23. Book of Quranic Exegesis (Tafsīr) (12/23)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
We have begun in this book with the descent of the Quran, in what has been narrated in the Musnad concerning the recitations, and the mention of the companions who compiled and memorized the Quran, before the interpretation of the Surahs.
"The sign of the believers upon the Sirat is: O lord, protect (us), protect (us).'" [Abü 'Eisa said:] This Hadith is Gharib [as a narration of AlMughirah bin Shu'bah] we do not know of it except through the narration of 'Abdur-Rahmãn bin Ishaq [and there is something on this topic from Abu Hurairah]. (Using translation from Tirmidhī 2432)
[Machine] "From Abdullah, and there is none of you except that he will come to it (Hellfire) [Maryam 71]. As-Sirāt (the Bridge over Hellfire) is said to be as sharp as the edge of a sword. The first group will pass over it as fast as lightning, the second group as fast as the wind, the third group as fast as the best horses, and the fourth group as fast as the best camels and animals. Then they will pass, and the angels will say, 'O Lord, grant peace, grant peace.'"
[Machine] A caller calls, "O people! Have you not been pleased with your Lord who created you, provided for you, and formed you in proportion? Does He not have the power to assign to each person among you the one whom he follows in this world?" They answer, "Yes indeed, but Satan has misled those who used to worship Uzayr (Ezra). He made them worship the tree, the wood, and the stones. The people of Islam will be left prostrating. They will be told, 'Why do you not go with the people?' They will reply, 'We have a Lord whom we have not seen.' It will be asked, 'Then how do you know your Lord if you have not seen Him?' They will say, 'Between us and Him is a sign. When we see it, we recognize Him.' They will be asked, 'And what is that sign?' They will answer, 'He will reveal a shin.' When it is revealed, a leg will also become visible. They will then be commanded to submit, but their backs will be straight like iron plates and they will not be able to bow down. They will be ordered to raise their heads and a light will be provided to them according to their deeds. Some of them will be given a light equivalent to a mountain in size, some will be given a light greater than that, and others will be given a light equivalent to a palm tree in size. Some will be given lesser light, and the last person who will be given light will have it shining from his big toe. It will flicker, and when it does, he will stop. They will pass over the bridge called as-Sirat. It will be sharp as a sword, having notches and hooks on its sides. It will be said to them, 'Cross over according to the brightness of your light.' Among them, some will pass like the blink of an eye, some like a shooting star, some like a gust of wind, and some like a fast-running man. They will pass according to their deeds until the last one whose light will be shining from his big toe passes. Some people's hands and feet will be tied and their sides will be struck by fire. They will be released and when they are, they will say, 'All praise is due to Allah who has saved us from you after showing us your true form. Indeed, Allah has granted us something that He has not granted to anyone else.' The Messenger of Allah ﷺ once laughed so much that his teeth became visible. A man asked him, 'O Abu Abdur-Rahman! You have narrated this Hadith repeatedly. Every time you reach this point, you laugh.' The Messenger of Allah ﷺ replied, 'I have heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ narrating it repeatedly, and every time he reached this point, he laughed until his molars became visible. Thus, this hadith has become a plaything of mine.'"

We were sitting with ‘Ali ؓ and he recited this verse: “The Day We shall gather the Muttaqoon (the pious) unto the Most Gracious (Allah), like a delegation (presented before a king for honour)” [Maryam 19:85] He said: No, by Allah they will not be gathered on their feet, the delegation will never be gathered on their feet. Rather (they will be gathered) on she-camels the like of which mankind has never seen, on which are sadales of gold. They will ride them until they knock at the gates of Paradise. (Using translation from Aḥmad 1333)

