9. Funerals (8/14)
[Machine] "Indeed, the standing one is like the one who carries."
9.101 [Machine] The assertion that funeral prayers are abrogated
[Machine] Ali bin Abi Talib stood up when the Messenger of Allah ﷺ stood, then he sat down. In another narration by Malik, he said about Ali bin Abi Talib that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to stand up during funerals, then sit down afterwards.
[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ attended the funerals until they were placed, and the people stood with him. Then, he sat down and ordered them to sit down as well, indicating for them to do so.
[Machine] The Prophet ﷺ stood up, so we stood up and sat down, so we sat down. I said: "In a funeral procession that passed by?" He said: "Yes, in a funeral procession that passed by."
[Machine] "That you all sit down, for surely the Messenger of Allah ﷺ has sat down after standing up."
[Machine] One of them said, "Did the Prophet ﷺ not stand up?"
[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to stand next to the deceased until they were buried. A Jewish man passed by and said, "This is what we do." So the Prophet ﷺ sat down and said, "Sit and oppose them." 6891 Abu Saad Al-Malini narrated to us that Abu Ahmad ibn Adi informed us, narrating from Muhammad ibn Al-Husayn ibn Shahriyar, narrating from Yusuf ibn Salman, narrating from Hatim ibn Ismail, who mentioned it in a similar way except that he did not mention the burial. Al-Bukhari said Abdullah ibn Sulayman ibn Junadah ibn Abi Umayyah, narrated from his father, is not considered as continuous in his narration. We were informed by Abu Saad, who was narrated to by Abu Ahmad, narrated by Al-Junaydi, narrated by Al-Bukhari, who mentioned it.
[Machine] Aisha, the wife of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ , said that the people of the era of ignorance used to stand up when she entered and ask her about her family and who she was.
9.102 [Machine] As requested, the translation of the heading is: "Congregation of those closest to the deceased's prayer".
9.103 [Machine] The guardian expresses his condolences after his death through prayer and seeking forgiveness for him.
[Machine] A man from the tribe of Sa'dah came to the Prophet ﷺ and said, "O Messenger of Allah, my parents have passed away. Is there anything left that I can do for them after their death?" The Prophet replied, "Yes, there are four things: praying for them, seeking forgiveness for them, fulfilling their pledges after their death, and honoring their close friends. Additionally, maintaining the ties of kinship that can only be maintained through them." The man said, "How abundant and sweet these actions are, O Messenger of Allah!" The Prophet said, "Then perform them, for they will reach them."
9.104 [Machine] Who said that the guardian has more right to pray for the deceased than the guardian? This statement has been narrated from Alqamah, Al-Aswad, Suwaid ibn Ghaflah, Ata, Tawus, Mujahid, Salim, Al-Qasim, and Al-Hassan Al-Basri. They said: The imam takes precedence, and it is narrated from Ali ﷺ , and Jarir ibn Abdullah, but it is not established from them. However, it is well-known to be narrated from Hussein ibn Ali.
[Machine] I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say, "Whoever loves them, has loved me. And whoever hates them, has hated me."
[Machine] That when Fatimah, may Allah be pleased with her, died, Ali buried her at night and he held the hand of Abu Bakr Al-Siddiq and led him in offering the prayer for her, as was narrated in this chain of narration and it is authentic.
[Machine] The daughter of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ lived for six months after the Messenger of Allah ﷺ . When she passed away, Ali ibn Abi Talib buried her at night, without consulting Abu Bakr. Ali offered the funeral prayer for her. Abu Abdullah al-Hafiz informed us that Abu Bakr ibn Ishaq al-Faqih reported to us that Ahmad ibn Ibrahim narrated to us, on the authority of Ibn Bukayr, who narrated from Al-Laith, who narrated from Uqail, who narrated from Ibn Shihab, who mentioned it.
9.105 [Machine] Who said the guardian deserves to be prayed upon if he has entrusted it to him.
[Machine] "He prayed on it except for the Imam, and this is the most correct."
[Machine] That Abdullah ibn Masood advised that when I die, Zubair ibn Al-Awwam should pray for me.
