23. Book of Quranic Exegesis (Tafsīr) (14/23)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
We have begun in this book with the descent of the Quran, in what has been narrated in the Musnad concerning the recitations, and the mention of the companions who compiled and memorized the Quran, before the interpretation of the Surahs.

[Machine] "A man from the polytheists, O Messenger of Allah, and they have killed and expedited, and they have exceeded their limits. How wonderful what you invite us to if you informed us that what we have done is a form of atonement, and then Allah the Almighty revealed, 'And those who do not invoke with Allah another deity' [Al-Furqan 68] and 'Say, 'O My servants who have transgressed against themselves, do not despair of the mercy of Allah' [Az-Zumar 53].' It is authentic according to the conditions of the two sheikhs (referring to Bukhari and Muslim), and they did not exclude it."

23.26 [Machine] The interpretation of Surah Ash-Shu'ara'
[Machine] It was narrated that Abu Burdah bin Abi Musa al-Ash'ari said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ stayed with a Bedouin, so he honored him and said to him: "Give us some milk." So the Bedouin came to him and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to him: "What is your need?" He said: "My camel has exhausted me (with its milk) and my family is milking it." So the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "Is this (camel) unable to produce milk like the old she-camel of the Children of Israel?" So his companions said to him: "O Messenger of Allah! Do the Children of Israel have an old she-camel?" He said: "When Musa (Moses) wanted to lead the Children of Israel out (of Egypt), he lost his way. So he said to the Children of Israel: 'What is this?' They said: 'The scholars of the Children of Israel do not know the location of his grave, except an old woman of the Children of Israel.' So Musa sent for her and he said to her: 'Guide us to the grave of Yusuf (Joseph).' She said: 'No, by Allah, not until you grant me my wish.' He said: 'What is your wish?' She said: 'My wish is to be with you in Paradise.' It was as if he disliked that. So it was said to him: 'Grant her wish.' So he granted her wish and they went with her to a pond of stagnant water. She said to them: 'Dry up this water.' So when they dried it up, she said to them: 'Dig.' So they dug and they took out the bones of Yusuf. When they finished, the path was illuminated like broad daylight." [Al-Shu'ara' 52]

[Machine] She said, "O Messenger of Allah, Abdullah bin Jud'an used to honor guests, maintain family ties, and do good deeds. Will that benefit him?" He replied, "No, for he never said on any day, 'My Lord, forgive me my sins on the Day of Judgment.'" (Authenticated by Al-Albani, not included in the citation)

