9. Funerals (5/14)
[Machine] I heard Ibn Abbas say that a red blanket was placed in the grave of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ 6721. And Abu Abdullah Al-Hafiz informed us that Abu Bakr ibn Ishaq narrated to us, Ismail ibn Qutaybah narrated to us, Yahya ibn Yahya informed us that Wakee' narrated to us about Shu'bah with the same meaning.
[Machine] And when the Messenger of Allah ﷺ was placed in his grave, Shuqran took a piece of cloth that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to wear and spread on his bed, and he buried it with him in the grave. He said, "By Allah, no one will wear it after you." So it was buried with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. In this narration, if it is proven, it indicates that they did not spread it in the grave, in accordance with the Sunnah in that matter. And it has been narrated from Yazid ibn Al-Asam, from Ibn Abbas, that he disliked placing a garment under the deceased in the grave.
9.61 [Machine] What Came in Facing the Qibla When Dealing with the Dead
[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said in his Farewell Pilgrimage: Verily, the allies of Allah are those who establish the five obligatory prayers that are prescribed for them, and fast in the month of Ramadan with the intention of seeking reward, and give their wealth in charity while intending to fulfill their duty. They avoid major sins that Allah has forbidden. Then, a man asked him, and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: They are nine: Associating partners with Allah, killing a believer unlawfully, fleeing from the battlefield, usurping the property of orphans, consuming interest (usury), accusing chaste women of adultery, being disobedient to parents who are Muslim, and entering the sacred house of Allah (Kaaba) before it is lawful for you. Then he said: A person will not die until he commits these major sins and establishes the prayer and pays the Zakat, except that he will be among the Prophet ﷺ in a house whose doors are made of gold. This was either from my book or from the book of my Shaykh, may magic befall it.
[Machine] The Messenger of Allah, ﷺ , said, "The major sins are associating partners with Allah, slandering chaste women. I said: "Shall I kill in case of killing?" He replied: "Yes, and despite it." He also mentioned "killing a believer intentionally, and defrauding war booty, and causing harm to orphan's property, and disobedience to parents who are Muslims, and committing acts of disobedience in the sacred Ka'bah, whether a person is alive or dead". It was narrated from Al-Hasan that 'Umar bin Khattab mentioned the Ka'bah and said, "By Allah, it is nothing but stones raised up by Allah as a Qiblah for us, and by it He directs our glorification for Him (in Salah) and causes our deaths to be as a direction towards it.”
9.62 [Machine] Al-Idhkhir Lil-Quburi Wa Saddil-Furaj
[Machine] Abu Abdullah Al-Hafiz and Abu Abdullah Al-Susi informed us, they said: Abu Abbas Muhammad ibn Ya'qub informed me that Abbas ibn Walid ibn Mazid told me, he said: My father informed me, he said: Al-Awza'i told me, he said: Yahya ibn Abi Kathir narrated to me, he said: Abu Salama ibn Abdur Rahman narrated to me, he said: Abu Huraira mentioned the hadith about the sanctity of Mecca and the saying of the Prophet ﷺ, "Its trees are not to be cut, and its thorns are not to be uprooted." Abbas ibn Abdul Muttalib then said, "O Messenger of Allah, except for the ifkhir (a type of thorny bush); for we use it in our houses and graves." The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Except for the ifkhir, except for the ifkhir." They mentioned it in Sahihain from the hadith of Al-Awza'i, and Al-Bukhari also narrated it from the hadith of Ibn Abbas and Safiyyah bint Shayba with its meaning.

