9. Funerals (6/14)
I asked the Messenger of Allah ﷺ about kalalah and he said: “The verse that was revealed in summer is sufficient for you.ʿ He said: Had I asked the Messenger of Allah ﷺ about it, that would have been dearer to me than having red camels. (Using translation from Aḥmad 262)
[Machine] "He said that the shroud is made from the capital."
9.77 [Machine] The miscarriage is washed, wrapped, and prayed upon if it becomes apparent it had a life. Its meaning in prayer was narrated by Ibn Abbas and Ibn Umar.
[Machine] He (the narrator) lifted it (the hadith) to the Prophet ﷺ, who said: "The rider goes behind the funeral procession, and the walker goes behind it and in front of it, as well as to its right and left, near it. The stillborn baby is prayed upon, and a supplication is made for forgiveness and mercy for its parents." 6780 Abu Abdullah Al-Hafiz reported to us, Ali ibn Hamshad Al-Adl narrated to us, Ibrahim ibn Abi Talib narrated to us, Muhammad ibn Bashshar narrated to us, Abu Hammam Muhammad ibn Az-Zibrqan narrated to us, Yunus ibn Ubayd mentioned it in its meaning except that he said: "with safety and mercy" and did not mention about the person walking behind and in front of it. Ibrahim ibn Abi Talib said: "The statement of Yunus ibn Ubayd Allah and some of his family members informed me that he lifted it to the Prophet ﷺ as a narration from Yunus ibn Ubayd, from Sa'id ibn Ubayd Allah ibn Jubayr ibn Hayyah."
[Machine] I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ saying, "The rider behind the funeral procession, the one walking close to it, and the child who is praying for it."
[Machine] When the young boy is proceeded, he inherits and praise is given to him.
[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "When a child is born, he inherits and his name is to be Ismail bin Muslim Al-Makki. None other than him is more trustworthy, and it has been narrated from other sources as well, in a raised manner, from Abu Zubair."
[Machine] The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said, "When a newborn is presented, pray upon him and inherit from him what is inherited from you."
[Machine] The Prophet ﷺ said: "When a child is born, he inherits and is inherited from, and he is prayed upon." Suleiman said: "This hadith was only narrated to me by Ishaq from Sufyan." The sheikh said: "And it was narrated by Al-Mughirah ibn Salih from Abu Az-Zubair, raised in the book of Al-Faraidh from the hadith of Abu Hurayrah, raised."
[Machine] Pray for your children, for they are more deserving of your prayers than those you have prayed for. And this has been narrated from another reliable source.
[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "The most deserving of what you offer salah for are your children."
[Machine] When Ibrahim, the son of the Prophet ﷺ, passed away, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ prayed for him while in the burial place.
[Machine] That the Prophet ﷺ prayed for his son Ibrahim, who was seventy nights old.
[Machine] That the Messenger of Allah, ﷺ , offered the funeral prayer for his son Ibrahim when he died. These are the reports, even if they are conflicting. Some of them are connected to others and they have established the fact that the Messenger of Allah, ﷺ , offered the funeral prayer for his son Ibrahim. This is more reliable than the narration of those who claim that he did not offer the funeral prayer for him.
[Machine] He did not pray for the miscarriage until it was developed.
[Machine] "O Allah, protect him from the punishment of the grave."
[Machine] "He used to pray upon the souls who never committed a sin and would say, 'O Allah, make him a forerunner, a predecessor, and a treasure for us.' Na'im (a narrator) said, 'It was said to one of them, 'Do you pray upon the souls who never committed a sin?' He said, 'The Messenger of Allah ﷺ prayed upon him, and he was forgiven, and he is in the position of one who did not disobey Allah (ﷻ).' "
9.78 [Machine] The congregation of the doors of the martyr, and those who pray upon him and wash him.
9.79 [Machine] Muslims are killed by the polytheists in battle, so the deceased are not washed, prayed upon, and are buried with their bodily fluids and blood.
[Machine] Abu al-Walid narrated from Abu Amr al-Adib who narrated from Abu Bakr al-Isma'ili who narrated from Abu Khalifa who narrated from Abu al-Walid. Al-Laith narrated from Ibn Shihab who narrated from Abdul Rahman ibn Ka'b ibn Malik that Jabir informed him that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to gather the two men who were killed in the Battle of Uhud in a single shroud. Then he would ask them which one of them had memorized more of the Quran. When one of them was pointed out, the Prophet ﷺ would place him before the dead bodies and say, "I bear witness against these people on the Day of Judgment." He ordered for their burial to be done with their blood, without performing the funeral prayer or washing their bodies. This is the wording of the hadith as narrated by Abu Khalifa.
The martyrs of Uhud were not washed, and they were buried with their blood. No prayer was offered over them. (Using translation from Abū Dāʾūd 3135)
