9. Funerals (7/14)
[Machine] A woman from Juhaynah came to the Prophet ﷺ while she was pregnant from adultery. The Prophet ﷺ ordered her guardian to treat her kindly. When she delivered her baby, she was brought to the Prophet ﷺ and her clothes were tied around her. Then he ordered that she be stoned. Afterward, he prayed over her. Umar said to him, "O Messenger of Allah, do you pray over her even though she committed adultery?" He replied, "She had repented with such a repentance that if it were distributed among the people of Medina, it would have sufficed them all. Have you found anything better than she sacrificed her life for?”
[Machine] The Prophet ﷺ did not perform the funeral prayer for Ma'iz bin Malik, nor did he prohibit praying for him. It has been narrated that Ali bin Abi Talib said that when he stoned Al-Hamdaniyyah (a certain tribe), he said, "Treat him (the stoned person) as you would with your dead."
9.89 [Machine] Prayer for one who killed themselves without a rightful reason for doing so
[Machine] The Prophet of Allah, ﷺ , said, "Pray behind every righteous person and sinner, and pray for every righteous person and sinner, and strive with every righteous person and sinner."
[Machine] The Prophet ﷺ was approached by a man who had killed himself with a weapon. The Prophet did not offer funeral prayer for him. This is a narration from Awf ibn Sallam. In another narration from Ahmad ibn Yunus, it is mentioned that a man became sick and screamed in pain, so another man came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and informed him that the man had died. The Prophet asked him how he knew, and the man replied that he had screamed in pain. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said that he had not actually died. Then, the man went back and found that the man had indeed killed himself with a weapon, so he went back to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and informed him. The Prophet asked him how he knew, and the man replied that he had seen him kill himself with a weapon. The Prophet then said that he would not offer funeral prayer for him.

[Machine] From Abdullah bin Mas'ud, "When one of you follows a funeral procession, let him hold onto the four corners of the bier, then let him volunteer afterwards or leave, for indeed, this is from the Sunnah."

[Machine] "I saw Sa'd bin Abi Waqqas standing between the two front columns, placing the bier on his shoulder, mentioning the narration of Shafi'i and the narration of Asqalani in its meaning."
[Machine] I saw Uthman ibn Affan carrying his mother's bed between his shoulders, and he didn't leave it until he placed it down.
[Machine] He saw Ibn Umar in the funeral of Rafe' standing between the two ends of the bed.

[Machine] I witnessed the funeral of Rafee' ibn Khadeej, in which Ibn Umar and Ibn Abbas were present. Ibn Umar proceeded until he took hold of the front part of the coffin between the two poles and placed it on his shoulder, then he walked with it.