9.63 [Machine] Filling the grave with soil using shovels and hands
[Machine] By Allah, we didn't know about burying the Messenger of Allah, ﷺ , until we heard the sound of the gravedigger on Wednesday night.
[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ fell ill with the illness that he passed away in. Fatima supported him against her chest and he was overwhelmed by grief. She said, "Oh, my dear father, how great is your grief." He replied, "Your father will no longer experience grief after today." When he passed away and was buried, Fatima said to me, "O Anas, it pleases you that you do not walk upon the grave of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ." Hammad said, "Indeed, it was preserved that you do not walk upon the grave of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ."
[Machine] That the Messenger of Allah ﷺ spat three times in a grave. Abu Bakr Muhammad ibn Muhammad informed us that Abu al-Husayn Al-Fasawi narrated to him, and Abu Ali Al-Luluy narrated to him, and Abu Dawud mentioned it.
[Machine] I saw the Prophet ﷺ when he buried Uthman ibn Mazh'un. He prayed and prayed four takbeers and then made three handfuls of soil from the earth while standing on the grave. The chain of narration is weak, except that there is a witness from Ja'far ibn Muhammad narrating from his father, who narrates from the Prophet ﷺ in a mursal (incomplete chain) narration. It is also narrated from Abu Huraira, elevated. And Allah knows best.
[Machine] A man died and did not have any good deeds, except for three small mounds (of dirt) that were placed on his grave. Because of this, his sins were forgiven. And this is a reliable narration in this matter.
[Machine] He saw Ali in the grave of Ibn Mukaffaf wearing two or three garments.
[Machine] And by Allah, Ibn Abbas was buried with much knowledge.
9.64 [Machine] The headline translates to: "No increase in the grave more than its soil, so as not to rise significantly.
The Messenger of Allah ﷺ prohibited building on a grave or adding to it or leveling or plastering it.
This was narrated by Abān b. Abū Ayyāsh from al-Ḥasan and by Abū Naḍrah from Jabir from the Prophet ﷺ who said, "And do not add earth on top of his grave."
[Machine] The Prophet ﷺ was cursed and milk was poured over him as a form of insult. It was mentioned in the hadith that he said, "His grave was raised from the ground to a height of a hand span as I witnessed it."
[Machine] That the Prophet ﷺ was sprinkled with water on his grave, and pebbles from the pebbles of Al-Arshah were placed on it, and his grave was raised to the length of a handspan. This is a hadith reported by Al-Waqidi with a chain of narrators from Jabir. And this is refuted.
[Machine] Lighten the soil from him, for the Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to instruct us to level the graves.
9.65 [Machine] Sprinkling water on the grave and placing pebbles on it
[Machine] That pouring water on the grave was during the time of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ .
[Machine] That the Prophet ﷺ sprinkled water on the grave of his son Ibrahim and placed pebbles on it. Al-Shafi'i said, "Pebbles only stick on a flat grave."
[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ sprinkled (water) on the grave of Ibrahim, and it was the first grave on which he sprinkled. He said when he buried him and finished, "Peace be upon you, and I do not know except that he said and he drew his hand over it." Abu Bakr informed us, Al-Fasawi reported, Al-Lulwi reported, Abu Dawud mentioned it.
[Machine] "That the Messenger of Allah ﷺ sprinkled water on the grave of his son. He said, 'And I don't know anything about it except for what he said, and he smoothed it with his hand.'"
[Machine] Water was sprinkled on the grave of the Prophet ﷺ . It is reported that Bilal bin Rabah sprinkled the water on his grave as a gesture of closeness. He started from the front of his head on the right side, and continued until he reached his feet. Then he struck the water against the wall, but it did not splash back from the wall. Abu Abdullah Al-Hafiz informed us about this, and he was informed by Abu Abdullah Al-Asbahani, meaning Ibn Batta. Al-Hasan bin Al-Jahm narrated to us, who was narrated by Al-Husayn bin Al-Faraj, who was narrated by Al-Waqidi, who was narrated by Abdullah bin Jafar, who mentioned it.

When Uthman ibn Maz'un died, he was brought out on his bier and buried. The Prophet ﷺ ordered a man to bring him a stone, but he was unable to carry it. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ got up and going over to it rolled up his sleeves. The narrator Kathir told that al-Muttalib remarked: The one who told me about the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: I still seem to see the whiteness of the forearms of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ when he rolled up his sleeves. He then carried it and placed it at his head saying: I am marking my brother's grave with it, and I shall bury beside him those of my family who die. (Using translation from Abū Dāʾūd 3206)