[Machine] Their leader was Abu Barzah, and alongside him were A'idh bin Amr and a group of companions of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ .
9.106 [Machine] The funeral prayer with an imam and what is expected for the deceased in the abundance of those who pray for him
[Machine] "That the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: 'Today, the righteous servant As-Hamah has died, so get up and pray on him.' So he stood, and we prayed on him."
[Machine] That the Prophet ﷺ prayed for the Najashi and I was in the second or third row.
If a company of Muslims numbering one hundred pray over a dead person, all of them interceding for him, their intercession for him will be accepted. (Using translation from Muslim 947)
[Machine] I heard the Prophet ﷺ saying, "There is no Muslim who dies and forty men stand by his funeral prayer, not associating anything with Allah, except that they will intercede for him."
[Machine] The Messenger of Allah, ﷺ , said: "Three rows of Muslims praying for a deceased Muslim, seeking forgiveness for him, is obligatory, so when Malik prayed for a deceased person, his family would say to them: 'Arrange yourselves in three rows and then pray upon him.' This is the wording of the hadith of Jarir ibn Hazim, and in another narration by Yazid ibn Harun: 'So that he may be forgiven.'"
9.107 [Machine] The community offers funeral prayer to distinguished individuals.
[Machine] Abu Bakr entered upon the Messenger of Allah ﷺ when he had passed away and then left. It was said to him, "The Messenger of Allah ﷺ has passed away." He said, "Yes, indeed. So know that, as he said, they will come tribe by tribe and pray for him." So they knew that, as he said. They said, "Should he be buried and where?" He said, "Wherever Allah took his soul, for Allah did not take his soul except in a good place. So know that, as he said."
[Machine] When the prayer for the Messenger of Allah ﷺ was performed, the men entered and prayed upon him without an appointed leader, one after another, until they finished. Then the women entered and prayed upon him, followed by the children, and then the slaves, all praying upon him without an appointed leader. No one led them in prayer for the Messenger of Allah ﷺ . Al-Shafi'i, may Allah have mercy on him, said that this was due to the great importance of the matter concerning the Messenger of Allah ﷺ , his father, and his mother. They competed to not appoint a leader in prayer for him, and they prayed upon him repeatedly. Abu Sa'eed reported to us, Abu al-Abbas informed us, and Ar-Rabiah said Al-Shafi'i mentioned it.
9.108 [Machine] The least number of responses to one who prayed the funeral prayer and was sufficient for them to be received.
[Machine] Abu Talhah invited the Messenger of Allah ﷺ to the funeral of Umair bin Abu Talhah when he passed away. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ came and performed the funeral prayer at their house. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ went ahead and Abu Talhah followed him, while Umm Sulaym followed Abu Talhah, and there was no one else with them.
9.109 [Machine] Assembly of funeral prayer time doors
9.110 [Machine] Prayer for funerals and burial of the dead at any time of day or night
[Machine] A person who was a messenger of Allah ﷺ died and they buried him at night. When morning came, they informed him of his death. He asked, "What prevented you from notifying me?" They replied, "It was night and it was dark, so we disliked causing you inconvenience." He then went to his grave and prayed for him, the narration of their conversation being equal.
[Machine] Some people saw fire in the cemetery, so they went towards it and found the messenger of Allah ﷺ in the grave. He was saying, "Bring your companion to me." It was him who used to raise his voice in remembrance (of Allah). And it has been narrated from Abu Dharr that this happened at night and he had a lamp with him.

[Machine] Abu Al-Abbas narrated from Ar-Rabi' that An-Nabahaniyyu narrated from Ash-Shafi'i who narrated from Ath-Thiqa from the people of Al-Madinah with a chain of narration that I do not remember exactly, that they mentioned that he (the Prophet) prayed upon Aqil ibn Abi Talib, and the sun turned slightly yellow before setting, but they did not wait for the sunset with it.
9.111 [Machine] Who dislikes prayer and the grave during the three hours
[Machine] I heard Uqbah ibn Amir al-Juhani saying, "The Messenger of Allah ﷺ forbade us from praying during three hours: when the sun rises until it is fully risen, when the sun is at its zenith until it starts to decline, and when the sun is setting until it has fully set."
