9. Funerals (9/14)
[Machine] That the Prophet ﷺ prayed on the grave of a woman and recited the Takbir four times, thus.
[Machine] I saw him and he recited the funeral prayer for four, then he stood for an hour, meaning that he was supplicating. Then he said, "Do you see me raising my hands four times?" They said, "No." He said, "Indeed, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to raise his hands four times." And it was also narrated by Ibrahim Al-Hajari from Ibn Abi Awfa with the same meaning, except that he said, "They said, 'We have seen that.'" He said, "I would not have done so if the Messenger of Allah ﷺ did not do it. He used to raise his hands four times, then he would stay however long Allah willed." Abu Abdullah Al-Hafith narrated to us, Abu Al-Abbas reported to us, Muhammad ibn Ishaq reported, Ja'far ibn Awn reported, Ibrahim Al-Hajari mentioned it in a story he mentioned from Ibn Abi Awfa.
[Machine] Narrated by the Prophet ﷺ , the angels prayed upon Adam and glorified him four times. They said, "This is your tradition, O children of Adam." It is also reported by Uthman ibn Sa'd with a continuous chain of narration from Ubayy ibn Ka'b.
“Offer the funeral prayer for your dead by night or by day.” (Using translation from Ibn Mājah 1522)
9.119 [Machine] Who narrated that he said the takbeer (proclamation of Allah's greatness) five times during a funeral?
9.120 [Machine] Who went beyond the four takbeers to specifically allocate it to the preferred ones?
[Machine] Ali, may Allah be pleased with him, performed the funeral prayer over Abu Qatadah and he repeated the Takbeer (saying "Allahu Akbar") for him seven times. This narration has been reported inaccurately because Abu Qatadah lived for a long time after Ali. We have been narrated from Ali that he repeated the Takbeer four times over Yazid bin Al-Mukaffaf.
[Machine] He used to pray six takbeers for the people of Badr, five for the Companions of Muhammad ﷺ , and four for the rest of the people.
9.121 [Machine] Who followed the doctrine of choice and emulation of the Imam in the number of Takbeer?
[Machine] I said to Ibn Mas'ud, "Indeed, the companions of Mu'adh have come from Sham and they have recited the takbeer (saying Allahu Akbar) five times over the deceased." So Ibn Mas'ud replied, "There is no specific time for reciting the takbeer over the deceased like the imam recites. So when the imam departs, then you may depart."
9.122 [Machine] What is used as evidence that most of the Companions agreed on four [matters], and some of them regarded the increase as abrogated?
[Machine] All of that has been forty-five, so we gathered on four in the takbeer during the funeral.
[Machine] They used to say takbeer (saying "Allahu Akbar") seven, five, and six times during the time of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ or they said four times. Umar ibn al-Khattab then gathered the companions of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and each man informed them of what he had seen. Umar then gathered them together for the funeral prayer and they said four takbeers as long as the prayer. This was narrated by Waki' from Sufyan who said it was four instead of six. And in the narration of Waki' from Mis'ar, from Abdul Malik ibn Iyas ash-Shaybani, from Ibrahim who said: The companions of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ gathered in the house of Abu Mas'ood al-Ansari and they agreed that there should be four takbeers for the funeral prayer.
[Machine] The Prophet ﷺ prayed the funeral prayer for her, raised his hands four times during the prayer, and Abdullah ibn Abdurrahman Abu Umar Al-Khazzaz narrated it from Ikrimah, who is weak. This wording has been transmitted from other narrators, all of whom are weak, except that the gathering of most of the companions on four is evidence of that. And Allah knows best.
[Machine] I prayed with Umar and Ali over the grave of Zainab, the wife of the Prophet ﷺ . Umar then recited the takbeer four times and sent a message to the wives of the Prophet ﷺ , asking who among them would enter her grave. Umar was amazed at the idea of entering her grave, so we sent to him saying that whoever saw her in her lifetime should enter her grave. He said: "We have spoken the truth."