[Machine] On a day of the Battle of Uhud, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ passed by Hamzah ibn Abd al-Muttalib, who had been killed and mutilated. The Prophet ﷺ said, "If it were not for Safiyyah finding him, I would have left him until Allah resurrects him from the bellies of birds and wild animals." He then shrouded him in a mantle, and when his head was wrapped, his feet would show, and when his feet were wrapped, his head would show. He wrapped his head, and he did not offer the funeral prayer for anyone besides him. Then he said, "I bear witness that I will testify against you on the Day of Judgment." He used to gather three or two people in one grave and ask them who had memorized more of the Qur'an, and he would place the one who had memorized it more inside first. He shrouded the two men and the three men in one garment." Abu Abdur Rahman As-Sulami informed us, Ali ibn Omar Al-Hafiz reported, "This is the wording of the hadith, 'and he did not offer the funeral prayer for anyone besides him' which is not preserved." Abu Isa At-Tirmidhi said in his book Al-Ilal, "I asked Muhammad bin Bukhari about this hadith, meaning its chain of narrators, and he said, 'The hadith of Abdul Rahman bin Ka'b bin Malik from Jabir bin Abdullah is a Hasan hadith, and the hadith of Usamah bin Zaid is not preserved. There was a mistake in attributing the hadith to Usamah bin Zaid." The sheikh said, "It has also been said that Az-Zuhri narrated from Abdul Rahman bin Ka'b bin Malik from his father."
[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said on the day of Uhud: "Whoever saw the killing of Hamza?" A man replied: "I am alone and I saw his killing." The Messenger said: "Then go and show us." So, the man went and stood near Hamza. When he saw him, he saw that his stomach had been cut open and mutilated. The man said: "O Messenger of Allah, his body has been mutilated." So, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ disliked looking at him, then he stood between the bodies of the martyrs and said: "I bear witness that those who wrapped their companions in their blood, they will be witnesses against them. For no wounded person is wounded except that on the Day of Resurrection, his wound will bleed the color of blood, and its fragrance will smell like musk." Then the Messenger said: "Bring to me those among you who know the Quran the most, and let them recite it over the deceased." And he said: "In this grave and in this grave there are extra things that are not mentioned in the narration of Lailth." And in the narration of Lailth, there is an addition that is not mentioned in this narration. It is possible that his narration is from Jaber's narration from his father, and it is authentic. Even if the two narrations differ, Lailth bin Saad has a great reputation and his narration is more reliable. Allah knows best. And it is said that Az-Zuhri narrated from Ibn Abi Sua'ir from the Prophet ﷺ as a mursal (unsupported) and summarized (brief).
[Machine] "That the Prophet ﷺ witnessed the killing of the martyrs of Uhud, and he said: ‘I bear witness against them, so keep them company with their blood and flesh.’ Sufyan ibn 'Uyaynah said: 'Ma'mar confirmed this hadeeth to me, and it was narrated from him by Jabir as well.'"
[Machine] When it was the day of Uhud, the Prophet ﷺ honored the martyrs who were killed that day and said, "Join them in their blood, for I bear witness against them." The man, the two men, and the three were buried in one grave, and he would ask which of them had memorized the Quran, and they would bring him forward. Jabir said, "That day, my father and my uncle were buried in one grave."
[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "By the One in whose hand is my soul, no one speaks in the cause of Allah except that on the Day of Resurrection, his wounds will gush forth blood the color of blood, and his scent will be the scent of musk."
9.80 [Machine] Who claimed that the Prophet ﷺ was burying the martyrs of Uhud?
[Machine] I heard Abu Malik Al-Ghifari say: "The martyrs of Uhud were brought, they were nine in number, and the tenth among them was Hamza. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ prayed over them, then they were carried away. Then another group of nine was brought, and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ prayed over them, and Hamza remained in his place until the Messenger of Allah ﷺ prayed over them."
[Machine] He ﷺ said: "The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said regarding the martyrs of Uhud, they are ten, ten, ten, and among them is Hamza, until seventy prayers are offered for him. This is the most authentic narration in this topic and it is a mutawatir (consecutive) hadith."
[Machine] When Hamza was killed on the Day of Uhud, Safiyyah came forward seeking him, not knowing what had happened. She met Ali and Zubair, and Ali said to Zubair, "Tell your mother." Zubair replied, "No, you tell your aunt." Ali then said, "What did Hamza do? So that they thought they didn't know." The Prophet ﷺ came and said, "I fear for her sanity." He placed his hand on her chest and prayed for her. She regained her senses and began to cry. Then the Prophet ﷺ came and stood by her and said, "If it wasn't for the lamentation of the women, I would have left him until he was devoured from the bellies of wild animals and the beaks of birds." Then he ordered the martyrs to be brought forth and prayed over them. Nine bodies were laid out and Hamza was left separately. He made seven takbirs over them and they were lifted, leaving Hamza. Then nine more bodies were brought and he made seven takbirs over them until he finished with them. I only remember this from the hadith of Abu Bakr ibn Ayyash from Yazid ibn Abi Ziyad, and they were not reliable narrators.