[Machine] Zainab bint Abu Salamah passed away and Tariq, the prince of Medina, brought her funeral after the Fajr prayer. She was buried in al-Baqi'. Tariq used to perform the funeral prayer at dawn. Ibn Abi Harmalah said, "I heard Abdullah bin Umar saying to her family, 'Either you pray your funeral prayer now or you leave it until the sun rises.'"
[Machine] He informed him that a funeral was placed in the graveyard of the people of Basra when the sun turned yellow, and no prayer was performed on it until the sun set. So Abu Barzah, the caller, ordered for the prayer to be called and then established it. Then Abu Barzah came forward and performed the Maghrib prayer with them, and among the people were Anas ibn Malik and Abu Barzah from the Ansar, companions of the Prophet. Then they prayed for the funeral.
9.112 [Machine] The mention of the news regarding the prohibition of burying at night and the clarification that it is meant to ensure not missing the funeral prayer.
[Machine] The Prophet ﷺ delivered a sermon one day and mentioned a man among his companions who had passed away, so he was washed and shrouded in a simple shroud. He was buried at night, which displeased the Prophet ﷺ who insisted that the deceased be buried during the day so that he may be prayed upon, unless they were compelled to do otherwise. The Prophet ﷺ also said that when one of you shrouds his brother, he should do so properly.
[Machine] The Prophet ﷺ missed a black woman who used to collect scraps and firewood from the mosque. He asked, "Where is so-and-so?" They replied, "She has passed away." He said, "Why didn't you inform me?" They said, "She passed away at night and we disliked waking you up." So the Messenger of Allah ﷺ went to her grave, prayed for her and said, "When anyone among the Muslims dies, do not prevent me from being informed."
9.113 [Machine] Funerals of Men and Women When They Gather
[Machine] Nine funerals of men and women were arranged, with the men positioned behind the imam and the women positioned behind the qibla. They were all lined up in one row. The funeral of Umm Kulthum bint Ali, the wife of Umar ibn Al-Khattab, was also arranged, along with her son Zaid ibn Umar. The imam at that time was Said ibn Al-As, and among the people were Ibn Abbas, Abu Huraira, Abu Said, and Abu Qatada. Then a young boy was placed behind the imam. A man objected to this, so I looked to Ibn Abbas, Abu Huraira, Abu Said, and Abu Qatada. I asked, "What is this?" They said, "It is the Sunnah, the wording of the Hadith of Abu Abdullah." And it was narrated by Abu Zakariya that Ibn Umar prayed on all nine funerals and said about Umm Kulthum and her son, "They were all buried together, and the rest were the same."
[Machine] In the righteous people are Al-Hasan and Al-Husayn, Abu Huraira, Ibn Umar, and approximately eighty companions of Muhammad ﷺ . Al-Sha'bi narrated about the method of their narration and mentioned that the Imam was Ibn Umar, without mentioning the question. He said that Ibn Hanafiyyah, Al-Husayn, Ibn Abbas, and in another narration Abdullah bin Ja'far were his successors. We were also narrated from Uthman bin Affan, Ali bin Abi Talib, and Wathilah bin Al-Asqa all in consensus.
[Machine] That Wahilah bin al-Asqa' used to pray over the graves of men and women who died from the plague in Sham. The men would be behind him and the women would be behind the qiblah (direction of prayer), and he would position their heads towards the knees of the men.
9.114 [Machine] The Imam stands by the man at his head and by the woman at her elderly woman.
[Machine] "O Abu Hamza, was it like this that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to rise from a woman and a man as you did?" He said, "Yes." He (Al-Ala' bin Ziyad) then approached us and said, "Guard yourselves."
[Machine] Al-Ala ibn Ziyad, O Abu Hamza, is this how the Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to pray over the deceased, like your prayer? He would say the takbeer four times and stand at the head of the man and the feet of the woman? He replied, yes, and he mentioned the hadith. Abu Ghaleb said, so I asked about the action of Anas in standing at the feet of the woman when she is old. They informed me that it was only because the bier was not present, so the imam would stand by her feet, covering her from the people.