[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ was in a battle, and when he finished fighting, he said, "Did anyone lose someone?" They said, "By Allah, we lost so and so and so and so." The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Look, did anyone lose someone?" They said, "We lost so and so and so and so." He said, "But I lost Jibreel. Look for him." They found him with seven people whom he had killed, and then they killed him. They went to the Prophet ﷺ and informed him, and he said, "He killed seven, and then they killed him. This is from me, and I am from him. He killed seven, and then they killed him." He repeated this two or three times, and then he spread out his arms and they were placed on the arms of the Prophet ﷺ until a grave was dug for him. He did not have a bed except the arms of the Prophet ﷺ until he was buried. He said, "And he did not mention the washing."
[Machine] That Ibrahim, the son of the Prophet ﷺ, was carried to his funeral on a woven horse. Abu Bakr Muhammad ibn Muhammad informed us about it, Abu al-Husayn al-Fasawi reported it, Abu Ali al-Lu'lu'i narrated it, and Abu Dawud mentioned it.
9.94 [Machine] The translation of the given heading from Arabic to English is: "Funeral Procession Entrance Gate
9.95 [Machine] The haste in walking with the funeral.
[Machine] On the authority of the Prophet ﷺ , he said, "Hurry with the funeral procession. If it is righteous, then you advance it. And if it is otherwise, then you remove it from your necks."
[Machine] "Do not strike my grave with pebbles, and do not follow me with a torch. Rush to me, rush to me, for I have heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ saying, 'When a believer is placed on his bed, he says: Bring me forward, bring me forward.' And when a disbeliever is placed on his bed, he says: O woe to me! Where are you taking me?""
Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "When the funeral is ready (for its burial) and the people lift it on their shoulders, then if the deceased is a righteous person he says, 'Take me ahead,' and if he is not a righteous one then he says, 'Woe to it (me)! Where are you taking it (me)?' And his voice is audible to everything except human beings; and if they heard it they would fall down unconscious . " (Using translation from Bukhārī 1380)
[Machine] "Abu Bakrah caught up with them on part of the Mirbad road, so he loaded the camel with their belongings, tightened the reins on them, and said, 'Leave, by the One whose face my father Al-Qasim has honored! By Allah, I have seen us during the time of the Messenger of Allah almost drowning in sand.' And likewise..."
[Machine] I saw us with the Prophet of Allah, may ﷺ , collecting sand.
[Machine] To them, when you carry me, hurry with me, hurry with me.
9.96 [Machine] Who despised the intensity of rushing for fear of its repercussions
[Machine] We attended the funeral of Maymuna, the wife of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ , with Ibn Abbas in Sarif. Ibn Abbas said, "This is Maymuna, when you lift her coffin, do not shake it or move it forcefully, and be gentle. For the Messenger of Allah ﷺ had nine wives, and he would distribute his time among eight of them and not the other one." They both narrated this in Sahih from the hadith of Ibn Juraij.
[Machine] The Prophet ﷺ passed by a funeral procession, and he was hurrying while it was being carried with difficulty. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Strive to walk calmly during your funerals." It has been narrated from Abu Musa that he advised, saying, "When you carry my funeral, hasten with me in walking." This indicates that what we have been narrated regarding the disapproval of excessive haste is intended here, if it is confirmed that excessive haste is disliked.
9.97 [Machine] Riding upon leaving the funeral
[Machine] The Prophet ﷺ came on a mule-litter and rode it when he left the funeral of Ibn Ad-Dahdah, while we were walking around him.
[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ prayed for Ibn Duhdah and a naked horse was brought to him. A man tamed it and he began to ride it while we followed him. A man from the tribe said, "The Prophet ﷺ said: How many pleasant ordeals will there be for Ibn Duhdah in paradise?"
An animal was brought to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ while he was going with a funeral. He refused to ride on it. When the funeral was away, the animal was brought to him and he rode on it. He was asked about it. He said: The angels were on their feet. I was not to ride while they were walking. When they went away, I rode. (Using translation from Abū Dāʾūd 3177)
[Machine] About Thawban, the freed slave of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ , that he went out for a funeral and saw people riding on their animals. Thawban said to them, "Are you not ashamed? The angels of Allah are walking on their feet, while you are riding on your animals. This is what is preserved with this chain and it is attributed to being stopped."
[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ went out for a funeral and saw people riding. He said, "Do you not feel ashamed? Verily, the angels of Allah are on their feet while you are on the backs of animals." Abu Abdullah al-Hafiz and Abu Bakr ibn al-Hassan al-Qadi narrated to us that Abu al-Abbas Muhammad ibn Ya'qub narrated to us that al-Abbas ibn Muhammad narrated to him that al-Hakam ibn Musa narrated to him that Isa ibn Yunus mentioned it in the same way.
9.98 [Machine] Walking in front of the funeral.
[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ , Abu Bakr, and Umar (may Allah be pleased with them) walk in front of the funeral procession.
[Machine] I saw the Prophet ﷺ , Abu Bakr, and Umar walking in front of the funeral, so I approached him and said, "O Abu Muhammad, it seems that Ma'mar and Ibn Juraij disagree with you in this matter, meaning that they transmit the hadith about the Prophet ﷺ ." He said, "Al-Zuhri has settled it, he narrated it to me, I heard it from him, he repeated it and made it clear from Salim, who heard it from his father." So I said to him, "O Abu Muhammad, Ma'mar and Ibn Juraij both speak about it, and Uthman said that." He said, "Perhaps he said it, but I did not write it down because at that time I was inclined towards the Shia." The Sheikh said, "Ibn Juraij and Ma'mar disagreed on the continuity of the hadith, as it was narrated from each of them connected and transmitted, and it has been said that it was narrated from Ibn Juraij through Ziyad bin Sa'ad from Al-Zuhri."
[Machine] He informed him that he saw the Messenger of Allah ﷺ , Abu Bakr, Umar, and Uthman walking in front of the funeral, except that Bakr did not mention Uthman separately. Hatham, who is trustworthy, said that there was a difference of opinion on Ali and Yunus bin Yazid. It was said about each of them, regarding the Zuhri chain, that it was continuous and it was said to be disconnected. And whoever connected it and relied on its connection and there was no disagreement about it is Sufyan bin Uyaynah, who is a trustworthy proof. And Allah knows best.
[Machine] He saw Umar ibn Al-Khattab leading the people in front of the funeral of Zainab bint Jahsh.
[Machine] Abu Huraira and Hasan ibn Ali are walking in front of the funeral procession.
[Machine] I asked Abu Hazim, "Did you attend a funeral where a group of scholars walked in front of it?" He replied, "Yes, I saw Abdullah ibn Umar, Hassan ibn Ali, and Ibn Zubayr walking in front of it until it was laid down."
[Machine] I saw Ibn Umar and Ubayd bin Umayr walking in front of the funeral procession. They advanced and sat down to talk. When it caught up with them, they stood up.
[Machine] Abu Huraira, Abdullah ibn Umar, Abu Asid al-Saadi, and Abu Qatadah were walking in front of the funeral.
[Machine] I came to the city and saw the companions of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ from the migrants and the supporters walking in front of the funeral.
9.99 [Machine] Walking behind her
[Machine] On her left side and her right side, and the miscarriage is prayed upon and her parents are called upon for well-being and mercy.
[Machine] The journey below the grave, if it is good, it is hastened towards it, and if it is otherwise, it is a distance for the people of the Fire. The funeral procession is followed, and there is no one who precedes it except that Abu Majid is unknown, and Yahya al-Jabir weakened him, a group of the people of narration. And Allah knows best.
[Machine] Bakr and Umar used to walk in front of the funeral, while Ali walked behind it. It was said to Ali, "Indeed, they walk in front of it." He said, "Indeed, they know that walking behind it is better than walking in front of it, just as the virtue of a person's prayer in congregation is better than his prayer alone. However, they are lenient and make it easier for people. This is the son of Khirash, or it was said, the son of Aws bin Khirash Al-Kindi, who narrates from Sa'eed bin Abdul Rahman bin Abza. This narration and the evidences regarding walking in front of the funeral are more authentic and more plentiful. And with Allah is success."