23.27 [Machine] Exegesis of Surah An-Naml.
[Machine] "The hoopoe used to guide Solomon towards water. So I asked, how is that possible when the hoopoe is set up with a trap and dust is thrown on it? He said, 'May God make you as wise as your father. Was it not when death was approaching, did sight not go away?'"
[Machine] Ibn Abbas said, "Indeed, fate comes when it is less than visible."
[Machine] The Prophet ﷺ said, "Verily, they now know that what I used to say to them in the world was the truth." And Allah Almighty said to His Prophet ﷺ, "Indeed, you do not make the dead hear, nor do you make the deaf hear the call when they turn their backs in retreat." [Surah An-Naml, verse 80]
[Machine] From Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him), who brought the good deed {Al-An'am 160}, he said: "Whoever comes with the testimony that there is no god but Allah" {and whoever comes with an evil deed} [Al-An'am 160], he said: "With polytheism." This is authentic according to the conditions of the two sheikhs (Al-Bukhari and Muslim), but they did not exclude it according to the conditions of Al-Bukhari and Muslim.
23.28 [Machine] Interpretation of Surah Al-Qasas
[Machine] "Empty of everything except the mention of Musa. It almost revealed his secret." (Surah Al-Qasas 10)
He said, "O my son, do not disclose your affair to anyone." And she commanded her sister to observe him. (Surah Al-Qasas 11)
Seek his trace. And We had forbidden him from accepting any wet nurse before. (Surah Al-Qasas 12)
He said, "No one will breastfeed him except that I am around."
[Machine] "'Umar narrated: "Then one of them came to him walking modestly.'"
"Allah said, 'She was walking shyly, in modesty." (Surah Al-Qasas 25)
"He said, 'She used to come to me in obedience, respect, and modesty. She would put her hand on her face.'"
"Musa stood up with her and said, 'Walk behind me and guide me to the way. I will walk ahead of you, for we do not look at the backs of women.'"
"Then she said, 'O my father, hire him. Truly, the best you can hire is the strong, trustworthy one.' (Surah Al-Qasas 26)"
"When she saw his strength and what he said to her, her desire for him increased. So she added, 'Indeed, I want to marry one of your daughters on the condition that you work for me for eight years. If you complete ten, it will be from you, and I do not want to make things difficult for you. You will find me, God willing, one of the righteous.' (Surah Al-Qasas 27)"
"Meaning, in good companionship and fulfilling what I have asked."
"Musa said, 'This is a deal between you and me. Whichever of the two terms I complete, there will be no injustice towards me.' (Surah Al-Qasas 28)"
"He said, 'Yes, Allah is a witness to what we say.' So Musa married her and stayed with her. She sufficed him and took care of his sheep and whatever he needed from her. Then he married Safura, her sister or her half-sister, who used to follow them diligently."
"This narration is authentic according to the conditions set by Al-Bukhari and Muslim."
[Machine] The Messenger of Allah (pbuh) was asked, "Which of the two lives did Moses complete?" He replied, "The furthest and the sweetest."
[Machine] The Prophet ﷺ asked Gabriel, "Which of the two terms did Moses complete?" He replied, "He completed both of them."
[Machine] "I have never performed a prayer without hoping that it would serve as an expiation for the one before it."
[Machine] "From the Messenger of Allah ﷺ , he said, 'Allah has never destroyed a people, a generation, a nation, or the people of a village since He revealed the Torah on the face of the earth with a punishment from the sky, except for the people of the village that were transformed into monkeys. Have you not seen His saying, {And We had certainly given Moses the Scripture after We had destroyed the former generations as enlightenment for the people and guidance and mercy that they might be reminded} [Qasas: 43].' This hadith is authentic according to the conditions of the two sheikhs (Bukhari and Muslim) and they did not include it in their compilations."
[Machine] Abu Hurairah said, "I was not with them at the Mount (Tur) when We called out to them (saying) 'O Muhammad, respond to (the call of) your nation!' I had already responded to you before you even called upon Me, and I had already granted you before you even asked from Me."
[Machine] When Moses came to his people, he commanded them to pay zakat, so Qarun gathered them and said to them, "He has come to you with prayer, and he has come to you with things, so you bear the burden of giving him your wealth." They said, "We cannot bear to give him our wealth. What do you suggest?" He said, "I suggest that I be sent to the oppressor of the Children of Israel, and we send it to him, and he will be deceived by it as if he desired it for himself." So Moses invoked Allah against them and commanded the earth to obey him. Moses said to the earth, "Take them," and it took them by their ankles. They said, "O Moses, O Moses." Then he said to the earth, "Take them," and it took them by their knees. They said, "O Moses, O Moses." Then he said, "To the earth, take them," and it took them by their necks. They said, "O Moses, O Moses." Then he said to the earth, "Take them," and it seized them and disappeared them. Then Allah revealed to Moses, "O Moses, My servants have asked of you and entreated you, but you did not respond to them. By My honor, if they had called upon Me, I would have answered them." Ibn Abbas said, "That is the saying of Allah, 'So We caused the earth to swallow him and his dwelling place.'" (Quran 28:81) The earth swallowed him and brought him down to the lowest ground.
23.29 [Machine] The Interpretation of Surah Al-Ankabut
[Machine] I asked the Prophet ﷺ about the saying of Allah the Almighty: "And you all participate in manifest sin" [Surah Al-Ankabut 29]. He said, "They used to insult and mock the passersby, and this is the manifest sin that they used to commit." [Machine] Regarding the saying of Allah Almighty, "And the remembrance of Allah is greater" [Surah Al-Ankabut 45], So I said, "The remembrance of Allah is through tasbih (glorification), tahleel (saying La ilaha illallah), and takbeer (saying Allahu Akbar)." Then He said, "No, the remembrance of Allah is greater than your remembrance of Him." This hadith has a sound chain of narration, but it was not included in Sahih Al-Bukhari.

