9. Funerals
The Messenger of Allah ﷺ visited his mother's grave and wept and cause those around him to weep. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ then said: I asked my Lord's permission to pray for forgiveness for her, but I was not allowed. I then asked His permission to visit her grave, and I was allowed. So visit graves, for they make one mindful of death. (Using translation from Abū Dāʾūd 3234)
[Machine] We went out with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ on a journey, and we stopped at a place while we were close to a thousand riders. He stood up and prayed two units of prayer, then he came to us with tears in his eyes. 'Umar came to him and said, may my parents be sacrificed for you, O Messenger of Allah. He said, "I sought permission from my Lord to seek forgiveness for my mother, but He did not grant me permission, so I cried and begged for her mercy from the Fire. And I used to prohibit you from visiting graves, but now visit them. I used to prohibit you from keeping the meat of the sacrificed animals for more than three days, but now eat it and keep what appears to be good to you. And I used to prohibit you from drinking from vessels, but now drink from any vessel you wish, and do not drink intoxicants."
[Machine] "The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: I have forbidden you to visit graves, so visit them, for they contain lessons. And I have forbidden you from drinking alcohol, so abstain from it. And I have forbidden you from consuming intoxicants, so do not indulge in it. And I have forbidden you from eating the meat of sacrificial animals, so eat it and save some for later."
[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Indeed, I had forbidden you from visiting graves, eating the meat of sacrificial animals after three days, and drinking from vessels made of wine. But now, visit the graves, for they remind you of the Hereafter and detach you from the worldly life. Eat the meat of sacrificial animals and keep what you wish, for I had only forbidden you from it because good was scarce, but Allah has made it plentiful for the people. Indeed, there is no vessel that renders anything forbidden, and indeed, every intoxicant is prohibited."
[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ forbade mention of the meat of sacrificial animals and vessels, and visiting graves. Then he mentioned his permission for it due to their length. He said, "I had forbidden you from visiting the graves, but then it became clear to me that they soften the heart, bring tears to the eyes, and remind one of the Hereafter. So, visit them, and do not utter harsh words."
[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "I prohibit you from visiting graves, but now visit them and do not say anything that would be considered abandonment, except that there was a man named Rabi'ah who did not meet Abu Sa'id." Abu Zakariya ibn Abi Ishaq informed us on the authority of others who said that Abu al-Abbas narrated that Rabi'ah informed him that Al-Shafi'i, may Allah have mercy on him, informed him that Malik mentioned it.
