9. Funerals
[Machine] Abu al-Walid narrated from Abu Amr al-Adib who narrated from Abu Bakr al-Isma'ili who narrated from Abu Khalifa who narrated from Abu al-Walid. Al-Laith narrated from Ibn Shihab who narrated from Abdul Rahman ibn Ka'b ibn Malik that Jabir informed him that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to gather the two men who were killed in the Battle of Uhud in a single shroud. Then he would ask them which one of them had memorized more of the Quran. When one of them was pointed out, the Prophet ﷺ would place him before the dead bodies and say, "I bear witness against these people on the Day of Judgment." He ordered for their burial to be done with their blood, without performing the funeral prayer or washing their bodies. This is the wording of the hadith as narrated by Abu Khalifa.
The martyrs of Uhud were not washed, and they were buried with their blood. No prayer was offered over them. (Using translation from Abū Dāʾūd 3135)
[Machine] On a day of the Battle of Uhud, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ passed by Hamzah ibn Abd al-Muttalib, who had been killed and mutilated. The Prophet ﷺ said, "If it were not for Safiyyah finding him, I would have left him until Allah resurrects him from the bellies of birds and wild animals." He then shrouded him in a mantle, and when his head was wrapped, his feet would show, and when his feet were wrapped, his head would show. He wrapped his head, and he did not offer the funeral prayer for anyone besides him. Then he said, "I bear witness that I will testify against you on the Day of Judgment." He used to gather three or two people in one grave and ask them who had memorized more of the Qur'an, and he would place the one who had memorized it more inside first. He shrouded the two men and the three men in one garment." Abu Abdur Rahman As-Sulami informed us, Ali ibn Omar Al-Hafiz reported, "This is the wording of the hadith, 'and he did not offer the funeral prayer for anyone besides him' which is not preserved." Abu Isa At-Tirmidhi said in his book Al-Ilal, "I asked Muhammad bin Bukhari about this hadith, meaning its chain of narrators, and he said, 'The hadith of Abdul Rahman bin Ka'b bin Malik from Jabir bin Abdullah is a Hasan hadith, and the hadith of Usamah bin Zaid is not preserved. There was a mistake in attributing the hadith to Usamah bin Zaid." The sheikh said, "It has also been said that Az-Zuhri narrated from Abdul Rahman bin Ka'b bin Malik from his father."

[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said on the day of Uhud: "Whoever saw the killing of Hamza?" A man replied: "I am alone and I saw his killing." The Messenger said: "Then go and show us." So, the man went and stood near Hamza. When he saw him, he saw that his stomach had been cut open and mutilated. The man said: "O Messenger of Allah, his body has been mutilated." So, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ disliked looking at him, then he stood between the bodies of the martyrs and said: "I bear witness that those who wrapped their companions in their blood, they will be witnesses against them. For no wounded person is wounded except that on the Day of Resurrection, his wound will bleed the color of blood, and its fragrance will smell like musk." Then the Messenger said: "Bring to me those among you who know the Quran the most, and let them recite it over the deceased." And he said: "In this grave and in this grave there are extra things that are not mentioned in the narration of Lailth." And in the narration of Lailth, there is an addition that is not mentioned in this narration. It is possible that his narration is from Jaber's narration from his father, and it is authentic. Even if the two narrations differ, Lailth bin Saad has a great reputation and his narration is more reliable. Allah knows best. And it is said that Az-Zuhri narrated from Ibn Abi Sua'ir from the Prophet ﷺ as a mursal (unsupported) and summarized (brief).

[Machine] "That the Prophet ﷺ witnessed the killing of the martyrs of Uhud, and he said: ‘I bear witness against them, so keep them company with their blood and flesh.’ Sufyan ibn 'Uyaynah said: 'Ma'mar confirmed this hadeeth to me, and it was narrated from him by Jabir as well.'"

[Machine] When it was the day of Uhud, the Prophet ﷺ honored the martyrs who were killed that day and said, "Join them in their blood, for I bear witness against them." The man, the two men, and the three were buried in one grave, and he would ask which of them had memorized the Quran, and they would bring him forward. Jabir said, "That day, my father and my uncle were buried in one grave."

[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "By the One in whose hand is my soul, no one speaks in the cause of Allah except that on the Day of Resurrection, his wounds will gush forth blood the color of blood, and his scent will be the scent of musk."