from Ibn 'Abbas, regarding the saying of Allah, Most High: Alif Lam Mim. The Romans have been defeated. In the nearest land (30:1-3)" he said: "Ghulibat wa Ghalabat (defeated and then victorious)." He said: "The idolaters wanted the Persians to be victorious over the Romans because they too were people who worshiped idols, while the Muslims wanted the Romans to be victorious over the Persians because they were people of the Book. This was mentioned to Abu Bakr, so Abu Bakr mentioned that to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and he said: 'They will certainly prevail.' Abu Bakr mentioned that to them, and they said: 'Make a wager between us and you; if we win, we shall get this and that, and if you win, you shall get this or that.' He made the term five years, but they (the Romans) were not victorious. They mentioned that to the Prophet ﷺ and he said: "Why did you not make it less (than)" - He (one of the narrators said): I think he said: "ten?" He said: Sa'eed said: "Al-Bid' is what is less than then" - he said: "Afterwards the Romans have been victorious." He said: "That is what Allah Most High said: 'Alif Lam Mim. The Romans have been defeated' up to His saying: 'And on the day, the believers will rejoice - with the help of Allah. He helps whom He wills (30:1-5).' Sufyan said: "I heard that they were victorious over them on the Day of Badr." (Using translation from Tirmidhī 3193)

Then he remained silent for a while and said, "Do you know the distance between the heaven and the earth?" We said, "Allah and His Messenger know best." He said, "The distance between them is a journey of five hundred years, and between every heaven and the heaven that follows it, there is a journey of five hundred years, and each heaven is as thick as a journey of five hundred years, and above the seventh heaven is an ocean, between its upper part and its lower part, just as there is between the heaven and the earth. He said, 'You have asked about something great, yet it is easy for those to whom Allah makes it easy. Worship Allah and do not associate anything with Him, establish the obligatory prayers, give the obligatory charity, and fast in Ramadan.' He said, 'Shall I not inform you of the gates of Paradise?' I said, 'Certainly, O Messenger of Allah.' He said, 'Fasting is a shield, charity extinguishes sins like water extinguishes fire, and a person's standing in prayer at night seeking the pleasure of Allah.' Then he recited the verse: 'Their sides forsake their beds, calling upon their Lord in fear and aspiration, and from what We have provided them, they spend.' [Qur'an 32:16] He said, 'Shall I inform you of the foundation, pillar, and peak of all this?' I said, 'Certainly, O Messenger of Allah.' He said, 'The foundation is Islam, the pillar is prayer, and the peak is Jihad in the cause of Allah. And shall I inform you of the controlling factor in all this?' I said, 'Certainly, O Messenger of Allah.' He pointed with his finger towards his mouth and said, 'Restrain this.' I asked, 'O Messenger of Allah, will we be held accountable for what we say with our tongues?' He said, 'May your mother lose you! [Machine] She said in my house that this verse was revealed: "Indeed, Allah intends to keep away the impurity from you, O people of the household" [Surah Al-Ahzab 33]. She said that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ sent for Ali, Fatimah, Hasan, and Husain, and said, "O Allah, these are the people of my household." Umm Salamah said, "O Messenger of Allah, am I not one of the people of the household?" He replied, "You are of my family, but the people of my household have more right to be considered as such."

[Machine] "Fatimah went to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ to invite him, so he told her to sit down. He came with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ , and I entered with them. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ called for Hassan and Hussein, so he made each of them sit on his thigh, and Fatimah sat next to him. Then he covered them with his robe, and I witnessed it. Then he said, 'Indeed, Allah intends to remove impurity from you, O people of the household, and purify you with a thorough purification.' (Quran 33:33) O Allah, these are the people of my household."

