23. Book of Quranic Exegesis (Tafsīr) (13/23)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
We have begun in this book with the descent of the Quran, in what has been narrated in the Musnad concerning the recitations, and the mention of the companions who compiled and memorized the Quran, before the interpretation of the Surahs.
[Machine] "In Surah Al-Hajj, there are two prostrations." And as for the narration of Ibn Umar, it adheres to the conditions of Bukhari and Muslim.
[Machine] He said, "He (Prophet Muhammad) performed two prostrations in the Hajj." And as for the hadith of Abdullah bin Masood and Ammar, it is authentic.
[Machine] About Abdullah ibn Mas'ud and Ammar ibn Yasir, they used to perform two prostrations during the Hajj. As for the hadith of Abu Musa
[Machine] "That Abu Musa performed two prostrations in Surah Al-Hajj and recited the prostration of the last verse in Surah Al-Hajj, so he prostrated and we prostrated with him. As for the hadith of Abu Darda,"
[Machine] "I saw Abu Darda performing two prostrations during the Hajj."
[Machine] She asked the Prophet ﷺ about this verse, "And He has not placed upon you in the religion any difficulty" [Surah Al-Hajj: 78]. He said, "Hardship."
[Machine] They are a slaughter, Suhail, the one with ambitions, and Ibn Aqeel, are not strong.

23.23 [Machine] The Interpretation/Exegesis of Surah Al-Mu'minun
l heard 'Umar bin al-Khattab say: When the Revelation came down to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, a sound could be heard near his face like the buzzing of bees. We waited a while, then he turned to face the qiblah and raised his hands, then he said: “O Allah, give us more (blessing) and do not give us less; honour us and do not humiliate us, give to us and do not deprive us, give precedence to us and do not give others precedence over us; be pleased with us and make us pleased.” Then he said: “Ten verses have been revealed to me; whoever adheres to thern will enter Paradise.” Then he recited to us: “Successful indeed are the believers” [al-Mu'minoon 23:1] until he completed the ten verses. (Using translation from Aḥmad 223)
[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Allah created the Garden of Eden and planted its trees with His own hand. Then He said to it, 'Speak.' So it said, 'Indeed, the believers have succeeded.'"
[Machine] We asked Aisha, the mother of the believers, "What was the character of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ?" She said, "His character was the Quran." Then she said, "Do you recite Surah Al-Mu'minun?" recite, "Certainly will the believers have succeeded." [Quran 23:1] until it reached ten. Then she said, "This is how the character of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ was."
[Machine] Regarding His saying, Exalted be He, "Who are humble in their prayers" [Surah Al-Mu'minun, verse 2], He said: "Humility is in the heart, and that your shoulders soften for the Muslim, and that you do not turn around in your prayer."
[Machine] The translation is as follows: "Indeed, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to raise his gaze towards the sky when he prayed, and then the verse would descend upon him: 'Those who are humble in their prayers' [Al-Mu'minun 2]. And he would lower his head."
[Machine] And I have recited this verse: "And those who guard their private parts, except from their wives or those their right hands possess, for indeed, they are not to be blamed - But whoever seeks beyond that" [An-Nur 6]. Those whom Allah has not married nor given authority have certainly transgressed.
[Machine] Ishaaq recited that 'Abdul-Razzaq narrated from Ma'mar, who narrated from Al-A'mash, who narrated from Abu Salih, who narrated from Abu Hurairah regarding the saying of Allah, "These [believers] are the inheritors." (Surah Al-Mu'minun, 23:10) He said, "They inherit their dwellings and the dwellings of their brothers that have been prepared for them if they obey Allah."
[Machine] I said, "O Messenger of Allah, is the person who commits adultery, steals, and drinks alcohol, but still fears Allah Almighty, considered righteous?" He said, "No, but the person who fasts, prays, and gives charity, and still fears Allah Almighty, is considered righteous."