[Machine] "Oh Allah, your servant and the son of your servant has come to you. You are the best of those who receive guests. Oh Allah, make his entrance spacious for him and forgive his sin, for we only know goodness about him, and You know about him more than we do."
[Machine] He showed respect to his mother for forty years and never resented her kindness.
[Machine] Four companions of the Prophet: Abdullah ibn Mas'ood, Al-Bara' ibn 'Azib, Abu Huraira, and 'Uqbah ibn 'Amir.
9.123 [Machine] What is the proper position of the right hand over the left hand in the funeral prayer?
[Machine] The Prophet ﷺ used to raise his hands when praying for a deceased person during the first takbeer, then he would place his right hand over his left hand.
9.124 [Machine] Reading in funeral prayer
[Machine] And he said in the narration, so he recited the opening chapter of the book and a chapter, and the mention of the chapter in it is not preserved.
I offered the funeral prayer behind Ibn ʿAbbas and he recited Al-Fatiha and said, "You should know that it (i.e. recitation of Al-Fatiha) is the tradition of the Prophet ﷺ Muhammad. (Using translation from Bukhārī 1335)
[Machine] "The Prophet ﷺ recited Surah Al-Fatiha after the first takbeer and then recited four takbeers for the deceased."
[Machine] He was informed by a man from the companions of the Prophet that the sunnah (practice) in the funeral prayer is for the Imam to start by saying takbeer (saying Allahu Akbar) loudly, then quietly recite Surat Al-Fatiha after the first takbeer, silently within himself. Then he should send blessings upon the Prophet Muhammad, ﷺ , and make a sincere supplication for the deceased during the remaining takbeers. He should not recite anything else during them. Finally, he should silently say tasleem (saying Assalamu Alaykum) within himself. 6960 He said, and Mutarrif ibn Mazen narrated from Ma'mar, who narrated from Al-Zuhri, who said: Muhammad Al-Fihri narrated to me from Dahhak ibn Qays that he said the same as Abu Umamah and so on.
[Machine] He heard the one behind him, and then he continued his takbeer until there was one takbeer left. He then bore witness to the prayer and made the final takbeer, then he departed. We were informed by Ibn Mas'ood and Abdullah ibn Amr ibn al-'Aas about the recitation of Al-Fatiha in the funeral prayer.
9.125 [Machine] Praying upon the Prophet ﷺ in the funeral prayer
[Machine] Abu Umamah ibn Sahl ibn Haneef, who was one of the prominent Ansar and their scholars, and he was one of the children of those who witnessed the Battle of Badr with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ , informed me. Men from the companions of the Prophet ﷺ informed him that in the funeral prayer, the imam should say the takbeer, then pray upon the Prophet ﷺ , and then complete the prayer with the three takbeers, and then offer a light salutation when leaving. And the Sunnah is for the person behind him to do the same as his imam. Al-Zuhri said: Abu Umamah informed me of that, and Ibn Al-Musayyib heard it and did not object to it. Ibn Shihab said: So I mentioned to Muhammad ibn Suwayd what Abu Umamah had told me about the Sunnah in the funeral prayer, and he said: I also heard it from Dahhak ibn Qais, who narrated it from Habib ibn Muslimah in a prayer he offered for the deceased, similar to the one Abu Umamah informed us of.
[Machine] I swear to God, I inform you that you should begin by saying "Allahu Akbar" (God is the greatest), then send blessings upon the Prophet ﷺ and say, "O Allah, indeed your servant so and so did not associate anything with you that you are the most knowledgeable of. If he was righteous, increase him in his righteousness, and if he was sinful, forgive him. O Allah, do not deprive us of his reward and do not lead us astray after him."