[Machine] I said, "O Messenger of Allah, men are mentioned but women are not mentioned!" So Allah, the Almighty, revealed the verse: "Indeed, the Muslim men and Muslim women, the believing men and believing women..." (Quran 33:35) and also revealed: "Indeed, I will not allow to be lost the work of any worker among you, whether male or female..." (Quran 3:195)
[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "When a man wakes up his wife at night, they should both pray two Rak'ahs, for they will be recorded among those who remember Allah frequently; and likewise, the same applies to women." This Hadith is not attributed to Abu Nuaim, and the Prophet ﷺ did not mention it in the chain of narrators. However, it is narrated by 'Isa bin Ja'far, who is trustworthy.
I was in the Masjid then al-ʿAbbās and ʿAlī came to me and they both said, "O Usāmah, get permission for us from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ." Then I entered upon the Prophet ﷺ and asked for his permission and told him that ʿAbbās and ʿAlī are seeking permission." He said, "Do you know what they need?" I said, "No, by Allah, I do not know." He said, "However, I know, allow them ˹to enter˺."
Then they both entered upon him and both said, "We came to ask you which one of your family members you love the most?" He said, ‘The one I love the most from my family is Fāṭimah b. Muḥmammad.’ They both said, "We are not asking about Fāṭimah." He said, "Then, Usāmah son of Zayd, the one who ˹is˺ the one Allāh had favored upon and I had favored upon."
[Machine] Zaid bin Harithah came to complain to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ about Zainab bint Jahsh. The Prophet ﷺ said, "Hold on to your family." Then the verse "And you conceal within yourself what Allah is to disclose" [Quran 33:37] was revealed as stated in Sahih al-Bukhari and Muslim.
[Machine] When the Prophet ﷺ married Zainab, Umm Sulaim was sent to him with a bowl of food made from stones. Anas said, "The Prophet ﷺ told me, 'Go and invite whoever you meet from the Muslims.'" So, I went and I did not see anyone except that I invited them. Anas said, "The Prophet ﷺ put his hand in the food, supplicated over it, and said, 'Whatever Allah wishes.'" He said, "So they started eating and taking (from the food), and a group remained in the house. The Prophet ﷺ felt shy to ask them to leave and they prolonged their conversation. So, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ left them in the house and Allah revealed, 'O you who have believed, do not enter the houses of the Prophet except when you are permitted for a meal, without awaiting its readiness. But when you are invited, then enter; and when you have eaten, disperse without seeking to remain for conversation. Indeed, that (behavior) was troubling the Prophet, and he is shy of (dismissing) you. But Allah is not shy of the truth. And when you ask (his wives) for something, ask them from behind a partition. That is purer for your hearts and their hearts.'"

[Machine] O Abu Umamah, I saw in my dream that the angels pray upon you every time you enter, every time you leave, every time you stand, and every time you sit. Abu Umamah said, "O Allah, forgive us, and if you wish, the angels will pray upon you." Then he recited, "O you who have believed, remember Allah with much remembrance and exalt Him morning and afternoon. It is He who confers blessing upon you, and His angels [ask Him to do so] that He may bring you out from darknesses into the light. And ever is He, to the believers, Merciful." [Surah Al-Ahzab 33:42]

[Machine] "Narrated by Urwah ibn Sariyah, the companion of the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, he said: I heard the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, saying, 'I am the slave of Allah, and the seal of the prophets, and I am preceded by my father Ibrahim's prayer, and the good news of 'Isa, and the vision of my mother Aminah, which she saw.' And likewise, the mothers of the prophets also have visions. And the mother of the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, saw a light when she gave birth to him that illuminated the palaces of the Levant. Then, Allah recited, 'O Prophet, indeed We have sent you as a witness and a bringer of good tidings and a warner and one inviting to Allah, by His permission, and as a lamp spreading light.' (Surah Al-Ahzab, 33:46)"