[Machine] He read, "Except for those who take with their Lord a covenant" [Maryam 87]. So he said, "Take with the Merciful a covenant, for indeed Allah says on the Day of Resurrection, 'Whoever has a covenant with me, let him stand up.' So we said to him, 'O Abu Abdur Rahman, teach us.' He said, 'Say: O Allah, Creator of the heavens and the earth, Knower of the unseen and the witnessed, indeed I make a covenant with You in this worldly life that I bear witness that there is no deity except You alone, with no partner, and that Muhammad is Your servant and Messenger. Indeed, if You entrust me to myself, You will bring me near to evil and distance me from good. And indeed, I rely not upon anyone but Your mercy. So make it for me a covenant with You and fulfill it to me on the Day of Resurrection, for surely You do not fail in fulfilling the promise.'"
23.20 [Machine] The interpretation of Surah Taha.
[Machine] He is similar to your saying, O Muhammad, in the language of Abyssinia.
[Machine] We were sitting with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ in Al-Bat-ha. Then a cloud passed by, and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Do you know what this is?" We replied, "Allah and His Messenger know best." He said, "It is a cloud." We said, "Yes, a cloud." He said, "And it is a thunderstorm." We said, "And a thunderstorm." He said, "And it is raining." Then he remained silent and later asked, "Do you know how much distance is there between the heaven and the earth?" We replied, "Allah and His Messenger know best." He said, "Between them is a journey of five hundred years, and between every heaven to the next heaven is a journey of five hundred years, and the thickness of each heaven is a journey of five hundred years. And above the seventh heaven, there is a sea between its upper and lower boundaries, as much as between the heaven and the earth. And above that, there are eight Paradises in terms of height, with a distance between each one like that between the heaven and the earth. And Allah is above all of that, and nothing of the acts of the sons of Adam is hidden from Him."
[Machine] About Abbas ibn Abd al-Muttalib's statement regarding the saying of Allah, Mighty and Glorious, "And He will carry the Throne of your Lord above them that Day, [i.e., the Day of Judgment], [the angels] on that Day will be eight [in number]" (Al-Haqqah 17), there are angels in the form of camels between the heavens and the earth, along with their riders, for a distance of thirty-six or fifty-six years.
[Machine] "The secret" [Taha 7] that you do not know, and "the hidden" [Taha 7] that Allah has cast into your heart of things which you did not know.
[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "On the day when Allah spoke to Moses, he was wearing a woollen cloak, a woollen garment, woollen trousers, a woollen turban, and his sandals were made of the skin of a non-intelligent donkey."
[Machine] The Prophet ﷺ used to often talk to us about the people of Bani Israeel during his nights, saying that they would only wake up for a great prayer.
[Machine] When Umm Kulthum, the daughter of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ , was placed in the grave, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "From it (the earth) we created you, and to it we shall return you, and from it we shall bring you forth once again, in the name of Allah and for the cause of Allah, and upon the religion of the Messenger of Allah." When the grave was built upon her, he patted the soil gently and said, "Cover it with moist clay." Then he said, "This is not anything, but it comforts the deceased." He did not speak about it (the soil), and it is a fabricated report because Ali ibn Yazid is an abandoned narrator.
[Machine] When Moses rushed to his Lord, the Samaritan deliberately gathered the jewelry he could find from the children of Israel and made a calf from them. Then he struck it, and behold, it was a lowing calf. The Samaritan said to them, “This is your god and the god Moses.” Harun said to them, “O my people, did not your Lord promise you a good promise? But Samaritan had led them astray.” When Moses returned to the children of Israel and found that Samaritan had misled them, he took hold of his brother's head and said to him, “What did he say?” Moses said to the Samaritan, “What is your explanation?” The Samaritan said, “I seized a handful from the messenger's tracks and threw it away, and that is how my soul prompted me.” So Moses turned to the calf, infused it with his stick, and it became a cold corpse while he was on the shore of the river. No one drank from that water except those who used to worship the calf, and their faces turned yellow like gold. They said to Moses, “What is our repentance?” Moses said, “Some of you should kill others.” So they took their knives, and the man killed his father and his brother, caring not about who he killed, until seventy thousand were killed among them. Then Allah inspired Moses to instruct them to raise their hands, for He had forgiven those who were killed and repented of those who survived.

[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "May Allah have mercy on Moses. Seeing something firsthand is not like hearing about it from someone else. His Lord informed him that his people were being tempted after him, so he did not cast down the Tablets. When he saw them and witnessed their actions, he threw down the Tablets and said, 'May Allah have mercy on Moses, if he had not rushed, he would have heard something different from what he heard.'"

When Eve heard this, she felt remorse and Adam said to her, 'You will experience menstruation and your daughters will as well.'"

Nothing of them will be hastened before its time, nor delayed after its due. If you had called upon Allah to grant you good health or sought refuge in Him from the punishment of the Hellfire or the punishment of the grave, it would have been better or more virtuous."