[Machine] The black person disliked this verse when it was revealed: "The arrogant ones are making a move to abandon it." They said arrogantly, "We are its people, leaving it behind." He said: "They used to abandon it and not rebuild it." (Al-Mu'minun 67)
[Machine] Abu Sufyan came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and said, "O Muhammad, I swear by Allah and the kinship, we have eaten the 'Alhaz' which means wild animals and blood." So Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, revealed: "And indeed, We seized them with punishment, but they did not yield to their Lord, nor did they humbly supplicate" (Surah Al-Mu'minun, 76).
[Machine] I hear Allah say in the Quran, "And Allah is over all things competent." (Surah Al-Ahzab, 33:27) This was a matter that has already happened, and He said, "On that Day, no close friends will avail each other, and no one will ask after another." (Surah Al-Mu'minun, 23:101) And He also said in another verse, "And they will approach one another, inquiring." (Surah As-Saffat, 37:27) Then He mentioned some things, and Ibn Abbas said, "As for His saying, 'And Allah is over all things competent' (Surah Al-Ahzab, 33:27), surely He has always been, and will always be, the First and the Last, the Manifest and the Hidden. As for His saying, 'On that day, no close friends will avail each other, and no one will ask after another' (Surah Al-Mu'minun, 23:101), this is referring to the first blowing of the Trumpet when nothing will remain on the earth. As for His saying, 'And they will approach one another, inquiring' (Surah As-Saffat, 37:50), surely when they enter Paradise, they will approach one another, inquiring."
"And therein they will grimace in displace lips. -He will be grilled by the Fire until his upper lip is folded up reaching the middle of his head, And his bottom lip pains down, until it hits his navel." (Using translation from Tirmidhī 2587)
[Machine] Verily, the people of the fire will call to Malik, but he will not answer them for forty days, then he will turn toward them and say, "Indeed, you are staying [here permanently]." They will say, "Our Lord, you have overcome us, and we have become a people astray." [Surah Al-Mu'minun 23:106] He will say, "Remain despised therein and do not speak to Me."
إِنَّ أَهْلَ النَّارِ يَدْعُونَ مَالِكًا فَلَا يُجِيبُهُمْ أَرْبَعِينَ يَوْمًا ثُمَّ يَرُدُّ عَلَيْهِمْ إِنَّكُمْ مَاكِثُونَ قَالَ هَانَتْ دَعْوَتُهُمْ وَاللَّهِ عَلَى مَالِكٍ وَرَبِّ مَالِكٍ قَالُوا {رَبَّنَا غَلَبَتْ عَلَيْنَا شِقْوَتُنَا وَكُنَّا قَوْمًا ضَالِّينَ} [المؤمنون 106] {قَالَ اخْسَئُوا فِيهَا وَلَا تُكَلِّمُونَ}
23.24 [Machine] Translation: Interpretation of Surah An-Nur
[Machine] He heard Umar ibn al-Khattab say, "Learn Surah Al-Baqarah, Surah An-Nisa, Surah Al-Maidah, Surah Al-Hajj, and Surah An-Nur because they contain obligatory duties."
[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Do not confine them (women) to rooms, and do not teach them writing. Instead, teach them spinning and Surah An-Nur."
[Machine] "Women used to be entrepreneurs in the city, so Muslim men would marry women from among them so that they could support them financially. However, this practice was later prohibited."
[Machine] In His saying, "Do not enter houses other than your own until you have sought permission" [Surah An-Nur 27], He said: The writer made a mistake, it should be "until you have sought permission" (instead of "until you have made yourself known").
"The Messenger of Allah [SAW] said: 'Any woman who puts on perfume then passes by people so that they can smell her fragrance then she is an adulteress.'" (Using translation from Nasāʾī 5126)
I asked Messenger of Allah ﷺ about the sudden glance (that is cast) on the face (of a non-Mahram). He commanded me that I should turn away my eyes. (Using translation from Muslim 2159a)
[Machine] From Abdullah (from the verse): "And let them not display their adornment" [An-Nur 31]. He said, "No anklets, no bracelets, no necklaces, except what appears thereof" [An-Nur 31]. He said, "The clothing."
[Machine] "When this verse was revealed, 'And tell the believing women to reduce their vision and guard their private parts and not expose their adornment except that which appears thereof...' [Quran 24:31], the women of the Ansar (helpers) took their waist wrappers and tore them from the edges and covered their faces with them."