9.126 [Machine] Invocation in Funeral Prayer
The Prophet ﷺ said: When you pray over the dead, make a sincere supplication for him. (Using translation from Abū Dāʾūd 3199)
[Machine] I heard Awf ibn Malik say, "The Messenger of Allah ﷺ prayed over a funeral, and I memorized part of his supplication. He said, 'O Allah, forgive him, have mercy on him, heal him, pardon him, honor his abode, widen his entrance, cleanse him with water, snow, and hail, purify him from sins as a white garment is purified from filth, replace his home with a better home, his family with a better family, his spouse with a better spouse, enter him into Paradise, and protect him from the punishment of the grave and the Fire.' I wished that I was the deceased person." And Abu al-Hasan informed us that Ahmad ibn Salman narrated that Muhammad ibn Ismail narrated that Abu Salih informed him that Muawiyah ibn Salih narrated from Abdul Rahman ibn Jubayr ibn Nufair from his father from Awf, from the Prophet ﷺ , a similar narration. And Abu Abdullah al-Hafiz informed us that Ismail ibn Ahmad al-Jurjani narrated that Muhammad ibn al-Hasan ibn Qutaybah narrated that Harmala narrated that Ibn Wahb informed him that Muawiyah ibn Salih mentioned the hadith with both chains of narration.
I heard the Prophet ﷺ say (while offering prayer on a dead body): O Allah! forgive him, have mercy upon him. Give him peace and absolve him. Receive him with honour and make his grave spacious. Wash him with water, snow and hail, cleanse him from faults as is cleaned a white garment from impurity. Requite him with an abode more excellent than his abode, with a family better than his family, and with a mate better than his mate, and save him from the trial of the grave and torment of Hell. 'Auf b. Malik said: I earnestly desired that I were the dead person to receive the prayer of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ as this dead body had (received). (Using translation from Muslim 963d)

[Machine] He said that he heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ praying for the deceased, saying, "O Allah, forgive our living and our dead, our present and our absent, our males and our females, our young and our old." Al-Awzaa'i said, "Yahya ibn Abi Kathir narrated to me from Abu Salamah ibn Abdur-Rahman with this hadith, and he said, 'Whoever you give life to from among us, give them life upon Islam, and whoever you cause to die from among us, cause them to die upon faith.'" 6970 Abu Abdullah Al-Hafiz and Abu Abdullah As-Susi both reported that Abu Abbas (who is also known as Al-Asamm) narrated to us from Sa'id ibn Uthman At-Tanukhi from Bishr ibn Bakr that he said, "Al-Awzaa'i mentioned this hadith with both chains of narration, except that he said in the beginning, 'O Allah, forgive him, us, and our last, our living and our dead.' This is the authentic hadith of Abu Ibrahim Al-Ash'hali with a connected chain, and the hadith of Abu Salamah is Mursal.

Abu Salamah said, "During this conversation, he said, 'Whoever among us you keep alive, let him live according to Islam, and whoever among us you cause to die, let him die in a state of faith.'" It was narrated by Muhammad ibn Ishaq ibn Yasār from Muhammad ibn Ibrāhīm al-Taymi from Abu Salamah from Abu Hurayrah that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to say in the prayer for the funeral, and he mentioned its meaning. Abu ‘Isa al-Tirmidhi said, in what was reported to me by Muhammad ibn Isma’il al-Bukhari about this chapter, “I asked Muhammad (meaning al-Bukhari), ‘Which of the reports about praying for the deceased from Yahya ibn Abi Kathir is the most sound?’” He said, ‘The most sound reports on the prayer for the deceased are the hadiths of Abu Ibrāhīm al-Ash’hali from his father and grandfather, and even though the name of Abu Ibrāhīm is not known.’ Abu ‘Isa (al-Tirmidhi) said, ‘I said to him, ‘The one who is said to be Abu ‘Isa al-Qatadah, he denied that he is Abu ‘Isa al-Qatadah, and Abu Qatadah is Salimi and this is Ash’hali.’ Muhammad said, ‘The hadith of Abu Salamah from Abu Hurayrah, ‘A’ishah, and Abu Qatadah in this chapter is not confirmed, and the most sound reports in this chapter are the hadiths of ‘Awf ibn Malik.’'

