Solomon [We subjected] the wind, blowing forcefully, proceeding by his command toward the land which We had blessed. And We are ever, of all things, Knowing} [Saba' 12]. When the pumpkin grew, he asked her for what purpose did it grow. She replied, "For the ruin of this mosque." He said, "Verily, the ruin of this mosque will only occur upon my death." So he got up to pray.
[Machine] I heard Ibn Abbas say that a man asked the Prophet ﷺ about Saba', whether it is a man, a woman, or a land. The Prophet ﷺ replied, "It is a man who had ten children, six of them were born in Yemen and four in Sham. As for the Yemeni people, they are Muz'hij, Kindah, Azd, Ash'ariyyun, Anmar, and Himyar, all of which are good. As for the people of Sham, they are Lakhm, Judham, 'Amilah, and Ghassan."
[Machine] He asked the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, about Saba, so he said, "O Messenger of Allah, is Saba a man, a mountain, or a valley?" The Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, said, "No, it is a man who had ten children. Four of them were Tamim, and six of them were Yamamah, Lakhm, Jadisam, Ghassan, Hamyar, Mudhij, Azd, Kindah, Ash'ariyun, and Anmar. Some descendents of the Anmar tribe are also included." Adh-Dhahabi did not discuss further in his summary.
[Machine] According to the saying of Allah, "[We have not sent you, [O Muhammad], except as a bringer of good tidings and a warner to all mankind]." (Surah Saba, verse 28) Abu Dhar narrated that he sought the Messenger of Allah ﷺ one night and found him standing in prayer. He prolonged his prayer, then said, "Tonight, I have been given five things that no Prophet before me was given. I have been aided with fear that strikes the enemy. The distance of a month's journey has been made a safe sanctuary for me. The earth has been made a place of worship and purification for me, and the spoils of war have been made lawful for me - something that was not made lawful for anyone before me. It was said to me, 'Ask, and it shall be given to you.' So, I have stored it up as an intercession for my Ummah. It will be granted to those who do not associate anything with Allah."
[Machine] "They ask for a response, but it is not the time for a response."
23.35 [Machine] The interpretation of Surah Al-Malaikah
[Machine] "If we inform you of a narration, we bring to you its confirmation in the Book of Allah. Verily, when the servant says, 'Subhan Allah', 'Alhamdulillah', 'La ilaha illa Allah', 'Allahu Akbar', and 'Tabarak Allah', a angel takes hold of them, gathers them under his wing, and ascends with them until he does not pass by any gathering of angels except that they seek forgiveness for the one who said them until he is taken to the presence of the Most Merciful. Then Abdullah (the Prophet) recited, 'To Him ascends good speech, and righteous work raises it' (35:10)."

[Machine] "I accompanied my father towards the Messenger of Allah ﷺ , and my father greeted him and we sat for an hour and had a conversation. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ asked my father, 'Is this your son?' He replied, 'Yes, by the Lord of the Kaaba.' The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, 'Indeed.' He then said, 'I bear witness to him.' The Messenger of Allah ﷺ smiled, delighted by the resemblance between me and my father and by my father's oath about it. Then he said, 'Indeed, your son will neither harm you nor be harmed by you.' The Messenger of Allah ﷺ recited the verse, 'No bearer of burdens will bear the burden of another' [Surah An-Najm: 38] until the end of the verse 'This is a warner of the warners of old' [Surah An-Najm: 56]. 'The chain of narrators is authentic, but they did not mention it in any of their books.'"

Then, when the Surah of "By the star when it descends" was revealed, he continued reciting until he reached the verse "And Ibrahim, who fulfilled [his obligations]" (Surah An-Najm, 37). [Machine] I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say regarding His statement, Exalted and Majestic is He, "So among them is one who wrongs himself, and among them is one who is balanced, and among them is one who outstrips in [good] deeds." [Quran 35:32] He said, "The one who outstrips and the one who is balanced will enter Paradise without being held to account, and the one who wrongs himself will be held to a slight account and then enter Paradise." Narrations differ from Al-A'mash in the chain of this hadith, it is narrated from Ath-Thawri from Al-A'mash from Abu Thabit from Abu Ad-Darda, and it is also said from Shu'bah from Al-A'mash from a man from Ta'if from Abu Ad-Darda, and it is also said from Ath-Thawri likewise from Al-A'mash. He said, Abu Thabit mentioned from Abu Ad-Darda, "And when the narrations become many in a hadith, it appears that the hadith has a basis."

Among them is he who wrongs himself, and among them is he who is moderate, and among them is he who is foremost in good deeds by permission of Allah. That [inheritance] is what is the great bounty'." [Quran 35:32]
Aisha replied, "As for the one who is foremost, it is the one who lived during the lifetime of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and witnessed his life and provisions. As for the one who is moderate, it is the one who followed in their footsteps and acted upon their deeds until they catch up with them. And as for the one who wrongs himself, it is like me and you, and whoever follows our path, and all of them are in Paradise." This hadith has a sound chain of narration and was not mentioned by As-Salat. An-Nasai said, "He is not trustworthy." Ahmad said, "He is not strong."

[Machine] The Banu Salamah were in a neighborhood of the city and they wanted to move closer to the mosque. So Allah revealed, "Indeed, it is We who bring the dead to life and record what they have put forth and what they left behind" (Quran 36:12). [Machine] From the followers of Noah to Ibrahim, following his method and his Sunnah, he reached the age of maturity until his actions were comparable to the actions of Ibrahim. When they submitted to what they were commanded, Allah commanded Ibrahim to present his forehead and he placed his face towards the ground. Ibrahim said, "Do not slaughter me while you are looking at me. Perhaps you will have mercy on me, so do not prepare yourself to slaughter me. Tie my hands to my neck and then place my face on the ground." When he put his hand to slaughter him, the blade did not cut until the call came, "O Ibrahim, you have indeed fulfilled the vision." (Surah As-Saffat, 105) So he held his hand and raised his words, "And We ransomed him with a great sacrifice." (Surah As-Saffat,107) With a great ram that was accepted. Ibn 'Abbas claimed that the sacrificed one was Ismael.

The Messenger of Allah ﷺ recited surah Sad on the pulpit. When he reached the place of prostration (in the surah), he descended and prostrated himself and the people prostrated with him. When the next day came, he recited it. When he reached the place of prostration (in the surah), the people became ready for prostration. Thereupon the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: This is the repentance of a Prophet ; but I saw you being ready for prostration. So he descended and prostrated himself and the people prostrated along with him. (Using translation from Abū Dāʾūd 1410)

He said, "What is it?" He said, "There is no god but Allah." He said, "Will you make the gods one god? This is something strange!" So Allah revealed regarding them: "Saad. Allah disliked that, so he said: "O Dawood, that was not for anyone other than Me. If it were not for My assistance, you would not have been able to handle it and I would have destroyed you in an instant." Dawood said: "O Lord, inform me of this." So, he was afflicted with the trial on that day.

[Machine] "On the authority of the Prophet ﷺ , he said: David ﷺ asked his Lord, 'O Lord, I ask you for your love, the love of those who love you, and the action that will bring me closer to your love. O Lord, make your love dearer to me than myself, my family, and cold water.' The Prophet ﷺ said, 'Whenever David is mentioned and narrated about, it is said, he was the most devout among humans.' This hadith has an authentic chain of narration and was not mentioned by Abdullah ibn Yazid al-Damashqi. These words were said by Ahmad bin Hanbal, who considered them fabricated."