[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ prayed for Hamzah and recited seven takbeerat over him, and he did not pray for any slain person except alongside him until he prayed for him seventy-two prayers. This narration is weak, and Muhammad ibn Ishaq ibn Yasir, if he does not mention the name of the one who narrated from him, he is not pleased with it. Al-Hasan ibn 'Umarah narrated it from Al-Hakam, who narrated it from Muqsim, who narrated it from Ibn Abbas, that the Prophet ﷺ prayed for the martyrs of Uhud. And Al-Hasan ibn 'Umarah is weak, his narration cannot be relied upon.

One day the Prophet ﷺ went out and offered the funeral prayers of the martyrs of Uhud and then went up the pulpit and said, "I will pave the way for you as your predecessor and will be a witness on you. By Allah! I see my Fount (Kauthar) just now and I have been given the keys of all the treasures of the earth (or the keys of the earth). By Allah! I am not afraid that you will worship others along with Allah after my death, but I am afraid that you will fight with one another for the worldly things." (Using translation from Bukhārī 1344)

[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ prayed for the martyrs of Uhud, eight years after their death, like bidding farewell to the living and the dead. Then he ascended the pulpit and said, "I am among you like one who is about to depart, and I bear witness that I will meet you at the Pond (in Paradise). Indeed, I observe it from my current place, and I am not afraid that you will commit shirk (associating partners with Allah), but I am afraid that you will compete for worldly desires." He continued, "This was the last gaze I cast upon the Messenger of Allah ﷺ ."

[Machine] The Prophet ﷺ said: "Your companion is being washed by the angels, meaning Hanzala. So ask his family about his condition." His wife was asked and she said: "He went out while he was in a state of major impurity when he heard the war cry." The Prophet ﷺ said: "That is why the angels washed him." Yunus said: "Thus, Zakariya bin Abi Zaidah narrated to me from 'Amir, who said: "Hamza was killed on the Day of Uhud, and Hanzala bin Al-Rabi' was killed on the Day of Uhud, and it was he whom the angels cleaned. [Machine] A Bedouin man came to the Prophet ﷺ, believed in him, and followed him. He said, "I want to migrate with you." So the Prophet ﷺ advised some of his companions regarding him. When the battle of Khaybar took place, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ gained some spoils and he distributed them among his companions according to a specific division. He used to watch their backs, so when he returned, they gave their shares to him. He said, "What is this?" They said, "It is a share that was allocated for you." So he took it and brought it to the Prophet ﷺ, asking, "What is this, O Muhammad?" The Prophet ﷺ replied, "It is a share that I allocated for you." He said, "I did not follow you for this purpose, but I followed you with the intention of fighting here and dying, so that I may enter Paradise." Then he pointed to his neck with an arrow, hinting that he wanted to be martyred. The Prophet ﷺ said, "If you are truthful to Allah, Allah will be truthful to you." Then they rose and went to fight the enemy. The Prophet ﷺ was being carried and he was hit by an arrow where he had pointed. The Prophet ﷺ asked, "Is he the one?" They said, "Yes." He said, "Allah has spoken the truth and he has spoken the truth." The Prophet ﷺ wrapped him in his garment, laid him down, and prayed for him. It was noticed in the prayer of the Prophet ﷺ that he said, "O Allah, this is your servant who went out as a migrant for Your sake and was killed as a martyr. I am a witness to him." Ata said, "It is claimed that this man remained alive until the end of the war and then died, and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ prayed for him, while those who were not prayed for died before the end of the war. And Allah knows best."

[Machine] He heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say during his campaign to Khaybar, to 'Amir ibn al-Akwa' whose real name was Sinan: "Descend, O son of al-Akwa', and bring us some of your provisions." So he descended and began to recite the verses of the poetic ode: "By Allah, if not for you, we would not have been guided, nor believed, nor prayed. So send down tranquility upon us and make our footsteps firm. Surely, we will meet the disbelievers who have transgressed against us, and if they seek to harm us, we will retaliate." The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to him: "May your Lord have mercy on you." 'Umar ibn al-Khattab said: "By Allah, it is obligatory. If we are granted victory through him, he will be killed during the Battle of Khaybar as a martyr." And it was reported to me that his own sword turned against him, so he spoke harshly to it while fighting, and it caused his death. The Muslims doubted him and said: "Only his own weapon killed him." So Salamah ibn 'Amr asked the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and informed him of what the people were saying about him. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "Indeed, he is a martyr." So the Messenger of Allah ﷺ prayed for him, and the Muslims prayed for him.

It has been narrated in the authentic Hadith from Husain from 'Amr ibn Maymun in the story of the killing of 'Umar. When he stabbed him, the dagger flew with the knife with two edges that would not pass by anyone on the right or left except that it stabbed him. And in that, there is evidence that he was killed with a predetermined plan, then he was washed, shrouded, and prayed upon.