He who attends the funeral till the prayer is offered for (the dead), for him is the reward of one qirat, and he who attends (and stays) till he is buried, for him is the reward of two qirats. It was said: What are the qirats? He said: They are equivalent to two huge mountains. Two other narrators added: Ibn 'Umar used to pray and then depart (without waiting for the burial of the dead). When the tradition of Abu Huraira reached him, he said:" We have lost many qirats." (Using translation from Muslim 945a)
[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "Whoever prays upon a funeral (prayer), he will have one carat, and whoever waits until the burial is completed, he will have two carats." They said: "So what are the two carats?" He said: "They are like the two great mountains."
[Machine] The Messenger of Allah, ﷺ , heard saying: "Whoever accompanies a funeral from its house and prays over it and follows it until it is buried, will have two Qirats of reward. And whoever prays over it and then returns, will have a Qirat of reward equal to Mount Uhud." Ibn 'Umar sent Khubbab to ask Aisha about the statement of Abu Hurayrah, and then Khubbab returned to Ibn 'Umar and informed him of what Aisha had said. So Ibn 'Umar took a handful of pebbles from the mosque and tossed them in his hand until the Messenger returned to him. He then said, 'Aisha spoke the truth.' Ibn 'Umar then struck the ground with the pebbles in his hand and said, 'Indeed, we have neglected many Qirats.'"
[Machine] Narrated by the Prophet ﷺ: "Whoever prays the funeral prayer for a deceased person will receive one Qirat (a unit of reward) and whoever follows the funeral procession until the deceased is placed in the grave will receive two Qirats." I asked Abu Huraira, "What is a Qirat?" He said, "It is equivalent to the size of a mountain called Uhud."
[Machine] The Prophet ﷺ said: Whoever prays upon a funeral will get one Qirat and whoever witnesses its burial will get two Qirats. The Qirat is the size of the mountain of Uhud.

[Machine] The Ansar came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ on the day of Uhud and said, "O Messenger of Allah, we have suffered wounds and fatigue. What do you command us to do?" He said, "Dig and widen and put two or three men in one grave." They asked, "Which of them should be placed first in the grave?" He said, "The one who has more knowledge of the Quran." Abu Bakr was placed in front of two or one grave."

[Machine] The Prophet ﷺ said regarding the martyrs of Uhud: "Bury the two and three together in one grave, dig deep, and ensure a good burial."
[Machine] The wounds intensified on the day of Uhud, so it was reported to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ . He said, "Dig, widen, beautify, and bury in the graves two or three at a time." And so it was.
[Machine] We went out with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ for a funeral, and I was a young boy with my father. He sat on the edge of the grave and would nod to the digger, saying "Make it wider from the side of the head, make it wider from the side of the legs." And in another narration of Abu Abdullah, he said, "I saw him sitting on the edge of the grave, saying 'Make it wider from the side of his head, for there are many green pastures for him in Paradise.'"

9.69 [Machine] Leveling and flattening of graves
[Machine] I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ commanding it to be leveled, the wording of the Hadith of Al-Rudhbari and in another narration of Abu Salih, Thumama ibn Shufay narrated that he said: We were with Fadalah ibn 'Ubayd in the land of Rome, and the rest is equal.
[Machine] Ali ibn Abi Talib said to me, "I send you on what the Messenger of Allah ﷺ sent me, that you do not leave a raised grave without leveling it, and do not leave a statue in a house without erasing it."
[Machine] I saw the Prophet ﷺ and his two companions with three graves that had no marker and were leveled with the ground in the red sand of Al-'Arsah. I saw that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ was ahead and Abu Bakr's head was between the shoulders of the Prophet ﷺ , and Umar's head was at the feet of the Prophet ﷺ . The head of Uthman ibn Hanif, said by more than one person, was at the feet of the Prophet ﷺ , according to Ibn Abi Fudayk.

[Machine] I entered the house where the grave of the Prophet ﷺ is located, along with Mus'ab ibn al-Zubayr, and I saw their graves lined up.