9.100 [Machine] Funeral Procession
[Machine] The Prophet ﷺ said: "When you see a funeral procession, stand up until it passes, or until you are laid down."
[Machine] Narrated from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ , he said: "When you see a funeral procession, stand up for it until it passes or is placed, even if there is no walking person with it."
[Machine] The Prophet ﷺ said, "When you see a funeral, stand up. And whoever follows it, do not sit down until it is laid down."
That his father said, "While we were accompanying a funeral procession, Abu Huraira got hold of the hand of Marwan and they sat down before the coffin was put down. Then Abu Saʿid came and took hold of Marwan's hand and said, "Get up. By Allah, no doubt this (i.e. Abu Huraira) knows that the Prophet forbade us to do that." Abu Huraira said, "He (Abu Saʿid) has spoken the truth." (Using translation from Bukhārī 1309)
[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "When you follow a funeral procession, do not sit down until the deceased is placed." Abu Bakr ibn al-Hasan informed us that Hajib ibn Ahmad narrated to us from Abdur-Rahim ibn Munib, who narrated from Jarir, who narrated from Suhail ibn Abi Salih, who narrated from his father, who narrated from Abu Sa'id that he said, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "When you follow a funeral procession, do not sit down until the deceased is placed." Suhail said, "I saw Abu Salih not sitting down until the men's shoulders were lowered."
[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "If any one of you follows a funeral procession, he should not sit until the deceased has been placed in the ground."
[Machine] The Messenger of Allah passed by a funeral, so he stood up for it. We said, "O Messenger of Allah, it is the funeral of a Jew." He said, "Death is enough to frighten (everyone). So when you see a funeral, stand up for it." Abu Amr Al-Adibi informed us, on the authority of Abu Bakr Al-Isma'ili, who informed me that Hameed ibn Muhammad ibn Shuayb narrated to us, on the authority of Suraaj, on the authority of Isma'il ibn Ibrahim, on the authority of Hisham Al-Dastawai, who mentioned it with his chain of narration, except that he said, (the Messenger of Allah) stood up for her and we stood up with him, and he said, "She is a Jewess," and he said, "Stand up," and he did not say that to her.
[Machine] He heard Jabir ibn Abdullah say that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ stood up for a funeral procession that passed by him until it disappeared.
[Machine] He heard Jabir ibn Abdullah say, "The Prophet ﷺ stood up for the funeral of a Jew and his companions until it disappeared."
[Machine] I heard Abdullah bin Abi Layla say that Sahl bin Hunaif and Qais bin Saad were sitting in Qadisiyyah when a funeral procession passed by them. They stood up, and it was said to them, "Is he from the people of the land or from the people of the treaty?" They replied, "Indeed, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ stood up when a funeral procession passed by him." It was said to him, "It is the funeral of a Jew." He said, "Is it not a soul?"
[Machine] He said: A man asked the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, "O Messenger of Allah, a funeral procession of a disbeliever passes by us, should we stand up for it?" He said, "Yes, stand up for it, for you are not standing up for it, rather you are standing up out of respect for the One who seizes the souls." And it was narrated to us from Anas ibn Malik that the Prophet ﷺ said, "I stand for the angels." And it was narrated from Abu Musa al-Ash'ari that the Prophet ﷺ said, "But we stand for those who are with it from the angels."