[Machine] From the Prophet, peace be upon him, it was narrated that he said, "And give them from the wealth of Allah which He has given you." [Surah An-Nur 33] He said, "A quarter is left for the legal heirs."
[Machine] "He heard Jabir saying that there was a woman from the Ansar who said, 'My husband forces me to commit adultery.' Then the verse was revealed: 'And do not compel your maidens to prostitution, if they desire chastity.' [Surah An-Nur 33]."
[Machine] "And it is the grave, meaning the pit." The chain of narration is authentic and neither of them narrated it as authentic.
That the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "Eat olive and use its oil, for indeed it is a blessed tree." (Using translation from Tirmidhī 1851)
[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Eat olive oil and use it as a lotion, for it is beneficial and blessed." - Abdullah bin Sa'id and others.
[Machine] That his name be raised and mentioned therein, the men glorify Him therein at morning and evenings. [He is] a light example - like a niche within which is a lamp, the lamp is within glass. [The niche is] as if it were a pearly [white] star lit from [the oil of] a blessed olive tree, neither of the east nor of the west, whose oil would almost glow even if untouched by fire. Light upon light. Allah guides to His light whom He wills. And Allah presents examples for the people, and Allah is Knowing of all things.

[Machine] "We were with the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, on a journey, and we took turns herding the camels. When it was my turn, I released my camels and then returned. I went to the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, while he was delivering a sermon to the people. I heard him say, 'No Muslim performs ablution and perfects it, then stands to pray, knowing what he says, except that his sins will be forgiven as if he was just born.' I could not control myself and said, 'May my father and mother be sacrificed for you, what is better than that?' Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) was next to him and said, 'Do you marvel at this? He said it before you came and what he said is more excellent than that.' I said, 'May my father and mother be sacrificed for you, what is it?' He said, 'It is when a person performs ablution and perfects it, then says when he finishes his ablution, "I bear witness that there is no god but Allah, and I bear witness that Muhammad is His servant and Messenger," the gates of Paradise will be opened for him, and he can enter from any of them he wishes.' He then said, 'The people will be gathered in a single field, where their vision and hearing will penetrate, and the caller will call out, "Let the people know for whom the honor is today." He will repeat this three times, and then he will say, "Where are those whose sides shunned from their beds?" He will then say, "Where are those who were not diverted by buying and selling from the remembrance of Allah?" until the end of the verse [Surah An-Nur, Verse 37]. He will then call out, "Let the people know for whom the honor is today." He will then say, "Where are those who used to praise their Lord?"

[Machine] "And those who disbelieved, their deeds are like a mirage in a lowland which a thirsty one thinks is water until, when he comes to it, he finds it is nothing but finds Allah before him, and He will pay him in full his due; and Allah is swift in account. "And the example of those who disbelieve is like that of one who calls upon that which hears no sound—a mere darknesses within a vast sea which is covered by waves, upon which are waves, over which are clouds—darknesses, some of them upon others. When one puts out his hand [therein], he can hardly see it. And he to whom Allah has not granted light - for him there is no light." So he is like one who walks in darknesses, unable to see where he is going; speech is darkness, actions are darkness, entrance is darkness, exit is darkness, and his destination is towards darkness and the Fire on the Day of Resurrection." [Surah An-Nur 24:39-40]

[Machine] We went to a funeral in the Bab Dimashq area, and with us was Abu Umamah al-Bahili. When he prayed upon the deceased and they began burying him, Abu Umamah said, "O people, you have entered a house in which you share in good deeds and bad deeds, and soon you will leave it for another abode. This indicates the grave, the house of solitude, darkness, worms, and narrowness, except for what Allah expands. Then you will move from it to the stations of the Day of Resurrection. You will be in some of these stations until a matter from the matters of Allah covers the people. Faces will turn bright and faces will turn dark, and then you will move to another house where intense darkness covers the people. Then the light will be divided, and the believer will receive light while the disbeliever and the hypocrite will not receive anything. This is a similitude that