9.71 [Machine] Not built upon tombs or carved.
[Machine] I heard the Prophet ﷺ prohibit a man from sitting on a grave, shaving it, or building on it.
9.72 [Machine] In the washing of the woman
The Messenger of Allah ﷺ came in when his daughter died, and he said: Wash her with water and lotus leaves three or five times or more than that if you think fit, and put camphor, or some camphor in the last washing, then inform me when you finish. When we had finished we informed him, and he threw us his lower garment saying: Put it next to her body. Malik's version has: that is, his lower garment (izar); and Musaddad did not say: He entered in. (Using translation from Abū Dāʾūd 3142)
[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "When a woman dies and they intend to wash her, they should start with her abdomen and gently wipe her abdomen, if she is not pregnant. If she is pregnant, do not move her, then when you want to wash her, start with her lower body and place a cloth over her private parts, then take a handful of a cleansing agent and wash her, doing it well. Then enter your hand from under the cloth and wipe her three times, doing it well before you perform the ablution. Then perform the ablution with water and sidr leaves, and let a woman pour the water over her while she is standing and not looking at anything else. The washing of her body should be done by the woman who is righteous, but if she is young or weak, then another Muslim woman who is righteous should wash her. When the washing of her lower body is complete, wash her with clean water mixed with sidr. This is an explanation of how to perform the washing. Then wash her three times with water and sidr, starting with her head before anything else, and purify every washing from the sidr with water. Do not comb her hair, but if something happens to her hair after the three washings, then make it five, and if something happens after the five, then make it seven. All of this should be done with water and sidr, so as not to leave any doubt. If this happens in the last washing, the third or any other, then take some camphor and some sidr, and put it in a new container, then sit her down and pour it over her, starting with her head until you reach her feet. When you are done, place a clean cloth over her, then enter your hand from behind the cloth and remove it from her. This is an explanation of washing her lower body. Then apply perfume to her, shroud her, and braid her hair in three braids, and do not make her resemble a man. Her shroud should consist of five garments, one of them being the wrap that covers her lower body, and do not remove anything from her hair, such as a Qomees or anything else. If anything falls from her hair, wash it and then return it to her hair or fix it to her hair. If she is bald, or has shaved hair, or something similar, then take a wide cloth and wash it with water, or in another narration, immerse it in water. In our narration, make sure to follow everything and do not move her, as I fear that something may be ruptured that cannot be fixed. This is the wording of Ibn Khuzaymah and the Hadith of al-Saghaani, and it ends with the statement: "And her shroud should consist of five garments."

[Machine] The daughter of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ passed away, so he asked us to wash her odd number of times, three or five or more if I saw it necessary, and to put camphor or something of camphor in her shroud. When we finished, he asked us to inform him. She said, "We informed him." He said, "Then bring her to me." She said, "So we brought her to him." He placed his hand on her forehead and said, "Rub her hair with it." She said, "So we tied her hair into three braids and placed her behind him."

[Machine] He told him, saying: "I heard Hafsah bint Sireen saying: 'Umm Atiyyah informed us that they put the head of the Prophet's daughter in three cloths, and they said: we washed it.'"

[Machine] The Prophet ﷺ came to us while we were washing his daughter. He said, "Wash her three times, or five times, or more than that, if you see it necessary, with water and sidr, and add camphor in the Hereafter. Then, inform me when you are finished." When we had finished, he threw his garment towards us and said, "Wrap her in this." He did not specify anything beyond that. He said, "I do not know which daughters of his he was referring to, but he claimed that the Prophet ﷺ had said that poetry was in her nature." Ibn Sirin also used to command women to let their hair down and not tie it.

I was one of those who washed Umm Kulthum, daughter of the Prophet ﷺ, when she died. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ first gave us lower garment, then shirt, then head-wear, then cloak (which covers the whole body), and then she was shrouded in another garment. She said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ was sitting at the door, and he had shroud with him. He gave us the garments one by one. (Using translation from Abū Dāʾūd 3157)

[Machine] In it, he rode the sea and died, and they could not find an island for him except after seven days, so they buried him there and he did not decompose. It was narrated to us by Al-Hasan al-Basri that he said, "He is washed, shrouded, prayed upon, and then thrown into the sea." In another narration, he was placed in a sack and then thrown into the sea.

[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "What delights me is that I have the equivalent of Mount Uhud in gold to spend in the cause of Allah, and I die while still having ten camels, except for their cost of a shroud or the repayment of a debt."
We visited Khabbaba who said, "We migrated with the Prophet ﷺ for Allah's Sake, so our reward became due and sure with Allah. Some of us passed away without taking anything of their rewards (in this world) and one of them was Musʿab bin ʿUmar who was martyred on the day (of the battle) of Uhud leaving a striped woolen cloak. When we covered his head with it, his feet became naked, and when covered his feet, his head became naked. So Messenger of Allah ﷺ ordered us to cover his head and put some Idhkhir (i.e. a special kind of grass) on his feet. (On the other hand) some of us have had their fruits ripened (in this world) and they are collecting them." (Using translation from Bukhārī 3897)