Abu Al-Husayn bin Al-Fadl Al-Qattan informed us, Abdullah bin Ja'far narrated to us, Ya'qub bin Sufyan narrated to us, Abu Al-Walid narrated to us, Shu'bah narrated from Julas, he said, "I heard Uthman bin Shammas narrate to me that Saeed bin Al-Aas sent me to Al-Madinah and I was with Marwan. [Machine] Abdullah Ibn Abbas led us in a funeral prayer in the village. He said the takbeer, then recited Surah Al-Fatiha out loud. Then he sent blessings upon the Prophet ﷺ and said, "O Allah, Your servant, the son of Your servant, the son of Your maidservant, testifies that there is no god but You alone, with no partner, and that Muhammad is Your servant and Messenger. He has become in need of Your mercy while You are free of needing to punish him. He renounced the world and its people, whether he was righteous or sinful, so purify him if he was righteous and forgive him if he was sinful. O Allah, do not deprive us of his reward and do not let us go astray after him." Then he said the takbeer three times, and then he left. He said, "O people, I only recited it so that you would know that it is a Sunnah." The scholar said, "There are many ahadith about the Prophet ﷺ , then 'Umar, 'Ali, Ibn 'Umar, Abu Huraira, and others in the supplication in the funeral prayer. There is nothing specific about the timing of the supplication, and some of what we have mentioned is sufficient. And with Allah is success."

[Machine] That the Messenger of Allah ﷺ prayed over a funeral, made four takbeers (saying "Allahu Akbar" four times), and made the tasleem (saying "Assalamu Alaikum" at the end of the prayer). It was narrated that Ata' ibn As-Sa'ib reported that the Prophet ﷺ gave salaam to the funeral with one tasleem.

[Machine] There are three habits that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to do but people have neglected them. One of them is saying the funeral prayer (takbeer) at a funeral, just like saying takbeer in the regular prayer.
9.130 [Machine] Who said, ‘He surrenders secretly’? This has been narrated in a hadith of Abu Umamah ibn Sahl from some companions of the Prophet ﷺ in one of the two narrations, then he surrenders secretly in the other, then he surrenders in his own self.
[Machine] He used to secretly offer condolences at the funeral.
[Machine] To recite Takbeer (saying Allahu Akbar) then send blessings upon the Prophet ﷺ , then strive in supplicating for the deceased, then offer salutations for oneself. And it is narrated from Abd al-Wahid ibn Ziyad from Ma'mar, but I believe it is a mistake, and the correct narration is from those who narrated it from al-Zuhri from Abu Umamah ibn Sahl ibn Hunayf.
9.131 [Machine] Who said: "He should greet until he hears the one who is after him.
9.132 [Machine] He raises his hands in every takbir.
[Machine] He used to raise his hands during every takbeer of the funeral prayer, and when he stood between the two rak'ahs, meaning in the one that is obligatory, it was narrated from Anas ibn Malik that he used to raise his hands whenever he said the takbeer for the funeral prayer. Ash-Shafi'i said: "I heard similar from Sa'id ibn Al-Musayyib and 'Urwah ibn Az-Zubayr." The Shaykh (i.e. Al-Albani) said: "And it has been narrated from Qays ibn Abi Hazim, 'Ata ibn Abi Rabah, 'Umar ibn 'Abdul 'Aziz, Hasan, and Muhammad ibn Sirin."
9.133 [Machine] The preceding does not wait for the imam to make a second takbir, but rather starts by itself, and when the imam finishes, he makes the remaining takbirs. As evidence from what we have been narrated in the book of prayer from the Prophet ﷺ regarding the preceding in some prayers: "Whatever you catch, pray it, and whatever you miss, complete it." And it has been narrated from Ibn Sirin and Ibn Shihab that they said: "He makes up what he missed from that.
9.134 [Machine] The man misses the prayer with the imam, so he prays it afterwards.
[Machine] "Offer prayers upon him, and he prayed among them, and Qaradha bin Ka'b was their leader."