23.21 [Machine] Interpretation of Surah Al-Anbiya
[Machine] That the Messenger of Allah ﷺ recited the saying of Allah Almighty: "And they do not intercede except for those whom He approves" [Al-Anbiya 28]. So he ﷺ said: "Surely, my intercession is for the people who committed major sins from my nation."
[Machine] "The sky opened up with rain, and the earth burst forth with plants."
[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "The supplication of Dhu al-Nun (Prophet Yunus) when he called upon it while he was in the belly of the fish, 'There is no deity except You; exalted are You. Indeed, I have been of the wrongdoers,' no Muslim person has ever called upon it in any matter except that they were answered."
[Machine] From Abdullah bin Masud, in his explanation of the verse "Then he called out in the darkness" (Qur'an 21:87), he said: "The darkness of the night, the darkness of the belly of the whale, and the darkness of the sea."
[Machine] Regarding the saying of Allah the Most High, "And We gave him (Zakariyya) his wife," Ibn Abbas said, "[The length] was on the tongue of Zakariyya's wife, and Allah the Most High corrected it."
[Machine] Abu Bakr As-Siddiq delivered a speech, praising Allah and expressing gratitude towards him for the qualities he possesses. He advised us to fear Allah and to praise him for his qualities. He also urged us to balance desire with fear, as Allah praised Prophet Zakariya and his family, saying: "Indeed, they used to hasten to good deeds and supplicate Us in hope and fear. And they were, to Us, humbly submissive" (Quran 21:90).
He then reminded us, the servants of Allah, that Allah has entrusted us with our own selves and has taken covenants from us. Allah has given us the opportunity to exchange the ephemeral for the eternal, by acquiring His book. The light of His book cannot be extinguished, and its wonders will never come to an end. Therefore, he advised us to seek guidance and enlightenment from the book of Allah, especially during darkness.
He stressed that we have been created to worship Allah, and that Allah has entrusted us as noble and honorable scribes who know what we do. He reminded us that we will eventually depart from this world, as our knowledge of the appointed time has been concealed from us. If we have the ability to fulfill our obligations while in the service of Allah, we should strive to do so, but only with the help of Allah. He encouraged us to hasten in performing our duties before the appointed time expires, in order to avoid returning to a state of evil deeds. He warned against emulating those who extend their appointed times to others, but forget themselves, and advised us not to follow in their footsteps.
He concluded by emphasizing the need to seek salvation and to seek safety. He reminded us that a seeker will always remain diligent and quick to respond.

"On the night on which the Messenger of Allah ﷺ was taken on the Night Journey (Isra'), he met Ibrahim, Musa and 'Eisa, and they discussed the Hour. They started with Ibrahim, and asked him about it, but he did not have any knowledge of it. Then they asked Musa, and he did not have any knowledge of it. Then they asked 'Eisa bin Maryam, and he said: 'I have been assigned to some tasks before it happens.' As for as when it will take place, no one knows that except Allah. Then he mentioned Dajjal and said: 'I will descend and kill him, then the people will return to their own lands and will be confronted with Gog and Magog people, who will: "swoop down from every mound."[21:96] They will not pass by any water but they will drink it, (and they will not pass) by anything but they will spoil it. They (the people) will beseech Allah, and I will pray to Allah to kill them. The earth will be filled with their stench and (the people) will beseech Allah and I will pray to Allah, then the sky will send down rain that will carry them and throw them in the sea. Then the mountains will turn to dust and the earth will be stretched out like a hide. I have been promised that when that happens, the Hour will come upon the people, like a pregnant woman whose family does not know when she will suddenly give birth.'" (One of the narrators) 'Awwam said: "Confirmation of that is found in the Book of Allah, where Allah says: "Until, when Gog and Magog people are let loose (from their barrier), and they swoop down from every mound (21:96)." [Machine] When the verse "Indeed, you and what you worship other than Allah are the fuel of Hell. He replied, "If these beings were worshiped as gods, they would not have ended up in Hell." Then the verse "Indeed, those for whom the best [reward] has preceded from us - they are from it far removed" [Al-Anbiya 101] was revealed concerning Jesus, Ezra, and the angels.

23.22 [Machine] Interpretation of Surah Al-Hajj
"We were with the Prophet ﷺ on a journey when some of his Companions fell behind. So the Messenger of Allah ﷺ raised his voice reciting these two Ayat: "O mankind! Have Taqwa of your Lord! Verily the earthquake of the hour is a terrible thing..." up to His saying: but Allah's torment is severe (21:1 & 2)." When his Companions heard that, they hastened to catch up with him, since they knew that he had something to say. He ﷺ said: 'Do you know what Day this is? That is the Day when Adam will be called. His Lord will call him and say: O Adam, send forth those who are to be sent to the Fire. He will say: O Lord! How many are to be sent to the Fire? He will say: From every one-thousand there are nine-hundred and ninety-nine for the Fire and one for Paradise. So the people despaired as if they would not smile again. When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ saw the state of his Companions, he said: 'Strive hard and receive the good news. By the One in Whose Hand is the soul of Muhammad, you will be counted with two creations who are immense in numbers; Ya'juj and Ma'juj, and those who have died among the progeny of Adam and the progeny of Iblis.'" He said: "So some of the people's grief went away, and he ﷺ said: 'Strive hard and receive the good news. By the One in Whose Hand is the soul of Muhammad! Among mankind, you are but like the mole on the flank of a camel, or a mark on the foreleg of a beast.'" (Using translation from Tirmidhī 3169)