Allah, the Most High, has given in His Book, "Or like darknesses within an unfathomable sea which is covered by waves, above which are waves, above which are clouds - darknesses, some of them upon others. When one puts out his hand, he can hardly see it. And he to whom Allah has not granted light - for him there is no light." [Quran 24:40] And the disbeliever and the hypocrite will not be illuminated by the light of the believer, just as the blind person is not illuminated by the sight of the one who can see. The hypocrite says to those who believe, "Look at us and provide for us some of your light." But it is said to them, "Go back and seek light." And a wall is put up between them, with a door within it. Inside it is mercy, and outside of it is torment. They call to them, "Were we not with you?" They reply, "Yes, but you deceived yourselves and delayed, and you were deceived by false hopes until the decree of Allah came. And the Deceiver deceived you concerning Allah." [Quran 4:142] So they return to the place where the light was divided and they find nothing. They turn back to them, and there is a barrier between them. It has a door, inside of which is mercy, and from its front is punishment. They call out to them, "Weren't we with you? We used to pray with you and fight in battles alongside you." They reply, "Yes, but you caused confusion, you waited and hesitated, and false hopes deceived you, until the command of Allah came and you were deceived by Allah." [Quran 57:14] Then it recites, "And how terrible that result is!" [Quran 57:15]

[Machine] When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and his companions arrived in Madinah, the Ansar welcomed them, and the Arabs were amazed at their unity. They would not spend a night or wake up except with their weapons, saying, "Do you think that we can live peacefully and securely, without fearing anyone except Allah?" So Allah revealed the following verses: "Allah has promised those who have believed among you and done righteous deeds that He will surely grant them succession [to authority] upon the earth just as He granted it to those before them and that He will surely establish for them [therein] their religion which He has preferred for them and that He will surely substitute for them, after their fear, security..." (Quran 24:55) until "...but whoever disbelieves after that, then those are the defiantly disobedient." (Quran 24:55), meaning those who deny His blessings, "So those are the defiantly disobedient." 23.25 [Machine] Explanation of Surah Al-Furqan
[Machine] "About Ibn Mas'ood, may Allah be pleased with him."
[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ was asked, "How will the people of hellfire be gathered with their faces on the ground?" He replied, "The same power that made them walk on their feet is capable of making them walk on their faces."
[Machine] A man said, "O Messenger of Allah, those who are resurrected on their faces, how will they be resurrected?" He replied, "Indeed, the One who made them walk on their feet is capable of making them be resurrected on their faces."
[Machine] I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ saying, "Ma'd bin Adnan bin Add bin Zind bin Al-Bara' bin A'raq Ath-Tharra." She said, then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ recited, "He destroyed 'Ad and Thamud and the people of the well and many generations in between. Nobody knows them except Allah." Umm Salamah said, "The descendants of Ath-Tharra are Isma'il bin Ibrahim, Zind bin Hameisan, and Bara' bin Nabt."
[Machine] "There is no year that is not rained upon by another year, but it is Allah who diverts it wherever He wills. And He recited the verse, 'And We have entirely diverted it from them.' [Surah Al-Furqan, verse 50]."
[Machine] Regarding these two verses, their command is concerning those in Surah Al-Furqan who do not invoke any deity besides Allah and do not kill a soul which Allah has forbidden except for a just cause, and also in Surah An-Nisa, "And whoever kills a believer intentionally, his recompense is Hell." I asked Ibn Abbas about this, and he said, "When the verse in Surah Al-Furqan was revealed, the polytheists of Makkah said, 'We have killed the soul which Allah has forbidden, and we have associated partners with Allah, and we have committed indecent actions.' Then the verse was revealed, 'Except for those who repent, believe, and do righteous deeds.'" And he said, "This is referring to those people." As for the verse in Surah An-Nisa, "And whoever kills a believer intentionally," it refers to a man who embraced Islam, performed the deeds of Islam, and then intentionally killed a believer. His recompense is Hell, and there is no repentance for him. I mentioned this to Mujahid, and he said, "It is correct according to the condition of the two sheikhs (referring to Bukhari and Muslim), as long as he has not been expelled." (According to the condition of Bukhari and Muslim)