[Machine] I prayed behind the Prophet ﷺ for Umm Ka'b, who had passed away while she was a menstruating woman. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ stood up to pray for her and in the middle of his prayer he said a phrase from the hadith of Yahya.
9.115 [Machine] Burial of the two and three in a grave when necessary and prioritizing the best among them and reciting to them
[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to gather the two men who were killed in the Battle of Uhud and wrap them in a single shroud. Then he would ask, "Which of them had taken more Qur'an?" When one of them was pointed out, he would place him in the grave first and say, "I am a witness over these people on the Day of Resurrection," and he commanded to bury them with their own blood without performing funeral prayer or washing them.
[Machine] Narrated by Jabir, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to say regarding the martyrs of Uhud, "Who among these took the most recitation of the Quran?" When it was pointed out to him that it was a man who was buried ahead of his companion, Jabir said, "Wrap my father and uncle in a single piece of cloth."
[Machine] When it was the day of Uhud, they complained to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ about hunger. They said, "O Messenger of Allah, the pits are becoming severe on us for every person." He said, "Dig deeper, improve, and bury two or three in one grave." They said, "O Messenger of Allah, then who shall we bury first?" He said, "Most of them are Quran." So, my father was buried with two others in one grave. It was narrated from Sa'd bin Hisham from his father.
[Machine] The wounds intensified on the day of Uhud, so they complained to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ about the abundance of wounds. He said, "Dig deeper, widen, improve, and bury two or three together in one grave. And prioritize those who have memorized the Quran." This hadith was narrated by Abd al-Warith from Ayyub from Humaid from Abu al-Dahma from Hisham.

9.116 [Machine] What is mentioned in the funeral for women
[Machine] Asmaa, may Allah be pleased with her, said, "Oh Asmaa, I find the actions of women to be disgraceful. They throw a sheet over themselves and describe themselves to men." Asmaa said, "Oh daughter of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, should I not show you something I saw in Abyssinia?" So she called for wet newspapers and softened them, then threw a sheet over herself. Fatimah, may Allah be pleased with her, said, "How beautiful and attractive this is. It distinguishes a man from a woman. When I die, you and Ali wash me, and do not let anyone enter upon me." When she died, Aisha entered and Asmaa said, "Do not enter." Abubakr became suspicious and Asmaa said, "This Khuthaamite woman is causing a barrier between me and the daughter of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. She even made something like the Awrah for her. Then Abu Bakr stood at the door and said, "Oh Asmaa, what made you stop the wives of the Prophet ﷺ from entering upon the daughter of the Prophet ﷺ, and you made something like the Awrah for her?" Asmaa said, "She ordered me not to let anyone enter upon her, and I showed her what I did while she was alive. She then ordered me to do the same for her." Abu Bakr said, "Do what she ordered you to do." Then he left and Ali and Asmaa washed her.

9.118 [Machine] The Number of Takbirs in the Funeral Prayer
[Machine] That the Messenger of Allah ﷺ announced to the people the death of Al-Najashi on the day he died and took them with him to the prayer place and described them and made four takbirs [utterances of "Allahu Akbar"] - wording of the hadith of Al-Shafi'i and Abdullah, and in the narration of Yahya, he went out to the prayer place and made four takbirs.
The Messenger of Allah ﷺ gave us the news of the death of Negus, the ruler of Abyssinia, on the day when he died, and he said (to us): Beg pardon for your brother. Ibn Shihab said that Sa'id b. Musayyib had told that Abu Huraira had narrated to him that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ drew them up in a row in a place of prayer, and offered prayer and recited four takbirs for him. (Using translation from Muslim 951b)
[Machine] That the Messenger of Allah ﷺ offered the funeral prayer for As-Samasih Al-Najashi and raised his voice in takbeer four times.
[Machine] Someone informed me that they witnessed the Prophet ﷺ approaching a forsaken grave, so he arranged them in rows and then he stepped forward and performed the funeral prayer and raised his voice while saying the takbeer four times. Sulaiman said: so I said, "O Abu Amr, who informed you of this?" He said, "Ibn Abbas."
